Re: All trimester check-in week of January 13!

  • To all the c-section experts we have here :-)

I have a very very strong reaction to morphine - it makes me projectile vomit for days afterwards and I’m basically not functional (even with the anti sickness meds). I’ve requested for my planned c section that they don’t give me morphine (it’s standard practice here to give it to you before they finish closing you up and for the first 24 hours). The Dr was sure I would change my mind. Also she said if I’m in extreme pain I won’t be able to function either.
What do you reckon? Is it possible without IV opioids? And is it advisable?

  • @emmasemm I’m not sure what was given to me during surgery (I had epidural placed prior to c-section when I was attempting to deliver vaginally), but after, it’s totally manageable without morphine but I think it depends as we have different pain threshold. As soon as I was done with c-section and was receiving my first post-surgery pain meds, I told them no narcotics. I had Vicodin before and made me so nauseous that I couldn’t function. The first med they gave me was IV ibuprofen (didn’t know such a thing existed). That was great. No nausea. After that first dose I just received acetaminophen and ibuprofen (both prescription strength). Every 4 or 6 hours depending on drug (can’t remember which was which). All the nurses kept pushing narcotics and told me that I don’t have to be tough but I wasn’t. I really was fine without narcotics and no nausea was awesome.

  • echo what @emmasemm said about moving after any surgery. I had a right hemicolectomy 2 years ago (complication from a ruptured appendix), I was in the hospital for a month but they wanted me walking the hospital halls within a couple of days. They kept stressing walking and protein.
  • @emmasemm Can you do Toridol (sp?)? I had that after my first C section before I started with ibuprofen and it worked fine. My second c section was complicated as baby was transverse back down (after being head down and on my cervix just one day prior) so the dr had to perform a version while I was cut open and baby was pulled out breach. That required serious aftercare pain meds for me. But I think you should be able to manage without morphine for sure.
  • @emmasemm I don’t know why it would be a problem to forgo the morphine. Toradol was all I needed after a vaginal delivery (it’s a very strong NSAID - delivered via IV or injected into a muscle), they can only give you two doses though. Often people will react to one type of opiate and not another (it’s common to get super nauseous with Vicodin but not oxycodone). If the pain is getting unbearable you could try fentanyl, it doesn’t last as long - which would be good if it made you sick - but it might take the edge off. You could also try dilaudid (hydromophone). If you’re just not wanting to risk any opiates I would ask for a combo of anti inflammatories and nausea meds, often meds like zofran (ondansetron) will help lessen pain all on their own.
