Yeah all the books say letting the baby sleep on a flat surface is the safest way, but my son sleeps soooo much better in the high chair. Is it better for my son to:
    1) get 20 min naps here and there in a bassinet/crib totaling an hour or so per day, and be super fussy at bedtime because he is over exhausted, or
    2) sleep in an almost flat high chair, getting about a total of 4 hours of naps in a day, and not be fussy at bedtime?

Call me a bad mommy but I like the option 2.

@mbradfo2 My son occasionally flips onto his back too. But it’s mostly flipping in one direction so he’s not coming back to his initial spot. And he has been army crawling across the tummy time mat. Maybe time to invest in a larger mat or a play pen mat. We recently put away his bassinet since he learned to flip in one. We switched to a bigger portable crib/playard but my son can’t sleep in that as he keeps rolling/crawling to the sides/corner, gets stuck and screams in frustration.

  • I agree with you @cashewchicken! I’d much rather have Abigail sleep in her swing and get a good 1-2 hour nap than get nothing in her crib and be super cranky!

I thought we had made it out of her second leap with minimal issues but she has been so cranky and needy the last two days! I definitely don’t mind the baby snuggles but she wants to BF all. The. Time. And only wants mommy (which daddy is not too happy about!) And my nips are not used to that! I also think I have a clogged duct right under the nipple which is tough to get at to massage! Once DH is home I’ll try soaking it in epsom salt to see if that helps at all.

  • I would not survive without her bouncer and rocker. That's her napping spot during the day.

And for the record, my dad is a pediatrician and they let her sleep in a rock'n'play (watched) when they are watching her. Soooo...yeah, I don't think it's a huge deal.

  • Yeah when Bryson is sleeping in his car seat in the car, we just bring him in as well and set him on the table... I woke him up once or twice and it was horrible. He screamed and screamed, so I am not doing that again haha. He has actually been sleeping in the crib at daycare which is great. They also at times put him in the swing for a short snooze which is what I do at home if he is being a crank. He also loves to sleep in his boopy pillow with his blankie.
TTC 4 years. 7 failed IUI's with either Clomid, Femara and/or Trigger Shots. Started IVF journey in February 2017. Polyps removed in May. 1st IVF Transfer September 26th. BFP. Expected due date 6/14/18. Baby boy born 5/25/18 at 6 lb 9 oz. My bundle of joy.
  • I don't think there's a single kid out there who hasn't slept in a car seat or the like for at least a nap. I mean, they fall asleep riding in the car, what are you supposed to do? Pull over and wake them up?? I think the big thing is not letting them sleep in a dangerous position without an adult around just in case.
  • So glad you all are talking about this....I've been super stressed about using the rock n play and swing and how much to do both. A newborn sleeps all day and sometimes he just needs a change from flat in bassinet with swaddle. Especially if gassy and fussy. We try and limit it and watch him and if I have to use the rock n play at night I put him right by me next to bed.
  • Yeah we watch him as well and we also bought a head pillow because we wanted to make sure his head in proper form. Don’t stress about it. :)

@hottietoddy ahh William is so cute!  Can you believe how much they change in just a couple weeks. Lucille is getting so big already. I tried to put on a newborn onesie this morning and it was too small :(

Ahhh the bump deleted the rest of my comments so let’s try this again...

I also let lucille sleep in her rocker during the day but keep her flat in the bassinet at night.  She tends to be much more fussy during the day.

I dropping down my pumping to 4x’s a day but am doing 2 of those as a power pump seems to give me about the same amount and it seems like a better option than quitting.

@hopefulmom I think all the lactation supplements are a bit of a scam or they just don’t work for me. I’m doing a lactation support herbal blend from Whole Foods, oatmeal, brewers yeast, and flax for breakfast, oh and some tea that smells like a parakeet cage that should have been cleaned out a week ago. The only results I have seen so far are a lighter wallet.

Fun in fact the owlet is able to be reimbursed through a HSA or FSA account. I thought they were “unnecessary” and then I met my baby lol. It’s been great piece of mind.

Brooks slept in his rock n play at night for 5 month with no issue.  He still naps in it on the weekends, but is now in his crib at night.

The rock n play is a lifesaver for reflux babies. You just have to make sure to not leave them in it unattended to sleep when they start to roll.
  • Graham is 10 months and still wakes at night! So I hear all of you, lol. My daughter was a unicorn sleeper, nap all day and sleep 12 hours straight by 12 weeks. I just recently had to start waking Graham from naps, luckily he’s always happy, but if I let him nap too long he ends up more at night. The waking him up has him down to 1-2 wakings a night (vs 5 if he naps too long). I think bordering getting ready to drop to 1 nap so I’ll need to wake him till he’s fully there.

And both kids slept in the RNP for 12 weeks.. not advised I know. Graham did. not. sleep. unless he was in my arms, the RNP only bought my short stretches but they were stretches. I never tonight I’d co-sleep but I ended up taking over our guest bed so I could make it fully safe, the RNP usually bought me a shower or dinner by myself ;) even now he ends up on top of me sleeping at 5am most mornings. Anything to let big sis get her sleep ;)

@2MomsHoping there are so many products I swore were unnecessary or stupid. Until I had kids lol. I’ve eaten so many of my words haha
  • @2MomsHoping
I really wanted to get an Owlet but my husband is super opposed to anything that connects to the "cloud" that will be monitoring baby. I also think I'd probably end up obsessing about every change it notes on the monitor and since I tend towards OCD, my doctors would be pretty opposed to it. So, I'm living life staring at the closed circuit baby monitor until I fall asleep.

    @PolythenePam

I remember thinking how useless/silly bouncers seemed. Baby should be in crib, arms or playpen, right? Why do I need a special seat that bounces?? Now I think it's the best 40 bucks I spent and tell everyone to get one for their sanity!

  • DH really wanted the owlet but I knew I’d obsess over it. My sister gave us an angel care mat (I think that’s what it’s called). It’s a sensor that goes under the mattress and will alert if there’s no movement for 10 seconds or more. It’s super sensitive and picks up her breathing even. I think once we move her to her crib we won’t use it. They also sent us the swing my nephew had and it’s been a lifesaver!

We got a TON of stuff from my sister and they are driving out from WI in a few weeks and are bringing a ton more.
  • I can totally see where the owlet can be triggering for anyone with ocd tendencies. Sometimes all this helpful tech can really just make things more stressful.

  • @holls214 we have the same one!!
  • Hey ladies! Forgive me if I have been a little MIA. I read and love tit when I don’t get time to post!

Welcome @2MomsHoping. She is just too beautiful with that head full of hair. As others have said be kind to yourself when it comes to feeding. My little man was slow gaining weight in the beginning as well and we had to do some formula. It’s easy to feel like we have failed somehow but lots of babies do just fine on all formula so as long as they are getting something they will be fine.

@Hopeful_mom whenever I pump I get 2 oz max but when baby feeds he seems content and he is gaining weight (when he drinks formula he will take up to 4 oz). I don’t know if it’s my pump or I'm doing something wrong but I did read somewhere that babies are better at getting milk out than the pump so they are likely getting more than what you are pumping. Either way I’m sorry the pedi made you feel bad, this is hard enough as is. I just breastfeed and if he doesn’t seem happy and content afterwards then I offer some formula.

Welcome and congrats again @hottietoddy! William is so handsome!

@omarismyhomeboy happy birthday to baby June!

As for the flu shot babies have to be 6 months old to get it and have to get 2 shots 1 month apart the first time like someone else said. I will be getting mine since he is still too young.

AFM Ozi is 2 months old now. I live for his smiles! We are still dealing with him wanting to be held all the time. I am reading the discussion here and thinking I wish he would sleep in his swing. We have a mamaroo and he hates it. Maybe I should buy another swing but I hate wasting money on more stuff he will hate. When we put him down anywhere sound asleep and he is up crying within 5 mins. The halo bassinet is hard and he hates that too. He also spits up in it and I have tried a wedge pillow under the mattress and bought a newborn insert for it with no improvement. We are still cosleeping which I know is awful and I want to stop but I would get no sleep otherwise. Now during the day he goes down for a few minutes to ‘play’ which is looking around on his playmat but that’s it. I go back to work in one month so I’m still hoping it gets better soon.

I have been so emotional recently because this time last year this time was our egg retrieval. We were so anxious because 2 days later Irma hit and our embryos had to be frozen on day one. I was sure the extra freezing and thawing would damage them and we wouldn’t get any embryos and here we are one year later with our beautiful 2 month old.

Also as grateful as I am I also felt extreme jelousy and anger this week when my husband told me a friend of ours is pregnant with her third. They have a 5 and a 2 yo and told us they didn’t want any more. I feel like they have it so easy. No struggle to get pregnant and she even does home births because her pregnancies have been easy and uncomplicated and it saves them money. Meanwhile I have 2 more embryos I may not be able to use because this whole process was so difficult and I can’t afford surrogacy. I wonder when/if I will stop feeling like this. I genuinely want to be happy for anyone who is having a baby, no matter what their circumstances. I am on a emotional rollercoaster.

In spoiler is a pic of Ozi the first time that he enjoyed his bath and didn’t cry.

  • I also took pics of the nursery to share some time ago and never got around to it so here goes. Right now the only thing that gets consistent use is the changing table so I feel so silly for making such a fuss about it before he was born.

  • @safire3 do you have any Mom friends that you could borrow a swing from or find one second hand? I know we wouldn’t have bought one if my sister hadn’t sent us theirs. And we didn’t have it for the first two months but it is nice to have somewhere else to put her.

Ozi is so adorable! I still get those feelings. Some good friends just announced their pregnancy and we know they did timed intercourse and went to the same clinic and I still had thoughts of wow they had it so easy and actually got to have sex to conceive. I think those feelings will also be present but hopefully as time passes it gets easier.
  • @safire3 Ozi is adorable. We have the same furniture from Target. Love it! Sorry you are having a rough time. Yes I would see about borrowing some stuff if possible since you don’t know what will work. Also look at Costco maybe, they have the best return policy even if things are used...
I feel you on other people and pregnancy. I had a super rough pregnancy and recovery and would love to have a surrogate but it’s so expensive... ugh. Sometimes things are just so hard.

  • @safire3 omg how precious is ozi!! So glad he's enjoying the bath! I feel like ER thing ur writing I could've written myself!!! I'm only 4weeks ahead and I can say even though they may not like the bassinet today they could like tomorrow. I keep trying to put her down in everything I have and each time she'll maybe stay 5 min longer then the last time.  I laugh as I know she's suppose to move to a crib but I just got her to sleep 2hrs in the bassinet and I felt that was a huge victory!! She still rather be held then anything else so I manage as best as I can!
I too am feeling very emotional as her transfer day approaches.  I think we tried so hard and long to get to this point that our feelings on it will always be a bit tough when hearing about others and how simple it is!!

@Holls214 what a cutie! And looking like an angel I might add!! I do have been putting mine in the taco I call it so she can still see me she just loves being held so doing everything one handed is rough! How r u feeling?

  • @safire3 I’ve missed you!  I remember your egg retrieval And having to freeze early your little ozi is such a miracle and so adorable to boot. I also still get those feelings of jelousy. I think if you want siblings and worry that you may not be able to it’s just another layer of the IF and I think the general population is even LESS understanding about the pain of struggling to have a second child. It’s crummy. You’ve been through a lot and you are entitled to feel those feelings some anniversaries are just plain hard. Side note the nursery is so cute!  Ours still isn’t done #momfail

  • @safire3 what a cutie!! Precious pictures! I own the swing and borrowed rockers etc, graham would only ONLY sleep on me for 3 months. I tried various carriers, I could get him to lay on me sideways and put the ring sling around him to strap him to me.. if a wrap carrier is an option to try. Otherwise around 3-4 months we did some light sleep training, so it does pass! Graham was up every 45 min at that point even co sleeping so just letting him fuss it out a few nights did the trick. (He’s still a trrrible sleeper but better than that, ha)
  • @2momshoping don’t feel bad - Abigail is almost 4 months and her nursery still isn’t done!!
  • @Holls214 Bryson sure is a cutie!

@safire3 Ozi is adorable and I love your nursery. If you don't have any friends to borrow a swing from to try one out you should check the marketplace on Facebook. I always see great deals on baby gear there.
  • @safire3 - hang in there. The first 3-4 months after can be rough that way. Parker was the same and is now a great sleeper from 3 Months to now which the exception of a few regressions but they are all short phases. From newborn to 4m We used the boppy pillow all day to keep him cozy, feeling secure (he hated being swaddled) and then also ended up buying a Dock a Tot used for night/co sleeping. Parker never loved the Mamaroo either but hate it, we used it more around 4 months. Thing is with baby stuff is there’s almost always a stage where they love something and one they hate it! Be adaptable - you may be missing those snuggles soon! I’m just getting them back now at almost 13m and while some nights I’m tired I do love it.

Parker’s sleep has been a bit rocky since starting daycare last week. He hasn’t slept through the night since. But he’s also sleeping more during the day. I know it’s a phase because Ive really changed his day but I’d love to not have the wake up no matter how short lol. He’s going to bed fine at 7/8pm until around 12-1am. Wake ups are getting shorter but once he’s up he doesn’t want me to leave him - so to my bed to snuggle. Teeth also working their way down so...the wake up will resolve its self eventually.

I really hope it’s just a phase that passes and he becomes a great sleeper like Parker @JWatt5. @Hopeful_mom we still put him down in the bassinet every night but it’s the same. I don’t know if it’s because the halo is so hard and uncomfortable.
We don’t have many friends who will give us a swing. Maybe we can borrow one like from that friend who is pregnant since she is just 3 months along. If we can try one for a week and he actually likes it then I don’t mind going out and buying one.

@2MomsHoping we got the owlett also and I love it. It is great piece of mind. I just ordered a month supply of milkful lactation bars today. I figure even if they don't work they will be a yummy snack.  I'm having a hard time keeping up healthy calories and they will be quick to grab. They are $2.50 each with subscription, so I'll let you know how it goes. I probably should have ordered less but I wanted the $1 off each.  They are like double in price to the kind bars I eat now.

@safire3 I understand how you feel. I think anyone in your position would feel the same. My sister in law was pregnant with her third at same time and it was really annoying that she was going on vacation, watching her 2 kids and working while I was on home rest and riding in wheelchairs from week 20. I just stayed away- and her baby was born 4 days after ours! I'm still keeping my distance because I just don't want to focus on her kids, I want to focus on William. Counting my blessings and keeping the blinders on. Trying not to compare myself and journey to others. Because I am happy!

Since William came out and before I've been worried about having a second one.  It's weird because my husband and I actually just want and always wanted one and he is everything we wanted.  I think it is due to pressure or feeling like one isn't enough. My pregnancy was so hard that I don't know if I could do or want to do another. Then I had a cardiologist tell me I have to have a heart procedure if I ever want to get pregnant again. Well that put me over the edge.  It's like being told I can't makes me want one. I got some better news last week and now I'm feeling more content.

I was able to meet with a new cardiologist last week that has much more experience with pregnant ladies. She is optimistic about me having a second baby. That was all I needed I guess because now I am feeling so much more secure and content with just William.  She said the heart SVT/arythmia I had post partum was very common and never killed anyone. She also said I don't need am ablasion procedure as it only happened once and may not ever again in my life.  My blood pressure is back to normal and they think post partum excess fluid and IV fluid put strain on my heart and now my body is correcting.

I swear by our bouncer -- we never got a swing, but the bouncer is comfy for her and she can bounce herself silly when she's getting bored with something. My parents have a rock'n'play which she ADORES to sleep in....
Despite all that, we've struggled with naps since she started sleeping through the night! She got maybe 30 - 45 minutes this morning after waking at 8 am and she's been super cranky as the afternoon begins since she's getting overtired. I just put her down in her crib and am hoping she'll calm down after a bit and get some zzzz's.

I think I saw a tooth in her bottom gum today!! There was something that looked like the white part of a tooth poking up along the gumline. And she's been super drooly and teethy. So excited that she's getting her first tooth and unhappy that she's so uncomfortable. We've been trying some tylenol and teething rings. Can you just stick the teething rings into the freezer to get them cold? She has some "keys" on a ring that I think she'd like to chew on.

Update -- about 10 min or so later and she's calmed down. I haven't checked to see if she's asleep or just hanging out in the crib

@hottietoddy DW actually said to me yesterday how she misses talking to a baby in my belly and wants another one. I told her to go fly a kite and talk to me in a year  :p. I know your pregnancy was complicated but you were a real badass making it through. With the proper medical team and support hopefully you can have a sibling for little William one day!  Always rooting for you :)

    @sarzee2
Welcome to your new chapter! What a sweetie!

We do formula here so I can take my regular meds (only a tiny amount would go to baby through the milk, but the pediatrician felt it was better to just be safe and use formula). As long as baby is fed and happy, all is well in my book! Soon everything like bottles and diapers will become second nature

Self care is the hardest part to get right since we want to do everything for our little ones! Do you guys have a baby rotation so you can catch some zz's (esp. assuming you are pumping and DH can help with the feeds)? We rotated the night shift -- one of us was sleeping or off duty, one of us was up with baby. It really kept me sane to just have a period of a few hours where I could sleep or read a book or just play around on my phone. And remember to get out of the house for even a few minutes every day! Our pediatrician said she was OK to go out at 6 weeks -- before that, I would just go out for a half hour or so to run some errands or pick up needed baby stuff at the store. Once she could go out, we tried to get out a little bit every day.

It will go back faster than you realize. I can't believe my little girl's going to be 6 months in two weeks! (Although I wouldn't mind zipping through this first part of teething...)

  • Welcome @sarzee2! And congrats!
I had the same problem with Parker except he didn’t fight me/he just wouldn’t try at all lol. But still...latching despite everything just wasn’t happening cause he wouldn’t or wouldn’t stay awake. We topped up with formula from day two and I think by two weeks in my milk was in. I also forgot the odd pump (and honestly I didn’t MOTN/2am pump from 3wpp on) and still exclusively pumped. Do what makes you comfortable! I put DH in charge of making sure I was drinking water by reminding me or bringing water - make a pump station he could stock for you with easy snacks and bottles of water!

  • Welcome!! I exclusively pumped since Abigail was in the NICU and it took almost two weeks to be able to keep up with her demand the the nicu supplemented with formula. Once she got home, we attempted breastfeeding and it wasn’t until about a month ago (so roughly when she was three months) that things clicked and she decided she wanted to. Staying hydrated is definitely key for good pumping though but it can Be so hard! Try to drink a glass of water every time you pump.
  • @sarzee2 welcome to you and little carter the cutie!  I’m also pumping it has been such a struggle. I was trying to do the every 2-3 hours the lactation consultant said but that has become just so unrealistic to me. A few days ago I cut back to 4-5ish pumps with attemped nursing inbetween...it hasn’t been very successful. I hope you find your groove.  I Try and grab a bottle of water and a lactation cookie or granola bar to have each time I pump to try and get some hydration and calories I think it’s helped to build into the routine.

@mtbadger you are a rockstar for sticking with it for three months. My resolve is definitely starting to wear thin over here.

  • @sarzee2 congrats and welcome to the other side! Such a cutie! My pumpkin weighed almost the same but u best me by an oz ;) unfortunately she was a bit jaundice and we left the hospital at 7.4.  I totally get being nervous but sounds like things r going great! I'm still trying to bf and baby didn't gain enough this last month per the dr so I have to supplement formula.

Does drinking water right before u pump really help? I feel like I could float away at times.  My pumping is so off. Some sessions I get 2oz and other times I get a 1/4 oz it's really torture  :s

This babies gas is outta control.  Do u ladies think BM can give more gas then formula? I just can't take her being in pain and this is the second night in a row she's having gas more through the day...could be the bottles I'm using now that I think about it as she was more bf the weeks prior.

Its 5/30am and I'm still trying to get her to sleep.  She keeps napping like 15/20 min.  I feel like she's still a new born.  I feel like I'm trying to get her to sleep that I actually have to look at the time and see if her crankiness is just from being tired or that I have to feed her again.

Last question for tiday how often when feeding do u burp? She screams bloody murder after an oz and I can't even get a burp that I have to give her more.

  • @hopefulmom hang in there momma! Sorry you’re having such a tough time but you’re doing great! Abigail gets burped about halfway through a bottle - so after about 1.5-2 oz. Shell scream when we take the bottle away and doesn’t always burp either. We try for a few min and if she doesn’t burp we continue with the bottle and try again after. Sometimes she’ll also scream if she has a big burp coming.

@2momshoping i was totally hitting my limit and starting to crack. If Abigail hadn’t started to BF more,I was going to try and reduce my pumping sessions to 3-4 times a day to see what that did and had no issues if we needed to supplement. I still pump a few times a day since she does get two bottles of BM mixed with formula for additional calories and to freeze for daycare but it’s whenever I want to pump. I may be crazy but I am still getting up to do a middle of the night pump only bc I get almost enough for her two supplemented bottles then and anything else I pump through the day I can freeze. I also feel like BF has helped increase my supply.

For anyone on the east coast - stay safe this week/weekend with Florence coming! I’m in the DC area and we’ll likely get a ton of rain and flooding. Won’t impact me much (we are in a high rise condo) but I’m worried about losing power with all my frozen liquid gold!!
  • @sarzee2 Welcome! To echo everyone else, definitely stay on top of eating and drinking enough water. Self care is important for breastfeeding/pumping, but also your mental health. I didn't start pumping until closer to going back to work. Regardless, I made sure to drink a glass of water with every nursing or pumping session and eat a snack. It might sound like a crazy amount, but I'd go through my big hospital cup (32oz) at least 3 times a day at the beginning.

And no matter what, fed is best!
