Ok ya'll I feel like I started late to make a stock pile of diapers. I work at a hospital so I'm able to buy a case of huggies diapers/wipes a month. So far I have 1 case of newborn (288) plus 4 individual pkgs, so like 348 newborn total & 2 cases of 1s (480). It has been 6 years since I've done this baby thing. Our 1st only got up to size 3 before being potty trained.. I vaguely remember her being in 1s forever. She was 6lbs 13oz at birth & literally weighed 28lbs for years 3 & 4. How many cases of newborn, 1, 2, 3, etc. Should we get?
It’s hard to know how many of each size you will need since kids grow differently. DD was predicated to be 8.5 lbs at birth but was 6lb 14 oz. She wasn’t in newborn or 1s very long. She was in 4s the longest and then we potty trained. We also typically had to move her up a size well before she was the weight on the box.
Instead of buying cases, I've just been getting gift cards and adding them to an envelope that says "diaper fund" because like previously mentioned, sizes are so hit or miss and you never know what brands work best for that kid and everything is just a guess.
We buy our diapers at Sam's and so far, I've only bought 1 box of newborns, 1 box of 1s and 2 boxes of 2s. I've also been putting my $5 and $10 bills aside and adding it to my diaper fund.
We aren't stockpiling because some stores limit how much you can return/exchange and you really never know how long they will be in a certain size. DD was in NB for almost 3 months, size 1 for about 2 months, size 2 for about 4 months, and has been in size 3 diapers since she was 9 months old...she's almost 2 years old now.
I love the gift card idea up above! None of mine have been in newborns more than a month (one not at all)...so I start with one box of those and two boxes of ones...and do more with twos and threes (all of mine have been in those forever). But I think having gift cards stockpiled is a great idea! I saw you can buy from work though...I probably wouldn't do any more newborns, it sounds like you have a good stash!

That is a lot of newborns! I’ve never made it through a pack of newborns before giving them to the girls for their dolls. I just start out with 1s. My mom can get diapers cheap through the hospital she works for. But I haven’t even told her I’m pregnant, so, no diapers yet.
Yeh I have 8-9lb babies so they aren’t in newborn more than a few days. If you have a tiny baby you can always get more newborn if you need them, but I would hate to be stuck with a ton extra
I bought 0 newborn diapers to prepare, since hospital gives you some and I didn't know if DD would even be in them longer than a week or two. I've heard some babies skip NB, and some are only in them less than a month. DD was in NB for about a month, so we just bought smaller packs of Target brand each time......btw, Target brand is actually one of our favorites, and not just bc the cost!! I did buy in advance from Amazon: 2 cases of size 1 (each case is "one month supply"), 2 cases of size 2, and 1 case of size 3. DD was in each size for a LONG time, though size 3 was her quickest I think. She's in size 4 right now at 19 months.
Keep in mind, if you buy store size diaper packs, Target allows for exchanging if the package isn't opened, even if you don't know if they were purchased there. Other stores might do that, too. If you stock pile from online shopping or specialty orders, it's much harder to exchange them if you end up with a leftover box. Once we used up the diapers we had on hand, we used (and still use) the Amazon Family subscription for diapers, which gives 20% off diapers. Consistently the diapers I get on Amazon (huggies) are cheaper on amazon than anywhere else, due to the discount.
I am a stockpiler but I also take my couponing/deal finding really seriously on diapers so I don’t spend much per diaper and don’t feel stressed about extra.... but I also knew last time I’d be having another. I had 648 size 1s, we used about 400 of those, had 356 size 2s and used almost all, size 3 is where it really ballooned (per internet recommendations) and we used I’d say at least 800 of those before we moved to 4s. Newborns were odd because we had a few from the hospital but definitely used more. They say it’s like 8-10 a day and we used those for a month so I’d guess about 250 of those.
baby was average at birth (7,9) and tended in the 60th percentile for weight until recently - she’s in the 80some now at 13mo in size 4s.
Im a fan of stockpiling if you can find the right prices because it felt damn good to never have to buy diapers under pressure. I’ve literally never said “honey we need diapers can you pick some up on the way home?”... and that’s just one less thing.
@KLS123 for me, too! I don't know how many diapers a baby uses in a day?! But I'm sure we'll learn really quickly. I've been stocking up a little during Target's sales (stacking Cartwheel + coupons + gift card reward back).
I am so impressed by the coupon skills I'm hearing about. I rely mostly on Amazon for things. If I can avoid a store and have Amazon deliver straight to my door, I'm sold!
I bought a bunch at target when they were having a gift card promo (they have one going now, btw). I think I did a box of NB, a box of 1s, and 2 boxes of 2s? I couldn't remember which DD was in for a short amount of time, NBs or 1s. Plus this one is going to be a boy, and not my first, which I think both indicate he might be bigger?
And re: target returning. This is true, but it has to be a SKU that they sell. So sometimes you'll get a slightly different sized box than they sell, and then they won't take it. I haven't personally experienced this issue, but I know a few who have.

I cloth diaper so I can’t comment on diaper number, but I’m here to +1 target diapers. When we need to use disposables for DD they are the only ones we use. She gets rashes really easily with other brands but never with target. We also haven’t had leaking problems!

We did not stock pile diapers. We received some from a baby shower and bought 1 package of newborns to have on hand. Your baby may not fit well in Huggies or it may cause diaper rash, so it would be a shame to have a big stock pile of diapers that you cannot return or exchange. Wait until baby arrives and then buy diapers monthly (we use amazon prime subscription) so that we can change the sizes and quantities as needed.
I did cloth diapers with my first! Only because we were pretty short on money. It did help with potty training though! As far as cost of buying/wasting money. It costs me $6 a case of diapers that has over 200 diapers in each case...... there's is a lot of uses for diapers besides for babies when you live on a farm.
