I work in a laboratory and usually handle chemicals that are a big no no during pregnancy on a daily basis. So I had to tell my manager as soon as I found out (+- 6 weeks). Luckily she is a mom herself and is very supportive. She pulled me out of the lab immediately and now I'm doing mostly admin work.
I am in Canada as well and am very thankful for our paid 12-18 month maternity leave, job security for when I return and my job tops up my pay for the first 4 months. I feel for you American moms, you really deserve better and I am hoping to see change in your legislation around maternity leave. I have told two of my closest coworkers whom I consider friends and regularly work out with on lunch hour. I will tell my boss right before my first appointment (Dec 21- ill be 10 weeks) and then after Christmas/New Years I'll fill in the rest of my office. Unless I start to show really early (this is my second so that's possible) my goal is 12 weeks. Kinda around the same time/just before we make it all around public knowledge.
I am not telling anyone at work until the 2nd trimester, sometime in January (also depending on when I think my belly will give me away). That should still give them plenty of time for them to plan ahead.
I’m a nurse and told my manager and director right away. Mostly because they have been so supportive of my during the 2+ years of TTC but also because there are certain patients I cannot care for. I will let other co workers know in an as needed basis and will tell everyone after the 12 week mark.
Will be sharing at work in January after I hit 12 or 14 weeks. I’m a school psychologist and have some of the summer off but technically would be back to work by the time baby is due. No paid leave so I’ll be using all of my paid sick leave that I have accrued.
I’m a teacher in New Zealand so we only have two weeks until our 6 week summer holiday so I’ll tell after that, around 15 weeks. We get 22 weeks paid leave and a further 6 weeks for teachers and they have to hold our job for a year. I think I’ll take 18months though, I’m confident my boss will reemploy me but even if she can’t we have a teacher shortage so I’ll be able to find a new job easily.
Told my boss last week. I was nervous but he said he was very happy for me and that being a parent is the most important thing I'll ever do (he has four kids that he's very close to) and not to worry about work. I'm very lucky.
So um my main boss comes up to me IN FRONT OF my peer/co worker and asks me if I’m pregnant. It’s my second and I’ve got bloat like 12 weeks but I’m SO early (6+6). I was rather taken by surprise and turned red. I didn’t know how to react. We have a good relationship but she’s still my superior and I think crossed the line. I told her yes and that I had planned to keep it hush til my doc appointment end of December (at least 10-12 weeks). Now that I’ve thought about it all day I’m so annoyed. I believe it’s not legal (Canada) to ask your staff if they’re pregnant until they’re ready to tell. She’s not even my HR contact. I may give it the weekend and tell her Monday that I woulda appreciated she come to me in private. What would y’all do?
I love my boss dearly but if she did that to me I would be in HR so fast because that is way inappropriate! I'm really sorry that she did that to you! Honestly it's too bad you didn't say something about just gaining holiday weight and being very insulted but that's just me with my sarcastic sense of humor! At the least it's probably best you took the weekend to compose yourself. if you are close to your boss talk with her first about her massive error. If it doesn't go well go to HR. IMO
Thanks to those who replied about my boss situation I disclosed above. I have not been able to speak with her about it yet since I was off sick half of last week and now she is. I've talked with some friends/family who are also in managerial positions and they all agree the line was majorly crossed. Even if we have a friendly relationship. I hope to mention something later this week when she's back. In the meantime I made it clear that she's not to discuss with any one else until I give the go ahead.
I told my boss at the end of last week and I swear he’s more excited than I am. I’ve been telling others at work on a need-to-know basis, eg explaining why I can’t commit to doing something at the end of July, or explaining why I’m looking like death warmed up and need to reschedule all meetings to the conference room closest to the bathroom. Fun times. Everyone’s been super supportive and excited. I’ve got about half a dozen offers to babysit already
I’ve been telling people at my work (three so far) on a need-to-know basis as well. I had to miss a few days of work, and it started to look fishy when I was avoiding mornings (I’m an independent contractor, make my own schedule). Hopefully everything will work out, I am nervous to tell everyone in case something happens, but that might happen today. We have our monthly staff meeting, and when I don’t order a margarita (we go to a restaurant) it will be obvious most likely. Lol
I work remotely so thankfully I don't have to worry about showing giving me away. It has also been a godsend based on how crappy I have been feeling. I would have had to take medical leave if I had to commute physically to an office these past 4 weeks. I plan to announce to work after the new year, once all my friends and family are told. I have some big projects due in July and air travel late in the spring that will probably have to be reassigned, so I want to give as much notice as possible.
We have our Executive Director's retirement party/office holiday party. They picked a very fancy restaurant with a bar. Appetizers include lots of yummy soft cheeses and seafood.

I don't work remotely, but I sit in an office alone, so I can suffer in silence. I don't know how you teachers and nurses and anyone else that has to be on their feet and in front of people do it!
