Any appointments? Questions?: I had a regular appointment yesterday and scheduled my anatomy scan for 3/18
Rants/Raves?: I am sick again. I just want to feel healthy and normal. Having the immune system of a pregnant person is not fun.
Any specific AMA concerns? Not now
GTKY: What do you think is easier about having kids later in life? More difficult? I think the biggest thing for me is I never feel like I'm missing out on anything. I had so much fun in my 20s and so much fun in the 5 years with my husband before we had our first. Being a parent is hard as it is, so it makes it easier to feel like there's nothing I'd rather be doing or wishing there was something I had done first. More difficult: I'm so tired. I also think as you get older you are a little more set in your ways, so adjusting to a baby's schedule and needs may not come as easily.
Any appointments? Questions?: Appointment Thursday. I'm actually going to ask if I can take my GD test earlier. I had GD last pregnancy (but not my first), and I'm having so many of the same symptoms after I have sugar/carbs (which of course is all I can eat right now!!!). I know I could focus on eating differently now without the diagnosis, but it would be more helpful for tracking.
Rants/Raves?: As I mentioned above, I've been feeling pretty woozy like I did last time I had GD. I am also still waiting on DH's blood work to come back and I'm getting a little annoyed.
Any specific AMA concerns?: N/A
GTKY: What do you think is easier about having kids later in life? More difficult?: So we live in a bubble where we were the youngest parents at our kid's daycare when DD1 started. I was 30 and DH was 29 and we were the youngest parents by 5 years. I've just never thought of parents 35+ as "older" because they seemed just like me. The only thing that I personally think is more difficult is the increased difficulty for your body to bounce back. And I don't mean baby weight. I mean all of it. I had severe back trouble after DD2 that took a lot of PT.
@peachy0709 Where we lived when we met, it was the norm to start having kids mid 30s. Now we are in an area where a lot of people our age have kids in elementary and even middle school. Thankfully, we are not the ONLY ones our age with a young family, but it is certainly different. I hope they let you take your GD test early!
Any appointments? Questions?: I had a *great* OB (actually with my favorite NP) appointment today. It was just supposed to be a doppler-heartbeat appt but an assistant wheeled in the ultrasound machine by mistake, so we wound up taking "just a peek" for fun and it was so relaxed and nice.
And @peachy0709 LOL I am the exact opposite way! I admire your diligence in seeking the diagnosis, while I'm like a monkey with my hands over my ears. The other thing that was SO GREAT about this appointment is that I asked when I'd have to have the GTT--many people with GD in prior pregnancies had reported that they took it early, at like 12ish weeks. But I was told that I'd just take it in the usual 24-29 weeks window. I had my A1C (blood sugar measurement) done at 10 weeks which came up normal, so I guess if it's going to develop into a problem it would be at the usual time of placenta going haywire. I discussed with my NP that I'm making diet and exercise decisions based on my prior diagnosis, but for the occasional treat she said that if I'm going to develop GD I "should enjoy food while I still can" haha.
Rants/Raves?: Rave... based on the encouraging GD conversation with the NP I gave myself a little cheat day today and didn't do an hour plus of grueling cardio for the first time in WEEKS. I'll get back on my discipline but tonight and tomorrow (for Valentine's) I'm totally having some sweet treats.
Any specific AMA concerns? Happy to report that my insurance totally covered my NT scan even though I already had done NIPT (there was some question that the insurance co would find those redundant), and that's more than likely because of AMA considerations (I think they did last time too, but that may have been because I had IF red flags on my file).
GTKY: What do you think is easier about having kids later in life? More difficult? Totally agree with @mkrel about living life to the fullest at different stages before baby. And I am very aware that because I'm older and more confident in so many aspects of life, I'm way less susceptible to mommy shaming/subtle competition/keeping up with the Joneses/etc., and I'm more relaxed about my little family just being my little family. I was talking with an old friend who had her daughter very young for our environment (we're mostly 30s-baby-havers, and she had her surprise at 19), and she spoke about constantly needing to prove herself and agonizing about everything being perfect because she needed to show she was a worthy mother despite being so young. I can't imagine living under such (admittedly self-imposed) scrutiny when parenthood is difficult anyway for anyone!
But on the flip side, I don't like seeing the limit of my fertile years just around the corner, and feeling like I may need to limit myself in how many children I have just because I started late. This is my second pregnancy and I don't think I'd hesitate for a minute in planning for a third if I were in my 20s or early 30s, but as it is it's very likely we will be a 2-children household.
To those of you that are 34, what does your doctor consider AMA?
Mine doesn’t classify until after 35. I am 33, but will be 34 when the baby is born. I feel like I’m advanced age, but maybe that’s because I had my first at 20, this sure was easier on the body back then!
@peachy0709 I'm sorry you're already having symptoms! You're totally right to want to get that checked out, and it's awesome that you're self-advocating for it! I took my fasting number this morning out of curiosity (and paranoia) and it was 83, so I'm going to enjoy the non-GD numbers for now.
@thirdtimesacharm2019 haha yeah I can imagine that after having a baby at 20 it will feel different at 33! But AMA doesn't kick in as a designation until 35 (or above) at delivery, so you're still categorized with the young ones And even that is a pretty conservative estimation--your risk numbers aren't that much higher at 35 or 36, it's more when you're heading into your 40s.
@thirdtimesacharm2019 I'll be 35 at delivery, which is why I'm considered AMA at my practice. I'm just riding the "But I'm still 34!" train as long as I can
@thirdtimesacharm2019 all my docs have considered 35 AMA. That being said I was 34 turned 35 when I was pregnant with my twins and am now 39... it was so much easier being pregnant when I was younger!

Rants/Raves?: Rant & Rave: my husband and I don’t usually give each other gifts for Valentine’s Day. In fact it’s been years. Normally we just got to dinner. Tonight my husband is working later so we can’t go out to dinner and I just came home and there’s a box on the counter. I opened it up and peaked inside and it’s jewelry. It’s the baby’s birthstone surrounded by diamonds for earrings and a heart necklace with a heartbeat sign in diamonds. And I didn’t get him anything. I feel like total and complete crap. This isn’t like him at all. I Had gotten him a present “just because” but it hasn’t come in yet that is a penny on a keychain and it has daddy established engraved on it and then that year of the penny 19 is circled and a heart. I Printed off a picture to give to him tonight but it just doesn’t compare. I feel horrible
Any specific AMA concerns? Nope
GTKY: What do you think is easier about having kids later in life? More difficult? Easier—I feel like I’m more knowledgeable about things. And I feel like I got to experience life. Harder—I’m set in my ways and routines. It’s going to be so hard not to be able to come home from work and lay on the couch and read or catch up on tv shows.
@purplg8r The biggest one for me is that I ate some candy (jelly beans) and within 30 minutes, I was faint, flushed and ready to vomit. One could say that's also morning sickness, but HOW faint I felt (if that makes sense) reminds me of when I had GD. I also since that day decided to try eating lower carb and I've felt significantly better. We're going to test at my next appointment, when I'll be 16w + 4d.
Fun fact: I could tell by 20 weeks I had GD with DD2 and DH kept saying "It's just pregnancy." Mama knows her body!!!
@purplg8r that is so damn sweet. don't feel bad, he wanted to surprise you. With all you guys have been through, I think its adorable. andplusalso you did something for him too, its just not here yet!
