Glucose Challenge

Re: Glucose Challenge

  • @ABabyMarshall I would think you
wouldve heard by now too. I’d call the office.

    My 3 hour
is scheduled for this Wednesday and I’ll be glad to get that behind me.
  • Loading the player...
  • Mine let me know next business day about the one hour and said I'd probably know tmrw about the 3 hour.
  • @ABabyMarshall did they give you any info? I would have thought you would have heard by close of business today or they are doing the "if you dont hear from us you are fine" nonsense.
  • Drank the drink and got poked this morning. Now to just patiently wait on results. I'm also curious to find out if anemic.
  • Also, this might sound terrible but last night my husband cheered me up when I was feeling anxious with YouTube videos of Wilford Brimley saying diabee-tus.
  • @runningfortwo81 MH always makes the same Wilford Brimley diabee-tus accent LOL! So glad you passed!!

    @purplefan1 good luck today!!

  • Had my 1-hr test this week. Doctor’s office called with results this morning. My number was on the high end of normal but within the normal range. He wants me to do the 3-hr test... 🙄. I asked the person who called if there was anything else I could do. It’s an hour drive there, 3 hours for the test and an hour drive back. That’s a five hour day! We homeschool so the kids would miss a whole day of school. If my number is normal, why would he want the 3-hr? What would you do? He’s not in the office today so she will leave message for him and they’ll get back to me.
  • @Pintobean39 you could ask them if they will hook you up with a glucose meter and some guidelines and you could test at home for a couple weeks. It might be that they are concerned that your number was close enough to the cut off that if they tested again in a week or two that it would have failed. The reason they do the challenge between 24-28 weeks is because thats when the peak changes in how the placenta signals insulin occurs. So they might want to make sure they arent missing anything or under diagnosing. Ive known a few women who passed their initial test but suspected GD once the baby came and wished they had tested again a few weeks later in the pregnancy to double check. The glucose meter and checking at home might be something they would be up for and if those numbers are wonky then bring you in for the 3 hour.
  • My test is this at 10:30. Since it’s only 7:24, I’m drinking my morning coffee but skipping breakfast because I have zero low carb options. I wouldn’t be drinking the coffee but I need something on my stomach.
  • @emeraldcity1214 -  Good luck today! I just got back from taking mine.  So now I am the purgatory of waiting and having fingers and toes crossed.

@pintobean77 - I've never heard of that but I wish you luck if you have to do it.

My blood draw tech said I looked big for 28 weeks. *eye roll* She works with pregnant women all day you think that kind of comment wouldn't happen in the OB office!  That being said she was very nice otherwise so I like her but that comment gets me nervous.
  • @Dancer688 I’m pretty sensitive about the size comments too. Mainly because I’m worried about GD.
  • I finished my 3 hour today. They gave me a room which was nice to lay down.

What was not nice is getting a call from DS daycare that he swallowed a bobby pin (which we put in his hair because he insists it and it keeps his hair out of his face) we've never, ever had issues with him taking it out and putting in his mouth and he's worn them for 1.5-2 years.... So we had to make our first ER trip as well today, he is fine and we just need to wait for it to pass. We were just concerned about the length of it being able to pass through. It's been a rough morning to say the least.

Just found out I have to do the 3 hour test. My glucose was 146, so I feel like I was at least close? Haha. Still, not looking forward to being poked 4 times tomorrow morning.

Also, I failed the one hour while fasting. Any thoughts on if I'm more likely to fail the three hour as well?
  • Just found out that I failed my 3 hour
  • @Dancer688 that comment would infuriate me. Like you said, she works with pregnant women all day, she should know better.
  • @bmmims I’m so sorry about the test!
  • @bmmims sorry about the results!
  • I passed the 2 hour test and to be honest, Im not sure how to wrap my head around it. I have been prepared to fail and prepared for all of the stuff that comes with GD. So to not have it this time around, Im actually left feeling a little anxious over it. I had so much comfort in the advanced screening, monitoring, and checking. I truly credit my ongoing testing/NSTs with keeping my now 3 year old safe. And I have a hard time believing I passed, so now I worry the results were wrong. Ugh. I am NOT saying I was hoping to have it and I know what a stress GD can be and that it can be dangerous. I just was prepared for it and it will take me some time to accept that I DONT have it (or trust that the results werent wrong).

Im sorry to any momma's with GD that this might come across as ridiculous to. I truly dont wish it on anyone because of how stressful it is and exhausting it is to monitor the whole remainder of the pregnancy.
  • @purplefan1 I feel the exact same way. I was so shocked, excited, and relieved that I passed the 3hr this time when I got my results. But once the initial shock wore off, I've been so nervous about developing GD later on in this pregnancy and not knowing. I've stuck to my low carb eating, but a bit loosely here and there. My OB reassured me that they would notice if ketones start showing up in my urine samples and would catch it if that happened, but I'm still nervous about it.

  • @gumby22c yes! Thank you! I feel awful worrying about something that is a positive, but Im afraid of the same thing-it will still develop and go undiagnosed and baby will suffer. I agree Im going to still aim for a lower carb diet the rest of pregnancy and just made out my shopping list for the next week with that in mind.

@purplefan1 totally understand! I was even afraid that my OB would make me take the 1 or 3 hr test again later on since I passed it so early (19 weeks). But she said no I wouldnt have to. Then I got worried and sorta wanted take it again because I'm afraid of developing it still. I cant win and just enjoy it 🤦‍♀️

  • @gumby22c and @purplefan1 I think your reaction is totally understandable! I am glad for you that you passed, but I get it.  Every pregnancy is different, this placenta isn't giving you as much grief. It isn't uncommon to have it one pregnancy and not the other.  If you are worried about a false-negative why not get a meter and periodically check in on your glucose fir a day or two?  You can get the meter and strips over the counter and there are some well rated inexpensive meters.  If it gives you piece of mind to check in, it could be worth it.

@drama_llama I still have my meter from last time and new supplies. I had planned to keep checking my numbers, but after my meter gave me such huge varying numbers when I checked along during my 3 hr test I dont trust it as much now. But it's there if I want to check.

  • I have my old meter as well but it isnt calibrated. I did the same as @gumby22c and my numbers were wildly different than the blood draw levels at the 2 hour I did. However, I do use it periodically still. I guess since it was rating my sugar levels as consistently higher than the blood draw that as long as the number on the meter is lower than the cut off number I should take that as a good sign.
  • My old meter gave crazy numbers too.  I bought a cheapie off Amazon before my official diagnosis.  Like $40 for the meter, Lancers, and a month worth of strips. It is pretty accurate.

I had the 1-hour on Thursday and just got my results on the Quest app - my number was 137. Quest puts the cutoff at 135, but Mayo Clinic says 140, so I’m thinking it’s “high,” but not officially GD? I’m going to assume I have to do the 3-hour. I’ll see my doctor on Thursday. My last pregnancy my number was 128. I’m also slightly anemic (low red cell count and low hemoglobin), which I haven’t dealt with before.

Edited to add that my fasting number was 94 (“normal” is 65-99), and it was 76 with my last pregnancy. I did binge eat the everliving f out of everything before midnight before the test though. Like, from 11-12 I just shoveled food in. So maybe that made my numbers higher.

  • @JBos82 every practice has their own cut off points, so you will have to wait and see.  The 1-hour is considered a screening not diagnostic, so you really can't tell yet.  "Normal" numbers are also different in pregnancy.  For instance, while anything under 99 is normal fasting outside of pregnancy, for my OB the cut-off for elevated fasting is anything over 91.  I do get the impression my OB uses strict numbers and I might not even have been diagnosed at another practice.

As long as you fasted for the appropriate 8 - 10 hours it shouldn't matter what you ate the night before.  Good luck!
  • Thanks @drama_llama!! I just feel
clueless. I searched through my fb messages to one of my mom friends this afternoon and saw that with my last pregnancy my doc considered 128 to be “borderline.” I totally forgot about that. They had me come in first thing in the morning, get a lancet reading, go home and have breakfast and then come back for a second reading two hours later. Whatever those numbers were must have been fine because that was the end of it. I just want it to be Thursday so I can stop worrying lol!

@gumby22c @purplefan1 Sorry I am coming into the conversation a little late, but I can relate a little to the worry that you two are experiencing. I actually came in here to ask the following:

**How many of you (everyone reading this thread) took your glucose test in the late afternoon or evening?**

I'm worried because I was supposed to take my glucose test at 10:15am. I fasted at night (although I was told it wasn't *necessary*) for over 8 hours and was close to heading out the door to my appointment when I got a call that my OB had to go do a delivery, and the scheduling lady bumped my appointment to 3:30 or so (my blood draw was around 4:30pm, I think). 😐 I had fasted for over 8 hours leading up to my anticipated 10:15am appointment, so when she called me to tell me to come later, in the afternoon, I was at a loss for what to do. I was told I could eat, but I felt so conflicted about how to manage food during the day that I ended up eating very little, my diet was horrible, and I felt a little ill as a result.

I took the test and two days later my doctor said I passed, so I didn't think much of it until just this morning when I read your GT comments about your results and I went to see what my actual level was. It was 131. 😟 The chart says 135+ is the elevated range. So now I am wondering, with how close my results were, if they were accurate. I feel it was unfair of them to switch my test to later in the day (couldn't another doctor just as easily have handed me the bottle of syrup liquid???) and I worry that it set me up for inaccurate results (which way, I'm not sure) and now I'm left wondering if I actually do have GD or not. 😔 Am I really in the clear? I don't want to have to worry about this the rest of the pregnancy. (And if I ask for a 2nd test, I have a feeling that insurance won't cover it; and if that is the case, that feels really unfair to me.) 😖
  • @SunnySkiesToday was this the 1 hour test? If you passed the 1 hour test while also eating, I dont think you have anything to worry about! Some practices recommend fasting before that test, others dont. It does feel sucky that they bounced you to the end of the day. My doc doesnt even do the glucose testing, his nurse and team do the whole thing. But honestly, a pass of the 1 hour is good at this point in pregnancy and you should be good. If it makes you feel better to do something, just try reducing your carbs overall. But every pregnant person has some degree of insulin resistance and so passing your test on the higher end of the cut up is still ok.

You can always double check with your doc at your next appointment and see if they will say anything that feels relieving.
  • @purplefan1 Thank you for the question/clarification--I knew I was leaving a detail out! Yes, it was the 1-hour test. :)
And thank you for the reassurance!

I may ask the OB at my appointment coming up in an hour, but this also just so happens to be my first appointment with a different OB in the office (to meet the other people that could possibly deliver my baby if my OB isn't available). I suppose he should know, too, though, so it shouldn't matter that he isnt my regular OB. 🙂

@SunnySkiesToday For my last pregnancy I only passed the 1 hour by 1 point and my baby's belly was measuring pretty large in comparison to the rest of her body so my dr was a little concerned. Instead of taking the 3 hour though, they just had me adjust my diet (I was really only craving sweets with her though). They had me focus on complex carbs and try to cut back on sweets and simple carbs. So I think you should be good, but I would bring it up at your next appointment to get their thoughts. Also, she came out perfectly proportional so I don't think the measuring was the most accurate  :/
