GD ladies check in!

Hi ladies! We haven't had a check-in in awhile. So how is everyone doing? Anyone else on insulin now? Any newbies to the GD world have questions that we can help you with?

Re: GD ladies check in!

  • Here is my update: So they have upped my insulin dosage to 18 units and my fasting number are still not budging. At this point I think it is more a sleep issue. The other day I got to sleep in to 9am and they were the lowest they have been! I know I should try to go to bed earlier but I am such a night owl.

Also, I would die for some watermelon and ice cream!!

But the good news is that little man looks healthy and right on track. I have another ultrasound on the 27th.

  • @bfpafter4years I'm definitely having ice cream cravings too. And bagels. And Oreos. I've started making a list of all the treats I want DH to bring to the hospital for me after the birth!

It's been about 3 weeks since I was first diagnosed and I'm still getting the swing of things. I met with a nutritionist and have been managing ok so far with diet, so hoping that things stay relatively stable and I'm able to avoid insulin. My diet pre-diagnosis was pretty carb heavy, so it has been a struggle figuring out what to eat. I haven't seen my doctor since I failed the glucose test and have had to switch providers when my insurance changed this month, so I'm a little anxious to meet with the new doctor next week and get her perspective on how she typically works with GD moms. I have my heart set on an unmedicated birth and know that GD can make it more likely I'll have an induction or c section, so hoping she is willing to work with me as long as things are under control.

  • Hi ladies, I just got diagnosed with GD and had my meetings yesterday/today. I found them to be very confusing. It actually seems like a lot of carbs. The most confusing part is that for my bedtime snack, I’m supposed to be eating 30g carbs BUT my nutritionist said that specifically for bedtime snack I should do no sugar and high fat. Well finding something with no sugar but 30g carbs has been extremely difficult without eating a ton of calories and generally a lot of food especially. I definitely plan on calling my nutritionist back, but it’s the long weekend so I can’t talk to anyone until Tuesday. They said I have a week to get my numbers under control, and if not I need to take insulin. Here is the plan I need to follow. I’m curious if it’s similar to what everyone else is doing.

Breakfast 15-30 grams of carb (she said to keep breakfast low sugar)

Morning Snack 15-30 grams of carb

    Lunch 45-60 grams of carb

Afternoon snack 15-30 grams of carb

    Dinner 45-60 grams of carb

Bedtime snack 30 grams of carb which should be high fat and no sugar.

Day 1 and I’m so confused. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
  • @BabyBoyH92016 I'm sorry to hear about your diagnosis. It's super confusing in the beginning and frustrating to figure out what to eat.

My guidelines are a lot more vague than yours. I was told 3 meals per day at 30-45g of carbs and 2 snacks at 15g. Was told sugar and calories didn't matter as much just the overall carbs, but that I should try to balance with fats and protein to better control sugar. My fasting numbers have been creeping up to the the 95-105 range though, so I have one more week to see if I can control them before starting oral meds.

I would say stick to the plan you were given as best you can and see what works. In terms of your bedtime no sugar/high fat snack, this might sound weird, but I've become a big fan of savory oatmeal combos. Things like oatmeal/egg/cheese/avocado. Maybe something like that could work? Greek youghurt works well too, I'm a fan of Siggis brand with some nuts mixed in.

Hang in there, it gets easier!
  • @BabyBoyH92016 - Sorry to hear about your diagnosis. It does suck but you can do it! I had to go to an hour long class when I found out so they threw a lot of info at me. My target numbers are to be <95 when fasting and then under 140 an hour after all meals. I attached the meal plan examples that they gave me.

I kept it on my fridge in the beginning but was so miserable. In the end, I just semi watch what I eat and eat less. I do NOT recommend doing what I'm doing cause it's always better to be more accurate and go with what your Dr says.

  • Thanks you guys this is super helpful. My after dinner and my fasting morning numbers have been a tad high. I also see I have a higher carb recommendations than you guys, which seems counter productive. I’ve been sticking to the lower end for carbs and hopefully that will improve my numbers.
  • @BabyBoyH92016 sorry that you have to be here! I find the whole thing confusing! I have basically been eating keto (I was doing it before) but also adding in fruit and sugar free bread when I can. I am terrible at getting snacks in because I just don't have the time to be honest or I just forget and then it is time for the next meal.

My meal numbers have all been good but my fasting is still high and I am currently taking metaphorine and insulin at night. I am sure I am doing this wrong but what can I do.

My meals are pretty simple, eggs and sugar free toast for breakfast, lunch is leftovers usually with just meat and veggies and then the same for dinner. I find any kind if potatoes, rice, or most breads spike my sugar so I just don't eat them.

However, score over the weekend, I found out I can eat Chick fil a!! I had nuggets, fruit, diet Lemonade and even a couple of fries and I read still in range!!
  • @bfpafter4years - I'm so sorry but I have no good advice for high fasting numbers. I feel like nothing I did would make them better. I tried eating something right before bed (that's what they recommended) and even waking up in the middle of the night and having a small snack (they recommended that too). But in the end, figuring out the correct dosage for insulin is what brought my numbers down.

  • It’s very frustrating. I’ve been eating way less carbs (but lots of fats, so I’m definitely eating plenty and getting nutrition) Yesterday was the first day all of my after meal sugars were perfect. I was so excited because I thought I found the perfect amount of carbs I needed. Well this morning my sugar was 94 (I need to be under 90), and I had a moderate amount of ketones in my urine.
  • @BabyBoyH92016 - the number of hours between insulin and your fasting number check makes a difference too. If I do it too early, my numbers are higher cause it's a slow releasing insulin. Maybe that is making a difference.

  • @kamahina I’m not on insulin yet. This is my first week with GD diagnosis, so they are trying to see if I can get it under control with just diet. Thanks for the tip though.
  • @BabyBoyH92016 - dang, I knew that too. I'm sorry!

  • Hi all, I was diagnosed with GD three weeks ago.  I have been able to maintain a 1-hour-after-meal number of <140, but I have not been able to keep my fasting number consistently <95.  I was just prescribed 10 units of Lantus (in the evening only) insulin yesterday. :(

I was scared to give myself the insulin but the application actually did not hurt.  What did hurt was the application site (top of upper thigh) for about 20 minutes afterward.

Alas, my fasting number this morning was 99, so I was instructed to increase my dose to 15 units of insulin tonight (and continue to increase by 5 units per night until my number is <95).

  • @serabjorn - I'm sorry you are going through it! Finding that right dosage is diffucult. When I inject on my thigh, I tend to get bruises and the injection area hurts quite a bit. If I inject my stomach, it doesn't hurt at all. It's harder to find spots on my stomach now though since baby is getting bigger.  Hope you find your dosage soon!

  • I think I'm headed for a GD diagnosis. I met with the nutritionist and am currently testing blood glucose for a week. Unfortunately the hormones of two placentas are making things difficult, even if I barely eat carbs.

What's more frustrating is that the nutritionist wants my numbers <95 and <135 but my OB wants them <90 and <120. I'm generally right around 100 and 135 so it's frustrating. If I eat my allotted carbs per meal I'm shooting up >150 so that's a joy.

  • @KellyT22 Originally my endocrinologist wanted my fasting number to be <90.  When I consistently missed that (but did well with all other numbers, and was still losing weight each week) she bumped my fasting number to <95.  So sorry you are going through this. :(
Nov. '18 September Siggy Challenge: Falling into Fall

  • @serabjorn Sorry to hear you're struggling with the insulin. Hopefully after a few more days you'll find the right amount.

@KellyT22 I'm sorry to hear. It can be super frustrating. My fasting needs to be below 90 and I typically am around 90-95. I wish there were more consistency. Unfortunately it's so hard to control with diet and I can imagine two placentas would make things unpredictable. Hang in there--the good news is that we're getting closer!
  • @KellyT22 I’ve been diagnosed for a week and it is incredibly frustrating. I’m meeting with my nutritionist tomorrow and feel like I’m likely to get put on insulin bc my fasting numbers are always a little bit high (I have to be under 90 and I’m usually 93-95). What’s even more disappointing then a GD diagnosis is the fact that you can follow the diet correctly and your numbers can still be all over the place. I’ve had ONE day this past week where my 4 blood draws were perfect. The following day I duplicated the same exact meals and snacks hoping for another good day, and that was not the case. Sometimes it just doesn’t make sense. At this point I’m just really hoping I can figure out my insulin dosage quickly.
  • @meg1115 Thank you!  I am up to 20 units now and my fasting number was at 89 this morning.  :s  That is below the <90 and <95 threshholds, but I tested about 30 minutes before I usually do.  I just hope that I don't have to keep going up in dose.

Also, last night when I removed the needle from my skin it pooled a bit of blood.  I have only given myself insulin ~5 times now, but this was the first time that I bled afterward (no more pain than the small amount that I am getting used to, though).  Is this normal?

  • @serabjorn I am up to 34 units at night, they still can't get my fasting where they want it :(. I hope yours stays good!

About the blood, yes, that is normal. Every once in awhile you will hit a small blood vessel and it will bleed for a moment but it should stop very quickly. I had it happen last night too.
  • Does anyone have experience with oral medications to control fasting numbers? My OB started me on glyburide today and my googling had led to a lot of mixed reviews. I know that insulin tends to be the preferred method during pregnancy.
  • @meg1115 - no experience with oral meds, I'm sorry. I asked to take a pill rather then do insulun when I started by the OB said if I take the pill it would also go to baby. Insulin would just stay with me and baby wouldn't be exposed to it. I pretty much just left it at that and didn't look into it any further. I'm sure it would depend on the type of pill they want you to take but I don't really know anything about it. I'm a little skeptical too and realized that if the Dr or midwife wants me to do or take something they say the magic words "for the baby". Such a poor attitude to have but I think they can get away with getting us to do a lot of things by saying it's "for the baby".

  • @kamahina9 Ugh yeah, they have me on glyburide and I was reading about it crossing the placenta. The practice I go to had me seeing multiple OBs and they both recommended it as having "more benefits than risks" but it had my sugar levels low today so I'm not sure if the dose is too high or I have to eat more carbs to compensate. One of my biggest concerns right now is that I've heard it will increase my likelihood of being induced because I'm supposed to stop taking it two weeks before birth. I have a follow up with the doctor next week, so maybe I'll get more answers then!
  • @meg1115 I take both the pill and insulin, but I take metaphorin. My doctor said it is better for the pregnancy. They started me just on the pill and gradually increased it to 3 pills at night but it really wasn't having much affect and it was giving me stomach issues. I am now back down to one plus insulin. They still can't get the dosage right and my fasting numbers are still high but not as high as they were.
  • @bfpafter4years The guessing game is so frustrating! Maybe we'll all figure out the right doses before these babies come! 😂

    Hi ladies

Sorry if this question has already been addressed. I’m on day two of taking insulin. I take insulin before dinner, and at nighttime. Injecting the insulin doesn’t actually hurt, but I noticed that I get a strange sore like sensation right afterward. The weird part is that it’s not sore at the injection site. For instance, I just injected the left side of my abdomen, and immediately after I started experiencing a sensation on my upper left thigh. Is this normal?? I find it bizarre. Not sure if I’m injecting correctly.

Second question. Last night was the first time I took nighttime insulin (10 units). It had absolutely no affect on my fasting number. It was still high and along the lines of what I normally get without insulin. I have to email my doctor on Monday with results, but I’m assuming they will bump up my nighttime insulin.

@BabyBoyH92016 can't say about your first question. Never had anything like that. Occasionally I have some pain around the injection sites. Actually, both sides of my stomach ate sore all the time now and have bruising. What size needle ate you using? Do you use a pen?

As for your second question, it takes a day or two to really affect you. My numbers are almost always the same the first day after an increase. Also, other things can affect it. If you didn't sleep well, if you ejected to late at night and then tested early, the snack you had afterwards, etc. Give it a couple of days and see what happens!
  • @bfpafter4years My before dinner insulin is a pen. My bedtime insulin is different and I do that with a syringe and vial. I noticed the weird soreness with the bedtime insulin. It was strange. I’ll ask my endocrinologist on Monday when I email her the numbers.
  • Officially started insulin, but I think the dose is way too high. I keep having <80 crashes. On the plus side, I get to have candy when it crashes!

  • Curious what your OBs thoughts are about ketones. I’ve seen 3 different dieticians and they all have given me different advice regarding carbs and nutrition. I left my last appointment instructioned to eat more carbs. I was eating a little under 175 carbs daily and my ketones were usually about 15 (small amount), sometimes a little higher and closer to the moderate amount in color. They told me they’d rather me eat more and have to take insulin and that my ketones should always be negative or 5 (trace). I will like to say that I was never hungry. I just ate things high in fat and protein, so even though my carb count was on the lower end, I was getting plenty of calories/fat/protein.

Well today I had a regular OB appointment. I did not see my regular doctor and saw someone else in the practice for the first time. She told me that their was a discussion among her and some other OBs that they have a very high amout of patients on insulin and that they believe some of the nutritionists are giving bad advice. I told her about the Ketones and having to eat more carbs to make it to 175 and her response was “oh I don’t care about the ketones”. You should do what works for you.

I feel like I’m getting such different advice between everyone I’ve seen about my GD, that i don’t know who to believe anymore.
  • I haven’t really posted but I think I need some support now.
I was told I have GD a few weeks ago. I’m doing pretty well at keeping to my diet but my fasting numbers seems to still be a little over 95 so they might put me on insulin...not looking forward to that and keeping my fingers crossed it doesn’t. I need to figure out what evening snack to have as that seems to be my issue.
anyways I had an ultrasound last week and they measured the baby and everything and informed me my baby is 6 pounds 6 ounces at 32 weeks and 4 days. Freaking out now....I really don’t want a c section, but with the baby being so big already how large will it be at 40 weeks?!?!
Anyone had an ultrasound and found out that the baby was big? Anything that can be done?
  • @BabyBoyH92016 unfortunately, no advice to give. My doctor didn't say anything about monitoring ketones, so I haven't been. I just look at the numbers. I am sure I am not getting the right number of anything (fats, protien, or carbs) but it has been such a struggle on this diet lately, I am lucky to eat anything.

@bridalbump I go in for my growth scan today and I am really nervous about how big he is now (although I don't look that big and I am hoping that is a good sign). Just remember that US are wrong...a lot. They told me my daughter was going to be close to 7 pounds when she was born at 37 weeks but she weighed on 5 lbs 15 oz (was delivered early due to high blood pressure). I hope they are wrong! As far as evening snack, no real advice here because nothing ever worked for me and I have given up eating one.

So here is my rant...I am so tired of this diet. I am miserable. Finding things to eat is becoming increasingly more difficult and I find myself "cheating" here and there. Also, I have been so stressed at work that I haven't been getting my numbers in. I know my doctor is going to yell at me today when she sees all my missing numbers :(. I feel like I have been doing this forever! It really sucked being diagnosed so early. Rant over.

@bfpafter4years interesting you don’t have to monitor ketones!! I’m sick of this diet too and I’m only 31 weeks. So far I’m actually fine with food. I’m not really craving things I can’t eat. I’m just SO tired of how rigid timing is. I know I have to eat my snacks at a certain time so that my meal numbers are good, so it’s annoying packing snacks because I’m leaving the house for a bit. Same with testing. I hate dragging my glucose meter around, and in the evening, my after dinner testing falls somewhere around the time when I’m in the middle of doing bedtime routine with my toddler. The thinking about food, timing of eating, and testing, really sucks a lot of energy. Good luck with your scan today!
  • I am terrible at snacks and almost never eat them because I am at school and don't have time to stop a lesson to eat something. My doctor told me today that I actually might be too rigid with my diet and to go ahead and have some bread, rice and potato to make my diet more manageable. She did increase my insulin though.
  • @BabyBoyH92016 I also haven't had to track ketones (I had to look up what they were!) So interesting how the advice we are given us all over the board.

@bridalbump I have my growth scan tomorrow and am also really anxious about this. It's my first pregnancy, so I don't have much experience, but definitely understand your stress. Hopefully the ultrasound is off a bit!

@bfpafter4years I'm over the diet too. I cried TWICE this weekend because I just couldn't figure out what I should eat. (Loving those pregnancy hormones!) Also have been having random low blood sugar dips which have been awful too. Ready for November!
  • Oh, I forgot to update about my growth scan too! So little man is right on track at 3 lbs, 8 oz (I am 31 weeks today). However they were slightly concerned with my fluid levels being right on the edge of being too high. They said they will look again next week. If they are still on the high end then I have to start twice a week monitoring sooner than planned, but that is all the doctor said?

Does that mean I could be induced earlier too?
  • @bfpafter4years I haven't heard anything about how fluid levels affect induction except when they're low, hopefully your doctor will say more next time.

I had my growth scan today and the baby is measuring 5lbs 6oz at 33 weeks. The doctor said that was on the big size but didn't seem too concerned. Makes me nervous about induction/c-section. I have a follow up in two weeks so I guess I'll have to wait until then.
  • @bfparty4years - I know that the fluid numbers are important but I don't know what it means if it's high or low. They did a check on mines and said it was good so I didn't really pay attention after that.

I have crazy but good news about my gestational diabetes. My fasting numbers improved all on their own and I no longer need to take insulin. I am still monitoring my numbers and still have to do the diet but at least I don't need the shot every night anymore. Yay!

  • @kamahina9 That's amazing! It's crazy what our bodies do sometimes.
