Re: UO Thursday - 2/13

  • @stlbuckeye132 Agree re:Disney

UO - Valentine's Day is a dumb holiday. H almost assuredly does not have anything for me nor I him. He surprises me throughout the year with flowers and candy and things like that (also, the cats eat the flowers when he gets them for me so it's not always practical). He maaaaaay grab a card or a $5 bouquet from Trader Joes tomorrow for me but I'm not counting on it nor do I care. We're also going to a friends party tomorrow to "celebrate" (make pizza) which sounds about a thousand times more delightful than going to a restaurant this weekend (minus the fact that we may get dim sum brunch Saturday before going to see Little Women).
  • @pocketrose is that really a UO? I feel like the UO would be to say omg I LOVEEEEE Valentine's Day lol. Valentine's Day is stupid and the only reason I tolerate it is because of the emphasis on chocolate. Like people seem to put out chocolate in the office and other places. That is something I can support.
  • @pocketrose I don't need anything spectacular, but I do want DH tonat least acknowledge it- which he didn't do last year. I know this year he ordered some things off of amazon, but I'm assuming it's another season of Grey's.. so not really "Valentine's" but he tried.

My UO: I haaaate when people post all over Facebook that it's dumb and they wouldn't want their SO to get them flowers for Valentine's or other occasions because "they just die anyway.''  Seriously, no need to be a fun sponge- I looooove getting flowers and secretly think people who post things like that are just being defensive because their SO wasn't thoughtful enough to do it for them. Not saying everyone love receiving flowers, but to be so vocal about it on social media is dumb and rubs me the wrong way.
  • @pocketrose I was going to have my UO as that I love Valentine's day! Haha! Everyone seem to hate it. I just don't see what's to *hate* about breaking up the week/winter with a holiday. As a kid you get a party/treats/candy at school, as an adult there's usually treats or candy in the office.. or a reason to drink more wine than normal-I don't know! I don't discriminate holidays, love em all!
  • @modoodles agree that people who post stuff like that are likely trying to cover up another feeling. And I feel the same way about people who post pics of the flowers and stuff that their SO sent them with some sappy-ass message. But I guess then my UO is that I hate getting flowers  :D mostly because I'm terrible at caring for them so then they usually do die quickly and then they smell and then I don't know what to do with the vase and I just feel guilty lol. I remember people would send flowers to the house after DD was born and I would get so annoyed like "great, something else I have to worry about taking care of."
  • @modoodles I think you're right about the people who post that on fb because they're insecure/defensive about the lack of gift or something. MH and I don't really celebrate it with gifts or anything, but I know some people do really like that, so there's no need for me to rain on their parade!
  • Also, after all the brooms on my newsfeed this week I don't want to hear anything else about tide pods.

  • @modoodles I totally fell for it (didn't try it myself but was amazed at other people's broom videos) and was seriously disappointed when I found out you can do that any old day. :joy:
  • @mamaJellyBean HA I had to read that last sentence like 4 times because I thought the "great, something else I have to worry about taking care of" was about your daughter-not flowers. :D  I guess I skimmed over the first part about flowers.
  • I'm ambivalent to Valentine's day. With all of our grad school DH and I have been pretty broke for the past several years so we both kind of looked at each other and shrugged when we realized it was coming up.

I'd say my feelings towards Disney are slightly more positive than yours @stlbuckeye132 but I agree with all of the points you made! Plus I didn't have Disney channel growing up so the whole "ZOMG which is your favorite DCOM?!" convo that millennials have whenever we're grouped up has always been isolating for me.

My UO: I don't understand the obsession with Billie Eilish. People are so obsessed with both her music and her fashion and I don't get it! She wore this big oversized sweat suit to the Oscars and people were all about it and I was like 🧐
  • @mehugg I like Billie Eilish! But her Oscars outfit (and pretty much everything I've ever seen her wear) was SO ugly! And the long nails- hard pass. But I love watching her interviews. Her Vogue interviews every year are so great. And I'm seriously impressed by what she (and her brother) were able to accomplish by writing music in their bedroom at their ages!
  • @mehugg I really love a lot of her music. I don't watch fashion blogs and such, so I didn't know people are obsessed with her style. That said, I wonder if some of it doesn't have to do with the fact that they love her music and want to be encouraging of someone so young and with her history (why she wears the baggy clothes). Her style isn't my jam... but whatever floats her boat!

@mehugg at the risk of sounding old, wtf does DCOM stand for? my guess based on context is disney channel original movie...? Luckily I've never been asked that question I guess haha I grew up without cable so missed out on all that too.

@blaf322 yes! I've seen that before (didn't you just preface one of yours that way the other day?), and I'm always like, "oops, I didn't know I was supposed to be doing that... isn't this the RANDOMS thread for a reason?"
  • @stlbuckeye132 I'm impressed you got that far with DCOM. I have ZERO clue what it means and couldn't even come up with a guess lol

And, yes! I did! I remember to do that sometimes b/c I don't want y'all to think I'm some rogue crazy lady who can't be trusted :D
  • @blaf322 well I'll be the rogue crazy one because I can almost guarantee I'll never remember to use "NBR" haha
  • H and I set a $5 budget and are getting each other the most ridiculous things we can find/buy as a gift for $5 for Valentine’s Day. (We just spent a large amount on new furniture and this way we have no pressure to actually get each other something 🤷🏻‍♀️ Junk that’ll be thrown away is fine by me 😂

I once read something about Billie eilish saying she partly dresses that way so that kids that HAVE to dress that want, or want to, can feel better about themselves. (I do enjoy some of her music. But after I hear things a certain amount of
times I always end up liking it 😂)
still coming up with my UO. I need to think ahead.
  • @stlbuckeye132 YES! The DD, DH, DS make me cringe too. Still use them, but I feel you.
  • @stlbuckeye132 I have a hard time referring to DD as DD b/c we call her E.... in text, email, when speaking about her. Everyone calls her that when speaking about her.... But here, I have to use a longer abbreviation every time and it annoys me to no end lol.  Which is dumb... b/c it's not that big of a deal. But it does. I can't wait until we're on FB so I can stop doing that shit :D
  • We don't do Valentine's day, which I am SO thankful for.  I have no energy this time of year to worry about gifts.  DH is so hard to buy for and it is too much work.

I will use DH, DS etc. without even thinking about what they mean haha

I like talking about Non- Pregnant stuff for sure!  I find this board does a lot more pregnancy talk then non-pregnancy talk than my last one, but I just assumed we would get there eventually.

I have never listened to a Billie Eilish song in my whole life.  I know what she looks like because her hair is...different.

My UO:  I like school uniforms.  This totally comes from a place of a teacher in HS and the outrageous and totally inappropriate I see on kids sometimes. It also becomes a bullying issue sometimes (had to deal with one earlier this year) and I hate that. I wore uniforms from K - 7th grade and no uniforms 8 - 12.  I much preferred not having to stress about what clothes to wear.
  • @stlbuckeye132 nailed it! That's exactly what DCOM stands for.

And @blaf322 what's NBR? Not Baby Related? I'm totally cool with NBR topics. As a FTM with few parents in my social circles, I've learned SO MUCH from you all on the baby stuff but the NBR stuff is a lot of fun too
  • @stlbuckeye132 I can't get on board with the DH thing either; it really makes me cringe so I just spell it out. It's honestly easier for me to type out 'husband'.
  • @stlbuckeye132 I always type out husband or his name then delete to type DH so I don't look like a weirdo here. I'm totally 😬 cool & hip with all the abbreviations here. 😂😂

@modoodles I do the same :D Usually when talking about DD b/c I've never had to abbreviate that before. DH I'm used to with my last board.

    @mehugg yep! Not baby related

@JessDG DD's board basically always talks NBR, but I assumed that's just because we've been together for 4 years now. I feel like we didn't before moving to FB b/c I vividly remember it being a thing at first with people starting to preface things with NBR on FB comments within the group in the beginning and then we finally were like, uhhhh... not needed. So it stopped and now we get live updates when one of the girls goes out on a couple date with her H (b/c they're kind of swingers) :D That's way more interesting than the fact that Johnny pooped today haha
  • @blaf322 oooo kinda swingers?! I'm intrigued.
  • Oh I have another one- I don't find someone showing me an ultrasound picture to be uncomfortable or tmi at all. Even if it's the p/v shot.
  • @modoodles me either

@mrs_sheddy As far as we know, they aren't actively pursuing a relationship with another couple right now. I'm not sure if it's a permanent stop, like, they decided it wasn't for them when dating around a bit or just that they moved across the country and things are just different with their lifestyle now (I never think to ask when she and I are texting separately). So that's why I say kind of.
  • @stlbuckeye132 ooooh im one of those people that loves Disney!! haha. if i could go to disneyland once per month i totally would, lol. its just so magical and i feel so free there. like, the ambiance is different there than anywhere else and it totally is magical. but i grew up going to Disney World once per year cause my grandma lived in Florida, and im definitely in the Disney age group of coming home from school and watching the disney channel and loving DCOMs haha. im not like "wear tinkerbell underwear and carry daisy duck purses" disney crazy, but i love all the Disney parks, Disney +, Disney movies, etc.

and ya, valentines day is just meh to me. one of my love languages is gift giving - in that i express love by giving gifts - so i always buy stuff for DH just because thats what i like to do. but overall, its just another day (except for the chocolate....lets be real, the real holiday is Feb 15 when all the candy is on sale). IMO, you should express your love all the time, not just for a holiday. but love is also one of the most important things we learn in our lives, so celebrating it isnt bad either.

  • @mehugg im with you on not understanding the Billie Eilish obsession. we were in the car one time and one of her songs came on the radio and DH (who is 25) was like "you know, i think im finally old.....i dont get this kind of music that all the kids love these days, like Billie Eilish songs...."  :D hahahahahaha yep, 25, so old. but from what a lot of yall have said, it sounds like i might appreciate it more if i knew anything about her lol. i know nothing, and i dont hate her music, its just not my first choice to listen to.

  • I think Billie Ellish is wicked talented! She’s so young and has an amazing voice, her album was recorded in her brother’s bedroom. Plus, I think she’s sending a good message to show that you don’t need to dress a certain way to make your way in music
  • @NinnyJean I was about to say the same thing. DH really likes her music so I started listening and she is just so honest which is really refreshing. I don’t know about her personal style but I’ve heard her talk in interviews/articles basically about how she doesn’t like to flaunt her body. I think she is absolutely gorgeous and can’t believe how young, but so self-aware she is.

  • @NinnyJean yes! 🙌 exactly that!
  • Also, @knockupthestock you H is still a baby 😂
  • I’m one of the crazy Disney people 😬
we went once a year as kids (usually because cheerleading competitions or my parents had a professional conference in the area)
once I found out we were 4 hours away the last 2 years we got season passes and we stay at Shades of Green (military hotel on Disney and hella cheap if you go by lowest rank in our house) so we went a bunch for the last 2 years.
This year it was too expensive with 3 passes and the rate increases, but when it was added up we went 15 times in 2018 and 20 in 2019.
  • @JessDG I also loved wearing a uniform! I wore one from grade 7 to 12, it was the greatest.

@stlbuckeye132 I'm also not Disney crazy. But I  can't wait until my kids are old enough to take them, I'm also planning to wait until they're old enough to remember (so I should probably start saving now :D ). Also the DH and DD abbreviations make me uncomfortable, but I've succumbed to using them lol.

My husband always double checks and is like "we're still not doing anything for Valentine's day right? You're sure you don't want anything?" I think he thinks I'm trying to trick him lol. In the past we've just surprised each other with our favourite treats ( he gets me Ben& Jerry's, I get him pistachios). We also do a date night but like the week after Valentine's day so it's not as busy everywhere haha.
  • @footdrbritt omg I love shades of green! They have the best oatmeal I have ever eaten. Yes I know, a strange thing to love about them, but it’s been 12 years since the last time I was there and I still think about that oatmeal!
  • @Pascal86 I love Valentine’s too! It’s the one holiday that I don’t have to plan anything and DH does all the planning. He buys small gifts for the girls and chocolates for me. It’s so nice to not put thought in to a holiday
