Drs. Office - UTI Rant

Just wondering if you ladies would be mad about this too...

I went into my OB's office last week to get the Harmony test, and while I was there they did a urine sample. Well, they call me back yesterday (7 days after my pee test) to inform me that I have a bladder infection and need to be on antibiotics. I wonder how long they have been sitting on this information. I know it doesn't take 7 days for a urinalysis. I just feel like they should have told me sooner. I have a history of kidney infections, so I'm so thankful this didn't get worse in that long stretch of time!

Also, I don't understand how I can have a bladder infection and not feel any symptoms whatsoever.  I just thought all the peeing was pregnancy related. Hoping this bladder infection and the antibiotics don't hurt baby girl!

I would be a little curious about getting the results a whole week later as well. I will say though that I've been told over and over that bladder infections/UTIs/YIs etc. all feel different during pregnancy than they do when not pregnant and with all of the other symptoms you're probably feeling, it's not surprising that you didn't notice any symptoms. Like you said, frequent urination is common pregnancy symptom and I'm sure any twinges or cramping you may have felt was attributed to pregnancy as well. Don't beat yourself up over not noticing. Also, I wouldn't worry about the antibiotic hurting your LO. I'm sure your doc wouldn't prescribe something that wasn't safe. If it will make you feel better, ask them what categorty the anti is before you take it.

Geez, a weeks is pretty ridiculous. I went today and they said they'll have the results in 2 days. I'm glad they caught it though, I read that if it ends up becoming a kidney infection it can affect the baby so glad it'll get resolved soon! I also read that you don't always have symptoms which is why a lot of dr offices run the test often when you're pregnant.

My Dr. Called me today to let me know I had a YI. They took the culture on Friday and considering the weekend, a 3 day turn around seems normal. 7 days is rediculous. 

I was kind of surprised that my Dr and pharmacist disagreed on the safety of the medication, though. Dr's office was very clear it was safe, pharmacist told me not to insert it too far in just in case (sorry if that's TMI). 

See if your Dr office offers online access to your medical files. Mine actually connects to an app on my phone, so I had my test results at my fingertips before any phone calls.

With a history of infections myself, I would go back and ask for a culture.

Well...here's my take. A urinalysis might have been inconclusive, so they would have had to culture the sample, which can take a few days...and it may have sat in the lab over the weekend before the culture was started. That brings them to getting the results yesterday and calling you today. Not too far of a stretch, really.

7 days seems way too long. It took my doctors office less than an hour to tell me I had a UTI. When you're pregnant your symptoms can be vastly different (or gone altogether) when you have a UTI. Same thing when you get old. Lots of people get them and it gets into their blood stream before they even know they're sick.

Yeah when I went it yesterday they did the quick test in minutes while I waited (that was because I specifically went in bc I thought I had a UTI). But they also sent it out for the culture and still said they'd have results by tomorrow, so not sure why it would've taken a week. Sometimes I think the results sit there and they don't look at it right away or forget to call.
