June Appointments

Re: June Appointments

  • @kbrown2385 so frustrating! 1 day feels like forever.

  • My first appt isn't until next Tuesday (I'll be just under 10 weeks) and I've spent the last two days stressing out that it's twins. Lol. I seriously need to chill, because I don't need this eating at me for 6 more days!

  • My first OB appointment is coming up on Thursday. I’ve read a lot online but I’m still not sure what to expect. I’m worried- mostly about whether or not they’ll do a pap (every experience I’ve had with one has been extremely painful) and/or an ultrasound (I’ll be eight weeks and though my anxiety has calmed a bit I want to know that everything is in the right place and on track). I’m going out of town next week and also for two weeks in the middle of July which will make scheduling my next appointment kind of tricky so I hope to get as much done this week as possible.
  • @daydreaminghufflepuff I think it's standard to do an ultrasound at the first appointment. From there, mine does a urine sample and blood draw. Some of it is to check for any issues, get your blood type confirmed, and part is a full drug screening. They answer any questions, tell you about testing options, and then schedule the next appointment. For mine, it's at 12 weeks unless you do the NIPT test

  • @persnickity Thank you for sharing! I can definitely handle urine and as much blood as they’ll want. I’m relieved to hear that an ultrasound is pretty standard. I’m not sure about the NIPT... I don’t believe I have any risk factors but wouldn’t mind them taking more blood if they feel it’s a good idea. What I don’t want is the invasive needle test (I can’t recall the name).
  • @daydreaminghufflepuff I think the more invasive one is the amnocentesis.
  • @daydreaminghufflepuff what everyone else said. At mine, they  a also did  a pelvice but not a pap since I had one recently.
  • At mine (last pregnancy) they did an ultrasound and a pap (because I was due for one). Otherwise we just discussed the next however many months and what to expect. I didnt do bloodwork or a urine sample because they have you go and do it beforehand at the lab.
  • Finally got my referral to an ob and scheduled my appt. I go for new patient and bloodwork on Monday. I’ve heard good things about the practice, so I’m looking forward to get started with them.

  • @MrsJessS - Yay! I'm so happy for you!
  • @stashattack - Wow, that sounds really cool! Is your practice affiliated with a research facility, or was this just kind of random?
  • @marebear15 I'm going to Penn Medicine. So definitely tons of research happening there. :)

  • @stashattack I was going to be apart of a research study after DS was born. I think it was testing different pain medications? But then I had a really long labor and was a complete disaster after so my husband and I decided it was best to back out and just take the medication that they normally prescribe. I'm all for being a part of studies though! How else will modern medicine move forward!
  • @dumbledoredies exactly. My husband is totally geeking out being a researcher himself. He's also going to talk to his dad about it (because the apple doesn't fall far from the tree) too. Here I am excited for it but more geeking out that it's baby's first science experiment :D

  • We did a few language studies with my son as a baby. It was so fun! They played him video clips and tracked his eyes for reactions.
  • I had my intake apt yesterday.  They couldn't find the HB on doppler because I'm only 9-10 weeks so I am going back in 2 weeks. I refused early ultrasounds because I get bleeding after them that sends me into a panic...I found the HB on my own doppler and clocked it at 171.
  • @justsuzie how frustrating! You would think they would be the experts on finding the heartbeat. Is it possible to do an abdominal ultrasound to avoid the bleeding? I totally get the panic but they found baby with an abdominal ultrasound when I was only 8w!
  • The found my baby’s heartbeat at 9w4 on the ultrasound. And I had an abdominal one as well. Which I’m glad cuz grooming certain area have become non existent cuz I just can’t be bothered right now 🤣

  • tw- prior loss mentioned

@dumbledoredies I didn't even think about abdominal because they didn't offer it.  I had an anterior placenta last pregnancy so maybe I do again this time?  Also, I have serious ultrasound phobia because of my losses.  I had to go biweekly to measure progress and literally saw the heartbeat get slower and slower each US.
  • @Xstatic3333 I'll be sending all my good vibes your way tomorrow.  I hope you have an a.m. apt! I hate waiting all day.
  • @Xstatic3333 I hope everything goes well today! I have my 12 week appointment tomorrow (& possibly an additional on wed for a multiples clinic but not sure yet).
  • @justsuzie I had an anterior placenta last time too. Hoping it isnt anterior this time!

    @Xstatic3333 good luck today!
  • @Xstatic3333 did you have a scan today too?
  • OB intake and bloodwork went well. I’m dehydrated so definitely need to increase my water intake. Scheduled my NIPT draw for next Wednesday and my next scan will be the 19th.

I had my first appointment today, and it was the worst. I will definitely be getting a new doc. Super quick US but she said “the baby is healthy there’s the heartbeat” but that was it. She didn’t rush any other part of the appointment - just the US - and spent plenty of time giving me loads of unsolicited guidance.  She also told me that my uterus expands as the pregnancy progresses. This is my fourth child. I would hope I know that by now.
I’m grateful that there is a heartbeat and look forward to a follow up appointment with my new doctor.

Edited to add: the practitioner used one measurement to date. In my previous experience my docs have always taken a few measurements to do so. Has this been others experience as well?
  • @jamidine I think mine has always done multiple. Atleast 2 measurements because I think she measures both the sac and the baby. I'm sorry you had such a crappy experience with the doctor! I hope your new doctor is better <3
  • @jamidine Yep, the ultrasound techs at the practice I go to always take a bunch of measurements. Glad you're changing doctors to someone you'll hopefully be happier with
  • Had my first OB appointment today. I LOVE my OB! So kind and positive. Just got a routine exam but she did the doppler and found baby's heartbeat right away! Clocked at 170bpm 😍 scheduled next ultrasound for July 10th, can't wait!
  • Had my 12 week appt this morning and finally heard baby's heartbeat which was in the 150s.  They want me to do a 24 hour urine collection since I had pre-eclampsia last pregnancy, which puts me at higher risk to get it again, so they want to start monitoring early.  She said no ultrasounds until 20 week anatomy scan or unless medically necessary (like if I get preeclampsia).
  • I had a second 12 week appointment on wednesday afternoon. This time for a twin clinic. Both babies still measuring a few days ahead & heartrates around 160.
i came away from the appointment quite upset though as I has quite a traumatic birth with dd & it brought up a lot of stuff that I clearly hadnt dealt with & I found the consultant to be quite dismissive & didnt listen to my concerns and fears. On top of that the whole twin thing kinda hit me hard & I spent the majority of the evening in floods of tears.
My husband, mum & previous bmb were all really great & talked me off the ledge & im feeling much better about everything now.
  • @leprechaunlady I'm sorry your consultant was so dismissive about your concerns. Are you able to request someone else for the nect appointment? Also, I'm sorry to hear you had a traumatic birthing experience. But, since every pregnancy is different, iI would imagine, so is the birthing experience. Threes this Australian youtuber I watch that recently discussed how her first birth was traumatic and so she planned a healing birthing experience with a midwife for her 2nd and how different and amazing it was. She talks about it in great length if it's something you'd be interested in I'll send you the link. Anyway regarding twins, my SiL who is a laboring nurse says that nothing twins isn't really any different from birthing a singleton. Try not to worry, you got this! I'm glad you have a good support system with your family and previous bmb. And we're here too! ❤
  • @peppyj9 id definitely be interested if you dont mind sending me the link! although i wont be able to do a midwife led birth due to previous gd & being multiples this time, so am definitely consultant led but id love to see someone elses take on things!
