Recommendations for Lower Back Pain Relief

Alright ladies, I need to know what works for you to relieve some of the lower back pain.  I do go for prenatal massages, but I need something for in between those sessions.  I find when I get up from sitting at my desk (or sitting anywhere for too long) I have an intense pain in my lower back/just above my butt.  It feels pretty localized and after I walk around for a few minutes it seems to get better.  Any suggestions for stretches or anything else to help?  I know it's a consequence of the pregnancy, but I'm just looking for alternatives to help relieve some of it.  TIA!

  • I am in the same boat. Crazy lower back pain and now I am getting this feeling like someone kicked me in the crotch. I don't know if things are just shifting around or what. My doc told me heating pads and ThermaCare patches are good, along with Tylenol when needed. I have a cervix check on Thursday so I am hoping I don't get any alarming news!!!

  • I've been having some annoying lower back pain too. It's above my tailbone and it hurts worse when getting up and walking around. I had it before pregnancy though and it went away with exercise but now it's back because I'm exercising less. UGH.

  • My OB told me if it gets bad enough to get one of the support belts at Motherhood or a similar store, but they told me that I need to wear it all day for it to have a real impact. I'm trying to hold off as long as I can before I get to that point.

I've been taking a bath in the evenings when I'm able and that has seemed to help the most so far. If I sit and soak for awhile I feel much better the next morning than nights when I'm not able to.

I'm sure exercise would help.  My trainer has been out of town with one of his clients (he's a body guard too), so I haven't worked out in a few weeks.  Should be getting back to it this week, so maybe that will help.
  • Go see a chiropractor.  You will be amazed with how much better you feel.

  • Waiting for it to warm up and my neighborhood pool to open. That was my life saver in 3rd tri last time.

  • If you aren't doing so now, find a pillow to stick between your knees at night. I was hobbling around last week, but that has really really helped and eased the pain all day. I had to try a couple different sized pillows though before finding the one that worked. A throw pillow from our couch was finally the right choice for me.
  • I had a lot of back pain with DS. It hasn't hit me yet this time, although my butt always feels like I've been doing squats all day instead of just sitting around on it. Last pregnancy, I brought a small pillow to put in the small of my back at work. At home, my most comfortable place was laying on the couch. I also used my Homemedics Shiatsu massage cushion daily and that really helped.

  • Kneel, spread knees apart. Lean forward with arms on ground supporting you. Have your caboose up as high as you can stretch it, you'll feel your lower back stretching. Hold position for a while. You'll feel instant relief. I was doing that several times a day and I haven't had lower back pain in a while now.

This, a million times this.  I couldn't walk last week, this week after 3 treatments and kinso-taping I have no pain.

  • Prenatal Yoga and Massage. Although if you haven't worked out lately, take it easy at yoga for the first time.  It has helped me a lot with lower back pain because I'm on my feet a lot at work.  Also the pillow between the knees has helped at night.
  • I got a support belt and a Leachco Snoogle. Both have helped my back pain a whole lot!

This is exactly how I feel. My poor undercarriage is constantly throbbing. I'm going to request a cervix check Friday at my appointment. I'd rather be safe than sorry.

Down dog stretch and heating pad have helped me a bit. My doc also recommended the maternity belt but I'm trying to hold off on that. I'd already been using a Leachco pillow for weeks when the pain started... :/

Heating pad at night helps me.  I also do some stretching.
  • My heating pad helps a lot. I come home from work and lay on it for at least an hour.

  • I stretch a lot, especially my legs, and that has helped my lower back pain...also lots of feet elevating!

  • It sounds like sciatic nerve pain. I am in the throws of it right now as well. Google "Sciatic pain exercises during pregnancy" or something similar and you will find a lot of good exercises and stretches (some already mentioned here). Among other things, it often stems from weak glute muscles, so ask your trainer to help with strengthening there. Good luck! I hope you (and everyone else experiencing this) feels better! It sucks!!
  • My doc recommended prenatal yoga. She also had a great suggestion bc the classes get expensive... On Demand has a couple different shows!
