Infertility

Second hand smoke as a child.

I have been reading some studies on how second hand smoke even as a child could cause infertility in adult life?
Both my parents plus numerous parents friends smoked when I was a child. The studies that I have read state that it can cause infertility ,but none of the studies state what can be done to fix this problem. The studies even said IVF(even if we had the money for this) was not successful in most cases.
My husband and I have been married for 8 years now  We have been actively trying to conceive now for 4 years now and nothing. All my doctor can tell me is unexplained infertility. I'm beginning to wonder if this is why we can't conceive? And what I can do to help if this is why?
What are y'alls thoughts?

Re: Second hand smoke as a child.

  • @futurebabymamma hi! Smoking definitely has an effect on egg quality but this is typically in the context of current smokers. People who are attempting to conceive are encouraged to stop smoking. You produce all of your eggs in utero and they complete their maturation upon ovulation which is happening now, decades (?) later, so I'm thinking the effect of smoking probably won't have a large impact. Can you list the studies you've read?

I'm sure there is evidence that second hand smoke decreases fertility later in life but I'm not sure if this would explain your infertility. What kind of tests has your doctor done?

Besides physical pathologies (blocked tubes, endometriosis, polyps, etc), age is probably the biggest factor. If you're over 35 you may have significantly decreased egg quality.

  • @futurebabymamma What kind of doctor are you seeing?
People think we become mothers when we give birth but the truth is we become mothers the moment we start calling our babies to us in our thoughts, dreams and prayers. Some paths are short and some are so long that you can easily forget where you were headed.

How I feel all of the time.

  • My parents were heavy smokers (my mom even smoked through her pregnancies).  I had no issues conceiving my first child but after having him had an ectopic that I was down a tube from and then when I had an HSG found that my remaining tube was damaged, causing my infertility.  I am now 20 wks pregnant after my first round of IVF.

My sister is 4 years older and had to do IVF due to her husband having spent issues.  She got pregnant with twins on her second round (first FET), and then got pregnant naturally about 5 years later.

all this to say, we both had infertility issues but for very different reasons, and both also conceived naturally under very different circumstances.  I doubt they were both due to second hand smoke but, who knows!
