High Risk Check-in w/o 8/29

Hey, y'all! This is a check-in for those of us that are high risk. Whether you've known from the beginning or were just told, this a place to get some extra support. High Risk pregnancies bring an added level of stress and fear to an already stressful time, so use this as your safe space. It should go without saying, but I will, a lot of this thread thread will be TW, so there is no need to use them. We've either all been through this or are navigating together. So let's support each other as we navigate the craziness of a high risk pregnancy.

1. How far along are you? EDD?

2. Why are you high risk? How many weeks were you when you found out?

3. What is your protocol? I.E. extra monitoring, early delivery, etc.

4. How are you? Use this as your rant/rave/screw this whole situation post.

GTKY: What do you have left to do to prepare for baby?

Re: High Risk Check-in w/o 8/29

  • 1. How far along are you? EDD?
    27w6d, edd 11/22
    2. Why are you high risk? How many weeks were you when you found out?
twins sharing placenta. baby b has one damaged kidney (20w) and now is a couple percentile points off from siugr threshold (27w). previous history of iugr and low amniotic fluid (last pregnancy).
    3. What is your protocol? I.E. extra monitoring, early delivery, etc.
delivery no later than 37w. lots of ultrasound monitoring. nst starting oct.
    4. How are you? Use this as your rant/rave/screw this whole situation post.
definitely the latter sentiments today. if baby b drops anymore, then we may be looking at another emergency delivery to safeguard both babies. the statistics for siugr are pretty bleak. had the convo yesterday with dh that we need to be prepared to be suddenly sent to the hospital after either of the next two mfm appointments in september.
GTKY: What do you have left to do to prepare for baby?
i still need to figure out where to get a breastpump. tried the hospital baby shop today, but they only sell the ameda brand (wtf?). will drive around tomorrow to a couple dmes nearby and try them. or maybe look online to see if i can find a website that will work with my small insurance company. i still need to organize dresser drawers in the baby room and buy a few small necessities for post partum and the newborn days. i’m sure there’s lots of other stuff to do too that i’m not thinking of.

  • @highsteaks At the risk of sounding super creepy, I wish I could give you a hug IRL. I'm sorry You are going through this, it sucks a lot. Hoping baby B catches up.
  • 1. How far along are you? EDD?
    29+3

    2. Why are you high risk? How many weeks were you when you found out?
ICP, previous preterm labor and delivery

    3. What is your protocol? I.E. extra monitoring, early delivery, etc.
Right now once weekly u/s, labs every two weeks. Once I hit 32 weeks, I will start NSTs on top of everything else.

    4. How are you? Use this as your rant/rave/screw this whole situation post.
I'm over it. I'm tired and just worn out. Contractions are a pain in the butt. It's not helping that his movements have changed, which I think is because he is literally in my pelvis.

GTKY: What do you have left to do to prepare for baby? I need to through all of our NB and 0-3 months clothes to see what we can use and wash. I need to wash the carseat and the RNP. That should be all I need since we pretty much have Everything else. FIL is buying the crib for Babe, so we will need to set it up when it comes in. If it doesn't come in on time, we have a co-sleeper he can sleep in, or the RNP.
  • @wildrainbow ditto, hun. and i feel like an a** for even complaining when you’re in your situation and so uncomfortable.
  • @highsteaks I do not have the monopoly on pity parties and complaining. We are all dealing with crap. Besides, I couldn't imagine dealing with what you are going through. All the ((Hugs)) and know your girls are strong because you are their mom. You got this, love.
  • @highsteaks ugh, that’s stressful. Sorry that you’re going through all this. I wish there was something comforting to say but I know from experience that all the bright sides to the situation don’t really take away the fear and worry. Sending positive thoughts to you and your girls.

@wildrainbow I was so glad to see things were ok with you at the start of the week. Sounds like you’re having a tough time too - I find baby getting low in my pelvis really uncomfortable and I’m not even having contractions so can’t imagine what you’re dealing with. Sending good thoughts to you and babe too.
  • 1. How far along are you? EDD?  28+1, EDD 21 November, although I was always expecting to deliver at 38w.

    2. Why are you high risk? How many weeks were you when you found out?  I have a mechanical mitral valve and have known from the start that I would be high risk. At 18w I found that I have a large subchorionic hematoma sitting over my cervix and at 20w that the amnion and chorion (the two membranes that make up the amniotic sac) have separated. I also have a single umbilical artery and marginal cord insertion. The mechanical heart valve means that I always need to be taking blood thinners.

    3. What is your protocol? I.E. extra monitoring, early delivery, etc.  I have been on extra monitoring from the start, with regular visits with my OB and cardiologist. Currently seeing my OB weekly and having ultrasounds every 2 weeks to monitor baby’s growth.

    4. How are you? Use this as your rant/rave/screw this whole situation post.  Still feeling pretty good and enjoying being at home rather than in hospital. My last ultrasound showed baby is continuing to grow really well. My OB is ok with me continuing the pregnancy for now, but has said that if baby shows any signs of struggling, she’s coming straight out (which at this point is ok with me, given that he also said we’ve gotten way further than anyone would have expected). I’m feeling quite optimistic about making it to 38w, but also ok with accepting an earlier delivery if necessary.

GTKY: What do you have left to do to prepare for baby?  Not too much. We’re going to paint the wardrobe doors in baby’s room this weekend, and once that’s done we’ll be able to set up the furniture. Still need to buy her buggy, but I’ve made the decision on that so it’s just a matter of ordering it. I need to get MH to instal the car seat bases in our cars. Otherwise it’s more tidying up and organising baby clothes etc. Oh, and figuring out how the heck to look after a newborn (we’re both first time parents).
  • @stitchnz Im so happy to hear you are doing so well! This makes my heart super happy. Baby girl is a warrior for sure! As far as caring for a newborn, you will figure it out. I promise, once she get here you will suddenly know what she needs when needs it. You will rock it, I'm sure of it. You've nailed down all the trials of your pregnancy.

    1. How far along are you? EDD?
    - 30+5 and 11/3

    2. Why are you high risk? How many weeks were you when you found out?
    - straight away because of two pre term labors

    3. What is your protocol? I.E. extra monitoring, early delivery, etc.
     - already doing weekly appointments and this week we will start checking for dilation and quite possibly be put on bed rest.

    4. How are you? Use this as your rant/rave/screw this whole situation post.
     - I am ok although I do not want to be on bed rest so soon. I am not feeling very confident though as I’ve been having crazy, consistent and painful contractions.

GTKY: What do you have left to do to prepare for baby?
-literally everything. I’ve been so short at work I haven’t had time to do anything at home and we decided to do something with the kids before new baby and went camping on our last vacation when we probably should have gotten the house ready. Oh well! Lol

It sucks that we are all here but I like that we have a small group of us that semi understand what we are all going through. Even though we are all here for different reasons! I’m happy to ready the good news, sorry to read the not so good news and hoping the best for all of us <3

  • @stitchnz i’m also glad to hear that you’re feeling better and still at home! that’s great that baby is growing so so well in spite of the umbilical complications. and no worries about having yet to learn to care for a newborn; you’ll have the help of nurses at the hospital, then everything comes naturally. also, nothing wrong with figuring stuff out as you go along.

@ashkee05 fingers crossed for no need for bed rest. don’t blame you one bit for deciding to vacay with the family—that’s important time. how do your kids like camping?

now that fall is getting here, i’m really bummed that we’ll definitely not get a chance to go camping this year. we took dd last year and it was so much fun! but even if i had zero complications, the thought of rolling out of an air mattress a zillion times a night to hike to the restrooms is a hard pass!
  • @highsteaks so I may or may not have been a spoiled pregnant brat and rented a cabin this time because I didn’t want to do that! Lol we had so much fun other than the dang mosquitos! This was the toddlers first time and he was a little iffy at night but loved it otherwise. They had an amazing aqua park on the lake that my 11 yo LOVED and a water slide the little dude wouldn’t get off of. Luckly we went late and school had started in their area already so we pretty much had the place to ourselves and they weren’t bugging anyone going nuts on all the stuff

I just wish I could give you all hugs right now. I'm sorry I missed so much this week and it seems like it's generally been a tough one for my fellow high risk ladies - I even feel guilty calling myself that seeing what you all are going through. Hoping for growth, energy, fun family times camping... whatever it is that makes you happy <3

As for me, I had an uneventful OBGYN appt and am being moved to appts every 2 weeks which is pretty standard around 28 weeks as I understand. I did a retest for GD (1 hour, thankfully although I had the fruit punch this time which was not exactly delicious), so here's hoping I passed.

Forgot to talk about what's left to do for baby. The room is pretty much all set, we are having the overhead light installed this weekend and I just need to figure out where to put all the things :)
  • Well yay! First off last night I was having very consistent and painful contractions. Like a minute long and two minutes apart for over an hour. I knew I had my appointment today though so I just pushed through and was able to sleep. Still had some this morning but not as consistent. Any way I get to my appointment, do my urine test and went to the room. My bp was 130 today and I am usually 110 ish. She doesn’t say anything but she is going to write that down. Cool. I love how they try to not alarm you but really it’s all they do! Then the dr comes in and tells me I had protein in my urine. I have no history of this in either of my two pregnancies so he says he’s not too worried and finds it weird. Usually it happens in your first, and can be common in your second if you have a different partner (which I do) and he thinks it’s super weird that it would come on in my second pregnancy with the same partner. He’s really hoping it’s a fluke week and again to not worry... yeah easier said than done! I go back Tuesday and am really hoping he is right about the fluke week. Dudes heart rate was 140. He said he’s measuring perfect but he could definitely feel a lot of activity while feeling me and I need to keep an eye on it and If I wasn’t already weekly he would make me weekly... here’s to hoping this guy plays nice, I need him to stay put for at least another 3 weeks if not more!!!

  • @ginny_203 why did you have to retake the 1-hr? sorry if you already explained elsewhere; my brain is so foggy lately. i hope you passed as well! were you able to find a dresser and rug that you liked?

@ashkee05 what did your doc make of all the contractions you had last night?
  • @highsteaks he told me to just keep an eye and call them if I feel like they are doing anything. I always feel like the guys don’t sorry as much. We were supposed to start checking for dilation yesterday but he said he didn’t want to. Tuesday when I go I see the girl and she is the one who wanted to start checking so I know Tuesday I’ll find out a lot more. It was 32 weeks with my second when he started coming but they stopped him, had my first at 34 so it won’t surprise me if anything is brewing.

  • @ashkee05 Hopefully the contractions aren't causing cervical change, but I know that is wishful thinking. I hope baby gets to hang out for a while longer. My Dr doesn't like doing manual checks on me because it causes contractions, so we check my cervix via u/s. Way less cramping/contractions than a manual check.
  • 1. How far along are you? EDD?
    28w EDD is 11/23/18

    2. Why are you high risk? How many weeks were you when you found out?
Mo/Di twins and lefty (I've taken to calling them lefty and righty) has a Pulmonary Stenosis in his/her heart.

    3. What is your protocol? I.E. extra monitoring, early delivery, etc.
EOW appointments/scans with MFM and regular Fetal Echos with Peds Cardiology. Lefty will have to go straight to the NICU for observation as soon as he/she is born.

    4. How are you? Use this as your rant/rave/screw this whole situation post.
I'm good. Sorry that I've been completely absent this week. I was at a work conference in Wisconsin which kept me busy and running all over the place. I walked 5 miles each day, minimum, going from session to session. So, needless to say, by the end of the day I was wiped out! That being said, I was able to walk that much at 27+ weeks pregnant with twins, so I'd say I'm doing well (which I feel a little guilty saying after reading some of your updates...I'm definitely praying for all of us!).

GTKY: What do you have left to do to prepare for baby?
Lots! We have the nursery mostly together. My baby shower is next weekend along with the Mothers of Twins consignment sale. I should be able to wrap up most of it next week. I still have to pack my hospital bag and figure out the breast pump situation.

  • @highsteaks my obgyn wanted me to retake the GCT because I was borderline before and I'm anxiously awaiting the results. I fortunately did find the dresser but haven't found a rug yet! I've got a temporary one in there but it's too small for the space. Unfortunately our electrician cancelled on us yesterday so TBD on when the lighting will be installed... ugh!

I will have to ask about that. Mine always do manual. I guess I didn’t even know they could do it via us because I’m so used to them doing this it that way.

  • I hope everyone's LO is still cooking! I just wanted to say how glad I am that we haven't had any birth announcements yet!

My OB moved me to weekly cervical measurements, but told me this past week that those will stop at 34 weeks because there "isn't much point" after that. I think I'd feel better if they went to 36 weeks, but hey, I only made it to 29 with DS so 34 would be really good for me!

  • @middleschoolmommy I agree with the zero birth announcements! I'm glad your little girl is still cooking! I know this week has been hard on you, hope you are getting some good rest this weekend!
  • @middleschoolmommy I'm just so glad to hear your little girl's still cooking :) here's hoping you hit 36+!
