I have similar name taste. My daughter is Amelia and I love the name Charlie for a girl.  I also love Oliver for a boy.

@kangstadt Odessa is a VERY beautiful city on the Black Sea in Ukraine, a nautical themed middle name could be a cool match:)
  • @saraleigh2 I LOVE Margot.

  • @socks2819 I looooooove the nickname Winnie! I hadn't even thought about Gwendolyn for the full name, all I could think of was Winifred and didn't want to do that, but now that I've heard Gwendolyn, I might have to add it back to my list haha.
  • We are officially settled. For a girl, Olivia Noelle nn Livy. For a boy, Marco Antonio after my FIL. DH’s middle name is also Antonio, and they called him Toño as a boy which I think is so cute! Feels so good to have at least names set in stone!
  • @lyse01 thanks! Picking a boy name was so easy and I jumped on the bandwagon for naming him after FIL immediately 😂 it was nice to avoid a struggle, and I like that there’s a meaning. The girl name doesn’t have any significance, but it flows so nicely with our last name!

@lilpotatomama I’m totally down with FIL names! our boy name is a carryover from last time: FIL first name + my GGGM maiden name (used in every generation since as first or middle). Our girl name is up in the air...prob one of the back ups from last time but as previously discussed we spend 15 min/week focused on this kid so it may take a while. I insist we have names set in stone before DH peeps at the sex, though.
  • @lilpotatomama we're strongly considering FILs name as one of the middles if we have boys! DS1 has my dad's middle as his. Love family connection names.

  • Okay my husband is officially driving me crazy. We are having another boy and boy names are really hard for us. I’ve been throwing around boys names since we got pregnant and he was saying he wasn’t going to think about it till we knew. Fine. Now we know. So I’ve been bringing up names again. He basically shoots down or acts ambivalent about every name I come up with. But also refuses to offer up even a single suggestion of his own. Wtf dude.
  • My son is Tobias Martin (Martin is my dad's name). I'm looking for a Scottish or Irish name for a girl. Right now the one name my husband and I can agree on is Fiona. Which is lovely, but I feel like I need to have more options before I meet the baby.
  • @laurainoakland Scottish girl names...how unfamiliar to native English speakers are you going for?

    Likely to be mispronounced:
    Catriona
    Mairi

likely to never have been heard of, but pronounceable:
    Marcail
    Elspeth

    Popular:
    Heather
    Isla
  • @professormama, same here!  We don't know the sex yet, but DH refuses to suggest names.  We're set on a boys name (Cai/Kai Logan) but for a girls name, I like Brenna Fae, and he wants Fae Logan.  Sigh.

Have you tried that baby name app that lets you like names and it shows which ones you and your partner both swiped right on?  Maybe he'd do something like that without you there so he doesn't feel like he's pressured or something.

@kangstadt we downloaded that swiping app, but we were both too cheap to pay extra for features or more names, so it ended up not working for us. Lol
we have a short list of possibilities at this point. Huxley (nn Huck) and Jude, being the top contenders. He likes Huxley better and I like Jude better. But I’d really like to find something we BOTH love. Boys names are just so hard! There are so many fewer boys choices than girls names.
  • @professormama, I love Jude!  And Huxley is unusual and that's a cute nickname for it.  Can there be a compromise and you use both?  Huxley Jude or Jude Huxley?

I don’t think we will use both because I really want my last name as this baby’s middle. But I suppose we could have two middle names for this baby .. so many decisions!
  • @professormama, I considered two middle names so DH and I could both get our way, but our last name is already hyphenated and super long, so DH doesn't want to do that to our poor kid, haha.

I will say that today's computer systems still have an irritatingly difficult time with two middle names or calling a kid by their middle name (I usually give up when it comes to government things and just answer to my first name, even though I go by my middle).  Not to discourage you if two names is what you want to do, just something to keep in mind!

  • @laurainoakland I've always been a big fan of Moira and Bridget

    Eileen
    Aisling
    Diedre
    Siobhan
    Sheena

Would also all sound nice with Tobias.

  • @kangstadt I have a hyphenated FIRST name!! It’s such a hassle, but after 33 years I’m used to it. Weirdly, it makes me more willing to do that kind of thing to my kid? Lol. I guess my attitude is that it’s just not that big a deal. After all, lots of Latino/a kids have two last names, or (as you said) people have hyphenated last names. But my husband is less enthusiastic about having two middle names and other things like that.
  • @sheknows6 Evelyn Grace is great! Yeah. We're not discussing names again till after we find out the sexes. Picking out 4 boys names and 4 girls names (for first and middles) would drive me bonkers.

  • DH loves a girl name that I think a lot of people will mispronounce (Saorise- pronounced SIR-sha). I love it too, but I’m trying to get it to be a middle name. We otherwise like Ruth a lot.

Our last name is a pain for boys- it pairs awkwardly with names that end with ‘n’. We like both Ezra and Cyrus, but have no clue on middle names. Figure we’ll put more thought in after we know
  • @Lin0442 I love Ezra and Ruth. I also LOVE Saorise, but I was trying to convince DH of Roisin for awhile so I may be a bad person to discuss Irish names with.

  • @professormama, I totally agree, I don't see the big deal but it can get aggravating and DH is of the mind that we not make our kids lives any more difficult than our hyphenated name already will mean *rolls eyes*.  A hyphenated first name is something I don't see much of!  Totally agree about Latino/a names also, you would think the US would get with the program already.

  • professormama- my best friends son is Huxley and we call him Hux. I haven't heard of anyone else having that name, but I like it!!

We decided on Claire Elizabeth. My Grandma was Clarice Elizabeth, which is a little dated for me.. we've had this name picked out since DS.
  • I think we actually mostly reached semi finalized names. It’s a miracle since we didn’t even have any options for DD till 8 months and still didn’t pick till after she was born.

This one will probably be Liliana Dawn or Oliver Wayne.

Boy bame is leftover from last time and will be till we have a boy or stop having kids. Both names are more popular then I would like but I know we aren’t going to come up with anything else that we like and can agree on.

  • @thatbaintforbetty I absolutely love Oliver for a boy

    Me: 32 / DH: 33
    DD born: 3/31/19

  • @thatbaintforbetty My neighbors have a little boy Oliver (he goes by Ollie) and it’s super cute. Sometimes things are popular for a reason!

@kangstadt Hyphenated names are fine, but in my line of work I have to be extremely picky about spelling/formatting for safety reasons so I get nervous about them. Some folks change how they give their name a lot (no spaces sometimes, half the name others, etc) and that causes so many identity problems! Consistency is key
  • @lin0442 He would probably go by Ollie all the time. DDs name is Sylvia but if you ask her it’s Silly, which is her nickname.

  • Is anyone else having disagreements over family names? We have pretty much decided on Hattie or Harry (with Theo as a back up boys name). If it's a girl, I like Hattie Lou as the middle name would incorporate 3 out of my 4 grandparents. I like the name Harry Louis (other options are Paul, August, and Hunter) but DH is set that if we have a boy it should have middle name from his family. He knows I don't like his middle name and is ok with that not being an option. But since I took his last name, I don't see anything wrong with having some of my family names incorporated into each of the kids' names.

Am I being overly dramatic and/or is he just being a man about the middle name?
  • @mrstmoose we gave DS a family middle from my side, because IMO (and this might not apply to you), DS has my husband's family's last name, so his family name is covered.
    Lilypie Pregnancy tickers
  • @mrstmoose I can see the ladies’ argument that the patriarchy has already given their child one (last) name from the male line. But I personally think it’s unfair to say that that’s the only family name the gentlemen get to contribute.

We compromised on a first from one side and middle from the other on our first’s boy and girl names, then we kinda ran out of family names DH liked. It’s easier for us because we have the same preferred style (classic and already in the family). If as a couple you guys are choosing a first name from neither family, then I think alternating the family the middle name comes from is fair.
  • I have a feeling this is a boy. Our sons name is Kellan. So far I like the names Greyson, Miller and Cole. Any other ideas by chance?? I'm having a rough time thinking.

P.s. My sister always wanted to name a boy Colton. She later said she didnt want to anyore. Ive always wanted to name a boy Cole. She just lost her baby boy at 20 weeks and named him Caleb. Would Cole be too close to what she liked or remind her of a boy she lost? I love the name but dont know if its insensitive or if I'm thinking too much.
  • @elmich3 I think I’d just bring it up as an option to her and see her response. They are very different in my opinion.
  • On the note of Latino/Hispanic naming - DH has 4 names total. First, middle, paternal last name and maternal last name. He asked me if I want to do the same for our kids and I said a firm NOPE. He always gets called by his maternal last name just because it’s his second last name, even though that isn’t the last name either of us use. Cannot tell y’all how many times I’ve been called “Mrs.
L———“ and I’ve had to correct it 😑
  • Hey guys!

Weve picked out two names and I don’t think they will change.

Girl: Iona (eye-oh-na, it was my great grandmother name)
    Boy: Maverick
  • @youngedtjupiter, I LOVE iona! (ione is another variation I love, too)

@lyse01, I have always loved imgoen, but have been confused on the pronunciation. is it imo-gene? or imo-gin?

@MRDCle, sib sets are important to me, too! when I was talking to some friends about this, they thought I was crazy.

@cabearit, inez is pretty much my first option. :)

@kaleesi93, my husband's joke name is townsend -_- it is his answer every time I ask him for a name suggestion, boy or girl.

my husband is mexican-american, and I'm half japanese. one one boy looks pretty latin, and I'm sure this baby will look just as ethnic. so I'm limited to latin-friendly names to go w/ our spanish last name. first son is jonah (which happens to be hebrew for my maiden name, but that's not why I picked it.) as much as I would love to stick w/ biblical names for this 2nd baby, I'm struggling to find one that fits my criteria- namely, not too popular. (btw, we are mostly non-religious, idk why I'm hung up on biblical.)

when I was pregnant w/ our first, and we didn't know the sex, I threw around the name lilith, which husband & I both love, but we live in the buckle of the bible belt, and I know growing up, she will run into consternation w/ it. there is also the high chance that it will get shortened to lily, which, as beautiful as that is, has become way too popular for me to entertain for my own child.

so for a girl, it's either inez or ofelia (we'll pronounce it the "white" way, though.) I'm leaning more towards inez b/c I think it goes better w/ our last name. ofelia + our last name is too vowel heavy, in my opinion. and jonah + ofelia isn't as pretty a sib set as jonah + inez.

for a boy, it's basically israel. last pregnancy, jonah was going to be either jonah or sebastian. and as much as I still love sebastian for a boy, it is also becoming too popular for me to consider now.

my mom hates both inez & israel b/c she claims she won't be able to pronounce them. but this baby will have a japanese middle name, just like jonah does, she can use that. I still curse my parents for never giving me a japanese name.
  • @batmama31 I looooove Inez.

@batmama31 +1 for Inez. And I’ve only heard it as IM-a-gin (and now, Immie as nn).
