When is your first OB appointment?

Hi Mamas,

I thought it would be a great idea to start a thread to keep track of everyone's first OB appointment.

Also for the STM+ , any suggestions us FTMs should ask/find out about that you recommend from experience or something else you had wished you had done differently?

Re: When is your first OB appointment?

  • we have our first prenatal booked for December 10th... and are supposed to get our first ultrasound prior to that, I believe. Definitely interested to hear what others typically want to find out at these appointments, FTM here!

  • First appt is set for December 3rd. I'm not even sure what it all entails it was 6 years with a lot of appts after.

I would find out if they have rotating OB's for delivery in their practice and if you'll be seeing them as well during your pregnancy.

ETA: I haven't made my first appt yet. My OB gave me a choice to come in and do bloodwork and I declined. I'll probably call next week and make one. They can get me in pretty quick.

I love my OB but when it came to my loss last month I hate how she kind of jerked me around and gave me false hope. I don't want to go through that again so I want to wait a bit before I go in.

  • November 21.. getting closer!
  • I will have my first visit with my midwife at 10 weeks and then monthly after that until the end. If everything progresses as it should I will have one ultrasound at 20 weeks and then an elective 3D scan if we want sometime after that.
  • First appointment is next Monday 11/12, no idea what to expect but I'm excited!
  • Our first 8 week ultrasound/appointment is November 29th. We meet with the UT first and then a nurse practitioner after that.
I agree with PP, ask what other doctors may be in your rotation to deliver you. I had never met the OB who delivered my son (I started to push in the middle of a shift change, go figure) and although he was kind and wonderful, it was the first male OB I'd ever seen and it was uncomfortable at first. I just didn't think to ask and looking back I wish I would've.

  • Mine is not until 11/29.  They would take me earlier, but we are going away for Thanksgiving.
  • 11/26 for me. I’ll be 8 weeks-ish. I read that the first appointment can take 2 hours, but apparently I’m only down for 30 minutes (but I am getting an US).
  • Mine is 11/13. Pretty much going to take a pregnancy test, get blood work done and make my 8 week ultrasound appointment
  • Mine is 11/13 through my fertility doctor. They monitor me until I’m 8 weeks and then they’ll transfer me to my OB.
  • I had my first appointment a couple of weeks ago.

They wanted me to come in early because of recurrent loss. I have an RE appointment next week (they are just going to check if there is anything else that they can be doing to support this pregnancy that perhaps we didn't do for the two previous ones). Just like @nopegoat I HATED the false hope and ambiguity of the early scans so I have asked to push mine as late as they will let me. So I go on November 29th. I should be 9 weeks by then. The RE wants to do an early scan next week so I don't know what I'm going to do about it...but I'm going to try to get them to let me wait until the appointment  on the 29th. Waiting sucks but the uncertainty of the last 2 times and the weeks of waiting after a bad scan were worse for me:/
  • I already went into my GP for bloodwork and have my first ultrasound on November 21st when I’ll be 8weeks. Then my first appointment with the midwife is December 4th!
  • 11/28 is my first appointment!!
  • 12/4 for me, or 7W5D. I called again to ask about an ultrasound and they said those are done offsite, so it would not take place during my first OB appointment. But they're going to check with my OB if I should have one done around that time.

My first appt is 11/28. I am currently 5w2d. Seems forever away. So worried that something can happen between now and then
  • Mine is 12/7. I will be 10 weeks.
  • Nov 13th. I’ll be 6w2d. I’m an IF patient so that’s why we have such an early ultrasound :)
  • My my first appointment is 11/29 with my midwife. Consult, tests and an ultrasound are planned. That would have me at 9w2d. We were going to schedule it the week before but we are also out of town for Thanksgiving.
  • Mine is 11/26. I’ve had four blood draws already though. I was given the all clear to stop those now though so it’s back to just hanging out and waiting. They confirmed I’ll get an U/S at my first appointment though so I’m looking forward to that.
  • I’ve had two hcg levels earlier in the pregnancy. I have my first ultrasound schedule on 11/19. I should be 8 weeks that day. If all goes well I’ll be discharged from the RE and able to move onto my OB
  • 11/19 I'll be 7 weeks. Going to get an ultrasound for dating and placement. New OB so not sure what to expect after that.
  • 12/7 at 10wks+1. They'll do blood work and an ultrasound.

My confirmation appointment is on 11/20 when I am eight weeks.  I know that I will be getting an u/s and then probably blood work.  An actual appointment with an OB will not be until 12 weeks.
  • 12/6 is my first OB appt, I’ll be 10 weeks then. I’m a little surprised as my first pregnancy I had an US at 6 weeks.
  • 12/5 - I'll be 9w+1d. I had an u/s at 5w after a scare. Could only see the gestational sac cause it was too early.
So looking forward to seeing and hearing the heartbeat.
  • Where I am we don't get an ultrasound until the 20 week anatomy scan (unless theres complications). My first pregnancy I called to see my GP doc to confirm pregnancy when i found out at 4 weeks.  I was so excited and the secretary was rather snooty telling me it was way to early. *TW* She even insinuated that I could very well loose the baby before the appointment (what a thing to tell a brand new FTM). *END TW*

I ended up making an appointment for 8 weeks and then again at 12 weeks to hear the heartbeat. After that I was referred to my OB (who i loved!). At around 16 weeks we booked a private ultrasound to see baby but did not find out gender (team green). So this time around I think I'm going to bypass my GP and just call the OBs office around 6 weeks to see if I can get in with the same OB. Hopefully will have my first appointment by mid December!
  • @canuckmomma what a terrible secretary! That must have stressed you out so much. Hopefully you won't have to deal with anyone like that this time.
  • I just found out this weekend and need to call tomorrow. My practice generally only does a 20 week ultrasound unless other complications arise, but I am going to ask for a dating ultrasound since I only had one pp cycle and got my BFP a week and a half after my expected period. My practice doesn't usually do the first real appointment until 12 weeks.

Mt first ultrasound with my RE is scheduled for 11/28 (I'll be 6w3d).  I will have another 8 week scan to make sure growth looks good and then be released to my regular OB. Really hoping the next two weeks fly by.

Edited to add- I thought everyone had a 12 week NT scan but I see some saying first US won't be until 20 weeks. Is the NT scan optional?

  • @leendenny When I was pregnant in 2013 at 31, I remember it being something that was not covered by my insurance and was bundled with either blood tests or amniocentesis. I opted out of testing and so we did not have another scan (I had a pregnancy confirmation scan at ~8-9 weeks) until the 20 week.
  • @leendenny
depending on your age, your history, your insurance, and your doctor you may or may not get a scan before 20 weeks. I will get one at my 7 week appointment next week, I will be referred for advanced maternal/fetal monitoring for being old, fat, high risk, etc... will get blood testing and probably 2-3 other scans this pregnancy.
  • @leendenny with my first two pregnancies, the only scan that was definitely done was the anatomy scan at 20 weeks. The 12 week NT scan was optional, and unless you were unsure of your dates they didn’t do any early scans. My office has currently changed their policy, and now they do an early ultrasound around 8 weeks, but the NT is still optional.

  • I'm going in 11/13 @ 5w to confirm and get an OB referral/schedule other appointments. Now I'm feeling like that may not be necessary?  But the secretary didn't even ask how far along I was. Oh well....
  • Wow just called to make my appointment and they said they don’t get people in until 10 weeks (which is what I expected) but it’s not until January 9th. How am I supposed to control my anxiety over making sure the baby is okay for that long. I’ll be 13 weeks
  • @bartonolivia 13 weeks does seem like a long time before seeing the dr for the first time. I would call back and see if they have a cancellation list you can be on in case something opens up sooner.

  • @quinniebear It might be a quick general Q&A appointment. I was told my initial appointment would take 15-20 minutes and would mostly be questions.
  • @nolemomma14 I tried asking them if I could get in earlier but they swore that that’s when I need to come in! So frustrated. They also swore I was going to be 10 weeks then and I’m definitely not. I’ll be 13. So frustrating
