FTM questions for STM+

Re: FTM questions for STM+

  • @merrylea @foodislove @msb615 I feel like i've heard 20 and 30 lbs thrown around but all the STMs in my first BMB said their OBs said it's fine to pick up your kid if it's what you've always been doing. I do plan to ask at my 8 week appt as I'm currious. DD is 21 lbs and easy to pick up but a 30 lb box might be different (it doesn't fit so nicely on a hip ;))

  • With IVF/FET they say not to lift anything over 25lbs.  That’s been the hardest over this 3 year journey of not being able to pick up my daughter during certain times.  Now that she is 5- it’s not as big, but we still cuddle on the couch.
  • Yeah I’m going to keep picking up my 17lb baby. Literally don’t have the option to not!

  • From what I remember, I was told that I could continue do anything that I was accustomed to doing prior to pregnancy. So obviously, if you were a couch potato before the BFP, don't suddenly start training for a marathon. And on the other hand, if you regularly lifted 50 lbs at the gym, you could continue as long as there aren't any complications.

  • What @expandcontract said. If it’s not part of your daily routine, don’t add something new. My muscles are accustomed to lugging around my 30 lb toddler, but I’m sure I would strain to pick up a 30 lb amazon box because of the awkward and unfamiliar shape. Our house has many stairs, I can’t stop lugging around my toddler any time soon! She doesn’t go down stairs yet!

Okay STM+s, does anyone remember when pregnancy hair magic takes effect? I remember at the very end of my pregnancy I only had to wash it like every 5 days and had hardly and shedding - it was so nice and thick! My hair is still shedding in handfuls when I wash it and I’m counting down the days to when the hair magic comes back... but I can’t remember when that is! Lol

  • Thanks @foodislove @merrylea and @minnemiska so much for the answers!
  • @poshspice I want to say around 20 weeks? Maybe a little before. I was the same way, didn’t need to wash my hair for a week straight. Sometimes I would anyway because it felt weird that I hadn’t washed it but it wasn’t greasy! It was awesome while we were on our anniversary/babymoon and because I stayed in the hospital for a while after delivery. One of my nurses commented on how good my hair looked :hair flip:

  • @expandcontract said exactly what I’ve heard about lifting weight. I also can’t imagine that lifting one 30lb box every now and again is going to be harmful, especially this early on.

@poshspice this is kind of sad... I don’t remember my hair becoming shiny and beautiful during either of my last two pregnancies, but I vividly remember it starting to fall out about 4 months postpartum. And then grow back in. Oh the regrowth. It’s the worst.

  • @k2k2tog me too! Everyone talks about amazing hair during pregnancy, and I just kept waiting and waiting. It never came, but it sure as hell starting falling out around 4m pp. Not a high point haha
  • @k2k2tog, @msb615 In addition to all the postpartum hair loss, my DS pulled out all the little hairs around my forehead around the same time because it was so brittle before I learned to keep it under a band - I still haven't recovered.
  •  @foodislove I have a nice halo of little flyaways all around my hairline. It drives me nuts! @poshspice I kept taking prenatals after DD was born bc I was nursing and then just never stopped. I was hoping it would give me beautiful pregnancy hair, but no luck! Just a ball o’ frizz.

  • @k2k2tog why is hair regrowth the worst?

  • @foodislove ohhhh I see. I seem to ALWAYS have that baby hair framing my face, though.

  • @k2k2tog why is hair regrowth the worst?
I ended up with weird short hairs around my hairline and my ears. And frizz. All the frizz. I'm almost 2 years postpartum and I still have random short hairs in the most awkward places.

  • @k2k2tog for a couple months post partum I had legit sideburns. These stupid short hairs that I couldn’t tuck behind my ears.  :D

    Pregnancy Ticker
  • When I was pregnant with my daughter my sideburns grew like crazy! They got so damn thick.  And i didn't even realize until i was looking at a picture of myself with my hair up a few months ago. It looked like i had two fat caterpillars on each side of my face.  I have to have them removed now and they still grow back bushy AF.

  • @k2k2tog@msb615 my hair started falling out in clumps at 12 weeks PP exactly. In fist-fulls. I was losing like 200+ hairs every time I washed it. I still have awful regrowth, especially at the base of my neck. I didn't lose that much around my face, but now I have short regrowth that sticks out all over my head. I feel like my hair is never going to recover.

  • @poshspice I wish I could reassure you that it does recover, but I'm not there yet. I think it will? But my hair is also busy turning pretty grey, so I think I'm well past easily accomplished good hair days.

  • I remember getting a haircut around 8 mo pp after I had my daughter. The hairdresser was like “oh I love a project haircut” haha my regrowth was a mess! Not excited about that part again...

  • @bluesky24 I cut my hair at 5mo PP because I was so upset about losing all the hair. I regretted it so much. I loved my long hair and it's taken forever to grow out and my ends are still a wreck. Still not back to my pregnancy length. I told DH not to let my hormones let me cut my hair until I'm at least 9mo PP.
  • Oh my regrowth is awful. I have these super short baby hair bangs that are growing back. They’re long enough that they’re annoying but too short to tuck away. So awkward.

  • I never got the luscious pregnancy hair I yearned for and still feel like I lose a fist full every time I shower. FX I get awesome hair this time! I’d like to not look awful and sickly this time around lol

  • @poshspice I feel the same about my hair never recovering. It’s thin as it is, and I legit had a little bit of a receding hairline.. it was so bad!  :s J. Beverly Hills ‘Rescue’ shampoo and conditioner does seem to make it healthier. I dread going through that part again though.
  • @foodislove I also cut my hair postpartum (chopped about a foot off) and majorly regretted it. I feel like it takes 4x as long now to grow. It's still so short and I hate it.
I never stopped taking my prenatals since my first pregnancy, but they've never done anything for my hair. I used to have decent hair, but between the pp hair loss & DS constantly yanking it out, I just resort to always having it pulled back now & never style it or spend any time on it anymore. Maybe in like 10 years I'll have nice hair again....
  • My hair regrowth has been so frustrating lately. It looks so frizzy but it's just all the baby hairs sticking out 🤣  There is no taming this mane.
  • So I usually wear pretty tight skinny jeans whenever I'm not at work. I've been so bloated lately that my jeans become really uncomfortable, especially after dinner. I actually had to unbutton them to feel comfortable the other day! My question is, did you find it better to jump straight to maternity jeans (the kind with the side elastic, not the full belly spandex stuff) or was it better to use tricks like the hair tie or belly band? I'm leaning towards getting a pair of side stretch jeans now and another full belly pair once I get bigger, but it feels a bit like jumping the gun lol

TLDR: how did you stay comfy in pants during first tri?
  • @sagems10 I did the hair tie trick for a while, then unzipped pants with belly band when that stopped being enough. I think this time around I may opt to find a couple good pairs of maternity jeans and just make the switch early for comfort. It’s smart to try a couple styles - I prefer full belly panel because it makes me feel like my pants will stay up better but other people hate them and prefer underbelly or side stretch. I’m pretty excited to be pregnant in the fall/winter this time so I can get away with leggings for the majority

  • @sagems10 I’ve pulled out my belly band once, but I forgot how annoying they can be. I will probably just jump straight into maternity pants as soon as my others are too uncomfortable to get me through the day.

  • @DuchessOfCambridge @k2k2tog thanks for the input! I think I'd rather have an actual set of jeans than fiddle with the tricks. I'll probably end up at target or old navy trying a bunch of styles on my next day off :)
  • @sagems10 I definitely plan on switching to maternity pants earlier this time. When i put them on last time I remember thinking "I should of fine this sooo long ago!". Like @DuchessOfCambridge I also prefer full panel maternity pants. They feel more comfortable to me.
  • @sagems10 I switched to maternity pants super early with my second! There was no reason not to be comfortable and I already had them anyways so I figured Why not!?

  • @sagems10 I have my belly bands and I'll probably use those for awhile. I'll probably try and stay in my regular clothes as long as possible because I let a friend borrow my maternity clothes so asking of them back will be a bit of a giveaway...
  • @sagems10 I did the hair tie trick for a while and then got some large-ish jeggings. Most of my mid-range size was during the summer so I wore a lot of shorts. I went right to full panel shorts, but they didn’t really fit properly until my belly got bigger. I never owned the side panel jeans so I don’t know how they are, but full panel jeans are great. I just bought some adjustable waistband stretchy jeans from Target, and I think those are going to be useful. They have elastic inside the waist and that you cinch up like a drawstring. They button into place, you don’t have to tie them. They look silly right now, but in 7-8 weeks I think they’ll be perfect. Also maternity leggings are amazing.

  • I had a terrible time finding maternity jeans that fit well and were comfortable last time, and most of my stuff was hand me downs and I was pregnant in the summer so I mostly ignored pants. This time I’m determined to be more comfortable and hate clothes a little less. Where did you all find yours? I like stretch but don’t want it to look like I’m wearing leggings. Also, where did you get leggings? I have a hand me down pair I love but they’re honestly too big, and I have a pair from Old Navy that are too “structured” if you know what I mean.

I really liked targets maternity clothes.  They we reasonsble.  Motherhood maternity was expensive and once i woukd wash some of the clothes they would get messed up and pill up and be ruined.

So since I dont need dress clothes i will just buy T-shirts at target.  Maybe get 1 pair of jeans and a pair or 2 of leggings there.

  • In that awkward time where my normal clothes were too tight and maternity seemed excessive I just got a pair of normal jeans in the next size up, and that worked for me until switching to maternity.
  • @sagems10 I also used the hair tie trick & a bellaband for my first tri last time, but I think I'll be pulling out my actual maternity clothes sooner this time bc I want to be more comfortable
@DuchessOfCambridge I got all my maternity clothes from Motherhood Maternity (esp the clearance section) and Kohl's, although I just searched my whole house for my mat. jeans & leggings and can't find them so I'm hoping they'll turn up or else I'll have to buy more :(
  • I’m thinking more and more about hunting down my maternity clothes. It’s been three years since I had my daughter so I think they are at my in laws. I guess I’ll have to wait til after I tell them. 😁  right now I’m just wearing my couple pairs of “fat pants” on rotation.
  • @psychobutthead totally agree with you! Last time i had gotten a pair of jeans and a pair of dress pants from Motherhood Maternity with the full panels.  They were comfortable but once i wanted them they pilled. You'd think for all that money, they'd use better material! I'll have to try Target this time.
I don't like Old Navy's materials either.  They don't last long.
For all the FTM, I'd say go ahead and purchase them earlier,  your body will thank you.
