It's been a month since the last check-in and if you are like me, with the colder weather setting in- there is a lot more TV watching and book readng going on. So tell us, what are you watching, reading, and listening to?
Thank you for those who suggested Manifest. DH and I started it and actually have gotten pretty into it. Its' a great combination of supernatural mystery, law procedure, and medical drama all in one.
So I started the Romanoffs on Amazon Prime and I am hoping someone else has watched this show. I can't decide if it's godawful or the most gorgeous show on TV. Basically, it's a series of vignettes about unrelated descendants of the Romanov family (the Russian royal family that was executed during the Russian revolution). Each episode is a fictionalized story about a different descendant and some of them are just awful and dumb, but the settings are so gorgeous and the plots are so weird that I can't stop watching.
I just started the Looming Tower- can't decide whether I like it or not. Only watched the first episode and I am little turned off by Jeff Daniel's character.
I am listening to Michelle Obama's book Becoming on my commute. It's so so so good.HIghly recommend it, though I am a big Obama-phile so that may be part of reason I like it so much. Hearing the story of their relationship from her perspective is just so interesting.
And I cannot wait for Mrs Maisel to come back this week! Anyone else watching things that they love?
I recently found the show, A Million Little Things, so good but also deals with some really tough topics so sad as well. Still watching This is Us and New Amsterdam. I haven’t had time to read at all.
Ivy: July 2010 | Stella: Dec 2012 | BFP#3: MMC at 11Wk's, July 2017 | Wyatt: April 2019 | BFP#5: Twin Girls due Sept 2020
I just got Even Cowgirls Get the Blues by Tom Robbins. I've heard he's a really good author, so I'm trying it out! Sad it's an audiobook though, but that's the only way I'll get it read.
@chloe97 I loved the first season of Mrs. Maisel and can't wait for the next season on Wednesday! We've also been plowing through the Great British Bake Show on Netflix, too.
I've been interested in Michelle Obama's book, but am trying not to spend too much on new books. DH read tons of books and I have stuff he hasn't read, so we've switched kindels for a bit. But I have to admit that I miss reading from the Kindle app on my phone We read lots of scifi/fantasy type stuff so to be honest, I don't even know who I'm reading right now. I did see Brandon Sanderson (if you like scifi/fantasy) just came out with a new book and I love his writing. I'm tempted to buy it. I've also occasionally been working through Ron Chernow's Grant biography It's really good, but also pretty long, so I sometimes have to break it up.
@sleepy33 I love the stormlight archive!! I just did the same thing when Oathbringer (book 3) came out! I love that series so much and everything he's written! I first was introduced to him through the wheel of time series and then I read his mistborn series. I definitely haven't read everything but have read a lot of his stuff. He turns out so much!
@knarlytaurus I'm a huge Sanderson fan, and actually had read Mistborn before he finished WOT, so I was super stoked for him to finish it. I thought he did a great job with it. He and Rothfuss are my most favorite fantasy authors.
@robyn2201 I have heard good things about A Million Little Things too! I need to check it out. @knarlytaurus and @ElleJDubs I actually think I would like OUtlander- historical drama is totally up my alley. I just need DH to go out more so I can binge more TV shows alone, b/c I don't think he would get into that one. Maybe though.
Does anyone watch Call the Midwife? I have heard that is sooo good, but I am a bit worried about being triggered by sad baby loss/traumatic birth stories. It may have to wait for postpartum binging when I am up at 4 am with LO.
@wishiwaspreggo I am just getting over an awful cold, so I can relate. Pregnancy colds are a bitch and a half. My favorite are the sites that tell you to focus on prevention, as if you can just not have to care for your sick child. I know your son is older, but DD regular sneezes right in my face or puts her fingers in my mouth and there is just nothing you can do about that.
@sleepy33 I don't know Rothfuss but I'm sure my DH does, lol. He goes through books like water and had read so many different authors. I'll ask him about Rothfuss when he gets home...
@chloe97 my husband goes away a lot, is getting his Masters online and has a second job lol. I have too much TV alone time! That's the reason I'm not up to date on manifest and this is us bc he watches those with me!
@knarlytaurus@chloe97 Good to know that the next season of Mrs Maisel is coming out so soon. I loved the first season and watched the entire thing in like a week!
Ivy: July 2010 | Stella: Dec 2012 | BFP#3: MMC at 11Wk's, July 2017 | Wyatt: April 2019 | BFP#5: Twin Girls due Sept 2020
@chloe97 CTM is sooo so good, but it's definitely very emotional. I cry at every episode even when not pregnant, though to my memory, there actually isn't too much infant loss that I can recall. But there are just a lot of very emotional situations obviously involving child birth. Waiting might be best.
@chloe97 - That's exactly the problem. We took our son to Disney and, while I was hyper-vigilant about keeping my hands washed (I swear, 75% of the park attendees were sneezing, coughing, or sniffling) I didn't do the same for my son He developed a cold and I just KNEW I was next. There's literally nothing I can do about it. He's almost 4 and he still sneezes in my face, sticks his germy fingers in my mouth, nose, and ears, and takes my sleeve and wipes his snot on it. It's so much fun.
Kid is going to have to wear a Hazmat suit for the first year of the twins' lives!
ETA: When he was about 10 months old he grabbed a handful of hair on either side of my head and sneezed 4 times RIGHT in my face. I swore to myself when he's 13 I'm gonna do the same thing to him and get my revenge
I am currently re-watching Orphan Black on Amazon Prime. We gave up cable so I haven't seen the last season yet, but want to reacquaint myself with the early episodes. Also watching episodes of Friends or How I Met Your Mother, here and there.
I am slowly reading the newest Brene Brown book and waiting for a few others (including the new Michelle Obama one) thru the library.
ETA: When he was about 10 months old he grabbed a handful of hair on either side of my head and sneezed 4 times RIGHT in my face. I swore to myself when he's 13 I'm gonna do the same thing to him and get my revenge
OMg that is so gross and yet so hilarious at the same time. I hope you feel better soon.
I started reading a YAL series called Arc of a Scythe on a recommendation from one of my students -- actually I mentioned last year that I had started the first book, but then my library loan ended and I didn't finish it. The kid, who is pretty quiet, aggressively loaned me the second book after he finished it, so I figured I'd better actually read it, so I went back and finished the first and I'm on the second one now. It's pretty interesting -- futuristic society that has eliminated death, so people have the job of being a "scythe" (grim reaper) to help quell population growth.
I started catching up on Modern Family cause I just found out my Echo Show can play Hulu while I'm in the kitchen now. I'm intrigued by the most recent episode. I can't tell if it's going to be good or if it's jumping the shark.
@brie_and_almonds completely agree about the Modern Family twist. I feel like that show has gotten boring in recent years though, so even though I am not sure about it- it does make me actually look forward to watching the new episode.
@robyn2201 We're watching A Million Little Things. We binged it the day after Thanksgiving so now I feel like it's moving slowly. Also, just finished episode 3 of New Amsterdam last night so we'll see if it's good.
Going to the Bahamas for Christmas and I wanted to get a book about babies. I'm mostly interested in logistics ... How to get them on a sleep schedule, what to feed them when, how to regulate their temperatures, and other dos and donts. Any recommendations?
@missmcgonnagal I loved Harvey Karp's Happiest Baby on the Block. It's the 5 S's which our pediatrician referenced in various conversations with us at the beginning. There are definitely some cult strategies (edited to clarify - cult strategies with books - my last BMB seemed to have every sleep training book work great for a few and not for the rest) but we had good luck with that book and didn't do any of the others. Now that DD is older (15 months), there's a few other books I want to read more about development.
@brie_and_almonds oh, if your student likes that, they should check out the Unwind series. Similar futuristic science stuff where they have taught a Second civil war on reproductive rights and parents can get rid of problem teenagers by having them “unwound”. Super good!
I've been off TV which is actually working really well for DH and I. He likes grittier shows and movies, things like The Last Kingdom and low budget sci fi. So, he's getting to watch his terrible TV; I'm reading so much more.
I am coming in woefully under my Goodreads challenge this year. I need to read 19 more books before the end of the year if I'm going to make it. Obviously, I'm not. But, in the past couple weeks, I have read:
The Iron Trial by Holly Black and Cassandra Clare (2 stars) Cleopatra in Space #1 by Mike Maihack (graphic novel - 4 stars) Agony House by Cherie Priest (4 stars) Serafina and the Black Cloak by Robert Beatty (audiobook - 5 stars) Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur by Amy Reeder (graphic novel - 3 stars) So Much Love by Rebecca Rosenblum (4 stars) The Wrong Cat by Lorna Crozier (poetry collection - 4 stars)
Currently on the go:
Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs (almost done! 4.5 stars) The Map to Everywhere by Carrie Ryan (only just started - no rating yet) I’m Still Here: Black Dignity in a World Made For Whiteness by Austin Channing Brown
DD1: June 2014 - VBM4lyfe DD2: October 2016 DC3: coming May 2019
Great thread. I watch nearly everything on Bravo, so Real Housewives of every city, Vanderpump Rules you name it I watch it. I also watch This is us, A million little things, The Connors, Modern Family, Murphy Brown, Will and Grace, Big Bang Theory, Dateline, 60 Minutes, Jeopardy etc.
I also read a lot. I set a challenge for myself on goodreads this year and I crushed it by June. My challenge was to read 20 books this year, I have read 40, and am currently reading three books. 2 of them are nonfiction and kind of heavy with facts that it takes me longer to read because I highlight and take notes I also bought those books so can read them when I have time whereas my other books are from the library and I have a strict two week window to read so I usually put the other two aside to read the one with the time limit. I have one Historical Fiction that I started yesterday, and will probably finish by Thursday. Currently I am reading:
Fear by Bob Woodward The Coddling of the American Mind by Gregg Lukisnoof The Masterpiece by Fiona Davis
@SpaceBurger yuup. It's a relatively new thing I think. I just found out when we bought one for MIL on Black Friday. Game changer for my entertainment while making dinner for sure.
I just started reading Expecting Better by Emily Oster (updated version). She's a professor of economics and speaks about how for her first pregnancy she was frustrated by the lack of data behind pregnancy recomendations by providers and how different people have conflicting advice. She goes back to the actual studies and analyzes the actual study methodologies and what can be inferred, etc. It's been pretty interesting read so far.
@knarlytaurus I read that right before we started trying this time. It was an interesting read. If you like it, Science of Mom is kind of similar although focuses on a broader topic of things not just specific to pregnancy, although includes some pregnancy stuff (drinking while pregnant overlaps, but then there's delayed cord clamping, vaccines, breastfeeding, etc.). I got the audiobook and listened to it on my morning walks when I had to stop running in the 3rd trimester. I love that type of stuff. Cribsheet comes out in April from Emily Oster which I think will be interesting - and perfect timing although as a STM I'm probably less overwhelmed by the idea of a newborn but still love data.
Hm. I may read about delayed cord clamping. I'm not really wanting a book, but if you have any good articles? @kvh22 I'm also trying to find articles against it. I really don't think we're going to do it again because we had a bad experience, but there are SO many differing opinions on whether our experience was due to DCC or not. It's very interesting. And then it's a different baby too, so he may actually benefit while it wasn't beneficial to DS. But do I risk that? 😩 So many decisions. But any articles you have for or against, I'd love to read.
I've been watching OITNB and loving it. I've previously binged the first 3 seasons a while ago but then didn't watch s4 and on when they came out just out of laziness. Hoping it continues being good!
I'm sure we have some GoT fans here? I'm so excited for April and think I'll probably rewatch S6 and S7 before it starts up again. I rewatched the whole series last year before S7 started and forgot how slow and forgettable some of those early episodes are. Can definitely do without rewatching those again. We'll have to have a weekly thread come April - we'll be so close to our due dates!

@peachy13 will you rewatch them with my husband for me? I'm just not into rewatching before every new season and he's desperate to. We go to bed at the same time so he doesn't really have the opportunity to watch without me and it's such a commitment!
@eatinwatermelonseeds I actually didn't do a ton of research but the net net of the section of the book was there were no negative outcomes associated with delayed cord clamping as long as it's safe to do it. I'm curious about your experience with it. It's standard for my doctor/hospital to do it unless there's meconium or something else requiring fast intervention. Meconium was the main one mentioned in my birthing class so when my water broke at home and I could tell there was meconium, I was disappointed I wouldn't get to do it as I got slightly anemic towards the end of pregnancy and it can give an additional month or two (or three) of iron reserves. The book Science of Mom was actually inspired by the woman's blog so here's her post on it: https://scienceofmom.com/2012/10/11/why-consider-delayed-cord-clamping/ (note that it's from 2012 so there's probably more research done since as it becomes standard protocol but there's "Other resources" and "references" at the bottom of the post).
@kvh22 there are other "possibly associated complications" such as polycythemia and hyperbilirubinemia, also respiratory distress (but this was not experienced by DS until he was 4 months old, so I'm guessing completely unrelated). He did have polycythemia, or increased red blood cells (which would've been a bigger deal if there were antibodies present as my blood that passed through the cord could've attacked his, according to the pediatrician, but luckily wasn't the case) and hyperbilirubinemia, or jaundice. Now, of course jaundice is a very very common thing after birth. However, his was very high and got high very quickly. They monitored it going from 9 to 14 and then assured me they don't have any concerns for brain damage or need for transfusion until it reaches 20+ and that there was no way his would by 8am the next morning. The next morning it was 24. They admitted us immediately and he was put on lights, no diaper and I couldn't nurse or hold him for 5 hours. If his numbers had not gone down at that point, he would've needed a blood transfusion. Luckily his improved and we were able to go home 24 hours later.
None of this was immediately or became life threatening, however the stress was unbelievable and I really question if it's worth the risk of going through that again. My midwife and some readings suggested that was not related. However the 7 doctors who stood in front of me (attending with his interns) and literally fucking laughed in my face when I said that believed it was directly related.
Currently listening: In the Dark Season 2 podcast (recommended by some top podcasts of 2018 list). ETA - It's about a man who was tried for the same murder 6 times. He's won appeal 6 times, but you're allowed to be re-tried for a crime, as long as you weren't acquitted.
Currently watching: GBBS. Just finished the 2 newest seasons, but I haven't watched any of the older ones, so I can go back and hit those up.
@SpaceBurger I was introduced to Tom Robbins through Jitterbug Perfume. Not sure if you've read that one, but I vaguely remember enjoying it. Unless it sucks. Then forget I ever said that.
@eatinwatermelonseeds super interesting. The article I linked talked about those things (similar to what you said about other articles not finding a relationship). It'd be hard to disassociate them, I imagine, given your experience with DS1, though.
