@msb615 we’re also following dd2’s lead on using the toilet. She will be 3 in January (😟 that seems so much closer now that it’s October!) and so far has shown zero interest. She’ll sit on the potty while we draw the bath but doesn’t do anything in it yet. That’s really the only time we encourage it bc she’s already naked and has peed on the floor a couple times while waiting to climb into the bath. 😂
@poshspice I’m sorry you can relate. The all day nausea with almost no vomiting this time is new to me; with my others it was a quick puke first thing in the morning and fine for the rest of the day. 😆🤷♀️
@stringofhearts I guess I should follow his lead because there’s no tempting him with treats or anything. Surely he won’t go to kindergarten in diapers, right? 😂
Hahaha @msb615 I thought 8 months ago when we let dd2 pick out underpants that she’d be interested around the summer time. 😆😆😆 I see now that was a foolishly optimistic hope. But yes, surely by kindergarten.... 🤞🍀
How many kids do you already have? Ages? DS, who is almost 2.
How are your other kids doing this week? He’s becoming very needy and I’m not sure if it’s just one things that is setting it off or multiple. DH just came home after a long work trip, DS is getting his eye teeth (for like the last 5 months...), and I’ve transitioned him from his bedtime bottle (I know...bad momma) to his cup, finally!
Rants/Raves? Concerns/Questions? I’m a bit annoyed at DH for spilling the beans yesterday to our daycare provider (close friend and also family photographer) that we’re expecting. I had a huge thing planned for her and he just carelessly mentioned it her instead. Bummed.
GTKY: What transition are you going to try to make before baby arrives? Example: crib to bed, potty training, new bedroom. (Stolen from April 19 and June 19 ) I’m hoping to potty train DS in the next few months. I’d like him to have it down for a solid 6 months during the day before #2 comes along. We’ll see how that goes. We’ll work on the toddler bed once the little one shows up and DS is excited about having his new big boy room.
@maggieg183 my husband sent his dad a text "Jamie's pregnant." Dude. I was pinteresting all the cute things to tell them I was pregnant and he just sent an impersonal text.
How many kids do you already have? Ages? 1 son, 14 months
How are your other kids doing this week? He’s ok. He’s been getting frustrated easily and since he doesn’t have the vocabulary to express himself he screams. We live in an apartment building so I worry about the noise.
Rants/Raves? Concerns/Questions? Speaking of vocabulary, is anyone else raising kids in a bilingual household? Did you do anything special to help with language acquisition? General advice?
GTKY: What transition are you going to try to make before baby arrives? Nothing too big since he will still be under 2 when baby arrives. However, we are gonna have to do something about his sleep. Currently he won’t go to sleep for DH so I am the only one who puts him to bed.
I'm late to the potty training convo, but I totally agree with the wait til they're ready approach. DD1 showed a little bit of interest at 2, and we were going on a big international trip when she was 2.5, so I tried to go for it then, and it just wasn't working, so we backed off and didn't try again for a while. Within a couple weeks of turning 3 it really clicked, and she was fully potty trained in a matter of days.
It's worth noting that those kiddos who are potty trained at 18 mos. are usually only day-trained, and still wear diapers at night.
@poshspice@msb615@secicc12 I also highly recommend the "Oh Crap! Potty Training" book. It worked for both of my kids and it's easy to read and cheap to buy. We potty trained DS1 shortly after he turned 2, and only about 6 weeks before DS2 was born and were so happy we bit the bullet. DS2 we used the same method at 21 months. With DS1 I was working, so it's somewhat trickier to manage with daycare (book does address this); by the time we trained DS2 I was a SAHM and it was a little easier... but it is doable both ways. I wouldn't write off potty training before your LO is born just for fear of regression, but you do realistically have to set aside a couple of weeks that are really going to suck. Worth it IMO.
How many kids do you already have? Ages? Two sons, 4 and 2
How are your other kids doing this week? They've had a lot of "daddy time" because (*TW?) I had a MC scare over the weekend and was basically a zombie. (*End TW)
Rants/Raves? Concerns/Questions? So thankful I got to see my baby on Monday and everything was fine.
GTKY: What transition are you going to try to make before baby arrives? Going to get a bunk bed and move my kids into the same room at some point before giving birth. Right now, DS2 is still in a crib- maybe this is weird, but he's never tried to get out and he goes right to bed and stays there all night. We moved DS1 to big boy bed when he turned 2 and that was not exactly fun! We'll upgrade DS2 in the new year and pray that it's easier when they're older.
While I was writing, it looks like a lot of people were still talking about potty training. I think it's one of those issues that elicits pretty strong opinions. I think it's important to look for signs of readiness. In my case, it did work to see signs of readiness, read about an approach, and basically execute a plan at a specified time that I had set out to "not do anything except potty training." I wouldn't claim this would work for everyone, because I have only my experience, but I just didn't want everyone to write off the possibility.
@misskimsue Thanks for the advice! I’ve heard great things about that book. I’m sorry you had a scare over the weekend but glad things are looking perfect 💕
@misskimsue I used the oh crap method with DD1 and it worked like a charm. Like, she was potty trained in a week at just over 2 and I can probably count the number of accidents we've had since on two hands. But I have NO IDEA how to make it work with DD2. DD1 is so active that we cannot stay home for 3 days in a row. Maybe I have to reread to see what she says about how to do it when you have to leave the house...
Also, I really hated how condescending she seemed of other methods and philosophies, and yet and I was never clear on what her own qualifications were. It worked for us, but I really felt like I would not have gotten along with the author.

@k2k2tog Totally agree about the condescension... I mostly just skimmed over some of that "yada yada this is why I'm the best" BS because I had heard the method worked and wanted to give it a shot. And it did work really well for me both times. I think at least the subject of the potty training really needs to stay home until s/he gets that first breakthrough of understanding when s/he is peeing and not wanting to do it on his/herself. And IIRC it does take 2 or 3 days. I think maybe we always had one of us stay home with DS2 those first days, but the other might take DS1 out to activities or maybe my parents watched him some of the time? If grandparents are a possibility, maybe having her stay with them some of the time would help?
@misskimsue yeah... I think we might just bite the bullet over the Christmas holidays, after all the festivities, but before I have to go back to work. We don't have many opportunities where DH and I are both available for 3 days to tag team the kids, except long weekends, and those are generally taken up by family stuff. I wanted to give it a go over the summer, but we were living with my parents and they did not seem willing to accept the pee on the floor issue.
Apparently, our daycare will do whatever we ask them to do in terms of potty training, so if we can get through three days with no diapers, I would probably feel pretty good about sending her to daycare, knowing they'll continue to work on it.
