@pizzaplz We saved a little bit with DD, and I was so worried we wouldn’t have enough to support baby and ourselves. But honestly, you learn to shift finances around a little. No Starbucks for a month (and you won’t want to go anywhere the first month or two)... our friends brought us dinners for the first few weeks. We had so many diapers from the baby shower we didn’t have to buy anything for about 2 months. It all ends up working out in the end. Try not to stress too much!
@pizzaplz I started putting aside 500$ a month in a savings account for DD when I got pregnant with her and just have a direct withdrawal from my acount into hers each month. We also put all the money gifts she gets for holidays, birthdays, etc in there. At 5 years old I'm pretty sure she has more money than I do:/ We also have a RESP (registered education savings plan) for her. Here the government will match 20% of your yearly contributions up to 2500$ until the child turns 18 so I also contribute 2500$ to this for her each year. I started this when she was born. I will do the same for this LO. I'm not worried about putting aside too much. I want to make sure that they will have everything they need if anything should happen to SO or I.
@jenniferjoy37 What you said is exactly my worry—that we won’t have enough to support both her and ourselves. Thanks for your thoughts—it helps to know others have been in this same place and made it out okay!
@Panaceia we’re doing similarly (minus the separate education account that the government contributes to—whaaat?!). I have a separate account for her with one of my banks and have been making monthly transfers. I’m not exactly a young mom, so I want to make sure she has what she needs should something happen, but I also want to make sure we’re taking care of ourselves financially so she won’t have to. It’s a lot to think about. I appreciate your perspective!
