PIAF graduates-new mommies-February

So I finally placed my carters order. It gave me this code for 15$ off for first time orders over $50. Thought I'd share it so any late purchasers to the bogo offer on their onsies.

Re: PIAF graduates-new mommies-February

  • Confession time: in the winter the twins spend a lot of time in their footed sleepers. In the next 4-5 weeks as spring starts to nudge in here in Texas they are going to want to start exploring outside. I need help choosing a good shoe that is easy to get on and off them and is okay with and without socks on their feet. (they don't keep them on anyway). Has anyone found a favorite shoe for their walkers?
  • @stella as long as its dry we love leather Moroccans... that way they can still feel the ground but have some protection. For us they held up pretty well even outside and were only ~15$. Otherwise I would suggest finding something with the thinnest sole so that they can continue to work on their balance/feeling the ground. It will be a while before R can walk around outside so she still wears leather soled slippers (lexibugs)...

  • @stella_700 we got these https://www.amazon.com/BENHERO-Toddler-Sneaker-Anti-Slip-12-18months/dp/B0772GMPKF/ref=mp_s_a_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1549739664&sr=8-4&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_FMwebp_QL65&keywords=baby+tennis+shoes&dpPl=1&dpID=51+EUoq73oL&ref=plSrch last summer/fall when she was starting to walk. They washed up great when they got dirty. M always wore socks, but that's because her feet sweat. We did have to be careful about the sole on some shoes. There wasn't enough grip and she'd fall.
  • Anne's starting to cruise a bit so she'll likely be walking in the next few months and I've been wondering about shoes too! She's just been barefoot while crawling and standing but I figure once she gets going, she'll likely need something more. Right now we've been going barefoot 99 percent of the time (no socks). I'll check those out!

  • @stella_700 Thanks for starting the February thread!

Any ladies have any healthy snacks you recommend? I’ve been snacking oh so much and so much junk food too since I had my son. I have to get in the habit of eating healthy again and am wondering if you have any healthy snacks you recommend. Ideally high protein low carb snacks would be great!

I like keeping some hard-boiled eggs in the fridge for snacks. Also Laughing Cow cheese wedges or Babybel Cheese rounds. I also like to have raw veggies like cherry tomatoes, broccoli, cauliflower and I have some little individual low fat ranch dip containers. We also keep little individual serving packs of nuts (pistachios, walnuts, almonds, etc) on hand. I like the single serving pistachio packs with the shells on since I can suck on the shell after I eat the nut.... >.> I just like its salty flavor.

  • @cashewchicken we buy blocks of cheese and cut them into servings for snacks. Plus keep a nut mix that we like on hand. We also buy big containers of Wallaby Aussie Greek yogurt and put it in single serve containers. It's 19 g of protein and reasonable in the carbs. And the vanilla bean flavor is amazing. Like eating ice cream.
  • @persnickity My son is cruising too so maybe in the next couple of months he’ll start walking. I’ll checkout the shoe you recommend.
thanks for the snack recommendations. I love cheese and I’ve been eating gruyere cheese but they tend to be on the salty side so I’ve been eating thin slices of that with apple. I love vanilla flavored yogurt so I’ll definitely check it out. Since pregnancy, I’ve been eating Icelandic yogurt and lately, leftover baby yogurt. Need to explore more yogurt!

@mbradfo2 Thanks for the recommendations! I love laughing cow cheese! I’ll get some from target this weekend. Just got some fresh veggies too, and hummus. Forgot about the ranch dressing! I have a pack of hidden valley ranch dressing that I bought a while ago. How long is it good for, I wonder. Thinking about making some tonight! I love roasted, unsalted almonds myself and have been munching on that a lot at work, in between bags of Cheetos. My workplace is the worst place for people on diet as we have free candies and junk food.

  • Got our birth story pics, including BF for the first time and leaving NICU, yesterday. They were much harder to look at than I expected. My photographer did amazing, as always, capturing our emotions. I'm hoping one day that I will be able to see them without so many negative emotions attached.
On another note, ds1 turns 3 on the 24th. I can't believe it. My timehop has been showing a bunch of pics from when he was a baby and it's crazy how tiny he was. If you looked at him, you so I would never know he was a preemie as well. He's come so far, from no words at 18 months to now speaking at a 4 year old level.
M is a giant compared to what he was when he came home. I can't wait for our 4 month appt on the 26th to see how much he's grown. He now coos and "talks" loudly to us. He is more reserved around others tho. He is already developing quite the personality.

@wildrainbow Birth story pics! That’s nice! How your sons arrived may not have been what you had expected, but sounds like they are thriving and that’s all that matters! My birth wasn’t what I had expected either. My son had the umbilical cord wrapped twice around his neck and not sure if that was the cause, but he was slow to breathe on his own. He had a few problems at birth and spent the first 4 days of his life in NICU but now he is healthy and turning out to be quite a trouble maker.

Even though my son is the first born and it took 3 years for us to welcome him, we were pretty bad about documenting his arrival and capturing his growth. I take pics with my cellphone but I’m a lousy photographer and I always forget to take pics in the first place :( We are going on a trip next month and thinking about getting a pretty decent camera for the trip and to take more pics of my son.

Ugh my son had been sick for the past two weeks and DH and I also caught a bug from him too. Everyone is sick.

  • @cashewchicken I feel like the first 6-8 months of daycare was non stop colds for everyone. We got healthy and immediately got sick a week later. Then we turned a corner and it's been so much better! Hardly any issues with being sick now. It does get better.

Struggling a bit right now with sleep schedules. She goes to sleep without any issues, but had been waking up before 5 every day. Any tips on getting her to sleep or stay quiet until 5/5:30??
  • persnickity I'm with you on the sleep schedule issues. They hit leap nine and we started having all sorts of problems, all of them dealing with sleep. Victoria began waking up at 4 or 4:30 and be all about Mommy and only mommy. It would take an hour to get her back to sleep, and she'd only finish the night sleeping on me. Chase began yelling his head off at bedtime. We haven't had any issues with bedtime routine for months now?! I think they turned a corner last night, I kept them up an extra half an hour and had Dh play with them running up and down the hall. It was almost two full weeks of struggle though. Sometimes Chase gets up early like that when he has gas/and or needs to poop, I let him move around for a bit on the living room floor, it works its way out and then I offer a sippy cup of milk and hold him. He often will go back to sleep.
  • @stella_700 the leaps and teething were terrible for sleep. The leap was bad the first few days, but teething seemed to upset it the most.  We get up at 5:30/6am at the latest, so it's hard to have her go back to sleep if she's up at 4:30am. Did changing the bedtime help?
  • @persnickity Too soon to tell if we've really made it through. I will say that Victoria slept through the night. She's been my biggest battle lately. Her refusal to let anyone else hold her at night and her refusal to be put down when she wakes up in the MOTN was killing me. If I could take some half days it would okay but while working a full time job I was a zombie last week. I literally think I woke up after falling asleep at my desk.
  • @persnickity My son’s pediatrician also told me that the first six months are the worst. I agree. This cold is so bad. Every few days as soon as I start to feel better, I get worse.
Hope you figure out a way to get your daughter to sleep longer. Ever since the cold, my plan to wean my son off the 2-3am feeding sorta went out the window. Ugh. We are planning an overseas trip next month and I’m debating holding off on weaning till we get back. I have a feeling a time difference will throw my son off.

  • @stella_700  @cashewchicken

We've hit leap 7 here and sleep has been all over the place. The past few days she had been waking up at 5 am and wanting to start her day; thankfully, i was able to keep her in bed until 6 am today. It's almost 9 pm here and she still hasn't fallen asleep....just babbling in her crib since we put her down. At least she's not crying which had been the norm for the past few days -- just inconsolable whenever we'd put her down for a nap or bed.

This morning she got super upset when I brought her over to my mom's like usual for the morning and was just sobbing once I handed her off to my mom. My mom says it's normal at this age but I felt terrible!

She's working on her unassisted standing -- was getting a few seconds here and there this evening before she plopped back down on the floor or grabbed back onto whatever she was holding. I'm so excited to see her start walking but also nervous about what it will entail (and also sorta anxious whether she will, but that's just me being paranoid and also not being able to imagine my little baby as a toddler).

  • @cashewchicken hope everyone is feeling better! So hard to do anything when ur down and out for the count too!

@persnickity have no advice on the sleeping but feel ur pain! Mine was partying last night and first really went bac down at 3am.

@mbradfo2 I hear ya on all front with the standing even though mine hasn’t crawled yet so I rather her do that before trying to run all over the place.

  • @mbradfo2 The further we got into leaps, the harder they got on her sleep. We also had some crying at drop offs, but her crying stopped almost as soon as I left the room. The leap would make the separation anxiety worse, but don't be surprised if separation anxiety comes and goes.
  • @mbradfo2 @Hopeful_mom The sweet little babies will soon be mobile and into everything. My two walked at around 13 months and are now full on running everywhere. Chase also climbed up onto the couch unassisted yesterday and promptly fell off of it. I had a moment but he didn't even cry, just rolled over and looked at the couch.

@persnickity I'm reporting in that for the first time in probably 6 weeks both babies slept through the night. I feel amazing. Victoria has slept through the night for the past three nights so I think we are through the worst of the leap with her. Chase we still have issues with naps (like none at all) and bedtime routine.
  • Ds1 is three today. I'm over here staring at him remembering how it seems like just yesterday I was told I may never get pregnant, to almost having him at 27 weeks, to having him at 35 weeks, to now. My sweet little miracle is now a feisty, very opinionated little boy who does nothing by half measures and throws his whole being into everything.
  • @stella_700 that has to feel amazing. You feel like a whole new person with a few nights of solid sleep. We haven't been dealing with the once a night wake up for that long yet. Gives me hope to see it ending. She's sleeping through the night at least once each week since December, so at least there's that. 😉
  • @wildrainbow happy birthday!! 3 already and he already had a brother! Way to go mama!!

  • Our car seat bag for flying fell apart. The straps for carrying like a backpack got ripped off during our last flight. It only last through 4 round trips before breaking. We're debating about just getting a cheap car seat and not worrying about it getting beat up. Any suggestions on better bags or on cheap car seats?

Cloth diapering question for anyone out there with older littles. The twins will be 16 mo next week and I'm beginning to have a rubbing issue with the cloth diapers, its leaving a rub/blister/raw area and their little butts/thighs. If you come across this before and found a solution on snapping them a certain way I'd be grateful. I've come this far with the cloth diapers and I'd hate to switch to disposables this late in the game.

    ed. words
  • @BusinessWife had been doing cloth diapers. Not sure if she can help you.

I think our sleep issues resolved themselves. It was likely a growth spurt/teeth issue. She's no longer eating in the middle of the night like she had been. Still waking up way too early.
  • @persnickity I'm glad that your issues have improved. With our son we are celebrating him sleeping through the night for a week straight. Victoria is still struggling with MOTN wake-ups and when it happens nothing but momma will do. I think her issue is teeth related as her eyeteeth are just pointing out of her gums right now. I'm giving them all the chew stuff right now.
  • I’ve been sick for the last three weeks (just catching a bug one right after another) and today I finally feel better, about 95% back to normal. My son has been sleeping much better too, often going 6, 7 hours between feeds at night.

@persnickity I don’t know about car seat bags but I’ve been looking into a cheap car seat like this one:
    https://www.walmart.com/ip/Cosco-Scenera-Next-DLX-Convertible-Car-Seat-Candy-Apple/41126743?selected=true

Supposed to be lightweight with decent reviews.

  • @stella_700 what kind/brand of cloth diapers are you using? you may need to go up in size... Though rub issues are pretty rare... one other thing to look into, do they smell like ammonia after washing? Its possible that your diapers need to be stripped....

  • Abigail has been a total daddy's girl at night - so much so that if I go in and try and comfort her, all she wants is him and won't calm down until he comes in. Which usually is fine (yay I get to sleep!) but he's going out of town next week for work and I'm worried she will just be beside herself at night. She usually only wakes up around 11pm and 3:30-4am and goes back to sleep with a little back rub and or quick rocking, but when I go in, she gets even more upset. We have tried both going in, DH handing her off to me, just me, etc. and she will scream for 30min+ until DH comes in so we can all get some sleep. As soon as he walks in the room, she calms right down and will fall back asleep. I'm hoping that since he won't be around, it'll be out of sight, out of mind and she'll be fine with just me at night. Any advice??
  • @mtpbadger I don't have much advice. Some days my daughter has a preference, but most of the time she is fine with either of us. That said, we've had grandparents do the bedtime routine when we've had a date night. We explained to her that we were going to be gone and they would tuck her in. She actually walked them through her routine and went right to sleep. I think they understand more than we give credit for. Talk to Abigail about her dad being gone and that he'll be home soon. That it's just you guys until then. I'm not saying it will fix anything, but it might help.
