  • @Panaceia I absolutely loved the Halo swivel for my first. I’m going to use it again for this little one! It’s super convenient and adjusts to the height of your bed.

I used a pack and play in our room with my first two for the first month. I started naps in the crib durring the day as soon as we got home, but kept them in our bedroom at night. Newborns wake up so frequently, it's just so much easier to have them close. I usually wait up at the first sound of fussing.

I also picked up a snuggle nest for this little one to have her in the bed. With two other kids now across the hallway, the closer the better to reduce the fussing and crying.

Both my oldest slept in their swing a lot too. My husband slept on the couch next to the swing. It was the only way my kids slept some nights, and the only place my oldest would sleep and not spit up.
  • Does anyone have any recommendations for temporary sleeping with a newborn, when traveling? We have a smaller camper and would still like to do some camping when the baby's old enough. It's not big enough for a pack n' play inside, and between us plus the dog, bed sharing probably won't work. I want to find something that will lay on the dinette that becomes a bed. Would something like this work? There's a lot on Amazon but it's a bit overwhelming

  • I'm going with a pack n play that has a bassinet on the top with the changing table, she'll sleep in that in our room until I'm comfortable moving her into her room.
  • We have the guava lotus for travelling, and will prob have it set up in the living room as LO gets bigger. For the first little bit, we intend on using the uppababy bassinet (when we purchase it) with the jolly jumper stand. A friend is also lending us the dockatot, so we will try that as well. Will move over to the crib once we feel it's time.

  • Thanks @tova24 ! I've heard good things from a few people now and I'm so excited to try it. Especially since I'll be a RCS. Getting in and out of bed with my first ECS was terrible. I'm glad to hear you had a good experience with it!
  • @samanthak46 I did this with DD (but a boat instead of a camper). If she had been younger I was looking at something just like the pic you attached. She was already 6 months old when we went though so I just rigged up one of the beds so it was safe for her and she just bed shared with me. A few times I put a safety railing on one of the bench beds and she slept there perfectly too.

First time around, we had a bassinet on wheels. It was amazing, because we kept it by the bed at night and then wheeled it around wherever we needed it during the day. That is what I want this time too!

Also... anyone else planning to share a room with their toddler AND new baby? Toddler still co-sleeps with us, and we all love it. Future us will probably hate current us for making this decision, but I'm hoping it works out? Our toddler is an extremely heavy sleeper... so maybe it can work?
  • @strickland8052 I'm planning to continue bed sharing with my 5 year old and have baby in a bassinet beside the bed...then eventually the crib. I may also regret this later on but DD is a super sound sleeper as well so I'm also hoping it works out!
  • @Panaceia thank you so much! I'll look into that. We haven't gotten our camper out of its winter storage yet so I need to see what it all looks like. I've had friends/family tell me they went camper camping with their one month old. So that is our plan - but we'll just play it by ear and see how it goes.
  • @samanthak46 I think that looks like a great option! I had this Lulyboo when DS was little and it traveled really well (I also used it at home). I liked that it had a canopy:

I was recently looking at Baby Delight sleepers as well, they have some nice travel sleepers:

I also like the Brica since it has a mesh screen that keeps bugs out:

FYI the American Academy of Pediatrics is calling for the rock n play to be recalled due to infant deaths.

  • @mama_bear19 I do not have one but it's specifically tied to misuse. You MUST buckle your child into the seat, all of the deaths are due to not buckling them in and the child flipping and being unable to breathe.
  • @mamanbebe it sounded like some of them were not tied to misuse, but instead to the position the baby was in based on the incline. I know it’s been a hot topic, but I wanted to share bc of the AAP’s stance.
  • I'm a R&P supporter/user, but we ditch it way before baby can roll over. I just looked up what I did with DD... at 2 months I transitioned her to swaddled in the crib and at 3 months we ditched the swaddle and transitioned to Merlin Magic Sleep Suit. This one will most likely follow suit.
  • Rock N Plays are banned where I am in Canada. They don't meet the Canadian safety standard. I know some people here still buy them from places online anyways and swear by them but they don't actually sell them here.

FTM here! I plan on using the Halo swivel the first few months.

I hadn't considered using a RNP at all as a bassinet until a friend of mine told me that's what she used for her daughter who initially refused to sleep anywhere else. My friend also told me that her pediatrician had ok'ed this since the back of the RNP was firm. I didn't look into it further, but after reading through this thread I'm curious as to what the argument against RNP's are.

**Edit** Okay, I take the RNP question back as I just saw an article regarding the push to recall them. Should I not be using one at all? A friend gifted us one but I’m wondering now if we should return it.
  • @mamanessen that’s up to you and your SO. I did use one with my son, but I won’t be using it for this LO. We used it under supervision mostly with my son, but I read that positional asphyxiation can happen before they can roll and even if you’re watching them so it’s just not worth the risk to me.  I wasn’t aware of safety issues and infant deaths when I was using it.
  • @mama_bear19 Oh yeah, I started the return pretty much immediately after posting that, haha. It definitely doesn’t seem worth the risks!
  • I bought a Summer Infant Co-Sleeper at the local secondhand sale ($10!). It folds in half, so the mattress feels a little wrinkled in the middle, but my thought is that baby will be long enough that it will even itself out. Should I be worried?
FWIW, I don't plan to use this in my bed because I'm a violent sleeper. We'll probably use this if we travel or are hanging out downstairs for a long time.
  • FYI Fisher Price recalled all rock n plays.
  • Ughhhh what am I going to do...
  • We used a RnP with my second. I lent it to my brother for my nephew to use after we were done with it. I recently bought one from a friend because it was an auto rock one. Looks like we won’t be using it after all!

My first just slept in the PnP and then transitioned to the crib, so I guess we will do the same for this baby.

  • Any thoughts on alternatives to the rnp to use to sit the baby in while awake? We’re not looking to have her sleep in it but have one on our registry as we were planning to use it in the living room, etc to hang out in when awake and our hands are otherwise full
  • @finnflan there are so many bouncers that would work great for that. Did we have a product spotlight thread on bouncers and swings?
  • @finnflan we used a baby bjorn bouncer that is super simple, no frills at all. It’s only for when baby is awake but I used it while i showered, cooked etc.
  • With our first baby DH and I were able to take turns with baby wake ups and feedings. With our second, we had two babies not sleeping through the night and the second was a slow weight gainer so she ate every 2 hours for the first 12 weeks. We coslept (even though I swore I'd never cosleep) bc I was so sleep deprived I thought I'd die. Plus recovering from a cs I couldn't get out of bed every 2 hours and DH was on DD1 duty. Third time around we got the RnP which I believed was a safer alternative to cosleeping. Not having that option is truly frightening to me and now I'm choosing between cosleeping and RnP which have both been warned against by AAP. It feels like a risky lose-lose situation that I didn't want to be in.
  • @cbeanz I'm sorry this is stressing you out. Does having a bassinet or pnp next to your bed work at all?

I co-slept for the first 2 weeks before moving DS to his pnp next to the bed, I honestly think as long as you're not loading your bed up with blankets and such around the baby that it's perfectly fine. In my case I kept DS on my side so my husband wouldn't roll on him. Our LC, a well-known breastfeeding/childbirth educator where we lived, was a 30+ year L&D nurse and actually recommended co-sleeping, with caution to blankets and pillows.
  • Thanks @mamanbebe
Over the years we've tried it all... the bassinet and the sleepers attached to my bed, plus every other gimmick out there. In my experience my babies want to be rocked or with me to sleep at night. Maybe the 4th one will be different and sleep Alone/Back/Crib but that was the last thing my other 3 wanted. I guess no use worrying about it ahead of time.
  • @finnflan agree with a bouncer! It's actually one of the few baby products we don't have lol but I used one at a friends house and sounds perfect for what you are looking for! You could also use a swing.
@cbeanz I know it's also questionable as far as sleep, but have you tried a dock a tot for cosleeping? That's what DS2 used and it was a life saver for making me feel comfortable with cosleeping when it was needed. Another option that I know is really expensive is the snoo. It seems kind of like a fancy/safe rock and play.
  • @finnflan I had a family member who's had 5 kids recommend the Graco Dreamglider. She loved it. I'm a FTM, so I have no personal experience with it, but it might be worth checking out.
