I set up a weekend for us along the north shore of Lake Superior. First, I arranged a room at this fancy hotel I used to work at in Duluth, but slipped in other things to throw her off the scent. We did a 5k race in the morning and then headed up to Gooseberry Falls which is where we had our first date. I'm into geocaching especially when traveling, so made sure we were also doing those as well. We went all the way down to the lake where I had taken a picture of her a few years prior. I told her we should recreate the shot of her sitting on the rock, so go sit down. Then I pretended the camera was out of batteries and I needed to swap them out. I set the bag down and knelt down to get batteries, but pulled out a ring box instead.

So it is one of the only overly sweet things DH has done so I love talking about it.
It is Christmas time, and the only thing I've asked for as a present was an upgrade of my diamond earrings, which he agreed to. Christmas Eve we go to my cousin's house for her yearly party, and as we're leaving he tells me that he is doing a scavenger hunt for my present, which I LOVE. The clues were written on little pieces of paper inside clear glass ornaments, so very Christmas-esque. So the first clue is my mom, and I run back inside and get the second clue from her. It is his sister, so we drive to her house. On the drive there he's being secretive and I think maybe he's going to propose. So we continue on and get another clue and as we're driving he tells me "there are too many clues to do all in one night we'll just continue tomorrow. I'm like you are out of your mind, I don't care if we drive around until 5 am, we are finishing this thing! That is when he tells me that the earrings he bought me didn't come in yet, and that is why we can't continue. So the next clue anyways is our apartment, and we walk in there and I'm cautiously looking around like are you sure we're done?!? And he says yes. After maybe 10 minutes I start crying because it is blatantly obvious at this point that is NOT going to propose and I thought our relationship was somewhere and it wasn't blah blah blah. He comforts me, and we go to sleep. Well, the next day is Christmas and obviously the mail doesn't delivery on Christmas so I know I have to wait until the next day for them to come in. So I go to work like a regular day, and he calls me and tells me UPS LOST THE PACKAGE. I'm thinking what a mess, but so typical for our lives. I get home from work and he says the package was delivered and do I want to continue with the scavenger hunt, UM HECK YES I DO. So we go to his parents, and then the final clue is the gazebo in the middle of our small town. So we drive there, and there Christmas lights on the gazebo, and all the little trees around this pond, so it is super pretty. So at the Gazebo there is a glass ornament like the rest except that instead of being clear, it is white, so I have to break it to get the last clue. I smash it on the ground, read the paper that says "Will you marry me?" and turn around and he is on his knee (I totally just teared up writing that). I immediately start crying and after a little bit he joking goes, does that mean yes? lol So I call my mom sobbing, and tell her I'm engaged and she said "are you happy" hahaha. We go to his sister's house and have champagne and the rest is history.
Apparently, he had gone through a friend for the engagement ring in NYC, and instead of driving down to get it, he had it shipped overnight and obviously with the Christmas chaos it was delayed, which is why he didn't have it on Christmas eve. I never did get my earrings, and bought myself them with my tax return money the next year lol
He set up a weekend for us along the north shore of Lake Superior. We stayed in this posh hotel, corner room, overlooking the lake. On Saturday, we did a 5k along the lake, then went to Gooseberry Falls, which is where we had our first date. While he was taking photos and I was distracted, he popped out a ring. Then we hiked around for like an hour and a half without any cell phone reception and I couldn't call my parents or my sister and IT WAS TORTURE but okay fine, whatever, I said yes and I guess he's okay and I'll keep him around.
@Jens_Hoes I figured it out a couple weeks ago after the "how did you meet your SO" thread. He told his story and she said something like, "this sounds exactly like my story. weird. " You little sneaksters.
ETA: @Jens_Hoes That's a sweet story! But, that wait had to be killer, you poor thing! @coybig@runrinserepeat Love that proposal...and hearing it from both sides.
@jens_hoes Such a sweet engagement story! I can't believe you had to wait 2 extra days!
AFM, DH had the ring for a while without my knowledge and my best friend kept telling him that he needed to stop letting holidays pass without proposing. Sooooo, on Easter (LMAO, the most romantic holidar EVAR) he was acting really weird and I was like, what is wrong with you, and then he waited for the precise moment when I had a remote in each hand, to hug me OVER ME ARMS while still holding the remotes and tell me had an Easter present for me. I was all "OK weirdo", and then he brought out a ring box and I finally realized why he was having an aneurysm and of course I said yes. We're both goofy, so this really is the perfect story for us, lol.
Mine really is not that romantic haha. We had looked at and talked about rings for a few months, but we are both really young and could not afford anything too fancy, so he indicated that he was going to wait a while. I was fine with that, but I was a little concerned because my family was not at all OK with us living together (Even though I couldn’t afford to continue with school if I lived on my own). So, unbeknownst to me he bought a ring and called my dad and told him he was going to propose on Valentine’s Day. Well, I apparently made a smart a$$ comment about how Valentine’s Day is kind of a cheesy holiday and so he panicked and decided not to propose on that day. So, my dad was waiting for the call with bated breath for a week. Anyway, about a week later I was having a rough day and was upset about my parents’ (ugly) divorce while folding laundry. He snuck that ring into laundry basket and started talking about how regardless of what happened with my family of origin, I would always have him and we would have our own family. When I found the ring in the basket he got down on one knee and proposed. It is not the most romantic story, but it is very appropriate for our relationship.
I was studying abroad in Espana. He came to visit during his spring break and we took a four-day trip to France. We were back at the hotel, after the longest day of sightseeing and one of the best meals of my life (with lots of wine). I was nearly asleep when he came over and proposed - in Spanish, which was very sweet. He was so nervous, I remember his hands and voice being shakey (which also could've been because he was reciting in Spanish ). I think we ordered champagne, though at that point exhaustion had taken over and I don't really remember. I had an inkling that it'd be during that trip, though I did not expect it that night. We are not PDA people, at. all. So I definitely did not expect an Eiffel Tower, sparkling lights proposal.
We'd been talking about getting engaged for awhile and yet H managed to propose on the day I least expected it. My family's foundation/company puts on a charity golf tournament every year in honor of my grandfather and everyone in my family either golfs in it or volunteers for it. H has golfed with my dad, my brother, and his dad since we started dating. He managed to tell my dad, brother and my mom (who I was riding on a golf cart with all day passing out waters!) at the golf course that day without me realizing it. When we got home, he asked me to have one drink on our patio with the dogs before bed and then all of a sudden he was down on one knee. We were both sweaty and exhausted which is why I would've never expected it (H tends to "go big or go home" so I was expecting a huge fancy production with our families actually present. I liked how he did it WAY better though.) He had invited our parents/siblings over for champagne so they showed up about 20 minutes later and I texted all my aunts/cousins who I'm close with too so they showed up soon after and we had an impromptu late night celebration.
Whaaat?! I feel silly for not noticing more similarities sooner! You sly ones, you @coybig@runrinserepeat
DH and I had talked about rings I like & looked at loose stones a few weeks prior, so it was definitely on my mind. I wasn't in a hurry though as we had been together about a year. We went back home (2 hrs, both from the same town) & went out to my parents house on the farm. During that time, he had his parents put a card he wrote in my parents mailbox along with two roses which we had already agreed as wedding colors. He suggested we go on a walk & he wanted to bring snacks like a picnic. He was acting super funny, so I had an idea. My sister's, however, had no idea and invited themselves along so we all went walking down my parents long driveway when he strongly suggests him and I go check the mail for them. Dumbass sister INSISTS that mom already got it while other sister catches on and basically slaps sister 1. DH and I go to the mailbox and I knew something was up due to his oddness. I opened the box & read the card & wasn't totally sure if it was just for our one year together or what because it didn't say anything about a wedding or marriage. Turned around and he was on one knee He wanted to do it somewhere that we go all the time & home is very special to me. It was just us two & was the perfect time & moment.
So I probably don't really fit in here, but I'll play anyway. I am not in to proposals or engagement rings or really even the title of "engaged" (just for me and my life - everyone else can do whatever they want). I've just always figured that by the time you "get engaged" I would hope you've already been talking about how you want to marry each other, so aren't you already engaged at that point? Anyway, I'm not an expensive jewelry person and the thought of wearing such an expensive thing on my person all the time makes me uncomfortable, plus I have a lot of other ~opinons~ about engagement rings, so I always made it clear to H that I didn't want him to buy me one and would rather spend that money on something else. Maybe 3 years ago we started talking about him finally making the move from Lexington to Cincinnati because the timing with his PhD stuff would finally be right, and that we would definitely move in together and hopefully buy a house, and then mutually discussed that we would get married the year following buying the house. We ended up picking a house that needed a serious kitchen upgrade, and we decided that our "engagement" gift to ourselves would be a new kitchen. Coincidentally, the granite we chose for the countertops was called "Black Diamond" so I just tell everyone that he bought me a 500 lbs diamond ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Follow up, the original picture is still a background photo on my desktop. She didn't want the pic taken and was turned away, but it's still one of my favorites.
there are two motivations in sports, which is yours?
@hkom 29-year-old now me has so many opinions about engagement rings that I wish I could go back and tell 21-year-old me (who picked out and emailed the outrageous ring to future-fiance). So, I feel you on that completely.
@temmetime I LOLed at your sisters! Hahaha such a good story!
I love all of these stories! @Jens_Hoes - love the Christmas theme to your proposal - it sounds like something perfect for a Hallmark movie! @coybig and @runrinserepeat I had to read both of the stories twice and thought this is the exact same story - am I the only one who didn't know?! Then I read further down and realized I was not the only one. @texas_t My sister has a friend who also got engaged on Easter - he put her ring in an Easter egg, so you're not the first Easter engagement I've heard of. @temmetime your sisters coming along - that is funny!
Mine was not some great story or big surprise. We had been talking about it and even went and looked at loose stones where I basically picked out exactly what I wanted. I just didn't know he had already gone back for the completed ring. We got home one night after shopping and my dog came running down the hall. He (still) eats everything in sight, so I thought he had something he wasn't supposed to have. However, when he got to me I realized the engagement ring was tied to his neck and MH was standing there and asked me to marry him.
We went on a weekend getaway in the mountains for the Labour Day long weekend (6 years ago!). I happened to be getting back from a work trip, so he had to pick me up from the airport and we headed straight out to the mountains. Little did I know that he actually arrived early to talk to my parents and let them know that he was going to propose that weekend. Anyway, on one of the nights we had a nice dinner, went back to the hotel room and he offered to sit on the balcony and watch the stars. Usually, it's me who would suggest that, so I knew something was up. So we grab some blankets and go sit on the balcony. Meanwhile, he is wearing sweats and I can clearly see there is a box of some type in his pocket. And then he starts talking about some of our favourite times we've gone out to the mountains but I've kind of figured out what's happening so I wasn't very talkative (In my head I was thinking "do i tell him I figured it out? No, I am sure he has a plan - I don't want to ruin it"). So it turned into a really awkward moment because we were both nervous until he finally pulled out the ring! I am still not sure if I actually answered or not, but we've been married for 5 years
@texas_t and @hkom oh my goodness - I wouldn’t put it past the dog to eat my ring! The things this dog has eaten - I’m honestly surprised he’s avoided exploratory surgery in his 13+ years. Fortunately, the ring was secured tightly to his neck and not in his mouth.
