Healthy Habits wo 8/13

This is our weekly thread to support each other in healthy eating and excercise!

I'm going to try to run 3 days this week and go to yoga twice. I also need to rein the eating back in... so I plan on doing a lot of cooking this week!

What are your goals for the week?

Re: Healthy Habits wo 8/13

  • My goal this week isito eat more fruits and veggies. Last week was rough for eating healthy because we were essentially homeless thanks to the fire

Anyone scared of exercising? I think it's my Pgal brain but I'm worried about doing anything too intense. I should just go for some walks for now
  • Loading the player...
  • @booksandlace oh my! I'm so sorry you're going through that!! I hope everyone is safe and healthy!
In terms of exercising you should only continue what your body is used to... and if it feels bad dont do it... walking is great!!
  • I went to the gym this morning before work. I was on the elliptical trying to take it easy and I started getting this twinges and pains that made me uncomfortable so I backed off and spent the rest of the time just walking on the treadmill. I was completely sedentary during my first pregnancy and trying to be active this time around but I have no idea how to be pregnant and exercise. I have no idea of the twinges were normal and nothing to worry about ... I feel frustrated that I ended up "wasting" time at the gym walking when that's something I could do on my own outside of the gym but hey... At least I loved my body a bit even if it wasn't a real cardio exercise
  • My goals this week are to eat healthier (fewer carbs and sweets!), and workout at least four days.  I only went three days last week due to a local carnival, so I'm trying to get back on track.

Anyone else already suffering from shortness of breath/racing heart rate when doing simple things like walking up the stairs?
    Pregnancy Ticker
  • Fortunately no shortness of breath yet here.

    goals for this week:
    1) less carbs (difficult because the house is currently over-stocked with perishable carbs AND WHO TURNS DOWN A BAGEL). I need to save the carbs for nausea days, and that is not today.

    2) hit up a farmstand and up the veggie/carb ratio in the fridge. there’s a hand-painted sign for fresh corn that popped up two days ago, so I know one thing is in season!

    3) go for two long walks with the stroller. Stop caring about the rain, and go explore.

@berky84 listening to your body is really important. During my last pregnancy I didvthe elliptical on and off. Usually only 15-20 min stretches and early in my pregnancy. By the 3rd trimester I stuck to walks.
This pregnancy I’m running, but really letting my body guide it. Yesterday on my 2.5 mile run I stopped to walk twice, and I cut it short (I wanted to do 3 Miles). Today I had blood drawn so no exercise for me.
ETA: the point of that was - listen to your body. If it doesn’t feel right or good, then you’re better off walking or cutting things short. Exercise is great for you, no matter whether it’s the elliptical or a walk.
  • I hope to get a run in three days this week. I've already had to dramatically back off on speed, but I'm ok with that for now as long as I'm staying active.

With food- I'm going to start being more mindful of it all. My doc this morning mentioned I'd likely have gestational diabetes again, so I should just start eating as if I have it now. That means breakfast looks more like lunch or dinner. FINE BY ME- bring on the lentil soup for breakfast.

  • I’m aiming to up my veggie intake and work out 3x this week.

Does anyone else do Stroller Strides or other Fit4Mom classes?
  • @wearegroot No, but apparently a stroller strides class meets half a mile from my house so I should!
  • @berky84 Good job motivating to get to the gym!  Listen to your body.  Honestly, I've already gotten conflicting advice from my practice on exercising.  I'm continuing with my routine (body weights and cardio) and adjusting as I go along depending on how I feel - lighter weights, less speed, etc.  You are the only one who truly can gauge how you feel.

@kangstadt I am already experiencing the shortness of breath and it is really bothering me.  I feel like I shouldn't feel so out of shape already!

I worked out four days last week, which was good, but I was aiming for five.  Eating was good all week, but I let loose on the weekends with too many sweets.  We have so many laying around the house!  Goal this week is five days a week of exercise and really trying to keep my snacking in check.  I have to remember I don't need any extra calories in the first trimester! Already got in today's workout at lunch, so score a win for a Monday!

  • @socks2819, I know, right?  Makes me feel so helpless already and I'm barely preggers, haha.

Yay for starting the week off right! Positive: I got my Monday workout in as well.  Negative: I stole the last piece of pizza that my son wanted.  He didn't notice .

  • I went to bootcamp this morning and plan to go 3-4 times this week. I want to continue eating healthy but I fell like I’m always hungry and carbs take away the nausea.
  • @berky84 the shortness of breath isn’t because you’re out of shape, it’s because your body needs more oxygen right now!
Progesterone reprograms the brain so that you'll inhale 30 to 40 percent deeper to supply all that extra blood with oxygen. Some women even add inches to their rib cage as a result of increased lung size.”

I'm having shortness of breath and a pounding heart even with little exertion. It makes me worried to work out which has put me in a funk! Going for walks doesn't feel like a good enough workout even though I know it's just fine!

Pre pregnancy I was used to do HIIT workouts and Instanity so I love the sweaty type workouts. I feel like I've come to a grinding halt with my workouts making me feel like crap physically and mentally.

My elliptical is still in pieces in the garage but my sweet DH is currently cleaning out the garage so I can have a nice space to work out.

So my goal is to finally get that elliptical together and get on it.

    And eat less ice cream.

    Maybe.

  • Ok ladies this baby wants cheesy saucy things... I made a skinnytaste lasagna recipe yesterday... but then I ate 4 servings
  • @dapoint23 your baby has good taste. But out of curiosity, how does skinnytaste cutlasagna calories?

@lyse01 reduced fat mozzarella and ricotta and no oil ... im a pescatarian so I use the fake meat crumbles as well... they also can substitute zucchini slices for noodles.... they have a zucchini rollatini I recipe that is awesome!
  • @dapoint23, zucchini lasagna is usually my jam, although right now I have one sitting in my fridge and no desire to eat it... the ricotta cheese turned my stomach when I tried.  Sad face.  I also like making baked zucchini chips if anyone is looking for a more appetizing way to sneak in veggies!
    Pregnancy Ticker
  • @kangstadt I end up with extra zucchini a lot - just thinly sliced, baked, with salt? Or do you do something more with the chips?
  • @lyse01, it makes it a little less healthy if you're trying to avoid carbs, but I egg wash and breadcrumb my slices of zucchini, then bake at about 400° to 425° for 15-20 minutes, flipping once if you want to.  Super crispy and delicious!  I dip them in ketchup, but my DH would say I do that to everything... you can also dip in marinara, ranch, whatever sauce you like, or nothing.
    Pregnancy Ticker
  • We make zucchini chips exactly like @kangstadt and ohhhhh are they so good!!!

My goal for the week is to take two walks with my daughter.  Sounds small, but it'll be my first go of it since knee surgery!  I was cleared for this last week, but it's so hard to hit a time where it isn't raining, it isn't too hot, and my husband's home to walk with me (I'm scared to go by myself the first few times - not sure how the knee will hold up).

I've also been working on not indulging on things that aren't worth it.  Last night, we got fast food (out of necessity/poor planning).  The fries were meh - so I stopped eating them.  That was probably the first time in my life I didn't finish a small fry!
  • I'm trying to keep up my workouts, I'm used to doing 6xs per week. Last week I could barely get through 2 sessions. Shortness of breath and exhaustion are slowing me down significantly. My last pregnancy I was completely sedentary so I have no experience with this. Does it ever get better?

Oh and the food part, ugh. All I want to do is eat all day long.

  • Holy schmoligans!! I just ran 2 miles (normally do 3) and my body felt great but breathing was insane!!! I just couldn't get a good rhythm.... not fun!
  • @leenicole121144, my DH seems to remember my pregnancy complaints from last time better than I do... He told me he remembers me complaining about shortness of breath very early on, then better by second trimester and doing most things, then I was too roly poly the last tri to do much of my nornal exercises (his words  ).  So for what it's worth, second tri should get a little easier for exercising at least!
    Pregnancy Ticker
  • Sauteed mushrooms and onions, topped with eggs and reduced fat cheese all on rye swirl and a small side of part skim ricotta... in case anyone was looking for some quick and healthy yumz!!

Also when I sautee I use pam spray and apple cider vinegar... no oil
  • I’m also having shortness of breath! Do you ladies have any suggestions on healthy easy meals to make and some healthy tasty drinks? I drink mostly flavored water!
  • @csealyn I like burrito bowls made with brown rice and a hefty helping of greens/tomatos as a healthy easy meal (and one that is easy to eat as leftovers! Just leave the ingredients separate, and microwave the rice, beans and other protein, then add all your cold ingredients). I sometimes like to make it with slow cooker salsa chicken from budget bytes (easiest recipe ever and soooo good!) (Healthier than ground beef too). Don't forget the avocado for healthy fats and deliciousness :-D.

My goal this week is to go on 2 walks, normally I do at least 3 a week with my MIL, But I was busy yesterday and toooo tired/uncomfortable today, so we'll try tomorrow then I'll try to get one in with my husband.
So far this baby has had me craving ALL the vegetables (I feel so lucky!), and most sugar has tasted gross, but I suddenly reeeaaalllyy love soda pop! I've never liked it much before, I'm going to work on not giving in to that too often :-)
  • @csealyn, I usually drink seltzer but it's been tough to drink lately with all the bloat.  Have you tried caffeine-free tea or juices?  I'm not a fan of iced tea, but it would be something different at least.

As far as easy meals, I've been making a lot of spring mix salads with fruity dressings and nuts.  I like making chicken "nuggets," for my son, just using chicken tenderloins and egg washing/bread coating pieces and throw them in the oven for 15-20 minutes at 350°.  Super easy and healthier than frozen!
    Pregnancy Ticker
  • @csealyn @kangstadt I frequently make sun tea in a gallon pitcher: 5 tea bags of your preferred herbal tea (I like mint, lemon-ginger, or peach), 2 of a black tea (Lipton’s usually, can be decaf), a quarter-cap of pink (or yellow) lemonade mix, and fresh mint. Add hot tap water and sit out in the sun for a few hours to steep.

Isn’t bitter but cuts the syrupy sweetness waaaay down - y’all, I am NOT from the South and when I have iced tea there I have to request a third sweet tea and two thirds unsweet to get kinda the right ratio. Tea bag ratio is definitely flexible to your taste. And it’s less one-note than store iced tea.
  • @molecularmolly @csealyn Not necessarily easy in that it requires a lot of individual prep, but I LOVE knockoff Earth Bowls from Sweetgreen.

Prep: Farro and quinoa (or your fave whole grain), diced chunks of cheddar, cherry tomatoes, arugula (or similar green), diced chicken, roasted broccoli and chickpeas, pesto. Get the grains warm along with chicken and maybe roasted veg, mix in the cold (cheese, tomato, greens, pesto). Enjoy.

i could eat this for a week straight so it’s sometimes worth all the slicing and dicing.
  • @lyse01 I moved to the southeast from the southwest and I’m a huge (unsweet) iced tea drinker. I didn’t specify unsweet the first time I ordered one because I’d never had to before, and I was like “wtf did you bring me a cup of honey for?!”

  • I started an at-home workout 4 weeks ago, and my goal is to stay on track with that. The workouts are a combo of strength and HIIT. So far I've been a slug on the off days, but really need to add in some cardio. Since January, I've lost ~40 lbs with low carb/exercise... I'm more motivated than ever to have a fit pregnancy this time around.

  • @lyse01, my DH loves making sun tea, I've just never been a huge fan.  I may have to try it though, regular water definitely isn't super appetizing lately.

Worked out last night and, man, is it already difficult to push myself through cardio.  The shortness of breath and exhaustion is real.
    Pregnancy Ticker
  • @kangstadt o can usually run a mile in about 9:30... yesterday I ran one in 11:30 and you would've thought I finished a marathon!
  • I’m officially obsessed with trail walks. I love seeing the deer and other creatures while on my walk. Plus, it gives me and DH some time to get out and relax together. Went on one yesterday, going on another today. Happy I’m getting a consistent workout in!

However, my eating..... Ive lost it, y’all. Ate a whole box of mac and cheese on Saturday, ate FIFTEEN hot wings and pizza/ chips and queso on Sunday... I’m eating SO much more than I used to and I can’t stop eating. I could only eat 5-6 wings before! I managed to make it through yesterday without eating anything junky. I think I need some serious help w/ cutting out the bad stuff.
  • @dapoint23, yep, I felt like a slowpoke the entire time, haha.  I know there's reasons, but it's frustrating! Especially when I barely feel pregnant this week and it's so early, no bump in the way yet or anything.  Sigh.

  • @edotf104 that workout program sounds amazing, what's it called? I'm always looking for new stuff to do, I'm currently doing a yoga challenge, HIIT workouts without weights and the knocked up fitness program until next month when I think I'll switch to Asana rebel and Studio Bloom to continue helping strengthen my core and help my Diastasis Recti heal faster afterwards.
