Anyone else at the stage where their stomach feels bruised? It feels like I got into a fight and punched in the stomach. I remember the feeling last time, but I’m pretty sure it occurred much later on and my stomach was double in size.
@lemon poppy I don't think it is recommended to fast for the 1 hour. The 1 hour is meant to measure how you respond normally, without doing anything special. For the 3 hour, you are supposed to fast because they take a fasting blood sugar measurement before you drink the sweet drink. I wasn't given an option to repeat the 1 hour test. The 3 hour test wasn't fun, but I just brought my laptop and got some work done. I felt a little nauseated during, but didn't have any persisting GI issues after I left the doctor's office and ate a meal.
So there have been a few articles on the Bump that mention you should have your urine tested at every OB appointment...But no one’s asked me to pee in a cup this whole pregnancy! I don’t want to invite unnecessary intervention/drama, but is anyone else not doing this? Is there something important I’m missing?
I have to pee in a cup each visit, too. I know they look for protein in the urine as a sign of pre-eclampsia. Not quite sure what other conditions they may be looking for.
@midgerose86 my previous pregnancy 2 years ago I had to pee in a cup every visit. As @blueskychicago12 said, it was to test for proteins as a sign of pre-eclampsia. However, we're right in the period of time where it's starting to be phased out because apparently it's not a very accurate indicator, so some places are still doing it and some are not.
@midgerose86 - I switched doctors early in my 2nd tri because of this. The first one wasn't testing my urine. My new doctor tests every visit. It is VERY important to have it checked. Especially if you have elevated protein in your urine. As someone mentioned above if they miss the protein increase in your urine they can miss a preeclampsia diagnosis.
I've had more complications with this pregnancy then most but it would still really put me off if someone wasn't checking urine samples. My doula works with a new age type of midwife (not a nurse midwife) on some births and even she checks her patient's urine every single visit. It's the standard of care for pregnancy and OB's who don't do it really put me off.
@midgerose86 my urine has not been tested since the beginning of my pregnancy, but my midwife did mention that since I'm doing the glucose test soon she would also do some bloodwork to check iron levels etc.
anyone paint any walls or rooms while pregnant? Is it ok? I didn’t think anything of it until my friend just texting me telling me to not paint bc Of the fumes.... I have a small project I’d like to get done before the baby comes and now I’ll be sad if I can’t do it 🥺
@ktmaesim if the windows are open and the room is ventilated you’ll be fine. You could wear a mask as well but if it’s a small project i’d Still do it.
@ktmaesim I've painted a bunch. I used low VOC paints and stayed away from the oil based stuff that is really fumey, and like @ale9687 said... just ventilate and take a break if you need it.
I painted the baby's room with DH using low odor and no-VOC paint. I've also been helping out with outdoor painting and I wear a high quality organic vapours mask from 3M.
I asked my OB. She said with good ventilation it’s fine. Take plenty of breaks. Drink lots of water ( it she says that for everything. I think she just wants me to hydrate more lol)
Anyone else have a super low number after the 1 hour glucose test? According to MyChart mine was 70. That's a fasting number. I'm wondering if my sample got messed up? (not sure how since I only got one blood draw...) I'll probably call them Monday but wondered if anyone else had seen that.
@nothingbuttherain I haven’t during pregnancy but during a routine blood work up my number was very low, like 48. I ended up doing a 5hr test bc I would have frequent dizzy spells. My numbers over the 5 hours were ok. If you’re seeing stars when you get up too fast or start shaking between meals you may need to add in smaller snacks through the day. That helped me a lot.
@nothingbuttherain mine are high on the tests, but I have GD. Mine routinely run in the 70s after meals though. My doc is fine with that. I don’t experience low BS symptoms until like 50s, maybe low 60s.
Small protein packed snacks are helpful in avoiding that.
Hello, This is not related to the glucose values, but just wanted to add my comment/experience with the 1hr glucose test. I was not fasting and instructions were to eat breakfast as always. I think they said avoid loading on carbs, but I was so hungry I ate a slice of bread with cream cheese about 40minutes before the appointment. When I arrived, they gave me the drink and had to finish it within 5 minutes or so.
@holly321 70 is a normal fasting glucose level however this test should have been 1-hr postprandial which is usually higher. Below 70 you can start getting symptoms of hypoglycemia and if you get too low you can have trouble thinking or even trouble with getting enough glucose to your organs for normal function. My concern was that if my 1-hr is 70, does that mean I'm regularly getting lower then that, and could it have a negative effect on baby? I checked with my office and they said it's low but nothing to be super concerned about, though.
I've seen a few people refer to themselves as being of Advanced Maternal Age (AMA) and I'm just curious what age the cut off is with your OB and if you've been getting additional monitoring? I'm 37 and fully expected to be considered "geriateic" and have additional appointments and screening. But my doctor said they don't do anything differently until a woman is 40 or over, and no one throughout my care has ever referred to me as AMA. I'm just curious about this. I do live in an urban area where it's common to have a baby later, but one would think these standards would be more universal and based on statistics rather than the norms of a particular city.
@blueskychicago12 AMA is usually anyone over 35. I’m 40 (will be 41 at delivery) and I’m getting growth ultrasounds every 4 weeks starting at 28 weeks and weekly non-stress tests beginning at 34 weeks.
I turned 35 2 weeks before DD was born, and didn’t receive any additional screening during that pregnancy.
@blueskychicago12 I’m 38, and the only additional test I feel I’ve gotten was that DNA testing at the beginning, which a lot of people got to take. I’m also in a more big city area, and a lot of moms in this area are as old or older than me. I agree, shouldn’t it be a set medical standard? I don’t think I’ve even had my urine checked yet this pregnancy...
@blueskychicago12 my doc is 35 for AMA as mandated by insurance. She hates it and was over 36 when two of her kids were born. I will get additional monitoring but it’s hard to say if I would have without all my other risks. I think when we first talked she said additional monitoring at the end and the genetic testing (which I declined).
@blueskychicago12 I'm also 37 and considered AMA and all I have done different so far is the DNA genetic testing way back in wk 12. My midwife said I'm healthier than most of her pregnant patients under 35 so no need to change anything.
FTM here, and I seem to have a plugged milk duct. It was red and very painful and warm to the touch. Most of the solutions I saw on dealing with it involved things with breastfeeding, but I don’t have a baby yet! So I’ve been massaging it in warm showers, and the pain has gone down a lot. But it’s still noticeably red and a little sore. Anyone have any tips as to other things I should try? Also, anything I can do to prevent this from happening again would be greatly appreciated.
Hi, I have a question about strollers. Specifically, the UPPA Vista stroller. Does anyone have it? I will definitely purchase it, but what color to pick? On forums I saw women say that kids are messy so lighter colors are not good and that many people with VISTA have nasty strollers..so black it is? But then I really like the silver color. After googling cleaning videos Im thinking that I could go with all silver as canopy, seat fabric and basket can detach. However, I don't want to be washing the fabrics monthly, because it seems like a lot of work. What is your opinion or experience?
@pennyandzooey Ive never heard of a plugged milk duct before nursing but I guess it’s possible... maybe let your OB know about it in case it’s something else? But in the meantime, there are supplements like sunflower lecithin that are supposed to help prevent blockages. I’m not sure if they’re safe during pregnancy or not. Also apparently using a vibrator on the blockage for a few minutes is supposed to help break up blockages.
@sjai59 we have a light blue/teal coloured City Select stroller which is very similar to the VISTA. We haven’t had any issues with needing to clean it, but our son wasn’t ever really a spitter or anything and we’ve been using a wagon instead of a stroller since he was about 20 months old. The main issue we’ve had with the colour is that we planned to get a second seat and they’ve discontinued the colour we bought in the past 2 years. I’m hoping by the time this baby is out of the bucket seat attachment, my son will just use the toddler ride-along board.
@CapricaAndrea That's great!! Thank you so much for sharing your experience, it's soo helpful to hear from someone who has a light color stroller. Yeah, the color issue for the second kid sounds like a (expensive) problem. Let's hope Uppa doesn't change their colors for vista!
@pennyandzooey I also have one and had one last pregnancy as well. I don’t have as any different advice just wanted you to know you’re not alone, it’s not unheard of, and no reason to freak out. Of course let your ob know but other than being annoying they shouldn’t cause problems 😉
I feel so embarrassed to ask this as I feel it is such a weird and stupid question...but assuming your milk doesn't come in for a few days after birth or breastfeeding is just not happening for you, what should we purchase for newborn formula? I am clueless and im starting to worry about being prepared.
I guess also, I'm just wondering if we could do a thread where our STM and TTM's give us all a "Newborn Prep" thread or something? What would be your "must - haves" and "preparation" ideas for us all. Could be useful?
@ktmaesim every baby is different with formula from what I understand. I plan on having little journey infant formula at home along with samples of other brands in case the little journey infant formula isn't a good fit. We plan to primarily and possibly exclusively formula feed. Even for moms who don't plan on doing that I've read multiple places it's a good idea to have some on hand just in case you have any issues whatsoever with breastfeeding.
@bookworm982 I guess another part I was worried about is: are there actual types of formula FOR newborns, or is the formula you always see at the store the one they can drink from birth -- to however long they want/need.
@ktmaesim I'm pretty sure it's flexible as to age they can drink it. Some brands say "toddler" on them, but it's really easy to spot ones that say "infant" as well. Some don't specify which would mean it's ok at any age. So to be extra safe just buy a brand that says "infant".
Re: QUESTION Thread
My doctor does also just look at color for hydration. I’ve gotten lectures before...whoops
