Re: Product Spotlight: Baby Monitors

  • I got this one because it can show two  cameras on one display. Seeing as we'll have two under two, I didn't want to carry two monitors around. We haven't set it up yet so my review isn't very helpful. Second link is what we've been using. It's fine but. I thing special. Price was right and no issues with one kid to watch.

  • We have the infant optics one that has a billion reviews on amazon and I honestly don’t really like it. It constantly beeps out of range (although I think I finally figured out its when my phone is next to it). If I were doing it over I would probably look into something like the cocoon cam that doubles as a breathing monitor. We ended buying the angelcare pad that goes under the crib mattress because DS would only sleep in his crib on his belly and that gave me peace of mind at nighttime and worked until he started rolling all over.

Currently looking for something with a split screen because we will have the kids in different rooms.
  • Okay so in all honesty I read the title too fast at first and thought it said baby monsters lol.  Any opinions on the Moterola video monitors?  I dont really want to go wifi because our router doesnt reach all the way through our house.

  • We have a Nest cam that we use a video monitor and it's great. I picked up an audio-only monitor from the second hand baby stuff shop for $10 and it's got two receivers so we keep one in the living room and one in our bedroom and it's perfect. The audio monitor has some battery power so in the two power outs we've had, we still get some reception -- but it's buzzy and loud and awful, still better than nothing.

I'd strongly suggest checking out a second hand store for an audio monitor unless there's some special bells or whistles you desperately need.  They're the perfect sort of thing to wipe down with Lysol and give a second (or third or more) life before they hit the landfill. :) I'll either sell it back to the shop when we're done or put it on our Buy Nothing group to see if anyone wants it.

I do really like that the monitor has a set of lights to show the magnitude/volume of the noise that it's picking up.  I had big issues with hearing phantom cries with my first up until about 15 months, so staring at the monitor and seeing NO LIGHTS while hearing a crying baby helped me a lot with distinguishing actual baby-need from false-alarm-brain signals. Funny: I still sometimes think I hear a baby crying when I hop into the shower.

  • We're an audio only monitor household here. We spend no more than $18 on them, wherever. We insist on battery backup in the parent unit at least. We get about 2 years out of them before they die, and use monitors overnight for a long time due to our house size/shape-I want kids to be able to call for us overnight before resorting to full on screaming.

  • @kyrwy I still hear phantom cries in the shower. Ds is 13 months. I'm assuming I'll hear them for the rest of my life lol. We also have a noise only for when we are traveling or camping. I couldn't do that at home but it's great for when we're gone.

  • Was looking through Amazon baby deals and the monitor I got with two cameras and split screen is out there again.

  • I originally planned to do audio only but after discussing it with my husband (and fixing the door to the room that will be the nursery so it actually latches closed), we're thinking that a video monitor maybe a better choice. The door doesn't shut properly and are floors are creaky so even the cats walking around make sounds. We thought being able to see baby blueberry would be a better choice. But the cheaper ones (per the reviews) don't seem to last long and the more expensive ones have a lot of bells and whistles that we really don't need. Are there any recommendations for moderately priced, single camera, non wifi video monitor options?
  • @spartanca I've had no issues with this one and it's 50. Still going strong for over a year.
