Sick or Symptomatic?

Hi all,

I've had several BFP tests this week, after my husband and I started trying around August 22nd. It's really early, which is why I'm trying to figure out if I'm having pregnancy symptoms or if I'm actually sick. Because it's so early, I'd say it's unlikely I'm having symptoms, but then it's equally unlikely that I'd be able to have so many clear positive tests so early too, so I don't really know what to think. This is my first time being pregnant too.

I've had a runny nose the last few days, which I've read can be a symptom of pregnancy because of increased mucus production. Lucky me, this mucus has now gotten into my throat and ears, giving me full-blown sinusitis. I've also been positively exhausted, taking several hour naps this week which is highly unusual for me, even for being sick.

This isn't the normal sore breasts and fatigue that I've read about, but they still could be pregnancy symptoms ... has anyone else experienced these types of symptoms, particularly so early in pregnancy?

I appreciate all your knowledge and insight.

Re: Sick or Symptomatic?

  • Tiredness can definitely be an early symptom. Congrastion can be too, but usually not immediately. Basically your body starts producing extra blood, so it’s more that your nasal passages are swollen than increased mucus. This can also lead to nose bleeds.

  • Sounds like a cold to me but could certainly be pregnancy related given the hormones in your body. Rule is pregnant enough to turn a test, pregnant enough for symptoms.
    Best of luck!
  • Well, if you are sick it'll probably pass in a few days. Pregnancy symptoms will come and go. When I was in first tri I didn't really have symptoms aside from a bit of bloat, increased urination, and some spotting (from the Prometrium I had to take). In any case, I doubt you'll feel like you have a cold through your whole pregnancy! Be careful in 2nd/3rd tri though because your immune system tanks. I had a wicked upper respiratory infection and lost my voice for a week when I was 7 months along.
