  • Selfishly started this thread because I'm looking for tips on the best butt and body creams/products, diaper rash products, general toiletries, and meds used to soothe and care for the babes! It's a vague topic but there's so much to cover! TYIA!

  • @rooonilwaazlib thanks for starting this!  I’m curious too!  I want to have a little stock of the stuff I’m most likely to need early on so I don’t have to worry about finding something for every issue and getting out to the store.

Me too... Im looking at (and have purchased a bit of)  non toxic, eco friendly and cloth diaper safe stuff. I have some ideas, but as a FTM and first time cloth diaperer, I'd like to hear what other experienced moms have used...
*** Also, any cloth diapering moms who want to drop their fave eco friendly Cloth Diaper and High efficiency safe detergent (not one i have to mix myself!) on here it would be awesome!!!
  • For the most part I used coconut oil for everything; cradle cap, dry skin, butt cream, etc. When his diaper rash got wicked we used Triple Paste.

    https://www.amazon.com/Triple-Paste-Medicated-Ointment-Diaper/dp/B000GCL2B8/ref=sr_1_1_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1541690058&sr=8-1-spons&keywords=triple+paste+diaper+cream&psc=1

Body wash/shampoo I just used Aquaphor since it didn't have any scents or anything.
    https://www.amazon.com/Aquaphor-Baby-Shampoo-Fluid-Ounce/dp/B01EAH644Y/ref=sr_1_8_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1541690090&sr=8-8&keywords=baby+shampoo

I recommend a Nose Freida for sure. The bulb sucker things mold on the inside and don't work very well, IMO. I always keep infant tylenol, motrin and gas drops on hand.

I think that's pretty much it.

  • I originally used Beaudreux's Butt Paste and then when we started solids we used Aquafor. Now, we switch between the two. Aquafor for pee, paste for poop.

  • FTM question: do you use the cream/ paste with every single diaper change, or just if they're already having skin issues?

  • Aquaphor everything- diaper rash, dry patches on skin, I even use it on my lips and dry, cracked skin.
  • @AshVA I only put cream one when he started to look red. I used coconut oil on him daily and I think that helped.

  • Another +1 for Aquaphor for baby's bottom. I will add that DS has never had severe diaper rash, so I can't say how well it would work for that. I've heard good things about Triple Paste.

We use Aveeno lotion. The Johnson's lotion dried DS's skin out.

  • +1 for the nosefrida or similar off brand contraption.

You will not be able to live without this, especially during cold season. Babies obviously can't blow their nose and clear mucous which leads to them not being able to breathe properly (when little they don't have the "nose is blocked, breathe through mouth" reflex, so nasal congestion can be serious). Definitely purchase some type of snot sucker that is not the bulb (those mold inside and can't be cleaned properly....they also don't work very well).

@dragonette505 check out the detergent index on Fluff Love University. I had a couple of eco-friendly detergents in mind but then I read the index and found they were not recommended for one reason or another. On a similar note, have you tested the hardness of your water? I ordered testing strips off amazon even though I have a water softener because both soft and hard water can pose different problems and will influence the kind of detergent you need to use as well as the type of wash routine.

Yes. They also have a hard time eating if they can’t breathe through their nose.

  • Ditto EVERYTHING @ladystout08 said but also we used Honest body wash and Boudreauxs butt paste in addition to those things.
  • I agree with the coconut oil for skin, scalp and bum issues.

If baby is prone to rashes give them lots of time naked to help dry out their skin. I would wrap baby in a blanket or put one down on the carpet in case there were any accidents.

Also +1 to keeping tylenol on hand.

I also have saline drops or saline spray for stuffy noses. This one is 2yrs plus but pretty sure they make one for under 2 as well.  Currently using on myself for the cold.i have.

My toddler hates getting his temperature taken with a regular thermometer so I'm going to be getting one of the ear ones.
We have a no touch one but I find it's not accurate.

My baby was prone to eye infections and they came on quickly. A little breastmilk in his eyes a few times a day as soon as it was noticed and they cleared up so quickly.
  • A&D Ointment worked wonders for diaper rash for DS. Butt Paste was another good one. Sometimes I would create a double barrier out of each.

  • I use Babyganics baby wash and a tub of Cetaphil lotion on 2 of my 3, but my one with bad eczema gets washed with Mustela Stelatopia and lotioned with Noodle and Boo ultimate ointment (seriously, buy this if you have a kid with eczema- I tried like 15 products before this, including 4 prescription).

For diaper cream, I only use when they start to look irritated, and I don’t particularly stay loyal to one brand. Aquaphor is good, Boudreaux is good...I do really like the new rash cream from DoTerra, but I know it’s not as readily accessible.

Rockin Green active wear detergent is great for cloth diapering and for gross baby clothes, so that’s what I use for things that get poop/vomit/food staining. Otherwise we use Tide Free and Gentle (my eczema prone guy is sensitive to the All free and clear brand, and Dreft is really fragranced).
  • Does anyone use Seventh Generation free and clear detergent on their baby clothes? That's what we use for our clothes (it doesn't aggravate my eczema), so it would be ideal if we could use the same detergent for the baby clothes as well.

Also, any recommendations for gentle cleaners that can be used for hand knit baby clothes that need to be hand washed? We have a bunch of sweaters and other knit baby clothes that my great grandma made for my brother and me when we were babies. I'm partially dreading the extra work of hand washing, but I don't want to not use the clothes she put so much effort into just because cleaning them would be less convenient.

  • Ive stocked up on baby aquaphor. It was highly recommended to me.

Also anyone can start threads! Ive just gotten lazy but I definitely don't own the product spotlights.  I was just doing it because no one else was  :) thanks for starting this thread @rooonilwaazlib! I'm already adding to my amazon cart
  • @AshVA I never used baby detergent. I used Tide free & Clear on all of our clothes.

  • Thanks @saltedcaramel518. Unfortunately my skin hates any Tide, but hopefully if the 7th Gen works for me it'll work for the baby as well.

  • I'm a die-hard Burts Bees fan - anyone have experience w/those baby products? Specifically the shampoo/body wash & diaper ointment? Of course as I'm looking through this thread I lurked my registry and someone already bought those sooo hoping it's good stuff lol.

we have a water softener and purifier and filter attached through our water source so hopefully that's all good... I did print out a long ass list from one of the CD sites, but they don't really say which is the best or most preferred, kwim? Im hoping for a first hand, "this really worked for me" type reco. :)
  • I liked Dreft and I enjoy the smell. No issues w irritation but I’ve switched over to regular tide on DDs clothes mostly and she has no irritation from that either.

Burts bees... hmmm Other than clothes and blankets I think the only product we tried from them was an all purpose baby balm and it did not go over well on anything that looked like it could develop an open sore so diaper rash or eczema… I don’t know if it burned or if she was allergic to something (she isn’t allergic to anything we know of) or just didn’t like it but we never used it again after trying a couple times.

Also @galactickates add it to the amazon registry then buy it all w registry completion and you’ll get 15% off once you hit 60 days before the due date.

my mom used Aquaphor on all her kids in some form or another! I guess its one of those old skool things folks are still using!
  • @wolfmum I actually just hit my registry completion discount date.  You should see my cart right now!!!  :D 🤦‍♀️
  • @wolfmum ooooh sketch I'll have to keep my eyes peeled. My skin is sensitive so I'm nervous she'll inherit that
  • I used Dreft with DD1 then switched to free and clear, then to regular detergent. With DD2 we just used regular detergent from day 1 with no irritation.

She did have eczema on her cheeks at a couple months old and we used Aveeno eczema ointment and it cleared up immediately.
  • Triple Paste is hands down the best on the market!! My daughter never had any major diaper rash. Just slather it on. Love that stuff!

Yes to Aquaphor! It seriously is amazing for just about any skin ailment.

Also, I recommend buying gripe water and gas drops before baby is born so you're not wishing you had them in the middle of the night! Ds was very gassy and gripe water and gas drops were a lifesaver for us.

Nosefrida is amazing too, I was very skeptical but it works wonders.

I'm really enjoying the baby Dove products for ds1. I felt like the Honest co baby wash and lotion were okay but ds always felt dry after using their products.
  • I like aveeno for everyday lotion and had aquaphor for dry patches. DS never really got any diaper rashes when he was younger but gets them occassionally now if he has some loose stool. He actually had a rash tonight after he pooped 4 times today. I think its partly due to his diapers. Occasionally we have issues with Target brand diapers and his skin being a little sensitive, so we will put him in Pampers for a few days and see if that helps. Tonight i put calmoseptine cream on him, it's my go to when his bottom gets really excoriated. we use it in the hospital and it can be bought just over the counter but is a little more pricey.
    BabyFruit Ticker
  • Drabong’s comment on diapers reminded me that DD did get rashes from target diapers and certain pull ups when she got older- she has sensitive skin like me!
I found any of the more ‘natural’ diapers to work best- I think pampers has a line without harsh chemicals which we used when she was a newborn; we also used seventh generation; and then started using regular pampers or Huggies when she got older without any issues. I really wanted the cheaper generic to work, but not for us.

For wipes we used whatever was fragarence free- typically bought the target brand.
  • So super weird thing with DD - she reacted to aveeno soap which is supposed to be sensitive. She did fine with regular Johnson and Johnson lavender so that’s what we’ve stuck with.

She reacted to pampers and huggies. She did super well with target brand diapers and they are also super affordable. Less than $5 per pack which is on par or less than brands like luvs. That being said she also is cloth diapered 90+% of the time.

Even for a baby with slightly sensitive skin - we never used baby detergent. I use regular tide and she never had any issues with it. The recommendation I got before I had her was to wash her clothes in our detergent, and then change it only if her skin reacts to it. It worked well for us!

+1 for only using ointment when DD had a rash. And I mostly used just A&D (though it’s not cloth safe. When I needed cloth safe I used beadreaux natural - green tube). With cloth diapers she really only got a rash if we needed to put her in disposables for some reason or when she started teething.

@drabong88 I use tide for my diapers. 16 months going strong and no issues. With a water softener you are almost definitely safe on hardness but I would still invest in hard water tests just to be safe. Better to know ahead of time then to have to strip and bleach all of your diapers after you start having problems.

  • @dragonette505 I tried Rockin Green last time I cloth diapered and it didn't work well for me. I also had hard water at the time so that might have made a difference. I also tried Laundry Tarts and ECOS, both which I see are now not recommended (even though they were all the rage 7 years ago) and never worked well for me either. I now have to strip and bleach my stash which is hard on the diapers and can be risky, so I've decided to forgo the eco friendly stuff this time around (even though I use it for our clothes) and use Tide, which seems to be the gold standard now in the CD community. It's not my preference, but I've spent so much on my diapers and I'm going with the thought that even though I'm not using an all natural detergent, I'm already doing baby a service by reducing chemical load by using cloth diapers.

I saw on one list that the arm and hammer free and clears (there seems to be a bunch) are CD and HE safe... i feel like I wouldn't mind those since a bunch of them are unscented and supposedly low irritants and whatnot....
My plan has been to possibly go the first month or so with a more eco friendly low toxic brand for my newborn and then segue into something more conventional after that... I feel like by the time the baby grows out of the newborn diapers she may be ok with me switching detergents (again, we have also considered doing a pre soak with more conventional detergent and wash with something gentler. Ive been reading up on that option too...
  • @dragonette505 totally meant to tag you above and accidentally tagged drabong88. I would advise against rockin green detergent. The ‘natural’ detergents in general tend not to be abrasive enough to get the diapers fully clean. I’ve seen so many people quit cloth diapering because they end up with diapers that smell or cause rashes from proper washing. I think starting with a free and clear from the beginning is probably the best option. The last thing you want to have to do with a newborn is trouble shoot diaper problems! Pre soaks also typically aren’t recommended but two washes are. Wash 1 is to get the soiled stuff out and wash 2 is to get the diapers completely clean!

Pre soaks also typically aren’t recommended but two washes are. Wash 1 is to get the soiled stuff out and wash 2 is to get the diapers completely clean!
but two washes with a dry in between? or two consecutive washes?
