edited October 2019 in Pregnant after IF

Happy Monday! Sorry for the delay, I somehow injured my foot just by walking and spent all day yesterday getting a bunch of tests done to rule out everything except a break (cause no one wants to do an X-ray on a pregnant woman!).

  • How far along/EDD?
  • How are you feeling this week?
  • Rants/Raves? Questions?
  • Any upcoming appointments?
  • GTKY: have you read any good books lately?

Re: 1st/2nd trimester check in week of October 21

  • Hello all and sorry for the long silence...

Not quite sure where the time has gone but somehow 4 weeks seem to have gone by without managing to contribute, so I’m sorry for that. I have been reading your updates in the odd spare moment, so don’t feel completely out of the loop, but it’s been hard to find the time to write too.

Having said that, all is well and we’ve just got back from a week’s holiday in the south of France, which was really lovely. Although aka the ‘babymoon’ recommended by so many sites, DH and I seem to be in a bit of a honeymoon phase at the moment - he’s been particularly affectionate and attentive, and I think he’s getting the benefit of all the maternal tenderness the hormones are driving, while baby is still essentially out of reach!!

    • How far along/EDD? 24 weeks - woohoo! 10 Feb 2020
    • How are you feeling this week? Generally pretty good (felt great on holiday and was proud I managed 2 short uphill hikes to visit 2 châteaux perched on the top of a hill) but starting to get some physical niggles reminding me the easy phase won’t last forever 😉
    • Rants/Raves? Questions?

Rants: ongoing right-sided neck pain that has been annoying me since we slept on a friend’s narrow bed in July; the osteopath at work has seen me 3 times but it hasn’t gone away which is quite frustrating; difficulty lacing up my shoes (does anyone else have this already in the 2nd trimester?), difficulty bending generally without stomach pain or heartburn; arrgh heartburn! For me it’s more a painful pressure at the top of the oesophagus which also puts me off eating... but it seems to happen before meals as often as after...

... And finally back/side pain when sitting... the only down side of our trip away was the time spent in the car, as I found it more and more impossible to get comfortable in the seat, however much I adjusted the different bits. Feels like a sort of right-sided stitch which makes me want to lean forward in order to stretch out that part of the back, but no position seems to make it go away. And the worst thing is that since getting back the discomfort is there all the time when sitting, whatever sort of chair I’m in. Has anyone else had anything similar??

Gosh that was a lot of rants! Raves:

Pretty much what I said about DH... even if he hasn’t yet made me pancakes in bed ;-) The amazing weather and lovely relaxing time we had on holiday. And all the kicks I’m feeling! Baby J seems to be pretty active these days despite the anterior placenta.

    • Any upcoming appointments?

Nothing imminent as we had a gynae appointment and also the anatomy scan just before going away. Seeing the heart beating and the ventricles in the brain was amazing! The scan was all good apart from one of the kidneys which measured a bit large, so we’re having a follow-up at what I assume is the equivalent of a MFM unit here in a couple of weeks. I’m not too worried about it at present, as from what I’ve read it’s quite likely to resolve itself naturally.

    • GTKY: have you read any good books lately? I’m reading ‘The Organized Mind’ by Daniel Levitin at the moment - in the hope of setting up some good systems before baby comes and it all goes out of the window haha! The first part was very interesting, even though many of the ideas were familiar they were presented in a thought-provoking way.. the middle bits I’m finding less original, but still a good read (tbh I love anything on productivity that allows me to dream of a hypothetical streamlined existence!). Will let you know my final verdict at the end!
  • @PoeMasque oh no!!! Hope your foot is at least feeling better today? Do they think it’s broken in the end?
Oh and the tags work!!! Thanks!

How far along/EDD? 20+3 7th March - Saturday was our “Bon Jovi” day (woah, we’re half way there...)
How are you feeling this week? Still on a bit of a high from our anatomy scan last week, but of course peppered with anxiety still from time to time. My belly is suddenly feeling huge. I actually measure it every night (yes... I measure and control everything!) and it is really 2 inches bigger round and 1 inch bigger top to bottom. The constipation is unreal. 3 days of increasing hell then 1 day of relief. I lose 1.5kg every 4 days then slowly put it all back on... then lose it again... Appetite is good as long as it’s before 6pm, if not I get huge headaches but I just try to make sure I eat now!
Rants/Raves? Questions? Rave - this girl is kicking up a storm. For about 15-20 minutes every hour she does what I can only assume is Olympic standard gymnastics - I had thought it would take a lot more weeks to determine her pattern but she seems pretty set already these 1.5 weeks. It does freak me out if I realize I didn’t feel her for a few hours though. But omg I love this feeling so so much.Rant - my blood pressure. It’s still officially within normal range, but it is 20 points higher than my own normal and has been for the past week. At the anatomy scan they made a special note to follow up next week. But if I get three consecutive readings with the diastolic over 140 then I have to go straight into my OB (or to the hospital if it’s on the weekend). Really hoping it’s just been linked to the work stress and that when we have a few days off next week it settles back down again. 20 weeks is way too early for pre-eclampsia and a good outcome...
Any upcoming appointments? Next monitoring Wednesday next week (unless my BP takes me in first...) mostly to check on my placenta and to do the first of the Bi weekly growth scans the specialist prescribed last week...
GTKY: have you read any good books lately? All I have time to read are pregnancy books these days! When I used to have time before IF became my focus, then I loved crime novels. Guess I’m dreaming of a nice long summer sitting on my terrace with a sleeping baby in one arm and such a book in the other... ahhh...

Oh and I’m sorry to hear about your foot @PoeMasque - that sounds very painful, I hope it isn’t broken after all, you don’t need that on top of everything else! Hope that you manage to rest it a bit and it rights itself soon...

PS don’t know where you are in the world, but for me it’s Tuesday evening 😉
  • @PoeMasque I hope it isn't broken and you feel better soon!

@emmasemm Those kicks must feel so amazing! And I hope your BP stays under control.

    How far along/EDD? - 5+2/ June 21st

How are you feeling this week? - Better than last week emotionally. I've now had 3 great betas that more than doubled so that is a relief. (379 at 12dp5dt, 1007 at 14dp5dt, and 2844 at 16dp5dt) And my progesterone is finally under control and in perfectly normal range. I did have some weird spotting the other night but I think it was suppository related. Just going to be super anxious until I get through these first few early scans and hopefully pass my loss milestones.

Rants/Raves? Questions - I already asked my nurse this question and the pharmacist but did anyone else get the flu shot in the first trimester? My nurse seemed adamant that there wasn't a risk and that I should definitely get it sooner than later. I ended up getting it today on my lunch break from work. But part of me is a little worried. With my pregnancy with DS it wasn't flu season until I was in second tri so it wasn't an issue. A lot of googling has said that it's safe any trimester but some things I read says experts may say to wait until second tri. The timing was worrisome though since this the beginning of flu season and I'd rather be protected than wait and get the flu and it be even worse. But after 2 losses this year I'm so afraid to do anything that might jeopardize the pregnancy.

Any upcoming appointments - First scan next week 10/30

GTKY: have you read any good books lately? - Last non pregnancy/IF related book I read was the hunger games lol

    • How far along/EDD? May 28  9+6
    • How are you feeling this week? Yesterday was terrible (DFW had some stormy weather Sunday night that left us super sleep deprived) Today feeling much better, energy level is rising and I'm getting a break from the bloat today
    • Rants/Raves? Questions? Rant: My twins have the sniffles and are in the coughing it up stage. My daughter thinks that every time she coughs at night she needs soothing. RAVE: Totally just scored the twins their big Christmas gift from DH and I. A used kitchen set for half price, Facebook marketplace ftw! Second Rave: only 8 more shots to go!
    • Any upcoming appointments? Last appt with the RE is this next Monday.
    • GTKY: have you read any good books lately? So The Lady Sherlock Series, The Hollow of Fear just hit my desk. I've only just started it but I have high hopes as each of them has gotten better. This is the third in the series. Last one I finished in audio, sci fi, title, Foundryside. I thought it was really good and have been recommending it to others.
@PoeMasque Oh no, that isn't what you need right now! How's the new job settling in?

@hanshotfirst77 yeah for strong betas! I'm excited for your scan next week. I think its more important that you are protected from the flu! It can be really serious while pregnant and think the risk to your pregnancy from catching the flu is greater than any possible vaccine issues. @PoeMasque maybe you can offer more advice/reassurance as a medically knowledgeable person?

@emmasemm I'm hoping that a couple of days of stress relief drop down that BP! They've been testing your urine for protein at your appointments? So long as the protein stays down they can prescribe pregnancy safe BP meds to help get you further along if it continues to trend upward.

@cigaline The south of France sounds amazing! I'm so glad that you guys enjoyed yourself and spent some time and attention on each other. Its a really great thing to feel super connected before your little one arrives. It sounds like maybe the back/side pain is your rib cage is beginning to expand to accommodate the pregnancy.

  • @stella_700 Thank you, that is pretty much what my nurse said too. I'm sure I'm just being paranoid.
I am so excited you are almost done with shots and totally jealous lol And that is awesome about the gift for your twins, I have been searching for one for my DS, that was going to be his big gift this year too!

  • @hanshotfirst77 Paranoia is part of this process unfortunately. When you've invested so much working towards this successful pregnancy, I'd be surprised if we weren't paranoid and anxiety ridden.

As for the shots, this time around I've had all sorts of issues with them so I've been counting down the days for the last two weeks. : )
  • Hi everyone! Since @k_mama91 are I are still the only ones in the 3rd tri (I believe) I hope it's ok that I continue to stick around here
    • How far along/EDD? 28+3, 1/11
    • How are you feeling this week? Getting more physically tired each day. I can't seem to walk a whole lot without getting a side cramp. Feeling bigger each day too. I really feel like this stomach is growing by the minute.
    • Rants/Raves? Questions? Rave - DH and I took off work this week and are now away for a few days. We're not too far from home, only about 2 hour drive, so it's more of a staycation, but we're enjoying sleeping in, taking a nap mid-day, taking walks and just each other's company. Also, the baby movements are getting stronger. DH was resting his head on my belly last night and got a few good kicks in the head that he thoroughly enjoyed. Rant - so apparently skin tags are a thing when you're pregnant? It's like I find out new things all the time. Never had a skin tag in my life and I have a huge one now that's starting to hurt. I'm going to ask my OB if there's a safe way to remove it. Otherwise, I don't know how I'll wait 2+ more months to get rid of it...ugh!
    • Any upcoming appointments? None this week. Have a scan next Wednesday and can't wait to see the baby!
    • GTKY: have you read any good books lately? Recently read The Wedding Date as I was looking for a fun, easy read so I enjoyed that one. Now started reading The Kind Worth Killing. I'm only on chapter 2, so can't say how it is yet.
@PoeMasque I'm so sorry about your foot! I hope it's not broken!

@cigaline A vacation in the south of France sounds so great! I hope you had the best time! I've had back discomfort with both pregnancies, and mainly on my right side. I just try to alternate sitting and standing as much as I can to stretch my body but nothing really has helped me much either unfortunately.

@emmasemm I hope your blood pressure stays under control! I also feel like I have an Olympic gymnast inside of me. The moves come out especially when I am laying down in bed or when I eat a good meal. I joke that she will be a big foodie because the movement to me eating are just funny to me. It's like she acknowledges that she's happy to be well fed.

@hanshotfirst77 congrats on continued great betas! I would agree with the above comment. I'd think that if flu shots were not recommended during 1st trimester, doctors would warn us. Did you tell them that you were pregnant when getting the shot? I got mine last week and just asked the pharmacy to confirm it's pregnancy safe to just be sure, which they did. I would think you have nothing to worry about.

@stella_700 I hope your twins feel better soon! Yay on scoring such a great gift for them and also on only having 8 more shots to go!

  • Eep! Sorry for leaving the happy Monday part of the post....it’s Tuesday for me too! And thanks for all the well wishes. I will get an X-ray tomorrow to see if it’s broken, but this afternoon I have finally been able to hobble around without needing super strong pain meds, so whatever is going on is definitely improving!

@cigaline Sooo lovely to hear DH is being extra affectionate. One of my absolute favorite parts of becoming a parent is watching my hubby with our son and the amazing parent that he is. I also had really bad backside pain with my first. My tailbone kept pulling to one side and it made sitting unbearable. A physical therapist was able to release it with some, sort of painful, massage, but it was a constant problem my entire pregnancy last time.

@emmasemm Sorry to hear about the BP issues. Good to hear they are monitoring it closely. There are definitely interventions that are effective if needed, but I’m sure it’s still stressful to have that looming.

@hanshotfirst77 the flu shot is safe anytime in pregnancy and it takes about 2 weeks to be fully effective, so I always counsel people to get it as soon as possible. Once people around you are getting the flu it can be too late to protect you from it, so get it before cases start popping up if you can. You definitely don’t want the flu while pregnant. The only caveat I can think of is that there’s research on the pertussis shot protecting baby better (up to one year after birth) if it’s administered between 24-32 weeks. Later is less effective, not sure about earlier.....but I’m also not sure if the flu shot protects baby once their out like pertussis does.

@Tulips29 of course y’all are welcome to stay here as long as you want :) I don’t have skin tags, but I got cherry angiomas last time (at least 50!) and am getting more this time. They start really small, but some of them keep growing and this time I have one on my lower lip. I am pretty sure you can snip off skin tags easily in the doctors office (or freeze?) and it shouldn’t matter that you’re pregnant.

    • How far along/EDD? 24+3, 2/8
    • How are you feeling this week? Aside from the stupid foot injury I feel pretty good! Using crutches while pregnant is really really hard though! Lots of really strong kicks, but this kiddo seems a little more calm than DS and condenses his kicks into a few times per day instead of all day long, which I’m totally fine with :)
    • Rants/Raves? Questions? Rave - I passed the glucose test with flying colors! Also - despite being in so much pain that I couldn’t sleep for 2 days, DH has been amazing. He’s basically doing everything, cooking, cleaning, all of the care for DS, plus he’s constantly running me ice packs and snacks as I lay on the couch with my foot up. If it were me I would be a total grump, but he’s been good natured about all of it.
    • Any upcoming appointments? Nothing for a month
    • GTKY: have you read any good books lately? Two books that I borrowed from a friend and cannot recommend enough for any woman to read: Invisible Women (how women are excluded from literally everything because no data is collected on us) and Why Are There So Many Incompetent Men in Leadership. One book that completely changed my view on parenting is How Emotions Are Made - it has been sooooo helpful in dealing with tantrums and understanding/helping our son with his emotional development.

  • @PoeMasque How emotions are made is getting added to my to read list. I've got a little guy with his daddy's temper, from the hangriness all the way through the frustration to rage triggers.
  • @stella_700 Raising a Secure Child is another good one. I took the class, called Circle of Security (if you can find one it’s seriously amazing!!) and the model fits really well with Feldman’s work on emotional development. I’ll admit, it’s still super hard when my son bites or kicks me.....but at least I have a good framework and tools haha.

  • Hey everyone! Sorry to be late to the game (for whatever reason it seems to take around 12 hours since the original post went up for me to see it - weird!)

@cigaline - nice to hear how you’re doing! South of France sounds amazing!! I can’t help but be jealous of you ladies living in Europe - I would love to go back one day! Sorry about all the pains and aches you’ve been having. I’ve been pretty lucky so far with the aches, but definitely by the end of the day I feel quite stretched and achy around my abdomen and just tired. Hope you get some relief, even if it’s just one area like your neck!

@emmasemm - don’t you just love those kicks!! Like you, I just can’t get enough! I really hope your BP lowers and life doesn’t dole out any crazy, stressful stuff your way. Keep us updated on how it’s going! Also, love the Bon Jovi reference - I’m going to have to listen to it soon as a motivator lol

@hanshotfirst77 - congrats on such great betas and with things continuing to go well! Sending you a bunch of good vibes your way for the scan and hope time flies by so you can find out how things are looking.

@stella_700 - awesome Xmas gift you scored for your twins! I loved having a little stand up kitchen play set lol.

@Tulip29 - sounds like a lovely staycation! Those are the best sometimes! So glad you and YH were able to get that opportunity to just get away and spend time together.

@PoeMasque - glad to hear your foot seems to be slowly healing. Major brownie points for YH and how big of a help he’s being!! And yay for passing the glucose test! I’ve also made a note about that book as I’m sure I’ll need as much help as possible dealing with tantrums.
    • How far along/EDD? 20w2d  3/9
    • How are you feeling this week? Much better. I seemed to be one of those unlucky pregnant women who did get the flu over the weekend. And since my body seems to respond by throwing up now when I’m sick (whether it’s a cold or what not), that was a “lovely” little addition to being flu-ish. I work in health care, so the flu shot is being offered this week at work, so just missed it lol. Still getting it obviously, but still feel a little like a car ran over me.
    • Rants/Raves? Questions? Kind of a mixed bag of a rant and a rave. DH was away out of the country for a week for a conference and just came back for a couple of days and now is back out of the country for a week doing interviews to try to get a pathology fellowship (he’s currently in his last year of residency). Although I’m so proud of him for all the hard work he does when it comes to his career since it all spirals back down to providing for his family, it is hard with him being away and just not knowing where we possibly may be living next summer. Without getting into the crazy specifics, we may end up living at home for a year and then going away or going away four months after the baby is born. Just a lot of unknowns right now. So, kind of a rant, but again it’s also a rave, because I’m just so proud of how dedicated and determined DH is. I know he’s doing it all for his family.
    • Any upcoming appointments? I have my anatomy scan this Friday!! Hoping to find out the sex, but also know that depending on the ultrasound technician they may not tell you, but wait for your OB to do that. If I don’t find out this week, I’ll phone my OB next week to find out. Sad that DH won’t be able to be there as he’ll still be out of the country, but we’re planning on going to one of the non-medical ultrasound places just so he can see a good shot of the baby.
    • GTKY: have you read any good books lately? Just finished “The Outsider” which is one of Stephen King’s latest novels. Wasn’t the best of his I’ve read, but still good. Now reading “The Stand” and really enjoying it (yeah, I’m a bit of a horror/thriller fan lol).

  • @sincethelastday
I can relate to you on the DH work issues -- while we don't anticipate moving anytime soon, my DH is a seniors systems admin for a local medical school and he works crazy hours with trips to a conferences. It leaves me alone for most of the baby/household tasks, but we've managed to find a balance and I'm sure you will too. What helped was picking out a few things DH could help with when he's at home (he likes keeping track of our home reno and he'll wash dishes/take care of the dogs). It also is a bit of a help that our baby immediately gravitates towards him when he's home as it's such a special treat so he ends up watching her a lot and giving me a break too!  He actually got a massive promotion just a few weeks after the baby arrived so those first few months were stressful for everyone, but it worked out. Like you, I can't help but feeling grateful, despite the annoyances and difficulties, that he works so hard to make sure we have everything we need and most of what we want. I promise everything will work out in a good routine for you guys and you'll all adjust once the baby arrives!

    @stella_700
It must be going around - we're getting Anne a nice kitchen playset for Christmas this year (since our reno should HOPEFULLY BE FINISHED BY THEN). I can't decide whether to go with a standard plastic fisher-price style one or get one of the little fancier wood ones. It will probably just come down to price depending on what else we need to finish out her playroom.

  • Wow I’m late to the party this week!

@PoeMasque Ouch! Let us know how your X-ray goes today. I can’t imagine doing crutches with this big belly!

@cigaline Welcome back! I’m glad you enjoyed your vacation!

@hanshotfirst77 Yay for great betas! Sorry for your spotting, I did suppositories 3x/day and they irritated me horribly.

@emmasemm FX your blood pressure settles down, the possibility of complications so early is scary.

@stella_700 We got our big gift for ds squared away today and it’s such a relief. His birthday is right before Christmas so I struggle every year trying to get his gifts picked.

@Tulips29 My fellow 3rd tri mama! Has your energy tanked yet? I can hardly keep my eyes open these days.

@sincethelastday Sorry you’ve been sick. It’s taken a good 3 weeks for me to start feeling better after the junk that I had.
    • How far along/EDD? 34w tmrw due 12/5
    • How are you feeling this week? Large and in charge lol I’m very uncomfortable and sleepy
    • Rants/Raves? Questions? Pregnancy brain is in full force here. I sent ds to school with crazy hair Monday and turns out crazy hair day is NEXT Monday. He rocked red and blue hair all day.
    • Any upcoming appointments? Tmrw. My doctor is leaving the practice 12/31 and I really want to see him for my follow up appt after delivery. I’m going to ask about an induction the week of Thanksgiving to get in before he leaves. I’m very worried about PPD and I want to feel comfortable enough to bring it up and ask for help if needed and I don’t think I’ll be able to open up to a different doctor.
    • GTKY: have you read any good books lately? I absolutely cannot contribute to this GTKY bc I don’t read 🤭 I’ve never enjoyed it. Ds is reading a Boxcar Childrens book for a project that I’m overseeing if that counts?
  • Glad to hear that everyone is doing so well and moving along with healthy pregnancies!! @PoeMasque I'm so sorry about your foot and hope it heals quickly!
    • How far along/EDD? 16+4, April 4th
    • How are you feeling this week? Pretty good actually and I think that's the first time I've been able to say that since I got pregnant! I am finally getting over the sinus infection that invaded my system at the beginning of last week.
    • Rants/Raves? Questions? I'm really starting to show and my boobs are getting HUGE so it's getting REALLY hard to not look pregnant for my therapy clients. I decided I want to wait until after my anatomy scan on Nov 4th to tell them. Not sure why, I just want to. It's what feels right to me. I'm sure they all think I'm just really putting on weight but I can live with that, haha. Less than 2 weeks to go and then the cat will be out of the bag.
    • Any upcoming appointments? Regular prenatal appt with my OB on the 30th and then anatomy scan on the 4th! Haven't had an appt since Oct 2nd so I'm currently in that "I hope all is still well...." stage.
    • GTKY: have you read any good books lately? I'm currently reading The Last Wish which has been a fun read (for those who like fantasy fiction). I usually stick to the thriller/mystery genre. Some of my recent favorites have been Where the Crawdads Sing and Run Away.

  • @mbradfo2 - thanks for the encouraging words! It really does help hearing things like that, because some moments I really do worry that we’re getting too far over our heads with having a baby. I know that must sound ridiculous coming from someone with infertility. Of course, I’m over the moon excited to be having a baby finally, it just seems hard to imagine what life is going to be like afterwards and how much it’s going to change. I’ve always been a big planner and worrier, so I just need to learn to take it one day at a time.
  • For those looking at play kitchens, check out the ones at Ikea. They're great and cheap.
  • @persnickity
That's where we'll probably end up with they have so many good storage solutions for playrooms

  • @sincethelastday i'm so sorry you got the flu and I hope you recover quickly! FX you get to see the gender on the scan tomorrow!
@k_mama91 energy levels have tanked a long time ago lol. I wish I could take a daily nap. It's getting harder and harder to be physically active and I still have a long way to go. I'm with you on the pregnancy brain. I keep putting things in random places and then can't find them. And I'm sure your son looked super cool with his red and blue hair!

@wifeinraleigh28 so glad you're feeling better! How crazy is that your anatomy scan is 2 weeks away already, I feel like time is flying!

Thanks for the shoutout @PoeMasque ! First off, sorry to hear about the foot, I hope it isnt a fracture and heals really fast. Do you have to be on your feet a lot or are you able to take days off to rest?

    • How far along/EDD? - 16 weeks
    • How are you feeling this week? - I'm having round ligament pain and some overall discomfort, but otherwise no complaints! I think i'm also starting to have some acid reflux, it gets annoying if I dont eat small meals regularly.
    • Rants/Raves? Questions? I assume a lot of us plan on buying baby stuff during thanksgiving? Any tips and tricks on where to go ? we have an amazon and target registry so far.
    • Any upcoming appointments? Next week for a 2nd tri check
    • GTKY: have you read any good books lately? Currently reading 'Expecting Better' since everyone here recommended it. I barely get thru a chapter and i'm asleep most days, so it's going to take me a while :)
  • @sanpelligrino with DS we got some of the big items on sale during black friday sales. For example, we got a good deal on the uppababy vista stroller + car seat combo. Also some clothing I believe, but we didn't buy a whole lot ourselves. This time around we're planning to get him his big boy furniture during black friday sales and will just monitor discounts. If we find some amazing deals on items from our new registry, might get those too. I believe you can set up price alerts in google on items you're interested in as well. DH is really into these things so I told him to just be on the lookout for good deals, even though he's mainly interested in tech stuff
