Sitting in the waiting room after taking my glucose drink. I really don’t think the drink itself is that big of a deal (I had orange—only option given).

I feel a little lightheaded now so I hope that doesn’t mean I’m not tolerating the sugar well.

Sugar has been pretty much my only craving this pregnancy so losing it will make me pretty sad.

Eta: the administrative ppl at my office are such jerks. My friend just left this practice bc they are not only rude, but incompetent and she couldn’t take it anymore. (This guy is the best surgeon; I didn’t have a c-section, but I want him just in case. I have yet to see him this pregnancy—have seen the one other doctor and the NP). I told the admins I needed an appt in 3 wks and they gave me one in 5 wks. I just don’t care that much so I was like, sure whatever. I should probably make the next few appointments after that one bc this office is so busy, but I just don’t wanna deal with the admin meanies right now.

  • @stacey6689 That's great that your practice posts them to the portal. Mine legit only uses the portal for invoices haha. Like, thanks! How helpful! I'm glad you passed! My results will be released tomorrow, and I'm not too worried. If I failed, I failed. When it was the results testing for chromosomal issues, you better believe I called and harassed them the SECOND I saw the lab had sent the results haha!

  • @silverhope, I felt pretty terrible and lightheaded after the glucose drink and ended up having “low” blood sugar 🤷🏼‍♀️ Have similar feelings toward sugar this pregnancy (❤️), so hopefully you have a similar result!

so... I just got word that I  failed my glucose test.   :'(  apparently I failed badly enough that they didn't even send me to do the 3 hour test, they are just sending me straight to a diabetes educator.  this didn't happen in either of my other pregnancies so I'm really nervous about it all.. plus all I've been craving is sugar, and it's looking like I'll have to cut all that out.  ugh.   this was pretty unexpected... but then again.. I really shouldn't have eaten those rolos a few hours before the test.  doh.
  • @treetop19 oh man, did you tell them about the chocolate? I’d bring it up and see if you can redo it bc as much of a pain as it is it’s prob better than diabetes management!

  • @treetop19 Ugh I am so sorry! I know sometimes GD can be less of a big deal so FX that is the case here. It's crazy how different our bodies can be from pregnancy to pregnancy. Makes no sense to me!

  • @treetop19 Oh man that sucks. But if you only did the one hour screening wouldn’t it be worth doing the 3 hour test before being diagnosed with GD? Especially bc of the chocolate you ate. The way my midwife explained it, the one hour is only a screening (if you pass you pass but if you fail you need more testing) and the 2 and 3 hour are diagnostic.
  • @treetop19 Sorry to hear that you failed. I would definitely ask to do the 3 hour test.
  • Thanks guys.  I guess my levels were high enough to the point where they were certain I would fail the 3 hour test too, so that's why they went straight to a diagnosis... I didn't mention the chocolate but then again, I only had a couple pieces, so I have no idea if that would have thrown my results off enough to matter.   they pretty much fast-tracked me to an appointment with a diabetes educator on Tuesday.. (I barely had time to get a word in edgewise.. lol) . so I'm going to go to that appointment and see what they say. Diabetes does run in my family and I'm AMA this pregnancy, so I guess shouldn't be that shocked, but I just really wasn't expecting it.
  • @miss.sally that is fantastic news! So glad you found them before delivery!

@treetop19 I would definitely call back and say you had chocolate pre-test. My doctor had told me not to eat anything with sugar or carbs that morning for breakfast.

@pdx2020 oh interesting. I can’t remember if I felt the same last test bc it was such a blip on the radar. I ended up feeling pretty lightheaded by the time I got home. Whole rest of the day was just off. I eat a lot of sugar so I was surprised ha.

  • @silverhope My dr's office was booked the first week of Jan. when I made my appointment in early Dec.--I think the holidays make the week you wanted to get in there super busy. Can they at least get you on a list if someone cancels ahead of time in 3-4 weeks?
  • @miss.sally YES! I am so glad it was clear to you and you know you are making a good choice! Yay!

  • @mrsvp614 There’s nothing more annoying than waiting 45 mins for a 15 minute appointment! But glad everything is great. I also love the early morning appointments for that reason.
  • @treetop19 That is a major bummer, but hopefully your appointment with the diabetes specialist goes smoothly.  Maybe they're being extra cautious with you because diabetes runs in your family (and you're AMA)?  Either way, good luck! <3

@silverhope I got the orange sugar drink, too!  I liked it.......... lol!

@miss.sally I am so happy that you had a good meeting with the midwife group!  That's fantastic!

@mrsvp614 Oh man, I hate when the doctor is running late.  Waiting is the worst!  How was the TDAP shot?  Someone mentioned that a fever could be a possible side effect, so I'm nervous now.  I am getting that shot this Friday.  Not wanting a fever.
  • Well I had my follow up appt yesterday, and ever since I’ve just been feeling so down and crying off and on. First of all, she said I need to stop gaining any weight at this point. I’m up 28-29lbs and she said “that’s where you should be at 40 weeks”. Mind you, I eat really healthy during the week - the weekends I eat out more. But most of the weight gain was from first tri struggles.

Second, I’m still wheezing when I lay down. And having these instances where I take a sudden deep breath out of nowhere as though I’m catching my breath. She said the catching my breath could be normal, but wheezing isn’t. She wants me to take Pepcid daily to rule out acid reflux as the cause, and if that doesn’t work then start an inhaler with steroids in it to rule out pregnancy induced asthma. And if that still doesn’t help then have to do full cardiac work up to make sure it’s not a heart problem.

And today I take my 1 hr glucose test and I’m pretty sure I’m going to fail it bc this weight gain is 100% from the way my body processes carbs (PCOS) so I’m also just freaking out at the thought of having GD.

Overall, I’m just struggling hard emotionally and DH hasn’t been the best support which is a bummer bc he usually is. Bleh.
  • @mrsc918 I'm so sorry that doc's visit wasn't the best. I'm so sorry YH isn't as supportive as usual either, that's definitely icing on the cake I bet. Did she give you any advice on stopping gaining weight? I feel like that's super hard unless there are clear objectives. I hope you pass your glucose test--that would be a nice surprise considering everything! But if not, know: you can do this! we're almost there! GL with everything, and I hope you feel better soon.
  • @mrsc918 I’m so sorry your doctor made you feel not great about everything. How awful to tell a woman not to gain any more weight, as if it’s super easy at this stage in pregnancy. Did she give you any suggestions as how to do that?! Also good luck with your glucose test. I hope all goes well. I’m a fellow PCOS-er. I never thought about that being the reason for failing glucose tests.
  • I'm sorry for the tough appointment @mrsc918

afm - I have a dental appt today that I made because my gums are giving me hell. I've never been so excited to see a dentist before ha

  • @kagesstarshroom @miss.sally yeah she suggested doing the gestational diabetes meal plans to stop gaining weight. But even with that meal plan, you still eat healthy carbs (bc baby needs carbs, and still will make me gain weight) so not sure if that will really help. And then you hear that in third tri you should be eating 500 additional cals a day, and that alone is enough to gain 1 lb a week lol I don’t want to starve my baby by cutting cals which for me is the only way I maintain weight so I’m prerty sure I’m screwed. Oh and she said start exercising, so I’m gonna start at least going on walks daily.

yes @miss.sally, PCOS makes you high risk for GD bc of the insulin resistance factor of PCOS. And similarly, insulin resistance is the biggest factor in GD. Although some PCOSers don’t have the insulin resistance factors.

@mrsc918 your OB really rubbed me the wrong way with that comment. I'm so confused as to what she expects from you? How can you NOT gain weight when your baby that you're carrying in your womb is GAINING weight?! Also, fat reserves begin to kick up a notch now for breastfeeding post partum. Your OB sounds obnoxious and I'd be so angry too. I'm sorry! Keep doing you and don't let the negativity get you down. You're growing life!

  • @mrsc918 I’m sorry your OB said that! I gained too much last time (around 50lb) and while it’s not exactly ideal I can tell you it all came off post baby with some patience. I’m headed to be a bit over recommended this time too so I think I’m going to start being a little more careful after the holidays. I’ve been indulging my every whim and it’s probably not good for me or baby. If you’re eating relatively healthy and you add in walking I think you’re doing great!

I had my appt today but didn’t get to see the dr which was kind of a bummer but he was delivering babies. Apparently he’s been at the hospital all night for 5 women, 3 had babies by the time of my appt and 2 were still in labor 😱 The nurse answered most of my questions and got my prescription for the t-dap though. Only thing she didn’t do was fundal height which I’m a little nervous about bc I feel huge this time. Next appt in 4 weeks so hopefully he’s there then!

  • @varimama your post made me laugh bc I haven’t seen the OB that is spsd to deliver little miss yet this pregnancy. My doctor’s office is so busy. I’ve seen the other OB once and I have seen the NP every other appt.

He didn’t deliver DS so I’m not expecting to see him at all this pregnancy or delivery. I honestly would prefer to not have him as my delivery OB, unless I have a c-section bc he is the best surgeon in the area.

  • @silverhope oh wow, that’s crazy never seeing your OB. I feel like seeing the NP at this stage doesn’t matter. I’d be a little worried only seeing them once it gets to the point of cervix checks. I think word must have gotten out how awesome my OB is bc last time I never had him miss an appt and this time he’s missed a few of them. Or it could be I used to do early morning appts and now I’ve been doing lunch time appts so DH can tag along and get lunch after.  I just hope that I don’t go into labor on one of his off weekends bc I’ve never met the other OB he trades every other weekend with. I’m sure at the time I won’t care but he’s the reason I’m choosing to drive an hour for appts/hospital so it’d be a bummer not to have him.

  • @mrsc918 I’m so sorry for everything on your shoulders right now! That is SO disappointing of your doctor. I get that weight and pregnancy have certain implications on either end of the spectrum, but what happened to understanding that everyone has different bodies?! I think the medical profession has a lot of growth to do around weight and bodies. My old gastroenterologist actually told me “nothing tastes as good as skinny feels” at my last appointment. I couldn’t even. Have you ever been interested in seeing a therapist? I am obsessed with therapy lol. It sounds like it could be helpful!
  • @mrsc918, I'm sorry your OB is giving you a hard time.  I'm in a similar boat weight-wise - I've gained 20 lb so far, which is the amount total I gained in my pregnancy with DS... so I know I've got to watch it a bit more, but I"m just not sure how that's all going to work out. I'll have to watch what I eat anyway due to gestational diabetes... which is going to be hard since all I've been craving this time around is sweets.  and even walking is no fun due to all kinds of pain this time around, so... it's rough.   I feel for you, I just want to cry sometimes also when I think about it because it's overwhelming.  I don't want to have to worry about weight when pregnant!  There's so many other things to think about.  The last thing a person in this situation needs is a doctor giving them crap.. so sorry that's happened to you.
  • @mrsc918 That makes sense. I feel like it was super unfair of your ob to tell you you can't gain any more weight at all when that seems unhealthy/impossible, esp. based on your comments. Is there someone else at the practice you could visit with to talk about this?

    @puppylove8910 Glad you passed!

@silverhope I am reading Babies Are Not Pizzas: They're Born, Not Delivered, and in the 1.5 chapters I've read so far she talks about her first birth experience early in the book and what, in retrospect, she feels like the practice/hospital got right and what they got wrong--and this was really illuminating to me. It made me so grateful that my Ob sits down with me every visit bc for her, that's the ONE thing they did right. Now I just have to advocate for myself so that more than that one thing goes right. Anyway, I recommend the book.
  • Had my 28 week appt this past Thursday. I had my 1 hr glucose screening (which I passed), my rhogam shot, and my Tdapp. I got a call on Friday saying I was developing anemia and should start taking iron supplements twice a day. I ordered iron gummies because I’m very sensitive to pill for vitamins or any kind! Hoping for the best!
  • Thanks for the support everyone!! I swear this app is so amazing for connection with others who GET IT! I think you guys
have really gotten me through the rollercoasters of pregnancy! I RAVE to people I know about this app! ❤️

@lemonlove86 I love therapy too!! I had a therapist who I loved for 3 years but she retired and unfortunately I haven’t been able to find a good therapist that works with my schedule since :( I have an HMO health plan so I’m stuck finding someone in network.

@treetop19 seriously! I feel like the only good thing about being pregnant is you are able to be less strict on your diet! I’m usually on some kind of diet trying to either lose or maintain my weight so it’s been nice to live a little! Honestly I decided that I’m just going to keep living my life and not stress about the weight gain.

@silverhope I’m in a somewhat similar position where I won’t be seeing who is delivering my baby. I actually won’t even know who it is lol For Kaiser, you just get whoever is working inpatient that day, not the OB who you have been seeing at your appointments. I didn’t like it at first but add that to the list of $?!& I have no control over lol
