NT/NIPT Discussion

Since many of us are approaching second tri (squeee!), we have many NT scans and NIPT draws coming up!

Use this thread to ask questions, share any results you are comfortable sharing (including the sex if you found out / want to share), or just to let us know when your upcoming appointments are and when you are expecting results!!

Re: NT/NIPT Discussion

  • Eeek!!! I love finding out the sex—not just of my baby but of everyone’s! It’s so sweet. I know, for me, I feel like I bond to the baby so much more once I know the sex and can feel them move around and stuff.

I did Counsyl on Monday and was really hoping to have results by Friday but it’s still processing and says the estimated date is Tuesday of next week. I’m so impatient, I just really want to know!

I think I’m also distracting myself because DS2 had some markers for trisomy defects at my 20 week ultrasound and I am nervous about that and focusing only on finding out the sex.

  • Are any of you doing/did you do the NIPT draw separate from a regular appointment? We just had an appointment yesterday and are at 9w2d, so just too early for the NIPT draw. Our next appointment isn't until Valentine's Day at 12 weeks for a full OB visit, so just wondering how everyone else was handling it!
  • @mkrel that is good to know!! It has been in processing all week and I am so frustrated. I just wanna knowwww!
  • @oklahomak I did. I had my first appointment/ultrasound on 1/8, and went back a week later just to draw blood for NIPT.

If any of you are under 35, did your doctor recommend it? I called the office and was just told that my doctor doesn't recommend it for patients under 35, and then if a patient still chooses to do the test, he does the Harmony test at 16 weeks.

@Lotus_2008 Congrats on your sweet boy!
  • @oklahomak mine did but only because with DS2, my level 2 ultrasound showed a few markers for abnormalities and they took me straight from the ultrasound room into the lab to do bloodwork for a ton of different things, including the MaterniT21, so they had me do it earlier just so I had it done in case that happened again.

    1. I think if you want it done, it is your pregnancy and you can advocate for yourself and should be able to do it as early as the test allows, but you will probably be responsible for the cost (my insurance covered because of my history). and 2. If you have to wait until 16 weeks I wouldn't do it because you will be responsible for the cost, and the ultrasound at that stage can typically pick up what the test screens for, and if you need it, they will have you do it at that time anyway. Especially if you're just doing it to find out the sex.
  • Also, I am loving finding out what everyone is having!! Right now, I keep fantasizing about another sweet little baby boy one moment and a sweet little baby girl the next. I am so so excited for all of you <3
  • @heml, @lilmamabebe3, @wabash15, @Lotus_2008 and @hey_clever_girl - Thank you all for your help!!!
  • @lilmamabebe3 Did you get your results today?!
  • My NIPT (the MaterniT21) test is scheduled for Wednesday (1/30), when I'll be 11w5d. My OB prefers to do a scan at 8 weeks to get an EDD and verify heartbeat ... and he had said I wouldn't get another scan until 16 weeks, when I have to go to MFM because I'm too ancient to be procreating  :D He normally schedules all ultrasounds on Thursdays so if I'm going in on Wednesday, I'm 100% sure I won't be get the NT then. TBH, I'm just hoping they're going to do a Doppler because I have yet to have a measured heart rate and it's stressing me out.

For those who had MaterniT21, what was the normal wait for results? I'm assuming 7-10 business days? I'm fine with waiting (once I hear the heartbeat again), but DH is driving me batty, doing research on Google.

  • We had our ultrasound and NIPT draw today.  Insurance only covers part of the NIPT so it's going to run us $200-250 bucks.

Our diagnostic testing places uses panorama through a lab called Natera.  Our genetic counselor says that some labs don't release the results until the doctor has seen them first.  Not sure if that's the cause of the delay for any of you.
  • @Twinkiedoll my doctor’s office also does Panorama through Natera! They won’t release the results directly to me through their portal; instead they send them to my doc who then releases them to me. I’m sure that can add a day or many!

I did my blood draw last Tuesday (1/22) so I’m hoping results will be in soon but I know it could even be a week more.
  • I am doing the first tri screening due to my DD1 having heart defects.  I am 13w4d and haven't had it done yet - is this weird?  I called and they said they would schedule it at my next appt which is Thursday 1/31.

  • @moon1417 some of the screening can be done at any time after 10 weeks. but if your wanting an NT scan then that needs to be done by the end of 13 weeks....

  • @wabash15   Thanks - I only want to know about the heart defects, so maybe that's why she isn't worried about scheduling - though I'm not entirely sure what indicators they look for/timing etc for heart defects.  I would have declined all screenings otherwise.  Getting baby's sex will be a nice bonus :)

  • @moon1417 they may look into scheduling you for an early anatomy scan or just a scan to look at the heart (They often do scans for IVF ladies to just look at the heart). I believe they generally wait till at least 16 weeks for that...

  • @moon1417 If you're doing the first trimester screening (NT scan), my doctor told me it has to be done between 11w and 13w6d so looks like they'll just fit it in.

  • @moon1417 are you having a fetal echo cardiogram? Mine is scheduled for 24 weeks.
    DD1 5/23/14, DD2 12/5/16   Baby #3 on the way!

  • @mamak225 @wabash15 I'm not entirely sure, she said it was going to be the first tri screening that does the NT - not sure they will be able to do it same day as my appt or schedule for a different day.  She just may not be too concerned about the timing bc I told her at first I wanted to skip it bc I am not interested in finding out about downs etc. until she said it does sometimes show indicators for heart defects too.  I guess I'll find out.

@sourlemon She said she would def be scheduling a fetal echo but it has not be scheduled yet. I'll have to ask her about it on Thursday!

  • We have our NT scan tomorrow and I’m so nervous. Trying to stay focused on work and not think about it, which I’m obviously failing at. Just need to know this little bean is okay!
  • Well, I was scheduled to have my NIPT drawn yesterday, but the lady at the front desk - his OB population is small compared to his GYN, it is just him - messed up and scheduled it on a date when the blood draw lady wasn't there :| That being said, I had to go back in this morning, but it's done.

He also warned me to make sure I schedule my next appt (at 15w6d) on a Thursday. It's not technically an ultrasound appointment, but that's the day his U/S tech is in so we could pop in a peek and check out baby "for fun" if I wanted to check out the anatomy ... which I was grateful for the suggestion. So I scheduled my next appt for the 28th. Hubs doesn't want to know the gender through the NIPT because he wants the "surprise" in the ultrasound, but I'm kind of thinking I would like to know ... mostly because my birthday is on the 25th and I think it would be a nice present to myself. It's only a few weeks difference, what do you think ... know or not know?

Also, heart rate (first time I've head it measured) was able to be detected by external doppler and was 164 (DD was 170). I don't believe in the old wives' tale because my sister had two girls: one was 170, the other was 155. I was soooooooo relieved to hear it, so I'm feeling much better after the anxiety I've been feeling the last 2+ weeks.
