Weight gain

Lately I’ve been focusing on what is or is not acceptable for weight gain. This is my third and with my 1st and 2nd I gained 50-65 pounds. Lost all the weight after my first but stayed 40 pounds over after my second. I have asked my doctor if I have a number to stick to or if I should be concerned and they just tell me no. I am trying to be super conscious to avoid gaining too much this time and try to avoid any issues since I’m high risk. How is everyone doing with the weight gain? I’m also feeling super self conscious this time around. I want to enjoy this since this is my last. Maybe I’m just having a week so I’ll leave my vent here.

I gained more than that with my first so I've been crazy paranoid this time around. I asked my OB at my first appointment to refer me to a nutritionist, but they felt like that was jumping the gun. They said just calm down and as of yet, not one OB in the practice has mentioned my weight or weight gain. This time around, I've gained 13 pounds and with the last pregnancy at this point I had gained 23 pounds. So, no one seems worried and I seem to be doing better, so I'm going to keep doing what I'm doing. I feel ya, though!

Blah I’m only up 8 pounds which my husband said is much less than with my boys at this point but I’m so focused on its making me upset. Which makes no sense. I think knowing I hit the weight I gave birth at at my 21 week appointment Friday is making me feel a little anxious. What will I look like or be health wise If i gain much more? Also all those stupid sites says if your BMI is such and such not to gain more then 15-20 ish. And of course mine in over weight for my height and weight and all my friends have said with number three no matter what you do you will gain just as much.

  • I gained ~50-60 lbs with my first, then again with the twins and I’m on track to gain the same this time around. I’m currently up 30lbs at 23 weeks. I started this pregnancy 15-20 lbs heavier than the other two, so I’m definitely super uncomfortable where I’m at and am looking forward to working this weight off. I saw my doctor last week and she wasn’t concerned at all with my weight gain and said it’s just what your body seems to do. I don’t have any advice, just know I’m with you. This is definitely my last pregnancy too and it’s probably been my most miserable between morning sickness, an SCH complicating things and the weight gain. I’ve never loved being pregnant, but this time I actually really dislike it. Good thing I know he’s worth it! Come on December!
  • Yes @sungglyduckling25! I’ve been in my room since 7 feeling sick as a dog. Worst pregnancy I have had. My boys were easy with no sickness. This shit won’t end and carbs are the only thing that sits well. I feel you I worked hard to get this one so I need to just enjoy.. between the sickness of course. Are you still having sch issues?

I gained 38 lbs with DS, but I was also at my heaviest when I got pregnant. I worked really hard and over the course of 2 years. I lost the baby weight and an additional 25 lbs. So far, I have gained 20 lbs already, which I am really upset about.  prior to getting pregnant, I was working out 3 to 4 days per week. I was restricted from working out during my first trimester because of some spotting I had and I just can’t seem to find the energy to get back into it.  I really do not want to gain as much as I did with DS, so I need to figure something out!
  • @mcgeeva I’m sorry you are still sick! Mine has pretty much gone away, but it was most definitely the worst of all 3 pregnancies. Or maybe it was trying to keep up with three school age kids while having morning sickness...I’ll never know. Either way it was not fun. The SCH is still hanging out, it’s stable and besides the few weeks after first finding it, has been very uneventful. My doctor is not concerned about it anymore, which is great, but I’m still sticking with all of the original restrictions.
  • That’s great it’s calmed down @snugglyduckling25 because I know how scary bleeding is when pregnant. I had a partial placenta aburption with my first which I’ll never forget so def get taking it easy. Keeping up with kids defintely makes this tough. I have two boys that start school this week and baseball twice a week each with my husband traveling the next month and a half. Going to be a rough two months.

@katy0990 that’s awesome how hard you worked. So I’m sure I can imagine your nerves wth putting it back on. We all want healthy babies number one but it’s still hard to handle and I am by no means eating carb free extra healthy meals or working out like I should. And now with my husband being gone that time is gone.

  • I’m a FTM so I don’t have much experience here, but I’m going to share since you’re asking!

I started out at a healthy BMI (but a little too squishy according to my pants & a BodPod Composition), about 15lbs heavier than I liked.
    So far I have gained 6lbs, I am currently 24 weeks and I don’t own a scale.

I might get weighed next week, curious to see what the scale says. It probably won’t show any large gains because I know I’m losing muscle mass :grimace:

  • @snugglyduckling25 I’m glad that they are not concerned about your SCH at this time, but I hope it resolves soon.
  • @Jens_Hoes I gained 9 lbs between my 16 and 20 week appointments. I am pretty upset about it. Although, I had dinner at my dad’s house the night before and really pigged our on homemade bacon Mac & cheese, peach pie, and zucchini cake, so I’m blaming that for some of it.

  • @runrinserepeat That makes a lot of sense. My LO was measuring a couple weeks ahead at my a/s, so maybe that’s why I’m gaining so much.

I'm also FTM. Had sort of constant low grade nausea for the first trimester + few weeks so the weight gain has been slow, but now that I'm in the second trimester, it seems to be more steady 0.5 to 1 lb per week gain. I'm trying not to focus on the numbers (scary when thinking about the non-pregnant times!).
Out of curiosity, weight gain seems to have some genetic/individual component to it. Does anyone know if their mom was a gainer/loser during pregnancy? My mom likes talking about how she was back at her pre pregnancy weight within a few weeks and I'm hoping it's the case for me too

@kadeephd Yes, good point! everyone sheds the weight from bfing. I lost a lot while bfing, but some of it still hung around until I got into a workout routine because while it burns calories, bfing also requires you to be sedentary for 30-50 minutes out of every 3 hours or so.
  • Weight stuff is so complicated. Last time I started in the healthy weight range but higher than I’d like. I lost about 10 lbs the first trimester, then gained it back plus 20 more (30 lb weight gain total). I lost about 15-20 lbs easily postpartum.

This time, I started off heavier, close to my delivery weight with my first. I lost 30 lbs in the first trimester due to MS plus some medical issues. I stopped losing weight at about week 14 weeks, and as of last Thursday (22 weeks) had gained 7 lbs from my lowest weight this pregnancy. My OB is pleased that I’ve started gaining, but now I feel a little overwhelmed with how quickly the gain is happening — partly because I am more sedentary the past week or two because of RLP with any walking. I would like to keep to a pound a week for the remainder, but I think my body is going to do whatever it wants and I’ll just have to roll with it.
  • @mcgeeva we are all doing the best we can to care for our LOs! You absolutely are entitled to some ice cream!
  • @kadeephd I have some glimmers of disordered eating as well and have been up and down with my weight a ton over the years.
I was able to lose pretty much all the weight I gained over 9 months postpartum. But my shape was definitely not the same. Loose and different lol
  • I've definitely almost hit my "desired" weight gain for this pregnancy. And the other day The Bump app decided to make me feel better by saying "you're likely to gain another 11lbs from this point until the end of pregnancy"  :# But I don't *feel* like I've gained that much fat, you know? My face looks the same, I think..

  • I gained 39 lbs with my last and I feel like I gained a majority of it in the last month or 2.  I had insane swelling the last month, so I think I was retaining a lot of water.  From weeks 6-20 this time around, I had some pretty bad nausea and food aversions, so I think I've only gained 5-10.  I'm sure, now that I've got my appetite back, I'll start gaining more regularly.  After I had my first, I lost the weight (not ALL of it, but I was down to 5 over pre-pregnancy) pretty quickly.  It may have been a combo of breastfeeding and light exercise.  But, I started on PPD/PPA meds at 7 months PP and I gained 10-15 lbs from that...and kept it on until I got pregnant again.  I'm not going to put too much pressure on myself, but I'd like to get back down to that 5 lbs over pre-pregnancy weight again.

  • I think what others said about not worrying too much about the numbers as long as it's an otherwise healthy pregnancy is important to think about. I was asking my nutritionist these questions and she gained over the recommended amount too when she was pregnant! She basically described it as, if you're putting good food into your body (aka nutritious things - enough protein, healthy fats, good carbs) and you are getting exercise and/or walking daily, then your baby likely won't have the issues they worry about when the mom gains too much. Typically that will come from overindulging the sweets and bad carbs (the things that don't provide as much nutrition). (Of course, we can't always be 100% perfect, but having a pretty decent track record realllly helps.)

I've gained about 17 pounds as of this morning... but I was with my college roomie this weekend and we definitely had a splurge weekend, so I think 2-3 pounds is water weight from overdoing the carbs from what I normally do. By the end of the week, I'm guessing that  it'll go down a little. I know my body goes up a few pounds when I overeat chips and things, but usually recovers fairly quickly. :)
