Cloth Diapers

Re: Cloth Diapers

  • @kadeephd I though about making some too, but then realized I don't have a large amount of extra flannel laying around so I'm just gonna buy some cheap washcloths.

I made cloth wipes by buying cheap washcloths, cutting them into fourths and then zigzagging the edges (would serge, but don't have one yet). My sister made some out of some sort of thin flannel, single layer, with serged edges. I don't know why you would need multiple layers? Disposable wipes are super thin, and single layer cloth wipes are already going to be thicker than disposables. It seems like it'd just be extra effort and extra fabric without any benefit, but that's me.
  • I still just use disposable wipes. I don't know why I haven't just done cloth. I think I'm worried about the poop, honestly. Mainly for when they start solids, because diapers have to be sprayed so the wipes would too. Also, I know daycare will do cloth but I don't think they'd agree to cloth wipes.

  • We just used a couple packs of baby washcloths with DS.
  • @katy0990 I also use some of the cheap/thinner baby washcloths and I like those too!
@AdorkablePixie I mostly use disposable wipes, but when I get a wild hair up my ass and use cloth, I just give the poopy wipe a few swirls in the toilet water.  Do you have a sprayer?  I am still debating buying one!  I'm a swisher.  :D

  • @clbness I was a swisher with DS, and even still with potty training when he poops in his underwear, but part of that is because we were in an apartment and they wouldn't let us attach a sprayer. I'm definitely getting one this time! I'm hoping it'll help DH be more on board, he never really was with DS either but he did it.

  • @CecilB93 I might just have to get one!  I've had one saved in my Amazon cart for ages, but I've gotten by OK with swishing, so didn't pull the trigger.  Would you get a SprayPal or something like it to avoid splatter, or go without?  I just keep thinking, "Ugh, if I get a sprayer, then I have to get something to stop the splatter and we don't have room for all that in our little upstairs bathroom."  I'm so back and forth.  :p

  • @clbness I've thought about getting a sprayer, but we also have a tiny bathroom that I'm worried about getting baby poop all over!  Is there a way to just turn down the water pressure so there's no crazy spray coming off the diaper?

  • I went to a diaper resale and ended up with 11 CDs and about 10 extra microfiber inserts (in addition to the 2 that came with each diaper) for $90! Woo! I'll probably get about 8 or so more since we're going to start CDing once he's past the NB stage.

Question! How bad is it really to use microfiber against baby's skin? I have a TON of what appears to be microfiber inserts, but if it's really not a great thing, I'll register for some bamboo or something.

@clbness Do you have a utility sink you can use? We have one in the laundry room and it has a sprayer on it, but it is deep enough to prevent splatter.
  • I’ll also add — I did try cloth wipes for a bit, which I made by cutting extra receiving blankets into rectangles, but they seemed to irritate my son’s bum. So now they’re in a drawer by the toilet and I use them to wipe up any extra diaper spray that gets around the toilet. I just throw them in with the diapers.

  • @binxybaby definitely keep microfiber AWAY from baby's skin. If the diapers are pockets you can use them as inserts, but if you have just covers and MF inserts you'll need something else to keep it off baby's skin.

@clbness idk on the SprayPal! I figured I'd get the sprayer and see how it works without, then get one later if needed. I'm hoping to EBF, so hopefully I won't even need to spray for a good 6 months! We'll see, we did have to use some formula here and there with my son, in which case I'll of course need to spray.

  • Re: cloth and daycare

(multiple people are talking about this and I’m to lazy to go up and find each screenname to tag via mobile rn)

I’ve worked in 3 childcare centers (on the west coast, which tends to be more liberal than some other parts of the country, keep in mind). The first two centers, parents brought in whatever diapers they used (disposable or cloth) and we never had an issue with cloth because they get sent home each night and the laundry is the parents problem. At the first center I worked at, one CD baby also had cloth wipes, it also wasn’t an issue, although it was weird to me because it was new to me. The center in at now cloth diapers the babies/toddlers with school cloth diapers. We pay to send them out to a diaper service. We also have cloth wipes. Our wipes are regular washcloths, not even baby ones. I have joked with my coworkers that the babies don’t like the washcloths because we need a higher thread count, lol. But that’s not in the budget. The size of them is good for serious poops.

All this is to say, please check in with your local childcare centers & in home care. They might not have been asked before. Usually if the laundry goes home and is the parents problem, they won’t mind.
  • @tumbleweed-1 thanks for your input! Definitely something I need to check on so good to know how to approach it with different places.
  • Also got some (nearly brand new) prefolds and covers (thirsties) off fb marketplace. I'm looking into doing prefolds and flat - whats everyone's favorite company for flats/prefolds? And are fitteds worth it?
  • @clbness How have you survived all this time without a sprayer?! It has been a godsend, especially when DS has poop accidents in his undies. I did add a bucket to my registry this go round though, because spraying the diapers can be messy and the first shield I ordered was a piece of crap!

@binxybaby Definitely NO MF on babies skin!! :) Hopefully they are pockets and you can just stuff them, I am assuming if each diaper came with two inserts, they're probably pockets anyway. I have seen people who sew flower sac towels around the MF and then use them against baby's skin! So there is that option. Also, always make sure to check the elastics on diapers when you guy them used. If it is relaxed, you could get leaks. I've heard the elastics are easy to replace and there are videos online to help. :)
