FTM questions for STM+

Re: FTM questions for STM+

  • Also,  just wanted to add,  Motherhood Maternity does have some nice nursing bras,  though.  I can still use those for a second round.

  • @expandcontract I got a ton of their Jessica Simpson shelf bra nursing camis for $10 each during a sale and they were the best thing! I never did find a comfortable nursing bra that wasn’t all up in my armpits (that feeling makes my skin crawl), but I’m not very well endowed so the shelf bra was enough support for me.

  • I love H&M's maternity clothes -- much better quality than those I purchased at Motherhood Maternity and Target, and similarly priced.
  • @expandcontract i agree. Ftm but maternity as soin as you feel like it.

Shoot as soon as i have an ok first ultrasound I'll probably swing by target since its down the road from my OB.

I'm already an apply shashape naturally so martnerity shirts are sometimes the only thing long enough for me even when I'm not pregnant.

  • I think I did the hair tie trick once during the bloat period but I bought the underbelly panel insert pants pretty early on and they're so comfortable in the earlier stages. I'd say wear them as early as you want. Some moms-to-be I know want to wear their normal clothes as long as possible.

  • The downside to wearing your normal clothes as long as possible is you can stretch them out.  Then when you aren't pregnant anymore they are mishapen or don't fit anymore because they are so stretched out.

With my son i thought i got so lucky because my normal siE large yoga pants fit me my whole pregnancy.

Had my son and a month or too kater they where so stretch out of shape I couldnt wear them without them falling off and I was still heavier than pre pregnancy weight.

  • @psychobutthead yes! I had this happen with several of my pants that I wore well past the point I should've, and they became really loose on me postpartum. I never bought new ones bc I'm too cheap, but I always had to pull them up. Looking back I should've just worn maternity pants sooner.

Yeah my intetion is as soon I get an ultrasound saying everything is ok I'm buying maternity pants.

  • Oh, the hair regrowth. I have naturally curly hair, and mine was soooo bad, like it looked like I'd cut a layer 3 inches long around the crown of my head. I went ahead and cut it to where it was just touching my shoulders and added lots of layers so it looked more 'intentional'. Then I just wore it curly for like a year, cause if I tried to straighten it, that short layer would just frizz up like crazy. Plus side, I really learned to love my curls and style them really cute, which has been a total game changer for me.

  • Go to maternity pants early.  I like the full panel. I have Target, Old Navy and Motherhood Maternity.  I liked them all at different stages.  At the end when I was huge the MM were the best.  Just catch them on sale.  Target has great musing bras.
  • I like the H&M stuff, I'm not sure how it's going to go this time around since with DD she was a summer baby and a summer pregnancy, now it its going to be winter time (in canada last year it snowed till the end of april!) I remember last time all the layers made me so itchy
  • @cikcikpolicnik I love H&M, too. My favorite maternity dress is from there. DD was also a summer baby so this winter stuff is going to be weird.

Gap is good for basics when clothes are on sale (sweaters, tshirts, tank tops, etc.). ASOS has some cute stuff, especially for work. I actually started looking at thredUP and gave it a try. We'll see how it goes. I only buy at Motherhood Maternity and Pea in the Pod when they have really good sales but I liked them for some accent pieces. Pinkblush, too. I got nursing things from Target and loved it. Will have to check out their maternity clothes, this time. With a summer pregnancy, I didn't get too many pairs of leggings. Any good recommendations for under long sweaters? Looking at my old leggings, it's all pretty worn out and I had a summer pregnancy so wasn't even wearing them much (the motherhood maternity leggings, while comfortable, were horrible quality).

Am I gonna need a maternity winter coat? Like is that legit or will my regular one be ok, I am conflicted about spending that much

  • @sleepy33 omg the curly hair regrowth. I am so not looking forward to that again! If I put my hair up it was like a solid short fly away ring around my hairline, not a good look at all! I wore headbands for a year pp.
  • @sleepy33 you shouldn't, but it might depend where you live. I didn't buy one with DS but granted towards the end of winter when I was in my 3rd tri I couldn't zip up my coat. I didn't care enough though so I just wore it open

Ok, good. I'm in Kansas; our winters are cold but not brutal, usually. Thanks!

  • I just wore one of my husbands coats once it was cold enough that I needed it zipped (I’m in Iowa, it gets pretty cold!)
  • @sleepy33 Kansas! You're definitely ok haha. Where I am it's like -18C with a windchill making it -22/-25 sometimes. Even then I don't ever do up my coat, just layer and scarves. I mostly go from building to car quickly during the winter.
  • My question may be a **TW** This will be my third pregnancy and the first two ended in MCs before 12 weeks. Do you have any advice for an anxious but hopeful FTM? I'm 4w2d and have my first appt over the phone on 9/24. DH was a big help through the first two and he knows about this pregnancy. We're just apprehensive about getting excited. **End TW** 😂

  • @kbeers13 *TW entire post* I've had two MMC - one at 8 weeks (dx at 10 weeks) and one at 6 weeks (dx at 8 weeks). Honestly, all I can suggest is telling yourself that whatever is going to happen has already been decided and there's nothing you can do to change it. Assuming your losses are unexplained or chromosomal, there's nothing you can do to cause a miscarriage or to prevent one. So try to relax, take it one day at a time, try not to get too excited, but do remain hopeful.

Also, put some thought into scheduling your appointments in a way that lessens your anxiety. For me, I saw heartbeats twice. So for DD and DS (and this one) I scheduled my first US for 9 weeks. For me personally, going back week after week, seeing a HB, but not seeing growth, then not seeing a HB, then having to go for a better US at the hospital, was way more stressful than just not knowing. So now I go later than my MMC milestones. It's what works for me.  Going in early and being more carefully monitored might work better for you. But scheduling is something you can control, so I like to focus on that.
  • @ruby696 *TW entire comment* Thank you! I found out the loss of my first when we went to go see the heartbeat for the first time. We scheduled it for 8w and when they didnt say anything and we didn't hear anything, we knew something was wrong.  I'll work on staying humbly excited and setting the appointments up for my sanity. I appreciate all the help! ❤

  • I love my maternity coat. I wasn’t going to get one but I found it on sale (black Friday maybe). It is so confortable and warm. In hindsight especially great purchase since the night ds2 was born the temperature was -18F when I arrived at the hospital.

I'm in Canada too.  I've already been shopping for maternity winter coats since I don't think I'll be able to get away without one.  I squeaked by with my existing coats the last two pregnancies, but I'll be just slightly further along through the winter this time.  Plus I've gained a bit this past year and noticed my coat is snug through the bust already  :/.  I don't remember layering too much though, I was always such a furnace that I didn't need too much extra most of the time.

  • I called my ob/gyn to schedule my first appointment and they said they rotate through the doctors in the practice so you can be comfortable with them all on your delivery day depending on who is on call. Is this normal? Should I explore other options? I really like my doctor and I'd like to have her. She didn't mention this when I went for the preconception appointment.
  • @nopegoat I get that my doctor won't necessarily be the one that would deliver but I guess I expected all of my appointments to be with her pre delivery. Otherwise what is the point of picking an ob I like?
  • @lappymom2019 yes, very common. My ob’s office does this also. I had to be induced, so my doctor delivered my son, but if you happen to go into labor and your doctor is in surgery or unavailable for whatever reason, it’s nice to be familiar with another doctor that will deliver. Like @nopegoat said, you really won’t see your dr that much anyway.
  • @nopegoat @mrsb615 thank you both for your sage wisdom!   ;)
  • @lappymom2019 You have soooo many appointments at the end that you will still see a lot of your OB. Your OB will be the one you call and talk to when you have weird symptoms. Honestly, any OB/GYN practice will operate the same way. Like @nopegoat said your OB can’t be on call 24/7. My practice had 5 OBs and of course the one Dr that I didn’t see delivered DD via Csection. It would have been better if I had gotten to seen him a bit before I delivered. This time I will be sure to see all 5.

@chloe97 Thank you. That is reassuring!

  • @lappymom2019 pretty much all of my appointments were with my dr. I think around 20 weeks or so, I rotated through the other doctors in the practice once, and then the rest of my appointments were with my doctor again.
  • @lappymom2019 my OBs office didn't rotate me through the different doctors during my pregnancy but they were upfront about my dr possibly not being on call to deliver my son. I did luck into going into labor a week and a day late when she was on call though. I think it might be nice to have had at least one appointment with the other drs in her office just in case they had needed to deliver though. I wouldn't have known the dr at all if mine wasn't on call.
  • @lappymom2019 yes my practice does this (6 drs I think). It's funny bc there was one dr in my practice who I was like "please let it be anyone BUT her delivering my baby" and guess who ended up being brought in at the beginning of her shift after I'd been pushing for 3+ hours :D In the end I was really grateful for her bc she did amazing and stitched up my episiotomy so well that I had no issues recovering. I really liked getting to know all the drs ahead of time and as others have said there are SO many appointments throughout the pregnancy that hopefully you'll feel comfortable with all of them by the time LO arrives!
  • I only saw someone other than my doctor if he was out of town @lappymom2019.  It happened twice at the end bc he was out for a week on vacation and I had BP issues.  So it may be common for some practices but there are places where you just see your doctor. If you are uncomfortable you have every right to say something.  If that is the only way they operate and you don’t want your experience to be that way you may want to consider changing practices.  If you are ok with it, then sounds like you are in multiple sets of capable hands.
  • @lappymom2019 mine didn’t do this but I was very aware she could possibly not be delivering me (and she didn’t). I called my office knowing exactly who I wanted to see and I love her! I’m seeing her again.

  • @lappymom2019 My office gives the option. When it came time to actually do it, my OB was like "I mean, if you want to, you can, but you can just continue seeing me." I saw one other doctor for an appointment when she was on vacation, another came to check on me when I was at labor & delivery with a kidney stone 4 days before my EDD. My OB also checked on me at her lunch (I love her!), and would have been on call to deliver DD for my scheduled induction if I made it that long. I was lucky and she was on call the night I delivered.

I agree with others, there are so many appointments at the end it's really not a big deal to rotate. My mom said she did that with her doctor's office when she was pregnant with us.

  • @lappymom2019 With my DD I had a practice that did the same thing (rotate you through all the doctors during the prenatal visits) and I felt the same way you did at first, but in the end I loved loved loved that I got to meet all the doctors in the practice. I ended up with pre-eclampsia and had a longer stay than normal in the hospital. One doctor start the pitocin inducement, another delivered my baby the next day and started me on magnesium so I wouldn't have a seizure and a final doctor was there to release me when it was finally time to leave. It was so great to feel comfortable with all three of them. I am actually super jealous of you now, because I moved and had to change practices and now will just have one doctor, which after the great experience I had, I'm sad about now.
  • Thank you everyone, really. I feel so much better about it now. I do really like the practice so I am going to stick with it. Plus, the anxiety of trying to find another practice is really not in the cards right now. It is really amazing the things you don't even know about until you start going through it yourself.
  • STM here -

I rocked the fat pants, hair tie, belly band option until ~week 15 last time, partly because I am a PGAL mom and was too anxious to have others find out or to have bought things that I wouldn't use.  And then I loooooved the maternity pants (also, another vote for full-panel pants).  I live in Minnesota and did not get a coat last time (was due in July), but probably will this time since I am due earlier and expect to pop sooner.  Last time I was able to do a one-size-big fleece jacket and my winter coat open.  My favorite clothes were from Gap, Target, some shirts from Old Navy and a dress from H&M.  Agree that most clothes from Motherhood pilled or shrunk.  If you need nicer dress clothes, Ann Taylor has a maternity line.  And if you are looking for a special dress, try Pink Blush.

@lappymom2019 My clinic did not rotate docs, but I almost wish that they did (or did some other type of meet and greet).  On the one hand I was glad to see my doc so regularly.  On the other, I had never even laid eyes on the doc that delivered DD until about 30min before I was pushing, and he wasn't nearly as agreeable with my birth plan.  But also, as others said, the Labor & Delivery nurses are the true stars.
  • One of my biggest regrets last pregnancy was not getting maternity pants sooner. I didn’t think I’d need them until I started showing. But my lower abdomen grew stiff and I couldn’t button my pants for a while. I also did the hair band trick. Finally at 12 weeks I relented and bought some. I felt soooooooo much better!! Not making that mistake again, I’m busting them out as soon as my regular pants start feeling even slightly uncomfortable.

I also rotated OBs at my office. My baby ended up being delivered by one I liked best so I was happy :) she made the experience very calm and feel normal.
