MY UO is I extecpt small exceptions during pregnancy. For example I had jury duty today and I had to pee. They wouldn’t let me out of the room. 15 minutes later I was dismissed and I luckily didn’t pee my pants but I expect to be able to use the restroom even if they were told to keep everyone in the room. (It wasn’t safety related). I kinda lost it on the coordinator and walked out. Luckily I wasn’t in contempt but I work with mostly lawyers and was texting with one who wanted me to demand to be released on terms of discrimination.

My UO this week is that I super hate kids stuff, like ridiculous kid furniture, unhealthy things marketed to kids, but I especially hate kids menus. I think it’s sad to assume that children only eat/like bland fast food. I’ll be damned if I ever buy LO chicken nuggets - worthless calories and bad oils.

See... Kids menus are nice, because they're cheaper usually. And honestly, the sides that come with kids menus are mostly healthy (my kids choose steamed broccoli or fresh fruit most of the time). I'll be damned if I'm ordering a full adult meal for kids who might only take two bites, but my opinion is completely based on my cheap-ass attitude, and not exactly what's healthy. We don't eat out often enough for it to be a health concern for them anyway (because again, I'm cheap and would rather cook food at home).

@runrinserepeat Ah! I’ll admit, kids menus do have better portions. I can clarify that my issue is that the foods are often bland; cheese pizza, macaroni, chicken nuggets. No flavorful things like Parmesan risotto, or sweet potato gnocchi.

(We also prefer to eat at home too! Gourmet meals for a fraction of restaurant price)

@echo-charlietango Agreed on the kids food. I'm certainly not a food snob, sometimes H and I will eat hotdogs for dinner because, hey, hotdogs are good. But the idea that kids need to eat separate food than adults drives me nuts. We usually eat at home as well. But in the event we do go out, we never finish our restaurant meals anyway, so we can just order two and split between the three of us.

Definitely a FFC but everytime my kid drives past McDonalds he says "oohhh fries"
We eat well most of the time but we indulge for treats and let DS do so as well.
His fav thing is when H walks in with a happy meal. woops.

I’m with @runrinserepeat on liking the cheaper kids options, especially places where kids eat free! It’s also nice because you can pick a side and get free refills on milk usually. DS eats great at home, but tends to get distracted at restaurants and doesn’t eat much, so I’d rather not spend a ton on his meal. Plus, the less mess the better.

Mom of the year - my kids wouldn't know the difference between Parmesan risotto and macaroni, so I wouldn't waste the good food on them

FWIW, my kids eat a lot of what you classify as bland. They're also usually down with the spicy chana masala I make, and are always trying to steal my sushi when we order takeout. A few chicken nuggets once in a while haven't managed to tank their taste buds or eliminate their ability to eat real food and try new things.

Also, I feel like people forget that kids have different taste buds than adults. We're a lot less sensitive than they are, so sometimes it takes a while for them to really appreciate "adult" flavors.

@kristah2 I had some strong cravings for Burger King Mayo a few weeks ago, so we went a couple times for lunch. Now anytime we pass one, DS says, “Look Mommy! It’s the French fry shop!”

@echo-charlietango I've had an aversion to feeding my son "kid" things, so my husband or I typically order a meal that we can share with him! Restaurant portions are huge so we always have plenty to eat, plus, I'll be damned if my kid eats a burger at a mexican food joint. Consequently, because we love Japanese food, he's a giant fan of tofu, edamame, and miso soup! That being said, he'll eat an occasional chicken nugget, but he's really not a fan!

@texas_t I don’t think DS has ever had anything at a Mexican restaurant. He always fills up on the chips and salsa and then DH and I pig out on his doggy bag later. I guess this is more of a FFFC haha

My kids are sad if they don’t have a kids menu they can color. I’m all for the kids meal prices! However I know that they like and will help them to chose that. Sometimes it’s a cheese burger, my big likes sushi, little likes miso (they don’t like the opposite lol), and usually fruit is always a winner.

I'm team kids meals. The prices are good, and I'm not sure if I know any children who eat any adult meals while out eating. Although most of the children I know are 5 and under. Plus, my daughter loves grilled cheese, mac and cheese and pizza. If I want to try something new then I don't want to worry about her not eating and then having to figure out another thing for her to actually eat.

Also, I agree about the burgers at a Mexican restaurant. Although, we have ordered him pizza at an Italian place before because pasta is a PITA to clean and I’m lazy, plus I wouldn’t expect a server to deal with that either.

Thought of one. I'm all for letting my kids choose their own interests and be their own person and whatnot. But my children won't play football while they live in my house. I'd really prefer they didn't play soccer, because concussions there are way too frequent, too, but DH is so involved in soccer I might have less influence there.

Re Kids Meals: no offense, no flames but @echo-charlietango, I feel like that is something I would have said prior to having a baby!!

Do we love that our kid asks for Mac n Chesse every time we go out not matter what and then pouts if she doesn’t get it or better yet we get it for her and she still only eats my meal, No. I told the hubs I would never buy another kids meal again but the other night in a high end chophouse I couldn’t take the risk of bad behavior and the mac was order and not eaten.....again. DD is a great eater and tries most food, loves her veggies and we let a happy meal slip in there once in awhile too!!

I have to agree that children pallets take awhile to develope but we believe in offering everything and taking DD to nicer places since she was a wee Bebe so she knows what behavior we expect!! (Doesn’t mean she is alway great, eating earlier is better for her)

We are praying this baby will do just as well!!

Re: kids' meals, I'm with @LLynde5. It's something I definitely didn't want to get into before I had my son, but then they don't always have the fancy adult tastes you do (gosh darn it!) and you're so desperate to get them to eat something or they might just up and die on you before bedtime that you cave for the bland kids' meal.

I don't know how I'm going to avoid this next child being picky, but I have a feeling it will involve a lot more attempts at green veggies in the puree stage. Random note for anyone interested, someone got me the book Baby Foodie as a shower gift and just about every recipe in there was a hit with my son when he was younger. Now he lives off of breakfast, carbs, cheese, and fruit.

I was reminded of my UO while reading the baby budget page, and it's this: I don't think kids really need containers. We survived without a bouncer, swing, sit-me-up, and every other fancy contraption. That said, my son was super easygoing and content to chill while I showered. *runs away before the fire can catch up to me*

@PensiveCrayon I am jealous of your lack of need for containment! My DS was trying to escape furniture by 5 mos and climbing the stairs by 9 months He even figured out how to Houdini one of the baby gates within a few weeks of turning 1. I STILL have to shower at night while he is asleep and he is 2.5. Hopefully, this LO will be more chill.

@runrinserepeat I agree on the football thing. It’s a no from me on hockey too. Just not worth it to me. I think I’d be ok with soccer especially with having girls, I’m guessing it will be a little less rough. But my girls could of course end up be ridiculously unathletic like their mother and I won’t have to worry about it.
