Vegetarian Mamas

I noticed in other threads there was quite a few fellow vegetarians! I thought we could use this as a support thread for meal ideas, supplements etc.

Ive only been vegetarian for a year and since then I’ve been trying to transition to a fully plant based diet. It’s been tough but I just do the best I can!

I had bloodwork done a few months ago and B12 and iron levels were fine.. so I’m hoping they hold up during pregnancy. I take a B complex (daily since I’ve been pregnant).

Ive found it a bit harder being pregnant and consuming enough calories due to food aversions! Especially the last week I’ve been living off carbs mostly and have been soo hungry (but turned off of food at the same time).

Does everyone else plan on feeding their baby vegetarian? Is your SO vegetarian?

Mine is not but very supportive and trying to make more plant based choices/ meat free meals. He’s Slightly hesitant about having a vegetarian child but he realizes I’ll be the one home the most and feeding the child. There definitely could be some arguments about this in the future. So I’m looking for ideas / support from STM + !

Im also curious why everyone became vegetarian!?

For me it was a combination of health reasons, environmental and mainly ethical. I’ve never really liked meat but I always thought if I quit eating it I’d lose too much weight! I finally did some research and made the commitment and it’s been so great! I’ve really expanded the foods I eat and feel I eat so much healthier. I’ve maintained my weight and feel so much better (better digestion, more energy). I also feel like I’m doing some good for the planet and animals! :)

Re: Vegetarian Mamas

  • I've been vegan for 12ish+ years. My husband is a super supportive omni. We've agreed for baby to be vegan until it's old enough to understand what meat is and make somewhat reasonable decisions.

I live in Philadelphia which is amazingly pro-vegan (I'm a 5 minute walk from 3 separate all vegan businesses: coffee shop/bakery, grocery/convenience store, and restaurant) so I'm very lucky to have lots of options, support and inspiration.

I went vegan for ethical reasons but environmental/health concerns have definitely become more of a factor for me in later life.

I've been tracking my nutrient intake in MyFitnessPal to make sure I'm doing well and so far have just been knocking it out of the park without much effort.

I take prenatals and b12, and drink fortified "milks" as well as OJ.

My main concern right now is how I will fit everything in my stomach as my belly gets bigger as I typically eat a very large volume of veggies😂😂😂.

    Typical day rn looks like:

    English muffin + avocado/hummus around 6am
    Walk 2.5 miles to work
Breakfast burrito + protein shake around 9 or 10am
Lunch at 12 has been high quality frozen entrees for now but hoping to go back to leftovers once my energy goes back up 🤦‍♀️
Fruit + nuts and/or hummus + pretzels as afternoon snack
Possible gym session and/or Walk 2.5 miles home
Homemade dinner with lots of protein (beans, tempeh, seitan, tofu) and veggies; fanciness depending on energy.
Fruit + nuts or granola for dessert... or ice cream 😊

  • I love this thread! I've been vegetarian for 18 years, since the end of middle school (I'm 30 now). My older sister showed me PETA videos and I was too sad for the animals. I'm a veggie because I like animals too much, but I don't mind the taste so I eat substitutes like quorn and gardein. I'm not really in it for the health reasons. I'm a very bad eater! Haha.

My sister is also vegetarian, and my brother and SIL are vegan, so I've had a great support system.

When people ask if MH is a vegetarian, I say, "no, he's Italian." Both DS (1 1/2) and DH eat both meat/fish and substitutes. Actually DS likes quorn chick'n better than real chicken. 😆
DS is also on a partial dairy free diet due to stomach issues, so he does nut milk, yogurt, and cheeses.

I've never, in all 18 years, taken any B supplements, and the doctors always say my levels are fine 🤷.

I will add, my prenatals are not vegetarian. They have fish oil in them. But I've decided that's ok for medical reasons.

But I'm excited to see so many vegetarians!

@emibemily a great vegan Chinese place in Philly just closed. New Harmony. I hope you got to go!
  • @babybison I did several times 😊. I believe the owner retired. Luckily there are many other awesome places!
  • This is a fantastic thread!

I've been vegetarian my entire life, my parents raised me vegetarian. Since last year i've slowly tried to cut back on dairy because of my endo. I've heard its very inflammatory in nature. I'm not fully vegan, I still eat yogurt (for the probiotics) and the occasional butter and ghee. I've been trying to incorporate more yogurt and ghee these days to help my body and the pregnancy.

My family's vegetarian for ethical and health reasons, and they never forced me to be vegetarian, but I can't fathom eating meat, i just love animals and the earth too much. I would ideally want to be fully vegan one day.

Foods i eat include: protein smoothies with nut milk and fruits for breakfast. Stir fry veggies with rice or an avacado sandwich for lunch. Trail mix or nuts with chocolate as a snack. I recently had a couple of boiled eggs this week and i really loved how the yolk tasted. I gave up eggs last year but I think my body is liking it these days, so i might indulge in eggs every now and then. Dinner is typically a wrap with hummus or rice and beans with some salsa or some quinoa with veggies.

@emibemily - It's amazing you walk 5 miles everyday! i wish i would be doing that.
  • @sanpelligrino I only put that in to explain the absurd amount of food I eat hahahhaha. I literally eat all day every day.
  • Oh and i forgot to mention, DH is vegetarian too, so we dont have an issue raising a vegetarian kid. Sorry we're not a lot of help in that regard. However, the thought does cross our mind every now n then. It's tough to be restrictive when majority of the population eats meat. So i guess we will have to start thinking creatively on how to nurture responsible and healthy kids.
  • @emibemily I just downloaded my fitness pal! What a cool app! That is amazing you’ve been vegan for so long, that’s my ultimate goal! What is your breakfast burrito recipe?

    @babybison 18 years! That’s fantastic!

@sanpelligrino so awesome your parents raised you vegetarian! I’m curious what age you were when your parents started educating you about it and how they did it? I’ve always said I’d feed my kid plant-based until they were old enough to decide for themself.

Ive been getting the vegetarian hello fresh meal boxes for almost a year. Unfortunately they don’t have a vegan option but it’s really given me a lot of meal inspiration and introduced me to new foods that I now love!
  • I "declared" myself vegetarian around 14 so my mom would stop bugging me about eating the meat she served. I just hated it. Not for me. I am a horrible cook though and my diet has always been carb heavy. My husband is an amazing cook but he relies on meat alternatives to make along his meat meals. Our DS is absolutely not a vegetarian but he knows that I am.
I've started making my own seitan and it has been life changing. The Abbey in Philly always hosted the vegan wing bowl for roller derby and I so missed it after moving to Amish country. I am always battling getting enough protein while keeping my soy intake down. Love me some peanut butter!
  • I’ve been a vegetarian for 13 years. I was never a big fan of how meat tasted prior to becoming a vegetarian. I’m a big animal lover, but the big reason I became a veg was when I was a science major in college and dissected a lot of animals and cadavers in grad school, so that turned me off from it even more. My husband is not a vegetarian, but all of our dinners we make together are vegetarian, so he basically eats meat only when we go out to eat and at lunch. I get my protein from legumes, Quorn, quinoa, Greek yogurt and Protein/superfood shakes, and eggs. I occasionally eat tofu, but I try not to eat too much soy because it upsets my stomach. I don’t know what our baby will eat. Probably mostly vegetarian, since that’s what we will have at home, but I’m not against him/her eating meat.
  • @babybison New harmony and kingdom of vegetarians! Meal for three even though there wer only two of us, haha. Leftovers for days!
  • Hello Everyone,

The TWW is over and I just found out I'm expecting.  I think I actually might be due early May, but I don't see a board.  I hope it's okay to post here.

I switched to a vegetarian diet about 5 years ago.  I sometimes go back and forth between being a vegetarian and a pescatarian.  I rarely prepare seafood, but sometimes I'll have it if I'm eating out.  Since it's so early I guess I'll just listen to my body and be grateful to eat anything that doesn't make my stomach upset.  My appetite has been very low since about 7 DPO.  I didn't associate it with pregnancy because I didn't know I was expecting lol.   Part of me is wondering if I'll start craving meat like Phoebe  in "Friends".

My DH is a proud meat eater.   The adjustment was a little rough at first, but now we're used to it.  A lot of time we make complimentary meals.  For example, if we make tacos, I make a bean based filled and DH makes meat.  Sometimes I'll make something and DH will make a side of meat to go with it.  We make it work.

  • What a great thread! Nice to know others are vegetarian or plant-based as well. I was plant-based for a few years, but now I sometimes indulge in fancy cheese at parties, I go back and forth on including organic free-range eggs in my diet, and on a rare occasion I’ll order seafood when eating out. I suppose I’m still finding the right balance for my health and my ethics!

DH has been vegetarian for years at a time, though he isn’t right now. I do anticipate that we’ll start kiddo on a veggie diet and, like others have said, try to figure out how to help him/her navigate the decision to eat meat when older.

I love the meal ideas - morning sickness hit hard the last two weeks, and suddenly I was only eating carbs. Looking forward to getting back in a rhythm this week. I’ve found some great recipes over the years on Cookie and Kate, Yup It’s Vegan, and Minimalist Baker, etc. I would love to know where you all find inspiration!
  • @jenabary I follow a ton of vegan pages on instagram. The recipes are endless! I also have a oh she glows cookbook and the app. The MS hit me hard the last 2 weeks also! I’ve been eating a lot of oatmeal for breakfast lately which is bland enough and easy to stomach. Also lots of fruit and raw veggies. Toast and BP/avocado is always a favorite! I’m finding the idea of cooking the hardest right now due to the smells.

@lizm1234 welcome! You’re certainly welcome to post here!! I felt great the first few weeks of my pregnancy and the food aversions/ nausea hit around week 7. Even the thought of meat would make me gag! I couldn’t even eat this beyond meat I had cooked!! I was watching TV yesterday though and someone had a sandwich with meat and I thought it looked good. It’s tough because I’m hungry constantly yet have so many aversions!

  • I'm craving mac'n'cheese right now, but my toddler is slightly dairy free and I'm not in the mood to make his vegan Mac as well as my own. My preggo nose thinks his smells like stinky feet. 😷
  • I made plain rotelle noodles with daiya cheez sauce (which I usually dont like) on them this weekend and now its all I want to eat 🤤🤤🤤
  • I tried daiya mac and cheese the other day and it was surprisingly good!!
  • We've been using the Annie's version. Maybe we should try daiya
  • The daiya cheez sauce (separately packaged, not 100% sure if it's the same for their mac and cheese) is really similar to the cheese in the velveeta mac and cheese boxes which was my jam in college
  • I used to be vegetarian for a good 4 years, but was struggling badly with anemia and stopped. I've still never been comfortable eating a lot of meat and this pregnancy has only amplified that. I have had no interest in eating meat at all! Still eating fish, but following this thread for the meal ideas for non-fish days.
  • Do you ladies have ideas on what i could make with almond flour. I got it to make healthy breads and tacos, but noticed the consistency was so different to all purpose flour. So i'm feeling a little stuck right now. I would love to make almond flour pancakes, not sure if thats a thing?
  • You can make macarons. Yum.

  • @babybison I wish i was that talented LOL

@sanpelligrino In my experience you need to use a blend of gluten free flours to get anything to come out tasty and that sticks together. We use king Arthur flour baking mix when doing gluten free.

@babybison this is the second mention of macaroons today and I am feeling like I must have them now!
  • thanks for the tip @macguyvermom i'm going to try that!
  • Bumping up so we don't forget about it 👀
  • @sanpelligrino Almond flour pancakes are very much a thing! It was in this season of Queer Eye! If you're not vegan egg is a great binding agent that will help. Won't be exactly the same, but still close and it's higher in protein.
  • Ladies i made almond flour pancakes (with eggs this time). It was delish!!!
  • Do you ladies use protein powder ? if yes, which one? I've been using hemp protein powder (Nutiva) in my smoothies and its been good so far. From what i've read hemp protein seems safe during pregnancy since it doesn't have THC.
  • @sanpelligrino I have Vega. It’s alright! Sometimes I find it overpowering in smoothies. Anyone have good smoothie recipes that include protein!?

I used to use arbonne protein powder. I liked the taste of that much more!
  • *lurking from February* This thread is the best! I'm so jealous there are so many vegetarians on this BMB.

@sanpelligrino I like Whole Foods brand pea protein isolate to add to smoothies or even oatmeal. It's super duper plain and only a tiny bit chalky which is an improvement over most that I've tried.
  • @craftywitch I was using the Trader Joes pea protein and once i finished that, i switched over to the hemp protein from whole foods. Once this is done, i'm going to go back to the pea protein from whole foods.

@kath1414 I tried the chocolate flavored Vega sometime last year and didnt quite liked how it mixed in my smoothies, so you're right! I'll have to look up the arbonne protein as well, never heard of that one.
  • I don't have patience to bother with smoothies but these sound like great ideas!
  • Checking in!

Hows everyone doing with their diets? I know mine could be better.

Im not as nauseous or as sensitive to smells.. and I’m hungry all the time but as soon as I have a healthy dish to eat I have no appetite. Just pick away at it slowly. I’m still finding it easiest to eat carbs!

I know I need to eat more and healthier and I’m feeling guilty about it!
  • Same about the carbs. There just so much easier to stomach. I try to eat apple and peanut butter too to get some protein.

My OB recommends 30g of protein starting in the second trimester. It seems like an impossible task seeing as I can even drink the recommended amount of water.

Do you guys have any ideas? I thought about adding a protein shake, but they just taste so blech to me. 🤔
  • I'm looking for ideas too ladies. My diet hasn't been great and I have been having a hard time eating. So filling up on carbs seems the easiest thing to do. I keep seeing recipes for protein snack balls with nuts, protein powder etc, but have been lazy to try something out in the kitchen.
  • @babybison @sanpelligrino Have you guys ever tried hemp hearts? They have lots of protein and are basically tasteless. I try to remember to sprinkle some on my peanut butter toast! (Something easy to stomach).

Otherwise I’m not much help right now. My diet mainly consists of bread and fruit. I’ve developed serious fruit cravings in this pregnancy! I’ve been adding some salads back in the last few weeks though.

I have hope that things will get better! I’m 15 weeks now and my nausea and food aversions are about 90% gone and I’m way less tired so might have some more kitchen motivation. I just have to get back into the habit.
  • @kath1414 I do hemp hearts on avocado! I started giving them to DS at 6mo to help grip the slices, and now I just eat it all the time. And I try to add chia seeds to yogurt and stuff.

I might add a chocolate milk. Not even a healthy one. Just a regular kids milk box. There's like 9g in there and it actually tastes worth it
  • I need to pay attention to this thread!  I'm not vegetarian by choice but most meat doesn't appeal to me normally and I'm having a really had time eating any proteins this pregnancy.
  • Amy's margherita pizza has 16grams of protein and no meat. 💜
  • I’m 17 weeks now and almost am back to eating normally. I think problem is I’ve just gotten into a habit of eating carbs now.. they are so addicting it’s hard to stop! I also have SO much more energy now. So for anyone who is a bit behind me and still dealing with fatigue and is worried it’s their diet (like I was) it gets better!!! I think I have more energy now then I did pre pregnancy.

@babybison I also love avocado on toast with hemp hearts! I love avocado so I can easily spread a whole one over 2 pieces of toast. Pretty simple.
