Early scan

Hi all!

I've got an early scan booked for Saturday and on the email they've sent me it says to come in with a full bladder. I know for a fact it will be an internal scan due to being so early in the pregnancy is there even a point in loading up on water?
Did anyone have an early scan done and actually have them do an abdominal scan?

I'm 7 weeks on Sunday so will be 6w6d at the scan.

They need a full bladder, because they do do an external scan! The full bladder makes things "move around" for the tech to see what they need. Then you will be asked to pee. Then if an internal is needed, they will do it.  Just follow your doctors directions!
  • I would come in with a full bladder. They need a urine sample anyway, so worst case you’re ready for that.

Why wouldnt she follow the orders given to her by the office, so it's not a "worst case." Its because they do an external scan prior to an internal scan.  There are reasons WHY they ask you to do things.
  • If they ask you to, I'd do it. They told me to have a full bladder for the anatomy scan with my second even though with my first, they didn't say anything on the phone, and then both the receptionist and the tech asked if I needed to use the bathroom before we started. This was the same practice, by the way. And I had an abdominal dating scan with my first (didn't have one with my second) and they were easily able to see what they needed.

So while I don't think it's truly necessary, I'd still do it if they asked.
  • @harpseal135 My instructions for my first ultrasound included the same. It was only a transvaginal ultrasound. No external ultrasound. They had me pee in a cup before they started. Sometimes the instructions aren’t right, but it’s not a big deal to follow them anyway.
