@ktmaesim it’s a no for me. I’m gluten free so I don’t drink beer and I absolutely despise red wine, and my go to drink is vodka club which I absolutely am not having now lol. If this baby was due after Christmas I probably would have a toast of Champagne as my grandfather brings the best champagne every year, but lucky for me this baby will for sure be here before then.

  • @ktmaesim I have not had alcohol and don’t necessarily plan to, but don’t think a drink here and there is necessarily an issue.
  • @ktmaesim My husband and I like to try and collect wines, and I'm not holding him back from doing so during this pregnancy (though he has offered in solidarity). So, he has brought some wine into the house and I've had a few sips here and there to try with him, but haven't had anything beyond that. The last glass I had was the night before I found out I was pregnant. That's pretty much how I'm approaching it. I don't think there's anything wrong with a little occasionally, and I'm personally not comfortable with having much more than that, but I'm also not going to judge if anyone wants to have a full glass--we each need to do what's best for us. But yes, too much is an issue.
  • @anniemarie887 I was thinking the same thing with FFFC. I haven't had anything to drink this pregnancy other than a sip of my husbands beer because he wanted me to try it (it was a new beer), but with my daughter I had a couple small glasses of wine. I'm not opposed to a little bit now and again as long as it is done responsibly and not excessively. And I'm also not going to judge those that say none at all as that's where they're comfort level is.

I too have had few “sips” or even just a “kiss” of the beer or cocktail just to try when my husband orders one - we like to go out and drink (obvi not any more) but I don’t think I’ll have an entire gulp or full glass this pregnancy! Just interested in hearing you guys’ thoughts on it! To each their own :-)

  • You do what you’re comfortable with. I’ve had friends who have totally abstained from alcohol and others who have had some.
  • I probably won't have any drinks during pregnancy out of an abundance of caution, but I wouldn't judge those who have a glass here or there.  I'm a little unclear on the rules while breastfeeding.  Are we supposed to abstain completely?  I'm hoping not.
  • I would love a cold beer! Heineken makes a nonalcoholic beer that tastes pretty good, I’ve had a few of those but no real beer. I plan on breast feeding but as soon as I get home with baby I plan on enjoying one. They say dark beer increases your supply so 🤷🏼‍♀️
  • @blueskychicago12 I read up on it and it seemed that a couple of drinks were fine if you had a bit of time between feedings. I think I also read that your breast milk was fine to give baby unless you reached the point where you would be considered too impaired to drive.
  • I haven’t had anything to drink since finding out. But honestly with both DS and this pregnancy they were a bit unexpected (not unplanned but unexpected). In both cases I had a night out shortly before finding out I was pregnant. Two or three drinks. But in general, no I won’t drink. My husband is basically sober (a glass of wine once in awhile.). So there is rarely alcohol in the house. And the judgment that comes from ordering it when out and visibly pregnant makes it not even worth worrying about the actual safety of it.

  • @ktmaesim Pissed off a bunch of pregnant lushes 😂
  • My best friend’s SIL just had a baby and she was born with a cleft lip. The SIL would often have beer and wine during the pregnancy (never to the point of getting hammered) so my friend thinks that is why the baby was born with the defect. They say cleft lips can be from genetics (neither parent has history of that in their families) or a result of toxins such as drugs or alcohol.
  • @k_mama91 that's excellent news on the breastfeeding front.  I did a little reading and found similar info.  Even the CDC and pediatrics association seem to agree that occasional, light drinking is safe while breastfeeding as long as you allow a little time to let the alcohol leave your bloodstream before nursing.

The face should be together by end of 1st trimester,  it's stuff like this why they stress drinking is even more important to avoid during that period.

I might have a glass of wine or beer as the pregnancy continues,  I haven't up till now.  I don't think it's worth stressing over at this point.
  • Today's random includes a picture, and if anyone can explain the science behind this, it would be appreciated, because I'm weirded out.

A few minutes ago I was literally just sitting on the couch reading, and I had a glass of lemonade on the end table next to me. I hear a small cracking sound, and look around, trying to figure out what it was. I then decide to take a drink of my lemonade, and the bottom of the glass just FALLS OFF, spilling lemonade everywhere.

The ice had melted probably like 15 minutes prior. Temp of the glass wasn't too cold, room temp is currently 72. I hadn't hit the glass, it hadn't been jostled or knocked in any way. Now, it is from a set that's around 10 years old, so maybe the age had to do with it. But it just did a clean break without any obvious reason, just sitting there, untouched, out of the blue. Not even shards...just the bottom fell off completely.

Photo below. So freaking random and weird.

  • @rjgmcmanus I have had something similar happen to me before, with a clean break, but I had bumped the glass, got a drink and a while after drinking, I picked it up and the bottom just detached.

on a similar random note, I drove to my parents for lunch, they live about 2 miles away, I realized I forgot the beef I had marinated for kabobs and when I got in my car, my wind shield was cracked.  I had drive an old back road to stop by a produce stand, so I guess it was hit by a rock.

@rjgmcmanus Whoa! I know you said the glass wasn't too cold, but was it warm/hot when you put ice into it? At the restaurant I used to work at, we had to be careful not to put ice cold drinks into cups that had just been through the sanitizer--the ice in the hot would shock the glass and they'd crack. Not that I've ever seen the bottom just fall off like that before!  :o

ETA: @holly321 That sucks!! I was driving home from visiting my family several states away, and I was only an hour from home when a piece of rock hit my windshield and cracked it, too. :( Looks like I'll need to replace the windshield, which really sucks, since I've already replaced it once on this car a couple years ago. (Our insurance doesn't cover it, either, so it's pretty expensive!) Is it cracked all the way, or just chipped? If it's not cracked, maybe you can just get the spot filled!
  • @ninrms it is cracked,  I starts at the bottom or the passengers side and is now about half way over.  I am pretty sure the crack has grown bigger since I first noticed it.  fortunately, it is covered by insurance.
  • @ninrms Nope--just pulled it from the cabinet. Room temp. The only thing I can think is because it was an older glass and had been through the dishwasher God knows how many times over the years, it just kind of gave out. It was the weirdest thing.
  • I've had some non-alcoholic beer at BBQs and restaurants and have been comfortable with that. I actually went with friends to a cidery yesterday and while I didn't have any samples, I did taste a couple of them. But I avoided tasting any that had certain herbs in them (these were some really interestingly brewed ciders).

One of my main concerns in alcoholic beverages is herbs that might be in them (wormwood, gentian, and other bittering herbs are not safe for pregnant women) - similar to how I feel so wary about drinking many herbal teas.

In regards to alcohol I have read Expecting Better by Emily Oster and appreciate the presentation of the studies and research.  But combined with my preferences, I doubt I myself will be having any alcoholic beverages. If I did, it would probably be a small glass of beer or wine.

Oster's bottom line for those who haven't read it:
There is no good evidence that light drinking during pregnancy negatively impacts your baby. This means: Up to 1 drink a day in the second and third trimesters. 1 to 2 drinks a week in the first trimester. Speed matters: no vodka shots!
Heavier drinking has negative impacts, especially in the range of 4 or 5 drinks at a time. This should be avoided.
  • @jandawg the paperwork from my doctors office said similar.  Essentially mild alcohol consumption probably poses no risk, but to avoid it.

my concerns too are some additives. I love gin, but juniper is not good for pregnancy.  I am not sure if there would be any harmful effect, but I would rather not.  And as much as I enjoy drinking, I generally get drunk way too easily, which seems like i would be asking for trouble.

@jandawg Ooh--I have a fabulous list of herbs that I was given at my doctor's office! Four pages of different herbs/teas and how they relate to or affect pregnancy (or not). Are you interested in seeing that? I could post it here if you are!
  • @ninrms I would LOVE to see that list!!
  • @ninrms yes please!!
  • I just caught 2 of my cats, on my counter, eating my muffins through plastic wrap.
This one doesn’t even let Dh and me pet him, so he has some nerve.

  • Thanks for this list @ninrms!
