Product Spotlight: Car Seats

Stolen from April 2019:
Give us the pros and cons of what you have, or ask about what you want. Are you starting with a bucket or convertible? Do you care about weight limits (low or high)? Or the weight of the seat itself? Can you fit three across? Does it fit in your car? Does it fit into your stroller? How can you even tell about stroller compatibility? Where do you look for safety info? Is there other relevant info?

FTMs: when you look at car seats, what’s confusing? Ask away!

  • I want to try a convertible seat, but I also like the convenience of an infant seat for transitioning the kid from the car to the house until he or she is older. Is this a waste of money? I feel like it's a lot easier to carry the infant seat between the two while the baby is still small.

P.S. I come from an older family and had to fight the urge to call it a pumpkin seat, because I just realized that an infant seat and a pumpkin seat are different. 😮

@galentine I have never heard it specifically called a rapid remove cover, but I agree, you'll want to be able to remove the fabric part of the car seat. Basically all infant car seat carriers are made this way though. Babies have blowouts!

Okay, thanks @junebabyh. So I should look for a carseat where the fabric part is easily removed?

@junebabyh explained it better! 🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️ Yes, basically the fabric in the seat will come off without you needing to undo the car seat from the car. I think Chicco makes it so they zip off. Graco uses Velcro and snaps.

Yes, ours was removable, but a pain in the ass to actually remove it. It was secured very well that's why so that the fabric didn't slip and slide, which I get.

If you go to Target or any other store that has floor models, you can probably see how they're fastened to the actual car seat.

We used the seat that came with the graco click stroller set. It transitioned to toddler pretty easy. Unfortunately our daughter is very tall so she outgrew it very fast. We moved to a bigger one a little before 2 actually.

No, not snark! I think rapid remove may be specifically graco’s terminology for it 🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️

Basically, I can remove the need to be washed portion of the seat without uninstalling the car seat from the car

Yep! But truly, almost every infant car seat I have come across will have a removable fabric cover. There is also an infant insert, which they need when they are very, very teeny and kind of helps keep their head and body centered (but you can take it out for good after several months). Anyway, that insert should also easily remove b/c they sit directly on it so it's likely to get the first hit in a blowout situation. Graco SnugRide, Chicco, PegPerego, MaxiCosi...all popular, well ranked infant car seat brands where i am sure the fabric part is removable. PS. The infant insert should come with the infant car seat, no need to buy seperately.

I can’t highlight on mobile, but yes, every seat comes with an infant insert. The ones sold separately are actually a no-no unless they are designed specifically for your seat. They’ll say “for all seats,” but the car seat manufacturer has that say, and it can void your warranty and the safety of the car seat

  • We used the Chicco keyfit for a bucket seat and switched to a rear facing convertible (Chicco nextfit, I think) around 1 year. I loved the keyfit and highly recommend a bucket seat for infants. They fall asleep in cars so often and it’s nice to be able to just take out the seat and stick it in a stroller without waking them. Also - strapping a kid into a rear facing seat in the car is a huge pain IMO. It’s much easier to make sure a baby is correctly positioned and nice and snugly buckled in if you’re inside your house instead of cramped in the backseat of a car.

i don’t love the Chicco Nextfit. For some reason it’s really hard to pull the strap to tighten it, and I ended up with a weird forearm injury from pulling so hard to get the straps right. It was really easy to install though.

Another note - in many places, fire stations will do free car seat installations and inspections.  I highly recommend doing that, especially for your first seat. Lots of people install car seats incorrectly (eg not tight enough) and have no idea. Our fire station also showed us how to properly buckle in a baby using a doll. A lot of people make mistakes with buckling, too.

  • Like @cmbt2 said the infant inserts must be manufacturer per seat. If you have a small baby or premmie they hospital's often require at CarSeat test to make sure they fit properly and if the insert is not specific for that car seat they will not let you use it.

For those getting infant seats- make sure you read the manual on how to fit an itty bitty baby in the seat. You may need to adjust the clip in the back for the straps- the graco snug ride in particular needs this adjustment.

Dont be like me and standing in the hospital room googling your manual because the straps are too loose for your brand new newborn at the lowest stage and you forgot about an additional adjustment spot in the back

  • Please forgive me if this is the dumbest question in the history of the universe: Should my car seat and stroller brand be the same so that I can put the car seat in the stroller if need be? Would I ever need to do this? Like, if the baby is sleeping and I don't want to remove her from the car seat? (I ask because in the prompt I took from the April BMB it asks "Does it fit into your stroller?")
Okay, I've found a better solution: Can someone just send me their registry so that I can copy it? Kthnxbye

  • Also PSA for Target shoppers:

Target is having a car seat trade-in promotion right now: 20% off car seats and strollers, if you bring in an old carseat to recycle. As a FTM, I didn't expect to be able to take advantage of this, but my coworker happened to mention she has an old car seat she needs to get rid of, so check around with people you know! Between 20% off and an additional 5% off if you have a Target Redcard, this is a huge discount!
  • @galentine I settled on the Chico Keyfit 30 when I was researching for my registry. I actually am thinking about the entire travel system: https://smile.amazon.com/Chicco-Bravo-Travel-System-Orion/dp/B01CSECET0/ref=sr_1_7?crid=2QAYDF92LB5Y0&keywords=chicco%2Bkeyfit%2B30%2Binfant%2Bcar%2Bseat&qid=1556295150&s=gateway&sprefix=chico%2Bke%2Caps%2C174&sr=8-7&th=1

For STMs(+): Is the travel system worth it, or does it not really matter?
  • cmbt2cmbt2 member
@jenferlee82 wasn’t worth it for me. We so rarely used the stroller. I’ve used it a handful of times for each. I much preferred babywearing

  • My two cents on travel systems, they are heavy and bulky when I’ve read some standard adapters and much easier, but I don’t have experience with it so I’m still undecided. ANDPLUSALSO it’s worth considering how much you plan to wear
