So since we are already discussing the topic, has anyone's provider given them a target weight gain goal? I'm a "normal" or healthy BMI, so I just assumed my target goal would be 25 to 35lbs. So cue my surprise when my doctor launched into a story about how new studies are showing less weight gain is optimal (if I recall correctly she specifically mentioned fewer instances of gestational diabetes and also strength for birth/recovery). Anyway, she said the new suggested weight gain is only 20 to 25lbs. I was shocked! I am going to try not to stress about it too much. I plan to just focus on eating healthy and being as active as I can, and then not worry about what the scale says (although, easier said than done).
Just curious if anyone else has heard this new, lower suggested weight gain?
Side note: I legitimately went to high school with a girl who gained more than 250 lbs with her pregnancy, and that was unhealthy. About six years later she has now had gastric bypass, but I didn't even know it was possible to double your weight like that with pregnancy (she was a bit heavier to begin with). Every inch of her looked like it was about to explode, and that's not me making a joke. I felt bad for her, but I also saw her posting the most fattening pictures of food she was eating several times a week (two double cheeseburgers, large fry, large chocolate milkshake, etc.).
Moral of the story: eat healthy, listen to your doctor, and gain the weight you're going to gain. And like @cmbt2 said, tell those people what to go do with a cactus!
Gaining 250 pounds in any eight month stretch of your life is a serious health crisis. Holy jamoly!

My midwife gave me the "try not to gain more than 20 pounds" speech (I already weigh over 160, at 5'7", so no giant but not thin), but she rolled her eyes while she did it an emphasized eating healthy fats and making sure I get movement in my day.
I have not heard of new, lower weight gain suggestions. WebMD still says the same numbers.
This is such a touchy subject because so many women have disordered eating.

I hadn't heard that new, lower amount. My RE told me the 25-35 but he also said not to worry about it. He said, and I quote: "I'd rather have you gain more than the 'recommended' weight and be happy, than stress yourself and the baby out worrying about your weight gain. Just don't eat McDonald's every day and mix in lots of veggies, and you'll be fine." I love that man.
I don't have an appt with my OB until Friday, so I'll let you know if he gives me the "new" numbers!
@wintersong, I know it's a touchy subject, I apologize if I shouldn't have brought it up. I actually didn't plan to but figured since people were already discussing weight gain, i might ask since the question has been on my mind ever since my appointment.

My old OB really pressed the "ideal weight gain" agenda of 25 to 35lbs. She brought it up more than once.
My new OB (when I finally brought it up because it was one of my 352,876 questions) said yes that is "ideal" but to not worry about it. She said if weight becomes an issue we'll talk about it and to just keep eating as healthy as you can and keep moving as much as I already do. I like this doctor SO much more.
I'm also already up 12-15lbs. Mostly due to me stopping one of my medications while I'm pregnant. It's a side effect that I was fully aware of so I wasn't to surprised.

Nope, but I’ve never had my main providers ever bring up weight as an issue, and I hit close to 35-40 lbs each time. Only once did I have an OB (he wasn’t my main and had awful bedside manners) mention my weight gain- I had put on 6 lbs in 2 weeks. He then looked at my legs and saw I had A LOT of water retention that explained the sudden gain. Both times, my main providers were very much “your cravings are telling you what you need; just don’t go overboard on the sugar”
@grapeskittles4lyfe My mom is the SAME! She always comments on how crazy my life is with my two boys and whenever we would talk about having a third she would say "how are you going to do it?!" Also things like, "I always knew two was the perfect number. You only have two hands after all." Grrrrr *TW When I MC last fall she felt super sad for me and I think she also realized that we were moving ahead with our plan to have three... and that it was none of her business anyway. So she's backed off with the comments. I feel like she might make snide remarks to her friends, but to my face she's seemed excited so far. My dad on the other hand is like yours--cannot believe his luck that he gets another grandchild.
@cmbt2 I don't know hope you held back. I think there would have been a throat punch somewhere in there if it was me. Last pregnancy I also gained 50 lbs. Lost all the weight but not all of the flab, if that makes sense. Luckily this time I didn't gain in the first tri like I did last time, but I'm just waiting for those ugly comments to come. They're going to see my angry face for sure.

I can’t remember who mentioned it or even if it was this thread but saying about how they want the fruit to be more in season, I always feel the same way but still buy it over the winter. This past week we got the most red and delicious strawberries and also super sweet blueberries! I was like where did these come from 🤨 and although I’m grateful I was a little suspicious 😂
it's strawberry season here in Florida! We've had a lot!! And oranges too but I don't really eat those. I could go for some pineapple or watermelon though.
Just wanted to give a heads up for anyone interested, Macy's is having a "VIP" sale with 30% off and a lot of the maternity clothes are included. It's still a little too early for a lot of us but just in case you want to stock up while things are discounted.

I have like 5 things sitting in my cart!! I should just do it! lol
Thanks, @stephanie123456! Any advice from anyone on how to buy maternity clothes before you need them? I've never bought any (besides the underpants everyone recommended on here), so I'm honestly not even sure how it works. 🤷

Buy what size you currently are. Like, i’m a 4, so I fall into size small. Pants and shirts are designed to grow with you. So, whatever size shirt and pants in the S/M/L variety you currently can wear with a belly band is the size you want to start with
@meagan-t I think the sizing is pretty true. I tend to gain weight in my tummy, hips, butt and thighs so I ordered a Medium in pants (at delivery I was 176 lbs) and was able to wear regular, stretchy shirts for the majority.

@meagan-t I did one big haul last time with my March 2017 son and bought all wintery clothes and it worked out! I didn’t have to buy any more after that. This time I’ve already purchased two sets of maternity shorts to be my staples over the summer then I will likely go with dresses a lot of the time, since that’s what I like to wear regularly anyways. I may have to cave and buy a pair of maternity jeans come October, but sometimes Ohio can be weirdly hot still that time of year so I’m gonna wing it til then!
Thanks, @cmbt2 and @stephanie123456. I felt silly asking, but being a one-income family now, I want to make good choices when it comes to things that'll be out of the return period by the time I need them.
@kindbytealikat, I bought these: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01LWKDR5X/ and really like them! They're a bit big in the tush area (I have a normal-sized behind), but they're actually kind of sexy other than that. My husband even likes how they look, so that's a plus! Regarding sizing, I'd personally say go true to size. I ordered up, but I truly think the butt is a little looser than it should be. Maybe my butt will grow with pregnancy? Just another great "unknown until it happens," I guess.
@meagan-t my butt was the only thing that got better with pregnancy! and actually stayed that way after. It was just fuller and more toned from carrying around the extra weight.
Thanks everyone! I've already told my mom we would find out what we're having a cool 2 weeks later than when we'll really know, so that gave be some satisfaction.
Spring has finally arrived in Germany. I celebrated by lugging the clothesline outside this morning and washing an extra load before leaving for work. No more 3-day-drying periods until I can wash the next one!
With DD1 she was born with a full head of dark hair so I'd had to figure out brushing techniques from the start. Settled on plumping her in front of Daniel Tiger once the hair got long enough to warrant styling (i.e. getting it out of her face). DD2 had hair, but it fell out and came back blond, so it's just now getting to be a pain. Am starting the same procedure with her and it really makes me go awwww in the mornings when I have two heads in front of me watching "it's almost time to stop so choose one more thing to doooo"
@emily1052, I'm wide awake with pregsomnia at 4am, so I left a treat for you in the sex thread (....that sounds so strange.....). You don't have to wait 6 months 😉
Been up for 4 hours, on the ground in Chicago now! Looking forward to a day of sitting in the hotel grading papers. Also, somehow I didn't see the rain in the forecast, so no umbrella. Whoops! (Sorry if the pic is enormous. I'll resize once I'm on my computer!
@steminist What are you doing in Chicago? I was literally just looking at flights to go up there between Spring and Summer semester next month. I'm from IL and want to go visit family. It'll be DD1's first plane ride if we go. Flights are pretty cheap right now.
Okay I just have to vent. I am SO SICK this week - the MS is at an entirely different level than before. I can't eat a thing without it coming back up. I'm almost 12 weeks! Isn't this supposed to get better? I think I've been pretty cheerful through two weeks of bronchitis that kicked my ass, then discovering a SCH that scared the crap outta me by bleeding out, being put on bed rest, etc. But I'm fed up. I just want to feel good for a few days and not have something dragging me down!! Argh. I feel like I should just go back to bed today and try again tomorrow!
@jenferlee82, I'm sorry you are feeling so terrible ☹☹ Can you call your doctor to get a prescription for nausea meds? You need to be able to keep some food down!
@galentine Thank you! It helped to whine about it a little bit. I'm hoping he can - I have an appointment tomorrow morning so figured I'd wait and ask him about it then. I'm still eating a lot because I'm always hungry, but it's a lot less fun when it comes back up 15 minutes later!
@jenferlee82 Another plug to call your doctor. I’ve gotten a scripts over the phone many times (including yesterday). They don’t want you to suffer and there are so many options for meds! (But you may have to do some trial and error). I hope you get some relief soon.
@jenferlee82 I am so sorry! You've been through so much during this pregnancy and you deserve some relief! I agree with the PPs to call your doctor today if you want to get on something ASAP. I'm glad that you'll be in to see him tomorrow, though. I hope you feel better!

@galentine First - that is one of my top 3 shows. Love it! Second, that was totally my husband the other day. I never throw up normally and he had no idea how to handle it. Hahaha

@aprosch I'm up for an AP conference. My school is participating in a grant program to improve techniques in math and science AP teaching, and our spring workshop is tomorrow.

My OB told me this with my son. I was like okay, got it.
I ended up gaining 50lbs and she never said a word to me.
My current OB just said I'd only need to up my calories by about 500. She never gave me a target to stay close to.
