Sleep Positions

We’ve all entered the final stage of 1st tri or begun the 2nd tri. Is anyone avoiding sleeping on their stomach yet? It’s most comfortable for me but not sure if I’ll have to give it up soon.

This posted before I finished that last option and it won’t let me edit the redundant ones, haha. Anyway, I’d love to hear your feedback!

  • I don't sleep on my stomach regularly but I used to lay on my stomach and watch Netflix on my iPad in bed (I know, I know, this is a terrible pre-sleep practice). This past week (16) it started to get too uncomfortable for me to be on my stomach. I've been a back sleeper and I really miss sleeping on my back. I have a u-shaped body pillow so I can lean back against it without sleeping flat on my back but it still doesn't take enough pressure off my hips.
  • I sleep whichever way gets the job done. My hips kill me on my side and on the belly hurts, sometimes. I have a pregnancy pillow, but I don't like it much. I wish I could just sleep in my recliner all night!

  • I voted no because I voted before reading and just thought it was the "I'm a speshul snoflayke" option, haha.

I am sort of half side/stomach sleeping and also back sleeping. I'm a stomach sleeper, but it hasn't been comfortable so I've been having a knee up and sort of canted so I'm not fully on my stomach. And then sometimes I sleep flat on my back, and sometimes with my side on my husband so I'm not flat on my back, but also not on my side.

I hate side sleeping. It's not bad yet because I can be pretty leaned far over, but late in pregnancy, it's awful. Even with a pillow between my knees, the top hip just aches in the mornings.
  • I sleep however I’m comfortable. I can still lay on my stomach but not for too long. I mostly sleep on my side but in past pregnancies I have to roll over often (easier said then done when I’m huge) or my hips are killing me.
  • I’m normally a left side sleeper, but lately my back and hips have been hurting and I’ve ended up turning to my back or right side and then back to my left. But lately my sleep problems have been getting up to pee too close to my alarm and being unable to fall back asleep or accidentally waking my toddler. My body aches are more directly related to my sleeping position though, and even with a pillow between my legs/under my belly my back, hips, and legs hurt.

  • Thanks for all the responses. My hips are so sore that my back & stomach provide the only relief right now, but neither will be safe for long, I guess.

I swear that in 1st tri I kept saying, “If I’d remembered how bad morning sickness is, I wouldn’t have gotten pregnant again.” Now heading into 2nd tri I’m like, “If I’d remembered sleeping would be this impossible...” I am such a whiner when pregnant. I’m absolutely amazed by women who enjoy being pregnant!
  • @keikilove I was totally one of those people. I loved being pregnant last time. This time doing it AND chasing a toddler around all the time has my whole body aching. All my symptoms have come earlier and harder.

  • One suggestion for hip pain. Sometimes hip pain can be from the belly pulling down toward the mattress and throwing things out of alignment. A wedge pillow has been a huge help to me this time around. I sleep with a regular pillow between my legs and the wedge under the bump. I still change left and right during the night, but it really helps my hips to get that extra belly support.

I decided to try the wedge this time becuase I want to stay married and the pregnancy pillow in our full bed was almost a dealbreaker with my first...
  • Thanks for the suggestion @maggiemadeit ! I will give that a try. Last night was so much better than the last couple nights though still rough. I caught a head cold which added illness related achiness on top of my preexisting pregnancy ones. FX it seems like I am on the other side of that.

My boobs have been a hinderance to stomach sleeping long before pregnancy (and especially now) so that’s not as big of an issue for me. I was a side sleeper for a long time until my brother had a nerve issue in his arm from side sleeping and I was noticing similar symptoms so I trained myself to sleep on my back as much as possible, but I heard back sleeping isn’t good in pregnancy, but haven’t really heard why. Anyone have any insight?

  • @distractedbyshinyobjects regarding back sleeping, as the uterus and baby get bigger and heavier, it can put a lot of pressure on some major blood vessels and impede blood flow.
  • I basically have to sleep sitting up, because of the heartburn.  Not sure how I'm going to keep this up!
  • I found that sleeping on the couch was weirdly more comfortable as I got bigger. Just something to try if you're having hip pain from side sleeping!
  • @dtspmama That was how I ended up at the end of my last pregnancy. I would just pile all the pillows behind me and lean back.
  • 16 weeks with twins and my bump no longer appreciates being squished  it makes me 🤢 nauseated.  I prop a pillow behind me because I keep waking up mostly on my back and I'm trying to. Avoid that.  Sleep is rough anyway because I have bronchitis

  • Usually sleep on my side but have already started using a pillow. I keep waking up on my back still, but it’s becoming difficult to get up from that position without rolling over.

  • I broke out my pregnancy pillow cause my back hurts already so I’m on my sides mostly. I can lay on my stomach, which is weird because with my daughter I couldn’t after like 8 weeks cause of the bowling ball feeling. I’m showing much more this time but for some reason it’s not uncomfortable yet. But I have already woken up on my back with my hands and feet tingly. That didn’t happen til after 20 weeks with my daughter. Anyone else?
  • I've always been a side sleeper but for the last few weeks my hips hurt so bad. MH bought a pregnancy pillow for me and that has helped some. But still... The only position that is comfortable is on my back. My Dr told me I can continue to sleep on my back until it's just not comfortable anymore. So I'm enjoying that while I can. Of course I still don't sleep as much as I would like. Haha
  • @valentynsi That's me too! The pillow between the knees helps but I still get woken up with hip pain. I've started taking a thin pillow and folding it in half to create a wedge that I lean back against so I'm off my hip but not completely on my back.
  • @mamakeeg - tingly hands every morning, not really the feet yet. I I don’t feel like I’m laying super awkwardly on my hands so I guess it’s just a fun pregnancy thing?

  • I’ve been pretty restless this week and have wound up attempting to sleep in any and all positions. I’m usually a side sleeper.
  • I never slept on my stomach. If I sleep on my back or right side I wake up in so much pain - I was advised today to officially go 100% left sided when sleeping by physicians at the hospital.
  • How did how did you all choose which pregnancy pillow to get? I don’t want to waste money on something that’s not right for me, but am willing to spend on something that will help me sleep through the night.
  • @mamakeeg @catlady2015 I noticed some tingling in my hands at some point in the first trimester. It even felt like burning sometimes (which took me awhile to realize because my brain just incorporated it into my dream). As soon as I started using a pillow between my legs, the tingling and burning (and dreams where my hands were covered in painful blisters) stopped so I chalked it up to a body alignment thing?

@jesiannv MH bought me the U shaped one. I love it! It allows me to have something between my knees and under my belly and then I can take the other side and wedge it under my butt and back to help take some of the pressure off of my hips when it gets too bad. I'd still love to be able to sleep on my back exclusively for the rest of the pregnancy but I know that won't happen. So I've been playing around with my pillow to figure out what's going to work best for me. Just bear in mind, the U shaped one is huge. It takes up half of my queen size bed. Of course MH doesn't mind because he uses the side I don't. Haha
  • I'm breaking out my big U shaped pillow tonight. A regular pillow bw my legs isn't cutting it anymore. I was tempted to vote, "sleep, what's that?"
  • We bought a new mattress this past summer and I’m convinced that’s why I am still sleeping super comfortably. I haven’t had to change anything about how I sleep. Although, I have a pregnancy pillow stashed in the guest room just in case!
  • @purpleteacher82 We also bought a new mattress and I’ve been sleeping so much more comfortably than my last pregnancy. My only issue is I keep waking up on my back.
  • What kind of mattresses did you guys get? We're in the market for one!
  • We have a tempurpedic mattress, I swear that's the only reason I'm still sleeping well on my back. It's so soft, but supportive and molds to your body.

  • @lindseyb918 We got the Layla. I was really hesitant to buy online but they have a 90 day refund period. You can donate it if you don’t like it for a full refund. Obviously, I didn’t donate it because it’s the most comfortable mattress I’ve ever slept on. There’s so many options though so I did a lot of research.
  • @lindseyb918 @chocolatelemons We have a Layla too!!! We absolutely love it! We wanted to upgrade to a King from our queen Sleep Number, but we couldn’t justify the cost of another Sleep Number. I did a lot of research knowing we like a softer matress. The Layla has a soft side and a firm side. (You can flip it.) It also has a lifetime warranty.
