Let's talk nurseries

  • @megsb615 dark colors can be cute with a girls nursery too! Pink and brown complement eachother very well and you can easily add frilly accents. It can really pop!

  • @kvh22 I’m a very capabale person, but I’m not very “handy”, and my “trying to help” was more getting in the way I believe. 😂 He could always get his brother or one of our dads to help though!

@lappymom2019 True. That’s a very good point too!
  • @megsb615 if you do want to paint it, I can say it's doable! I painted a Jenny Lind crib (so, all bumpy, with lots of detail) before DD1 was born and it turned out beautifully. It was a lot of work - something like 2 coats of paint and 3 coats of varnish. But I still love the result.

  • Painting furniture is a huge project. I painted two dressers for the nursery and it was a painstaking process. I can't imagine trying to complete that while pregnant but if you have the energy and the wood quality will support the paint, then go for it!
  • @megsb615 personally I would do it but I'm also crazy  :D  The only reason I didn't really want to paint anything is because we live in an apartment building and I have no outdoor space to do it but don't want fumes inside. We lucked out with getting the other free one...though it needs some TLC for sure.

  • @Sketner610 That looks beautiful!
  • We’ll be moving DS into his big boy room before baby comes, so everything will stay the same. It’s woodland creature themed, mostly navy and grey. I plan on just adding some blush accents if this one is a girl. We were pretty minimalist with decor, so it would be easy to add.
  • So, this isn't a nursery idea, but I got the coolest idea that my husband is totally going to say no to 😂 my son is super into Pokemon and I just thought it would be so could to paint the top half of his room red and the bottom white with a black stripe in the middle so it looks like a Pokeball. Anyone wanna take votes on how quick my husband shoots down my idea? 😂
  • @eatinwatermelonseeds it’s only paint, so it’s not like it’s particularly difficult or expensive to change when he outgrows it.  I hope YH isn’t too quick to shoot it down.  FWIW, MH painted his basement “man cave” tv/rec room in our first house (before kids) in the Calgary Flames colours and decked the room in sports memorabilia.  We just painted over it when it came time to list the house.  But be forewarned, red SUCKS to paint over, so be prepared to do a couple coats of primer and then 3 coats of paint to cover it 😂

  • @mcewen3 oh, I know. This was our first apartment (and the first picture we ever took together) and I have no clue what we were thinking. We look like babies 😭
  • @k2k2tog A white Jenny Lind crib is exactly what I want for a girl! I bet that was super tedious to paint though! I know I wouldn’t have the patience to do that. 😂

@DuchessOfCambridge I’m somewhat hoping I stumble across one in our local b/s/t group that is a good price. Then husband won’t have to worry about putting it together, and I won’t mess it up trying to paint it. I’m not very crafty by the way. Haha

@Sketner610 Thank you for the picture! That’s also pretty, and it helps being able to visualize it! I’m so use to seeing it in my son’s room that it’s hard to imagine it for a girl.
  • @megsb615 check on Facebook to see if you have a local "Buy Nothing" group, they are all over the country and it's people gifting things to each other. I've gotten two changing tables for free that way and also gotten rid of a lot of stuff that's clutter to me but useful to others! I've also seen strollers being given away and once a pair of Jimmy Choo pumps 😮

  • I've also gotten random toys from there and people let me borrow specific toys for DS that helped with his therapy. A bunch of people lent me beverage dispensers for his birthday party too! It's like my new favorite group haha

  • @DuchessOfCambridge I’ll have to look for one of those groups! That’d be amazing!

@poshspice That picture is gorgeous! 😍 Also really love the idea of pink and gold accents. I’ll have to try to look on Pinterest for more ideas with a brown crib! Thank you!
  • @poshspice that nursery is what dreams are made of 😍

@lappymom2019 A woodland theme would be really cute!

@beccaneu I didn’t do a theme with DS because I’m indecisive and couldn’t decide on anything. I just went with a color theme of light blue and gray, and I liked the simplicity of it. I doubt I’ll do a theme this time around either. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Someone convince me that a dark brown crib and dresser will still be cute for a girl and not “too boyish”. I just always pictured having a white crib in a girl nursery, but I realize it’s a waste of money when we could just use DS’ since he refuses to sleep in it. Anyone using a dark brown crib in their girl’s nursery?
    You could paint it white
  • @megsb615 I looked for a picture of the pink and gold that I had in mind, but couldn't find exactly what I was envisioning. I strongly considered pink and gold for DD's room before I settled on beachy/mermaids. Anyway, I did find this, and the actual decor is a bit much, but I really love the color scheme. There's a website called Project Nursery that you can browse for nursery ideas, too. I forgot I used it a lot when I was planning DD's room.

  • @Mehand2 I could paint it, but I’m not crafty, so it’d probably look terrible. Then I’d have no crib at all. I’d rather not chance it. Haha

@poshspice Thats pretty too! I do love the idea of pink and gold. I’ll have to check out that website. That will be perfect! So helpful!
  • @megsb615 I don't think of dark brown furniture as being "boyish" at all. I don't consider white furniture to be girly, either. Our crib, which we bought 5 years ago for DS1, is dark brown; we would have used it for any future kids whether they were boys or girls (they just happened to both be boys, too). There have been some great examples posted of color combinations that work with brown (chocolate/pink is a beautiful and classy pairing if you're looking for something that screams girl), but I honestly think most anything could look good. I have mostly greens and yellows in my nursery and both brown and white furniture, and I don't think a baby girl would look out of place!

  • Very excited for our nursery. Hubs finished painting this week (moss green with white trim and light maple floors) so we start to put together the light stained poplar furniture tomorrow. I'll decorate this winter while hubs is away for work, and so I'm scouring for Around The World/Jules Vern adventure theme art now. We are going to hang the chessboard my FIL made as wall decor and I'm thinking of getting a photo of Nellie Bly to put in there too.

All in all our nursery will have the convertible crib, chest of drawers, changing topper, rocker and ottoman, and nightstand. It also has a small closet, and the large back wall will have a giant decal of an antique map.

@missmcgonnagal you'll have to share a picture when you're done!
  • I'm thinking about light grey walls with accents of bright pink and maybe aqua. I can't really think of a particular theme that I like, I did see some cute chevron themes though. Floors will be hardwood (have to pick those out too as there is a gross carpet in that room currently). I am getting stuck on what color furniture, I really like the dark grey furniture but I don't know if it would be too much with grey walls. I also like white furniture (but worry that it will get dirty) and the dark brown furniture. I have attached some pics I found off of Pinterest in the spoiler.

  • @MelissaMay82 I like white or black furniture, personally. Seems like two extremes but it depends on other colors in the room.

  • @MelissaMay82 we have white furniture with black trim/hardware and it does not get dirty (DD is 15 months).

  • @MelissaMay82 I like the dark grey crib with the light grey walls, but that's just me. We just ordered a light grey crib.

  • @MelissaMay82 I like all of them  The dark grey is my favorite, I don't think it's an overpowering amount of grey even with the walls. Then I like the white and the brown is my least favorite. We also have white nursery furniture and it hasn't gotten dirty.

  • We’re not really doing a nursery. We have a large master suite and both boys will be in our room. Atticus will be in our Target crib (Simmons Kids Monterrey Crib in rustic white) and DS is getting an extendable IKEA bed. Our master has gray walls and we have white bedding, boys will both have navy blue bedding. We had decided on navy blue and white whether it was a boy or girl.
  • @ashleaf2018 Atticus? Omg, how adorable!
