Re: *Product Spotlight - Strollers*

  • We have the Burley Solstice jogging stroller. I really like it. I felt like it was pricy (~$350 or so with the “infant car seat adaptor”). It’s worked well on walks/runs around the neighborhood and the zoo. The ride is nice and smooth and we’ve done a little bit of off roading in it, lol. We don’t take it anywhere else though since it’s rather large. If we’re going somewhere with a lot of people in a smaller area (ie a mall, European cities 🤣) I’ll usually just babywear DS (even now, lol).

For those who will have a toddler/infant what are you guys planning on doing? Double stroller or just a stroller board? I’m thinking that I’ll just wear new baby (and push DS in the stroller) until he/she is like 6mo and by then maybe DS can listen/obey enough to do the stroller board? DS would be almost 3 by the time new baby is ~6mo. Good or crappy plan? Lol!

  • FTM here with a ton of questions. I've tried looking at some strollers online, but it's so overwhelming and confusing. I think I'll have to go into a store and talk to someone in person. For now, can anyone explain the car seat/stroller combo thing? If I want a car seat that can clip into a stroller, do I need to buy a stroller and car seat that are the same brand? Will the stroller just be an empty frame without the car seat? Do strollers that lie flat with a bassinet looking thing (or like an old fashioned pram) adjust to be diagonal or do you have to buy a new one later? Are the bassinets just for newborns? How long do new babies need to lie flat in the stroller?

Feel free to answer all or none of these questions lol. As you can see, I have no idea what I'm doing!!!!!!!

@themadcamel Going to try to answer all your questions!! Lol So for example of you buy a Graco stroller you would need a Graco car seat so it snaps into it. They also make other stroller brands that aren’t car seat brands, and they sell adapters so you can purchase the adapter you need for your car seat.

You can buy a stroller “caddy” which is just a frame for your infant seat to snap in which I loved to have because it was so light and easy to use with a newborn. But a regular stroller (can be a frame for infant seat and normal stroller too) can almost always be used to snap an infant seat into as well. I liked having the caddy frame because I didn’t want to start wear and tear on my regular everyday stroller so early in the game.

The strollers that have the pram looking bassinet need a regular seat too for when the baby is older. We started using the regular seat when our son was 6 months. Most don’t come with the pram; it needs to be purchased separely but I do know that the uppa baby does come with the pram.

i hope that answers your questions. Let me know if I can clarify anything.

  • @themadcamel strollers are overwhelming!

Many strollers have adaptive pieces that you buy separately for a specific car seat. So you can mix and match a bit, but it’s sometimes easier to stick with the same brand as they fit together perfectly. I had a separate stroller “Chicco keyfit caddy” that was specifically made for the Chicco Keyfit30 car seat that was perfect for grocery shopping and keeping in the trunk of my car. I had the “city mini jogger” that was really lightweight and manageable with 1 hand, and nice for longer walks and the mall, etc.

@themadcamel Where do you live (suburb/city)? What are you thinking you will need the stroller for?

Infant car seat / stroller combo - called a travel set? I think. You can buy them together in a set and the car seat clicks into the stroller. Useful for when LO is little. Easy to move LO from car to stroller when they are sleeping. Which they do a lot when tiny people (but not toddlers). The ones you buy in sets (car seat/stroller) are not empty frames when you take the car seat out. You can buy just a generic stroller frame for a lot of different brands of infant car seats.

No. Regular Strollers do not lie flat. I think there are some more European style prams out now that will be stroller like (ie kid sits upright) and will also lie flat. They are usually more expensive though.

    eta more.

Newborns need to lie flat/be supported (in the car seat) until they can basically sit up unsupported-ish. That’s usually around the 6mo mark.

    • Stroller: City Select Lux
    • Lifestyle factors that might influence your choice: We chose a stroller with our first that had the option to be a double stroller as well.
    • What you like about it: I love all the different configurations it can do, it has many different attachments you can buy like a second seat, pram, glider board, bench seat. It can also be a double stroller which was our deciding factor when we bought it because we knew we would be having more than one child. It also pushes like a dream!!! I love that the seat folds up too (the regular city select seats do not fold)
    • What you don't like about it, if anything: it is a little heavy but it’s still so worth it!
    • Additional thoughts?: if you know you will eventually have more than one child I highly recommend this stroller or the uppa baby. Think about it... if you buy a single it only gets used with that’s one baby and probably wouldn’t get much use once your second comes along if they are fairly close in age.
  • @lillywonderland we have the city select lux which can turn into a double stroller. Our son will be just turning 2 when our second is born. I plan to buy the second seat for the stroller. From seeing my friends with the glider boards and such, once the toddler is out of the stroller it’s a free for all... they never want to go back in! Lol so I plan to keep him contained in a seat for as long as I can.
  • So I got a Chicco travel system with my daughter about a million years ago.  My carseats are expired and I rarely used the stroller because my daughter hated it.  I still have the stroller but, I am thinking of getting a different one this time since I need new infant seats anyway.

Any recommendations for a stroller that would be good for off roading/camping but not overly big? I would most likely only be using a stroller when camping and walking my daughter to school but will probably babywear doing that a lot.
  • @septoctkids thank you, that was very helpful! A caddy sounds like a good option.
@blitzybee is the city mini jogger good for traveling too?
@lillywonderland I live in Chicago, so very urban. We have an SUV for longer trips (plus I currently drive an hour to the suburbs for work) but usually take the L (train) around the city. I imagine needing the stroller for walks around the neighborhood and going to the park or zoo. I'd like to be out and about with the baby before the six month mark, so I guess I'd need something that can lie flat. Would I just baby carry if the stroller can't be used until LO can sit up?
  • @themadcamel Yes, you can definitely just baby carry if you just get a stroller for “older”
LOs (but even those ones have adaptors that will “work” with the infant car seats). It sounds like you’ll have the space for a larger, sturdier stroller with “real” wheels rather than those plastic ones which makes maneuvering so much easier! Also, re: traveling. I baby carried DS all around Europe and Hawaii when he was 9mo and 11mo. IMO (and DH’s) it was so much easier to get around public transport, airports and all the cobblestone streets on foot than with a stroller. We got a rain cover for our carrier (and there’s a winter cover that we don’t have and won’t need), so you can be sure LO is snuggly dry & warm when you’re baby carrying.
  • Let me preface this by saying that I really love strollers. So I have a total of 3. I live in the suburbs but frequent NYC. I have a 3 year old and a 1 year old.

I have a bugaboo cameleon for the 1 year old. I also used an adapter w it while he was mostly in his car seat. This is for short trips where the 3 year won’t tire out. The maneuverability is fantastic with this stroller but everything else sucks- it’s heavy and takes up a ton of space. And basically, you have to disassemble it every time you want to put in the trunk. For what it is, it’s not worth the price (I think it’s $1800 between frame, seat, canopy and fabric).

We use a BoB double stroller for zoo, parks and jogging. It’s fantastic and the kids love it, so I am assuming it’s more comfy. I love it. I also used it w a car seat and adapter for walks early on. Only downside is that it’s super heavy and takes up a lot of room. I have an SUV and when BoB is with me, there’s literally no room for anything else! I think I got it for $450 or so when BBB was having a sale.

The stroller that gets the most use is our Uppababy Vista. I keep the spare seat in the trunk and it’s really versatile. I use it for museums, supermarket, Costco etc. any place where the kids have to be contained. Only downside is that it’s hard to maneuver when it’s converted to a double. I do think you get the most bang for your buck since it converts. It’s sort pricey though- I think all in, about $1100? It’s been a while.

One more thing - both the bugaboo and the uppababy have baby bassinets for when baby can’t sit unassisted. Tbh, I rarely used the bassinet and just kept them in their car seats. So much easier, especially depending on terrain.

I guess with #3 on the way, I’ll be baby wearing more. Our outings are all day outings typically so my 3 year old gets tired and wants in the stroller. I prefer it though- as one pp mentioned, it’s nice to
keep them contained for as long as possible!

  • I also love strollers and have waaaayyyyy too many.

I will say it totally depends on what you want out of it to decide which route to go.

I love my frame stroller for when babies are in the infant car seat. So super easy and light. I have 2 doubles. 1st one is a macclaren and is side by side so my that my oldest is so big we don't use it and baby shouldn't be in it until 6 months I believe is what they recommend. I also have a single lightweight stroller and use it for quick trips or zoo visits or what not.

I have a city select also and like that because you can convert it to your needs. I have the bassinet adaption which is amazing when little but it's only good up to 20lbs but amazing for outdoor walks so baby doesn't get over heated in car seat. I also have 2 toddler seats and really like that they adjust for taller or bigger kids. The canopies extend a good distance to keep sun off legs.
I also have the piggy back board so my oldest can ride by not be in a seat so if she gets tired she can rest.
Only bad thing is stroller is kinda big and heavy and can be annoying remember which attachments to bring. Plus everything is a la carte so it can be kinda expensive depending on fabrics materials and attachments. Plus you can't use coupons on those brands if you purchase from a buy buy baby store.

I say if you're planning on having 2 close together invest in the city select/uppa vista/bugaboo donkey type stroller because their pros far out weight the cons and you use them for a long long time and they are durable.

If you have a more specific question please ask because I feel like I could go on and on and on forever.
  • @themadcamel it folds pretty compact for the type of stroller it is and we have traveled with it quite a bit. Nothing will beat an umbrella stroller for being tiny and lightweight, but we always were happy with our city mini and gate checking it.
  • We are a chicco family. When I was pregnant with DS, we got the keyfit and Cortina travel system. When we wanted an umbrella stroller, we bought a Chicco echo. They don't make it anymore... it was replaced by the Liteway. When DD was born, we used the same travel system and then bought a Double Echo. For this kiddo, we will need a new travel system because the car seat expired and I sold the stroller. We are registering for the Keyfit and Bravo travel system. I have no complaints about any of the products. Love, love, love Chicco.
  • @mommyshark13 I love chicco products too. They are great.

    • Lifestyle factors that might influence your choice: Suburbs, don’t jog but go on walks around town & paved park trails.
    • Favorite stroller: Graco Click & Connect Modes
    • Link/picture: https://www.walmart.com/ip/Graco-Modes-Click-Connect-Stroller-Grayson/305086585?wmlspartner=wlpa&selectedSellerId=0&adid=22222222228163724119&wl0=&wl1=g&wl2=m&wl3=277733335404&wl4=pla-517120495607&wl5=9017024&wl6=&wl7=&wl8=&wl9=pla&wl10=8175035&wl11=online&wl12=305086585&wl13=&veh=sem&gclid=CjwKCAiA45njBRBwEiwASnZT57njTD6N4K47ZmeXXMmleVMznmE2BE_KDAaq4LSNI3Ati3trJuvOsBoClX0QAvD_BwE
    • Cost (either actual dollar amount, or just $, $$, $$$, etc.): $159ish
    • What you like about it: Easy positional changes(10!), love that it lays all the way down and you can create a compete bassinet w/o gaps, had it over 5 years, main seat is so leighweight & if I have it facing forward and the sun is bright, I can just pick the seat up with baby in it and flip it around, great sun cover, can be used as a car seat only stroller - very lightweight, secure and sturdy feeling, removable snack tray, folds up easily and stands up w/o falling over, easy to unfold, great under storage for diaper bag.
    • What you don't like about it, if anything: Wish the wheels were a bit bigger, but great on sidewalks and even strolling on grasses. It’s also a bit bulky to pack in the trunk, but I’ve always had vans/suvs.
    • Is there a stroller you don't have but are considering? Why?: There are a few arbitrary target I saw that look very similar to this, but mine is still going strong, so I’m good with the one.
    • Is there a stroller you've tried that you absolutely hate? Why?: Ironically, I hate the Graco Click & Connect Double stroller. I have it, used it with my first two, but thought it was nothing like the single Modes one.
    • Additional thoughts?: I highly recommend going to a store where the have one on display and see how easy it is to switch the main seat around & to stroll it. Like I said, I think there are more out there like this, but when I got it 5 years ago, it was in a league of its own
  • @septoctkids I think the only gear item we have that isn't Chicco is our high chair. We had Graco convertible seats as our backup in DH's car and I hated them.
    • Lifestyle factors that might influence your choice: so we are a very outdoorsy family and last year I jogged my way through summer, so I obsessed over the cheapest way to provide me with a stroller for this. Which is what I don't recommend. We have the Graco FastAction folding jogger, and Urbini Reversi, and your cheapo $15 umbrella stroller
    • Favorite stroller: the Urbini Reversi wins HANDS DOWN
    • Link/picture:
    • Cost (either actual dollar amount, or just $, $$, $$$, etc.): the Urbini costs about $80, but there's usually one color that's cheaper.
    • What you like about it: it may be an umbrella stroller, but it off roads better than any air filled 3 wheeler I've ever seen. And the seat itself has 6 different positions: front, back, and 3 different reclines. So no bucket seat at birth! We had a Graco that bounces DS all over the place, but the Urbini, his head barely moves. Our cheapo umbrella stroller is magical and off roads amazing too, but I like it better for larger toddlers.
    • What you don't like about it, if anything: I am not a fan of the Graco. Yes it can have a set or non set wheel, which is ideal for off roading and jogging, but trust me, you will choose one or the other. Also, we've just had a lot of irritating issues with our Graco travel system working smoothly that makes us hate it. Also, as stated above, it has a mad bounce to it that could make a milkshake.
    • Is there a stroller you don't have but are considering? Why?: I was going to get a BabyTrend Expedition, but it was more expensive and DH really wanted a travel system.
    • Is there a stroller you've tried that you absolutely hate? Why?: I have had some pretty strong hate feelings to my Graco, but some days we made peace so I could run.
    • Additional thoughts?: even if you are not sure how much you'll use a stroller, don't go bottom dollar. It's at the bottom for a reason. We barely use ours and I still wish we went just a little higher in price.
  • As a self professed Stroller Queen (and part of the FB group) this is one of my favorite topics!

    • Lifestyle factors that might influence your choice: Climate, types of places you may go, space
    • Favorite stroller: We have a Nuna Mixx2 and love it it! We also have an UppaBaby Minu for my car/ travel which is great and we had a Bugaboo Cam3 that my husband loved. For the next stroller we'll need a double and likely will get a Bugaboo Donkey
    • Link/picture:
    • Cost (either actual dollar amount, or just $, $$, $$$, etc.): You get what you pay for with strollers and to us, they're an investment. Mine were $750 (Nuna), $400 (UB Minu), and $250? for a used Bugaboo. The Donkey will be around $1300 unless I find one used.
    • What you like about it: Things to love about high quality strollers: Fantastic push equals a smooth ride, they're built to last and if you take care of them they'll be around for a while, theyre gorgeous
    • What you don't like about it, if anything: I did not like the 2 piece fold on the Cam3. Its an amazing stroller, but not great for the car if you're at it alone.
    • Is there a stroller you don't have but are considering? Why?: See above, Donkey
    • Is there a stroller you've tried that you absolutely hate? Why?: No
    • Additional thoughts?: I'm a geek. I was dreaming about owning a Bugaboo when they first came out when I was a teenager. I go to our local Stroller boutique (Strolleria, highly recommend!) regularly and check out new options. I always encourage everyone to get a quality stroller if it's something they're going to use often. Yes, they're more expensive, but you can often find a used one in your range and it'll be well worth it :)

  • @themadcamel I'm going to add a bit to everyone's responses :)

Can anyone explain the car seat/stroller combo thing? Thats typically called a "travel system". While convenient, I do not recommed it for anything more than a quick trip as babies should really be limited in their time in a carseat outside of the car.
If I want a car seat that can clip into a stroller, do I need to buy a stroller and car seat that are the same brand?  Not necessarily. For your big box brands, yes. For your higher end strollers, there's a zillion different adaptors and you can typically mix and match
Will the stroller just be an empty frame without the car seat? Depends on the stroller, but typically no. Typically the carseat clicks on above the seat. So if you remove the carseat, you'll have the stroller seat.
Do strollers that lie flat with a bassinet looking thing (or like an old fashioned pram) adjust to be diagonal or do you have to buy a new one later?  If it has a bassinet, it also has a regular seat. The bassinet is the best option for a newborn as it lies flat, which is safest. You can continue to use the bassinet until baby outgrows or is able to roll over/ sit up.
How long do new babies need to lie flat in the stroller? Until they have good head control.

For instance, we use the Nuna Mixx2 with out dude. It comes as the stroller frame and then you can click in either the car seat adapator, the bassinet, or the seat. We'd do the carseat for quick stuff like CVS or grocery, the bassinet for longer things like shopping, and then switched to the seat (which does lay flat!) when he got older. We also used the bassinet for overnight sleep in our room the first couple months as its approved for overnight sleep :) Here you can see: https://www.nuna.eu/mixxseriesbassinet-mixx

  • @nda_roxybabe thanks, lady! Just curious, why does time in a carseat need to be limited outside of a car? Is it the way they're designed? You see, I know nothing! lol
  • @themadcamel AAP says it best: "For the best protection in a crash, car seats require infants to be placed in an upright position. However, this posture can partially compress the chest wall and reduce airway size, resulting in lower levels of oxygen." Studies have found babies oxygen levels can decrease when left in this position for an extended period. It's also not the safest position for sleeping. Now, all of this isn't to say that a carseat isn't safe - it is! It's just that a car seat is a neccesity in a vehicle to keep baby safe and the safety of that overrides any potential risk. However, time outside of the car is best spent out of a car seat.

Some sources for validity and because I'm clearly that person ;)

  • @lillywonderland I've started thinking about this toddler/infant conundrum. DS already wants out of his stroller all the time, except on walks, so we aren't considering investing in a double stroller since I don't think he'll want to be in it much. But I don't think he's going to be listening to us by then either! We're thinking we'll probably get a cheap umbrella stroller to use for DS for when we're all out together, and I guess I'll baby wear as long as possible when out with both by myself for walks/errands. I've started being more observant noticing what other people do, hoping that will give me a good idea at some point.
    • Lifestyle factors that might influence your choice: The big considerations for me were it would have to come in and out of the car a lot so it couldn't be so big I couldn't lift it, and it had to fit in the car along with things like groceries. And we take a lot of walks so needed something with a smooth ride that could handle uneven sidewalks and the occasional curb and do a bit of (very light) off roading.
    • Is there a stroller you don't have but are considering? Why?: No, we're planning to use the same infant carseat/stroller set up we did with DS. It's a Quinny Moodd and I don't dislike it but I also don't recommend it. We got it for less than half its list price (which is $$$). I don't think it's worth list price. It does do what we want it to just fine and has held up well so far, but I also don't feel it has anything that special about it. I've never used a different one.
  • I thought I had my stroller situation worked out, but now I have questions!

1- I would like to have a stroller for those first few months where baby can face me instead of outwards-any great suggestions?!

2- my son will be 4 when this baby comes. He stopped using a stroller when he was probably around the 2 year old range, however, we will bust it out once in a while if he’s sick and wants to go out on a walk, and will be bringing it to Disney World. The only time I can think I would need a double stroller is for the zoo or huge outings. Any mommas have a suggestion!? I’m thinking I would probably use a carrier for baby, and let my older son ride if needed, and skip the double stroller, right?

    thanks!
  • @blitzybee most strollers that theinfant seats click into face towards you. Are you looking for a travel system type stroller? I know the graco modes can face both ways. We have the city select lux and it has all different configurations.
  • @blitzybee  Re: your # 2 - I’ll let you know in the Fall if my plan works out! 🤣 We’re planning on skipping the double stroller. I will baby wear 2.0 a lot and prolly push 1.0 in the stroller when we’re out and about for the “big” outings.
  • @septoctkids I think I’m looking more at the bassinet type stroller that can also be angled up and face me..??? I have a caddy for the car seat, but long walks on pavement sucked! Too bumpy!

@lillywonderland sounds like we are on the same page... I suppose baby can ride in the stroller and a carrier can always be in tow just in case!

@blitzybee ooh ok! check out the single city select lux. We love it. So worth the money. You could get the bench seat or glider board for your older if you wanted as well.
  • @septoctkids will do. Thank you!
  • I got the Thule, which is great for running but a little weird for typical walking outings.  It reclines a little more than I would think a little one would like once they're past about 6 mos.  DS loves going in it, though, so what do I know?!  It was $500 and was our one baby splurge last time.  Now we're debating whether we need to get the double.  :/
  • @mamaber2204 what is the age gap going to be between your sons? Hard to know what to do sometimes!
  • @blitzybee 2 years and 3 weeks.
  • I'm a big fan of infant seats since they click into strollers. I have a travel system that I received with my first and since I'm having my kids so close, all 3 will be able to use that infant seat. When my second was born I bought the Graco DuoGlider and the infant seat (Graco) clicks into that one as well. I don't use that one too much but may have to this time since my second is my "runner".

I have a triple stroller that I'm looking at the Joovy Big Caboose. It has 2 seats and a sit/stand option for my oldest if she wants to. She will be 3.5 when this baby comes and can get tired so I like having the option with this one. Also it comes with an infant seat connector so I could put the baby's carseat in there too.

  • supermom34482 not sure if this thread is too old to be seen (I'm very behind everyone in finally making decisions about all of this stuff) but you said you had the bassinet for the city select - did you do the pram conversion or the pram deluxe? I cant decide between them, the conversion is so much cheaper but I also cant tell if its going to be comfortable for the kid for long walks (reviews said the mattress part is just cardboard?!) but other reviews say you cant fit the deluxe pram and a seat which would be an ideal situation for me for the next kid

  • @bluepeach565 I have the regular bassinet not the deluxe. They're both pretty similar and yes the bottom is cardboard. The bassinet and toddler seat were pretty tight. If you have bassinet up top you cant recline seat unless ita facing you but then the bassinet is in the toddler's grill. Not terribly but something to take into consideration. If bassinet is on bottom and seat up top theres a little more space. Also I'm not sure if the city select lux has more space, I have an older model maybe 2014? I really like it for what it is. No stroller is perfect but this one had the best options for our needs.
  • @supermom34482 amazing,  thank you for your response! I ordered the regular City Select - it's on sale on the BabyJogger website for $370! The BuyBuyBaby employee I spoke with said the Lux was mostly about the frame color/fabric options (though I think there is also a tiny bit more room). I agree that no stroller is perfect, but this one is a great combo of flexibility and price!

So overall - you felt the seat-converting-bassinet (wanted to make sure we are on the same page) worked for what you needed it for? I'm a FTM so I have 0 idea how babies like things, hence the worry about the cardboard bottom. We wont be using it as an overnight bassinet, just for longer walks in the stroller
