PAIF - new mommies - March

Once again we all forgot about starting the new months thread. ☺️

Dealing with everyone being sick with likely a mild case of the flu. Several of the kids and teachers at daycare have been diagnosed. It seems like we get lucky with timing, Mackenzie gets better just as we both get sick.

Yeah, my nieces are both down with the flu this week. We've avoided it thus far, knock on wood. TONS of flu at work though so I'm sure I'll bring home some germs at some point if this continues :-(

Anne took her first tentative step this evening! She immediately fell on her bum but it was exciting

@persnickity I'm sorry Y'all are sick. I hope everyone gets better soon.

M has to go see the GI at Children's Hospital. He is technically failure to thrive because he is not on the growth chart. However, his dr assured me he doesn't consider him that way because he has been gaining steadily. But, he is losing a lot of calories from reflux and he wants M checked out to make sure there isn't an obstruction or the like making his reflux worse. If it takes longer than a month to get in with them then we will do a barium swallow and trial of stronger meds.

@mbradfo2 There are so many people around here getting sick. But it seems a lot more mild than previous years.

@wildrainbow that's reassuring your Dr doesn't seem too concerned, but glad he's getting checked out. Hopefully you can get an appointment soon.

I think we're also going to steady potty training soon. She's been really interested in the toilet and us going potty lately. Any tips on getting started?

@ wildrainbow I’m sure u must be concerned hoping his reflux goes away soon!!! It’s so frustrating to see them in pain.

@mbradfo2 @persnickity trying hard to keep the flu away my niece is sick too and I’m afraid I’m getting the sniffles too :(

my lil one is like an octopus must touch and grab everything! She thinks she can walk too! She’s constantky pulling herself up, taking a step and then plop.  She’s not even 10 months so I’m fine with her not trying to walk everywhere!  :D

Matthew has his first ear infection at 5 months old. I'm sad we are already dealing with this, but glad he's not running a fever and we seem to have caught it pretty early. Also, thank God for pharmacies that deliver!
  • Options
@wildrainbow did your other son have frequent ear infections? We luckily seem to have avoided ear infections so far. Just mainly dealt with congestion.
  • Options
Poor Mathew! Glad it was caught early though. We’re dealing with teething over here and Abigail always spikes a fever when one is about to pop through, makes for an anxious mommy though! She’s been extra snuggly (and a bit clingy) but I’m trying to enjoy every last snuggle since she wants to be on the move now that she’s crawling
  • Options
@persnickity He did, but they didn't start until later. I'm told that really bad reflux can be a contributing factor for early infections.

@persnickity a) thanks for starting the thread (my husband has been travelling like crazy and I totally forgot) b) we bought Zoey a Fisher Price Princess Potty b/c she shows a LOT of interest. We don't plan on trying anything until after she turns 2. I don't think she's biologically ready based on diapers and daycare doesn't support until the 2-year old room (where they have toilets in the room). So if you learn anything along the way, let me know!!!

We go tomorrow on a road trip to Children's Hospital to meet with the GI. Matthew got in faster than I expected, for which I'm grateful. Hopefully we can get a good treatment plan for his reflux and he can finally make the growth chart.

@mbradfo2 I felt the same way about ds1 turning 1. I was both so sad and so happy. I likened it to a bittersweet memory, it's wonderful because he went through a lot to make it to this world, but it also meant he wasn't a baby anymore. Now, he's a cantankerous 3 year old with the attitude of a 15 year old. I really miss that sweet one year old, lol.

@wildrainbow Hope the appointment with the GI went well!!

@byrneme tried putting Makenzie on the toilet without a diaper after her nap yesterday. She didn't like it and started getting upset. Sitting on it with clothes is fine, but apparently not quite ready for naked.

Hey, y'all, I'm sorry about just now updating, it's been a rough weekend. M is for real FTT with ridiculously bad reflux, even his GI said he was refluxing too much. Once per day he is to have a bottle of breast milk supplemented with MCT oil. In a couple of weeks we are to start him a solid, some kind of veggie, and go in for a weight check with our Dr. We changed his meds from Zantac to Omeprezole. In 4 weeks we go back to the GI for a recheck and to see where we are. He had his first dose of Omeprezole this afternoon and he's sleeping. Soundly. This is the first time in so long that I have tears in my eyes. I'm just praying we can get him back on track.
  • Options
@wildrainbow I'm sorry to hear that. I'm sure the news was hard to hear. So glad that you have a solid plan moving forward. That's amazing the change in medication made such a difference so quickly!!
  • Options
@wildrainbow hugs to you, I can’t imagine being told that but it sounds like you’re working with a great team and have a good plan in place. Hopefully with getting his reflux under control he’ll start growing like a weed!

-hugs-  While I can't imagine what it's like in your position, it sounds like you guys are working on tackling everything as a team! My niece had TERRIBLE reflux and even went to a feeding therapist since she had so much trouble eating because of the reflux and other GI issues. I know it caused my sister all kinds of upset and everyone was worried about her keeping up with her growing. She's still a little spindly kiddo who seems to mostly live on air and mac n'cheese but she's doing great otherwise -- but I know it was and still is a long road.

Anne is 1 year today (as of 8:32 this morning to be exact!). She is a little bouncy bean. I'm hoping to meet my husband for lunch with her and then bring her by my fertility clinic to say hi to 'her' team

    @mbradfo2 Happy birthday Anne!

My T will celebrate his first birthday in 3 days! Time flies. We are in Asia now to celebrate his birthday with my extended family as well as mine and DH’s family members who traveled with us. This is not only T’s first international trip but his first trip ever and boy is it not easy! T gets motion sickness and I found out the hard way: he projectile vomited right into my crotch area as we were on a tour bus so I had to sit in vomit soaked pants and underwear for the next 6 hours... and then he may have also caught a stomach flu as he threw up for about a day, followed by diarrhea and fever. We spent two days cooped up in our hotel instead of sightseeing. I’m so exhausted I totally underestimated the challenges of traveling with an infant. I’m never traveling with a child under two.

@cashewchicken oh no! Sorry the trip has been so challenging. Any chance the motion sickness vomit was really due to him having a cold/bug? That would be very challenging to deal with motion sickness and traveling.

So nice you’re families traveled with you hoping you can still celebrate and enjoy the big milestone

@persnickity The three vomiting during the bus ride may have been from a cold/bug too,  but it’s hard tell whether it was that or motion sickness unless we go for another bus ride up the mountain. He definitely gets cranky every time we go on a bus ride. But I’m not sure how much of that is due to him unable to cruise/crawl freely. During the car ride at home he seems to have no problem but that’s probably because he falls asleep almost right away in his car seat.

@wildrainbow I’m sorry that your son is suffering from reflux but I’m glad that his new medication is working for him. Hoping he’ll gain weight quickly.

Careful planning isn’t really my thing and I often do things without considering what could go wrong... Many of my friends travel with infants so I thought, how hard can it be? And the destination (Japan) is a first world country with a great health care system, and I speak the language, so even if something bad were to happen, I figured I could deal with it. When my son had a fever for two days, I realized how wrong I was. Back home every time his temperature spiked, it freaked me out. It was a million times worse when it happened abroad. Just being far away from his pediatrician and the hospital I am familiar with made me feel super anxious. Good thing he fully recovered from the stomach bug that he had!

@Hopeful_mom It was really nice having his grandparents on both side of the family, aunt and uncle (my sis and BIL) and many of his great uncles and aunties with us to celebrate his first birthday!

Today he turned one and I’m so thrilled that we made it! And I am so thrilled that breastfeeding is soon coming to an end! My goal was, if I were lucky to, to nurse him exclusively for the first year. This trip made him even more dependent on my boobs but dang it, I’m going to wean him so that I can sleep through the night!

@cashewchicken congrats on a year of breastfeeding!! I've learned it's not an all or nothing thing, like i thought. If you want to, you can still nurse at other times, just but the middle of the night. I cut the middle of the night feedings cold turkey when she was 15 months, but still nurse before bed and on demand for weekends. Now at 19 months, she's almost weaned herself.

AFM -- Anne has started standing up on her own without any assistance. She did it once on Friday and then a couple times today. She's definitely working on getting going, that's for sure. We have her 1 year check up this week and I'm a little anxious about the new shots (different shots at 1 year -- mmr, chicken pox, hep a). We're leaving for Disney next weekend so I hope she'll be a-okay by then if she has any reaction.

@mbradfo2 I didn’t even think about the new shots at 1 yr! Abigail’s is the Friday afternoon before her bday party weekend - I really hope she does okay with them all!

The only one I'm anxious about is the mmr -- it seems to cause more reactions (local, fever) than other shots for whatever reason. Her appt is on Thurs afternoon and we leave for Disney on Sunday so that should give her enough time to get over anything if she gets a fever or local reaction.

    Thanks everyone!

@persnickity I am not going to wean him off cold turkey, but probably over a month or two. I wish I can continue to nurse until he naturally weans himself off but DH and I want to try for #2 soon and for that we need to be fully weaned off for 3 months, according to my RE. I’m 40 turning 41 in a few months so unfortunately the time is not on my side. You gave me some advice on how to go about weaning him off, so I will be experimenting after we get back from the trip and my kid is recovered from jet lag (do babies get jet lags? I don’t know). I tried a bit of weaning some of the feedings before the trip but I sort of gave up after him getting sick and the time difference with this trip.

@mbradfo2 My son has been having fun standing without any support. I think the longest he was able to stand was 30 seconds or so. His ability to balance has improved considerably, and I’m wondering if he’ll take his first step soon. My son got an early MMR vaccine before the trip after I found out about measles and rubella outbreak in Japan. :( He got his 4 days before the trip, which wasn’t ideal (I think it takes 10-14 days for immunity to set) but better than nothing. He will have to get his again in a month since he was not yet 12-months old at the time of vaccination. He didn’t have much reaction to the vaccine, but then he hasn’t had any reaction to vaccines since two months old.
