Nursery Design

This thread is for sharing all your fun design ideas for your baby's space, whether it's a corner of the living room or master, his/her own nursery, or a shared room with siblings.  Find inspiration and motivation.  Share your furniture choices and/or transformations, color schemes, craft projects, and more.  I feel like I spent a lot of time and energy find the best gear for baby in terms of safety, practicality, price, necessity, etc., but sometimes it's more fun to focus on projects like this.  Share your nesting successes even if it's something like a before and after of your closet cleaning weekend, and let's celebrate it here.

  • Aw I love the hot air balloons! I've been hoping someone would start a thread like this. My nursery is still virtually empty; we have the walls painted and the cribs assembled and that is it. Very curious to hear what other people are doing.
  • @thepretzelchick you’ll have to update us when your mom finishes her project!  It sounds like you have a solid plan and are on the right track.

@allie456 you are ahead of me!  What color did you decide for your walls?

I frequently order from Art.com for work, but highly recommend it for ordering artwork online.  They have good sales and endless possibilities.  They also have a good search feature and have safe artwork shipping down to a science, nothing is ever broken.
  • We aren't even painting the nursery until May 2 (timing issues with freeing up other space). Baby is going to start sleeping in our room anyway, so there's no rush. Plus DD1 is still in the crib and I'm not sure I'll be ready to make that move yet. So her room may end up crib-less for a bit...

  • @bender29 I had to take the bedding out of the crib for now because the cats will get in and try to nap. They’ve lost interest now that the mattress is bare again.
  • @rox7777 how’s the quality on the curtains?  I have the same ones saved off on my favorites!  It looks like they are room darkening but not true blackout.  Do you think that matters in a nursery?

@rachelg777 in the end I got rid of our queen bed because it felt too cramped in there, but I did keep a twin XL bed which can work for guests on occasion and can be baby’s bed once she outgrows the crib. Did you make your mobiles?

@bender29 I hear ya on the cats.  They seem to love the room even more now that the stuff in it gets shuffled around on a regular basis.

You ladies have accomplished a lot and should be proud!  Your baby spaces look great!
  • @pirateduck I wish we could take ours out just for nesting's sake :D , but it makes more functional sense to keep it for now because my husband sleeps in it most nights. He stays up late working/doing his homework and also snores so we both sleep better. I made the one above the crib but bought the ceiling mobile!
  • @pirateduck They’re super thick and great quality. And they do darken the room significantly when my blinds are closed and the curtains are pulled shut. Here’s a picture of what it currently looks like with the the blinds closed and curtains fully shut. It’s still full daylight here. I’m actually ordering the dark blue for my boys rooms this week because they’re obsessed with them.

  • @rox7777 they do a better job than the room darkening ones I currently own!  I also have a type of blinds on the window as a second layer.  Perhaps I will order them. I only have about 30 sets of curtains bookmarked!
  • @pirateduck I had a few picked out and ultimately decided on these because they’re the right color and the star cut outs match the bedding set. I like the cut outs because it leaves just enough light that we can go without a nightlight. I think if I turned the blinds the other way it would be darker, I’ll have to play around with it and see how much darker it gets.

  • @rox7777 I’m obsessed with the color scheme in your nursery. My brain doesn’t do neutral well, but I always love them when I see them!
  • @bender29 Honestly it’s all my mom. She keeps sending me decor. My entire house is grey/white scheme because I tend to have commitment issues with colors. I do like the baby pink because it doesn’t overwhelm me at least. I think she knew that if she didn’t push me to do a nursery, I’d throw a crib in the room and call it a day again. I didn’t have a nursery with either boy. 😂
  • I love all of these rooms!

@pirateduck it's a cream color called Vanilla Ice Cream. I wanted something that could be neutral enough to transition to a non-nursery without repainting if we wound up selling the house or something.

These are the curtains we bought https://www.babybedding.com/painted-elephants-drape-panel

It comes with a whole set (crib sheets, crib skirts, etc) but the set was just too expensive to buy all the pieces. The curtains by themselves I thought we could splurge on though! I'm really excited for them to get here. I thought we might then do a green rug.
  • @lajoliedreamer Can you afford to rent a car for your mom? Would probably be cheaper than hiring someone to paint.

  • @catem07 If she can get here, she can use one of our cars because we carpool every day, but the issue is getting her here. There are no direct flights or trains from where she lives to us. I hadn’t thought about car rental, though, I’ll have to look into it!
  • We have made no progress on anything nursery related which I'm kind of frustrated about but also kind of understand it's unnecessary for us.  With DD1 we went all out with the nursery and she's 2.5 and has never slept up there on her own so clearly we probably won't need a nursery for awhile.  My ultimate goal was to re-do the guest bedroom as a big girl room for DD1 and just re-use the nursery for this baby since she realistically won't spend time in it other than playing and a place to store some clothes, diapers etc.  But we're getting pretty close to baby time and have made no progress on the big girl room.  I was hoping to have enough time to at least try transitioning DD1 to the new room but it would have to be finished first.  I think at this point it's most likely not going to happen because I don't want the transition too close to baby's birth so she thinks baby is kicking her out of our room.  I am, however, still hoping the rooms will get finished so I at least have a place to organize all the junk so I can find what I need because it's killing me right now everything is just thrown in boxes in both rooms.
  • I love all your nurseries. With DD I was so about getting everything set up and then never used her room at all, we were there for a year after DD was born. This time, I don't know if we will be switching jobs and moving yet so I have no ambition to do anything until I know we will be staying. On top of that the crib, is converted to a toddler bed that DD spends her first stretch of sleep in so I don't know if I'll turn it back into a crib or not seeing how DD didn't use it as a crib at all.

If we do stay where we are at DD and new baby will be sharing a room and I don't know how I will set that up at all, even though baby will likely be in our room until they are at least a year old anyhow. MH thinks that if we do move we will likely end up in a 1 bedroom with both kids in our room because that seems to be the only apartments that are coming up for rent currently and I really don't know how any of that will work. It will be pretty temporary though as we will only be there for 2 or 3 years max.
  • @lajoliedreamer painting is not bad, but the up and down on the ladder was exhausting while pregnant.  I could have done a 10'x10' room by myself in a day if it weren't for that, but I didn't have it in me to climb the ladder again.  The room definitely would have been done in a day if there were two of us working on it.  I think I probably have about 2 hours left of work to get the room finished at this point.
  • @jhysmath a one bedroom with two kiddos sounds tight.  Perhaps some sort of room divider or loft situation would help.  As long as baby has a safe spot to sleep, converting the bed back to a crib may not be necessary.  I hope you get your plans sorted soon so you aren't in limbo much longer!
  • @pirateduck for the first month baby will be in our family bassinet, then we'll be in NY for the summer and there's a crib in our room there. When we get back I have a pack and play that I keep by our bed with the infant bassinet that baby will spend most of the night in, for DD she was in bed with us most of the night by 5 months old. I'm assuming this time around we will likely start bedsharing earlier so I can get better sleep.
  • ugh this thread is giving me anxiety. I'm still using the nursery as my office. I can't move out until I get a bunch of people to help since I can't move my office furniture and neither can DH because of his bicep injury. in addition, I have to move DS1 into a twin bed, DS2 into the toddler bed, so that I can grab the crib and move it into the nursery. It's like a jigsaw puzzle!! 11 weeks seems so far away, but when I think about all the things I need to do, it's overwhelming!

  • @mamaqdubu I'm with you on the timeline seeming long and overwhelmingly short at the same time!
  • All the rooms look so good!! We ordered our decor from Etsy and it arrived yesterday. We will spend this Saturday putting up the wall decals, which look a little intimidating now that we have them. The crib we want is out of stock, supposedly should be back in stock next week, but I’m starting to think that might not happen due to the issues with this virus interrupting stuff from China and I’m pretty sure that’s where the crib is made. I already looked for alternatives but I didn’t see anything that I like remotely as much.
I’m a mean mom already and we did not paint our greige (grey beige) walls because I’m sure our little guy will want to paint his walls a million times before he’s 18 (I know I did, and my mom let me) and I’m just not going to paint them for a baby who’s going to grow into a kid who wants neon orange walls (not happening!)
  • @sunshinesea22 have you used google image search to see if your crib might be available from a different vendor?  It might not make a difference, but you never know.
  • @sunshinesea22 I was looking at decals on Etsy too -- which ones did you wind up with? Do they seem easy to put up?
  • @sunshinesea22 and @allie456 have you used decals before and do they come off okay when/if you want them too?
