Baby Names!

Re: Baby Names!

  • Help please!!

So we just found out that we are having a girl! My husband and I are pretty set on the name Quinn but our last name is also one syllable.
One, does it sound weird?? Two one syllable names together? For example, Quinn Smith or Quinn Doll.
Two, possible middle names? I'm thinking definitely more than one syllable for this one.  I love Quinn Penelope but DH is not so in love.  Others on the table are Quinn Marie and Quinn Hainsly but we'd love new ideas!

    Thanks everyone:)

  • @cee_mariee -- Hello! It's hard to tell whether two one-syllable names would sound weird together, without knowing the exact last name it's paired with. I don't think it sounds weird as a blanket rule, though. Quinn is cute... I don't know anyone with that name. I definitely think you can get some great feedback and ideas on that "Great Big Thread of Names" that dogmomma096 linked you to, so I will keep an eye out for your post there! Eager to see what others come up with.
  • Hi @oklahomak - thanks for the idea, I'll definitely spend some time in the introductions thread as well. It's just so large that it is overwhelming, but I guess you have to just dive in!

I'm certainly not encouraging rule breaking! I specifically urged her to post on the Baby Names thread that was linked above, said she'd get a lot of feedback and ideas there, and said I would look for her post. That's very clearly and deliberately promoting the proper structure. Extending a welcome and a quick engagement at the same time is merely a friendly gesture and doesn't hurt anyone.

No need for this post to derail into an extended argument about this. Happy Saturday to you and I hope you have a relaxing weekend!
  • I can't see how she is encouraging one off posts.  It's painfully obvious that one off posters do not read a single thread on the board, so this or other one off posts getting a few replies - being kind  or immediately snarky would have zero impact on deterring or encouraging the next one off poster.  I have been on the bump a few years (under a different username), and I like organization just as much as the next person, however I try to take the time now and again to respond but also direct similar to what was done above.  For me this appears to be differing opinions in reply style and singling out one person.  There have been numerous one off posts and some get plenty of replies and redirection to standard threads no one really complains.  I don't think we should be starting this bickering already between members.  We will have one off posts the entirety of our time on this board.  All we can do is redirect them and typically they never come back to check on it anyway.  I do not see a problem with kindness.  I will NEVER regret being kind.

  • @cee_mariee when are you due? I noticed you posted this same exact thing multiple times over in September, so inquiring minds and all....

@dogmomma096 To me it feels like all you took from my post was my last line.  I also dislike mass chaos, thats why I'm here.  We probably just have to disagree.  I believe that one off posters do not check a single post and rarely come back and check the responses they get. So all these replies back and forth mean nothing in regards of stopping future one offs bc one offs gonna do what they gonna do.  Our redirecting does however, teach new comers that do want to learn the format of the board, so that is a good outcome.  I just don't think singling out one person because someone doesn't like their reply style is fair or warranted.  lets all just move on a co-mingle together... we will be tight by the end of this journey, and I don't like seeing us starting off like this.  People against each other.  Members against each other.  If L&L wants to respond to one offs like she did above, let her.  Its her prerogative to put in that energy into a poster/troll thats never returning. She is not the problem.  We don't have that many one offs anyway - I haven't even had to unleash any good snarky gifs.  As a large group of women we are not going to like what every one says or how they say it all the time. Either we don't have anything nice to say about it so we STFU or we have logical, adult discussions (as we are now).  For me that is my goal.

We have already re-directed them enough to convince new comers this is not the way we do things - mission accomplished.

eta words bc the bump glitches

  • I don't think anyone is "breaking rules" posting a thread they didn't know actually existed.  This is a support group, I don't think there are necessarily "rules." Maybe some of you need to remember why we're all here.
  • @cee_mariee As a follow-up to @sourlemon's question, are you due in September? It seems all of your posts (sans the ones in this thread) are in that BMB. Did you start this thread here by accident or are you reaching out for more opinions on your names outside your BMB?

If interested, there is also a general Baby Names thread that's not tied to a specific BMB (although it may not be as active as the BMB threads). Link is here: https://forums.thebump.com/categories/baby-names
