Next Steps After Recurring Miscarriage

After two miscarriages what kind of doctor do you meet with? My doctor recommended a doctor certified in maternal fetal medicine. My MIL said I should go to a reproductive endocrinologist. I don't understand the differences fully. Does it matter? What do you think?

After 2 MC my ob-gyn sent me to a MFM specialist. It was nice to chat with her and get ideas of what my next steps should be. My ob-gyn refused to send me to an RE until after 3 MC. Some insurances will not pay for an RE until after 3 MC, which is why I think a lot of them send you to a MFM specialist first. You should probably call your insurance and ask what they will/will not pay for, and if they consider RPL to be 2 or more MC in a row with no living children (the new standard for RPL) or if they are going with the old 3 MC for RPL standards. It all depends on how it gets billed.

Also, not to dishearten you as there are a LOT of things that can be tested for an determined and 'fixed' or worked with for RPL sufferers, but unfortunately the statistics are not in our favor. 50-75% of us get an unexplained diagnosis (my boat). However, of those, approximately 60% go on to have a child without any intervention. So, there is hope. And I still would recommend the tests (either now, or after a 3rd MC, as you/your insurance decides) as I feel better knowing that I have ruled out all of the 'easy fixes' as it were.

    MC #1: D&C Oct 23, 2015 (7.5 weeks)
    MC #2: July 1, 2016 (5.5 weeks)
    MC #3: October 17, 2016 (CP)
    RE #1: RPL testing November 2016-January 2017
    MC #4: Feb. 28, 2017 (CP)
    RE #2: Additional RPL testing March-November 2017
    MC #5: January 2019 (6.5 weeks)

    RE #3: More testing 2023.
Egg Retrieval Sept/Oct 2023, 2 good embryos after PGT-A testing.
    Surgery for endometriosis January 2024
Lupron Depo March 2024.  Benched 3 months.  Hopefully FET after that.

My OB sent me to an RE for the hormone type tests after 3 losses, a hematologist after 3 more, an OB-GYN specializing in surgery on tubes to look at the function after 7 more losses. He did some work, lost two more after that for a total of 15 losses.

I wasn't sent to MFM until the 16th pregnancy because it got far enough along to look more closely at causes. They still aren't sure what happened, but MFM found a clotting order that is fairly rare so was never tested for.

    Sorry you're going through this.

My ob did a recurrent miscarriage blood panel after two losses.  Sent me to maternal fetal for chromosomal tests on hubby and I after the 3rd loss.  And when that came back fine I went to a fertility specialist (a month of hormone testing..still no diagnosis). I had my daughter with my 4th pregnancy and miscarried the 5th.

Hang in there and try to keep hope.
