Re: High Risk/Gestational Diabetes/PreE/Etc.

  • @tosh24 I feel like my whole face gets fat when I'm pregnant. My mom says my lips get bigger but I think it's an all the time thing not changing during the day. I haven't heard of that being a symptom of anything but an allergic reaction though.

  • Hey guys...Happy Wednesday! I was too exhausted mentally and physically yesterday to be able to update.

Yesterdays appointments took 5 hours between the two and I had my 4yo with me so that was a joy. Thankfully he's great with a tablet, but I sure paid for that when we left. We got stuck in traffic which made the 1.5 hour trip 2 hours and I still had to go the pharmacy and figure out the insulin. So, it was like 9pm by the time we got home. DH had a football coaches meeting an hour away so he didn't get home until 11pm and I was passed out by then.

Saw a different High risk doctor yesterday, don't know why...the appointment was made with mine? I don't mind really, except that he didn't know anything about anything I'd been doing. Wasn't going to put me on insulin, etc.which was the whole purpose of that appointment. So, they did an ultrasound that they weren't supposed to do because my regular OB is doing them (cheaper....high risk is through the hospital). Then he wrote the scripts for the insulin and wrote "pharmacist to counsel" on it. I took them to Walgreens last night and the pharmacist goes...we don't do this? So, my good friend and school nurse came to my rescue. She has 15 year in labor and delivery under her belt so I trust her.

Went to second appointment with the regular OB. Did the BPP (which apparently I learned is different from an NST) and baby boy scored a 10/10 thankfully. My blood pressure was high at 140/75 which I think personally was from the anxiety over the insulin discussion at the first appointment. He's measuring 2 weeks ahead size wise in his head and abdomen, but his limbs are on track. So, he will be like his brother I suppose. He gained 2lbs in 3 weeks, which they said is more than he should have. If this trend continues they're expecting him to be close to 10lbs. Hopefully the insulin works I guess?

My OB doubled my anxiety meds, but that will take 4-5 weeks to fully take effect which times up with his arrival almost so that's good. Hopefully it will keep the PPD I had with DS at bay, because that was terrible. He also told me to take unisom for sleep because I haven't been sleeping well. I took that last night and it did help me go to sleep, but made me feel drunk-ish most of the morning? It did not help me stay asleep. I still woke up in pain from my hips all night. The OB said with as low as he is (he's bee on the cervix since 26 weeks) and the size of his head, there's not a lot to do about that.

SO....I had 3 solid panic attacks yesterday from the anxiety of the shots. They are 4x a day. It's a lot. I know that it's not that big of a deal in the grand scheme of life, but my needle anxiety/phobia is legit and after it's done, I throw up. I'm so ready for all of this to be done and behind me.

    Not too much longer now.

  • @oaklandava ugh I hate marathon appointment days just trying to entertain myself let alone a 4 year old! Is the difference between the BPP and the NST just that they also do the ultrasound with the BPP to check fluid levels, heartbeat, blood flow, etc?
  • @oaklandava wow, you had a long day. Sorry you had to deal with the insulin teaching mix-up...that would have been stressful. And having to entertain your 4 yo for that long....geez, I can't even imagine why you were so exhausted last night... :s Hopefully giving yourself the shots becomes easier as you do it - I know when I went through IVF I had such anxiety about the needles but by end of it, it was NBD :)

  • Well. Had my 32 week appointment yesterday. The first BP reading at the OB’s office was really high, which kinda makes me feel like I failed the whole appointment and is sending me spiraling down the path of end of pregnancy suckage that I had to deal with last time. Next appointment with Kaiser isn’t “supposed” to be until 36 weeks except now it has to be at 34 weeks and must be with an MD not a NMW. Which basically means I’m officially  high risk again.

I also have to go back on Friday for a BP check with the nurse. AND I have to check it daily and call L&D if it is over 140/90 (either number), which will result in me having to go in for monitoring, fluid check, labs, etc. AND I have to email my OB weekly with what my numbers have been for that week. Sigh. That is lower than my threshold was last time, and I’m just feeling like it will inevitably happen. Multiple times.

At least I took longer to have this problem this time? And as I told H, we at least know that if I have to be induced early that it worked out okay last time, so odds of a successful early induction would be higher this time. I think that’s how that works at least?

  • @KLS123 yeah I think that's the only difference. A NST score is out of 8 and a BPP Is out of 10 so there are two more markers?
@tosh24 I am sorry :( I know I seem like a baby when people have to go through so much to have babies and I have a stupid phobia that gets in my way. It's no big deal in the world scheme but I just suck lol
@MrsDho11 were you stressed out for any reason? I know you had this issue before, but yesterday they told me too that your stress level affects it (which I am sure you know). Are you worried about your pressure readings and thus it's making them creep up as you get to the end? total speculation, you can slap me if you want lol Praying for you girl

  • Insulin works....it crashed my sugar to 43. That was a new feeling I don't think I've ever had before. Shaking, sweating, dizzy, that was scary. Anybody with GD have any secrets to keep from feeling like death the rest of the day once you get it back up?

  • @oaklandava that marathon of appointments and pharmacy mix up sounds awful. I’m sorry you had to deal with that! And then with your blood sugar crashing that low... yikes! No advice from personal experience (mine goes freakishly high but never that low) but I know whenever my dad’s gets that low the only thing that helps is rest. Probably not helpful to hear if you’ve got a 4 year old at home though...

@MrsDho11 ugh... BP issues suck. Hopefully you were just more stressed than usual at that appointment and your subsequent numbers look good.

@MrsDho11 I’m sorry you are having blood pressure issues.

@oaklandava That sounds like a long, stressful day. It’s so frustrating when you go in for a doctors appointment and the doctor doesn’t know what’s going on.

I also had a needle phobia and for me it’s gotten better as I’ve gotten used to the shots, it took a little while though. Hopefully increasing your anxiety meds helps. They increased mine when I was in the hospital and I noticed a difference fairly quickly.

The only thing that makes me feel better after a low like that is a nap, which isn’t always possible. :( Hopefully they are able to help you get the dosing worked out so you don’t have that happen again. Lows feel awful.

Yay! Great news @KLS123!!! I hope baby continues to grow well and it's smooth sailing from here. So awesome that you can transfer back to your midwife!

@pttomato Great update! It must make all of your restrictions feel a teeny bit more bearable when you have an end date in sight. You have come so far already, now you're in the home stretch!

  • @oaklandava my grandfather passed on Monday, so sad but not feeling particularly stressed per se. I’m monitoring at home now, and I’d say my numbers seem to be solidly up though haven’t been regularly over the threshold or anything. Go in for my BP test with the nurse in a few hours, and I should know more about what the plan is going to be for the next couple weeks after that.

  • @kls123 Awesome news! The thought of being induced early was giving me some anxiety as well.
@MrsDho11 Sounds like we are similar situations, glad you passed! I always ask them to let me sit for 5 minutes relaxing before they take it and they usually oblige :)

I had my first NST yesterday, which baby passed with flying colors, but my blood pressure is still creeping up with not a lot of symptoms. I go back on Monday and Tuesday of next week and they said to expect to be induced next week (I'm 36 weeks on Sunday, so its not super early). Anyone have experience with being on magnesium during labor? From what I've read on the internet, its kind of freaking me out.
  • @kerryann124 wow next week! I can't believe we are all so far along already...December totally snuck up on me. Well that's good news that LO is doing so well on the NST. I'll be thinking of you and hoping for a smooth and successful induction.
  • @kerryann124 WOWWWW! are you freaking out??! I am super stoked to be 5 weeks out from c section (though selfish reasons I wish it would be sooner) as it is, but to know it was next week I would be beside myself with excitement. Super glad that baby is doing so great on the NST's. Keep us posted!!

  • @kerryann124 I was on magnesium during my induction and I wouldn't say it was easy by any stretch of the imagination. It made me really hot and my nurse brought me a small fan that I could clip on the hospital bed that helped. Don't be too freaked out by what you read online, everyone reacts differently. My sister didn't have some of the side effects that I did and vice versa. Let me know if you have any questions! Good luck with your appointments next week.
  • My BPs over the weekend and my first today were less than stellar, so I sent them over to my OB early. Now i have two BP appointments this week, my OB appointment next week, and another BP appointment next week. Happy to be having a close eye kept on us at least.

  • Yes, I'm very anxious/excited. I passed my NST again yesterday so baby is still in there for now :) I have another appointment today and then Thursday. I'm kind of bummed this isn't really how I wanted the whole birth experience to go down, but thankful I have made it this far. Hoping to avoid the NICU since I'll be between 36 and 37 weeks.
@jgil85 Thanks for the advice on the magnesium. I was hoping to be able to walk around a bit, but it doesn't sound like that may be possible on magnesium. Also, did it affect the baby at all? That is another concern I have...

  • BP check today wasn’t good, so I had to get the NST. Took 45 minutes, but eventually passed that and their quick urine dip, so I got
    to go home another day.

  • Well good news and bad news. Good news is my BP is holding steady and pre-e labs came back clean. Bad news is I've put on 5 lbs in between appointments (twice now) and it seems to be mostly swelling. That was warning sign #1 with DS. I'm now measuring 5 weeks ahead so we have a growth scan on the 13th and I see my OB the 17th to discuss plans/options. Anything over 140/90 my OB wants me to call and with my weight creeping up she wants me to keep a close eye on symptoms.

  • @ladystout08  I gained 5lbs this week too and it was all swelling. It's got me nervous because it didn't happen with DS1. All my tests and stuff were clean too but I'm a little nervous.

Update from today....They scheduled my repeat c-section for 1/15, which is only 4 days before my due date. I was told originally I wouldn't be allowed past 38 weeks because of the GD that's been uncontrolled, but now it's 1/15. I'm confused. The insulin hasn't really helped my blood sugar numbers so far so I guess we will see how that all progresses. He passed his BPP today again with a 10/10 so that's good!

  • @kerryann124 I was not really able to walk around at all. I only got up to go to the bathroom once on magnesium and it was terrible. I was so dizzy and it made me feel l like the drunkest I've ever been. Ds had to be on an iv after delivery because of the magnesium but I don't know that he had any lasting effects from it.
  • Have any of the small baby mamas been told what baby is weighing at?
  • @kbeau1996 yes they tell me the estimated weight and what percentile that falls in for the week each time I do the growth scan. You should also ask for the individual measurements as well that goes into that calculation.
For example, my baby's head, arm length and leg length all measure on the small but normal scale but the abdominal circumference is well below and brings my overall average percentile way down.
  • Went in for my regular appointment with my dr this morning. I'm 32 weeks 5days.  He took my BP said it was high, checked my urine then had me relax and retook my blood pressure still high so he sent me straight to the hospital.  My blood pressure at the hospital was 170/90 - yikes!  Numerous tests all day, urine, blood, NST, biophysical profile.  I have sudden onset pre-eclampsia with no previous symptoms.

They are trying to control it with medication,  I am being given steroids for babys lungs to develop and I'm in the hospital until it's time for baby to come.
Which they are making it sound could be anyday but they are trying to keep baby in until 34 weeks if we can.

Good news is placenta previa has completely resolved so i will be able to have induced vaginal delivery.

It's been a long day and still trying to absorb all the information.

  • Hello! This is my first post. I’m 35 weeks, 43-years-old and have GD. Baby is measuring normally, but my doc plans to induce at least a week early. I’m on a dose of nightly insulin to manage my fasting levels and they are still in the 90-95 range. The rest I’ve been able to manage with diet.
  • @fontgurrl  welcome :) That's great you've been mostly successful with diet! Hope it continues.

Update for me....dosages of insulin are now at 50u of Humelin at the morning, 22u of Humelog in the. morning, 16u of Humelog with dinner and 25u of Humelin at bedtime. My numbers are dropping super low but also really high other times of the day. Even with the same meal all week for all 3 meals *eye roll*....SO! Doctor decided to schedule the c section for 38 weeks. 27 days or less until baby is here! I am excited about that. It's nice to have an end date in sight at least.
