Just had a growth scan this morning. Little man is measuring in the 76% and measuring around 34 weeks (I turn 33) tomorrow. Still a complete previa though, so bummer on that. But 3.5 weeks left.
Do you guys specifically ask what measurement percentile they're in? Or do they tend to just tell you as they go along? During my last FA she just said "she is just over 3 pounds which is great" at 30 weeks but I had to ask to even get that out of her haha. Do you think it's appropriate for me to ask percentile?
@kristenhk ours tells us as we go and I watch the screen as the measure because it will tell you their growth in weeks (at least where I go it does). I think it's perfectly acceptable to ask what they are measuring at and their growth in general.
@kristenhk My doc always tells me. At my first appointment with this insurance my doc reviewed the 20 week scan from my previous doc and told me. I also had a follow up appointment purposely scheduled for like 2 days after my growth scan so she could review the results with me.
I think its perfectly acceptable to ask though. I asked the tech at my growth scan if my SCH had cleared up since it had still been visible on my 20 week.

@mrstmoose I think it’s a display option as to whether there’s a sidebar with the measurements and weeks/%s. I’ve seen the tech flip from one to the other. However, they usually also have a summary screen with the same info that you can ask to have printed.
Both the tech and the doc told me baby was measuring in the 93rd percentile (so 7.3 lbs or so) today, but the tech wouldn’t print the summary screen for me. Boo. All I remember is head >99% 😲
now preparing more seriously for the possibility of a giant baby/emergency c-section. Anyone have good resources?

My friend had a 8lb baby at 35 weeks, he was a preemie but just if, her water broke and they went in for their c-section. (She can’t deliver any other way) so it was an emergency planned c-section? She says it was awesome. I guess if look into the hospital policies and writing a csection birth plan.
Reason for being high risk: pPROM at 11 weeks and 3x placental abruption in the following weeks, leading to low amniotic fluid and possible delayed lung development.
Update: After bugging him for weeks, my OB finally had conversations with two different specialists regarding my case and specifically my birth plan. Originally he told me I'd probably need a scheduled c-section at 38 weeks but he called me yesterday and said they'll allow me to go to term, yay! I have to wait until my appointment next week to get specifics, plus I forgot to ask whether I need to get the steroid shot, but I'm feeling much more optimistic knowing things look good
@lyse01 Agree with @kbirchtree - asking about the hospital policies and creating a birth plan is great advice. For example I wasn't allowed to hold my baby but knowing that in advance made it sting slightly less. I also had DH on board to be with baby at all times and to do skin-to-skin while they waited for me. With a c-section it's extra important to have your SO be on board to advocate for you and baby. Also ask about PP pain management in advance. I was only allowed normal ibuprofen in the hospital and was in so much pain! I didn't know most hospitals give stronger pain killers (which are also safe for BF) until I was already home.
Had our growth scan this morning. LO is measuring 96th percentile (they estimate 6lbs, 11oz). We have a follow up in 3 weeks for a final scan so my MFM can help my doctors determine if they want to schedule me for a c-section. She explained why we wouldn’t want to induce. I also have slightly elevated fluid levels so she wants to re-check those at the last scan but she feels pretty positive that they aren’t any concern. I’m definitely stressing less now than I was after our last scan. Helped to have DH there to remind me of questions we wanted to ask her.
@booksandicecream I’m thrilled for you that your third tri is going so smoothly and everything seems to be good news!
@jlklec19 what are your MFM & OB’s rationale for c-section? My OB def offered me the option for one because baby is 93rd percentile, but didn’t indicate she had a preferred option. She did mention increased risks of shoulder dystocia (sp?), perineal trauma, and emergency c-section, but didn’t have any details when I asked for absolute comparisons, eg is the rate going from 1% to 2% or 20% to 40%? I’m also planning on asking if shoulder dystocia is a negative outcome in and of itself or if it has/can have knock-on effects that are the real problem.
@lyse01 I'd definitely have multiple plans but wanted to give you some assurance that a 99% head baby can come out of a petite body vaginally. My son had a huge head and my labor was described by my midwife as quite easy. So there is hope!
@lyse01 so right now they just keep saying "we'll talk about a c-section" - my MFM worded it the way that I put above (helping my OB determine if a c-section is our best bet), but my OB has been holding off on discussing it until we get the final scan back. They wanted this additional scan so they could put their best foot forward by seeing his growth patterns. My MFM is concerned that the final scan won't be quite as accurate as this one in determining his size, but they still want to check and monitor my fluid levels. They are primarily discussing the possibility of a c-section because of the reasons that you listed - they mostly seem concerned about shoulder dystocia (from my understanding). She said it's totally possible that I'll be able to have him vaginally - lots of women have pushed out 9+ lb babies, but her main concern is that I have really narrow hips and a vaginal delivery could end up in the possibility of an emergency c-section. But neither my OB or MFM are recommending a c-section yet - I think they more just want me to know that it's an option (I really hadn't thought about a c-section prior to my last growth scan so it's been good for me to at least think about as an option) and we're really playing the "wait and see" game. They haven't even officially offered me that as an option yet - they all keep hoping that his weight gain may slow, but we aren't seeing any evidence of it yet.
