Weekly Questions (w/o 8/7)

noticed an uptick in newbies joining us lately, some with questions (happy to see the increase in posters, don’t get me wrong). just a friendly reminder, unless you think you may be having a medical emergency (in that case, call your obgyn or midwife), this bmb likes to keep all non emergency questions relegated to a single weekly thread. there is an exception to topics that may benefit the whole of the board AND do not already have a dedicated thread. dedicated threads are easier to find if we don’t have a ton of added extraneous threads. if you read the “*read first* board organization” thread towards the top of the board topics, it will explain everything in greater detail.

other than that, hey toss your burning questions in here and may the odds be ever in your favor.

Re: Weekly Questions (w/o 8/7)

  • Plus size mama's.... Recommendations for over bump maternity underwear? I ordered 2 pair Labor of Love from Walmart. I love them. Went to order more and they are sold out of the 1x/2x size and have been for about a month... Its not looking hopeful.
I tried motherhood maternity "over bump" underwear and it is awful. Barely makes it on the bump and then rolls down. I'm getting frustrated!

  • stms+, and anyone else in the know: did you replace your crib mattress between kids? i haven’t refreshed my knowledge about safe sleep practices, but i seem to remember that a very firm mattress for infants is the safest.

dd used her mattress probably half a dozen times (we ended up moving to a rock n play and then bed-sharing), but it’ll be over 4 years old by the time the twins get here. under these circumstances, should i replace it with a new one? is that being overly cautious?
  • @highsteaks I have not heard the need to replace. However, I did flip the mattress. Not sure if that was necessary? But it’s still in perfect condition, we used a waterproof protector, it’s still firm, I’m not buying a new one.
  • @middleschoolmommy the most comfy maternity underwear I have found is from kindredbravely.com but I believe they are out of stock right now as well  :/
  • @emjohn517 i haven’t heard of replacing it either. it was a fleeting idea i had this weekend, but the more i thought about it, the more it didn’t seem so far out there. thought i’d ask here to see if this was even a thing. either way, the mattress i have is dual sided— a firm side for infants and a softer side for toddler age, so flipping it isn’t an option for me  :/
  • @highsteaks I have no intention of replacing the mattress.

This is probably a first world problem, but anyone else who works a desk job who is starting to get swollen feet? What the heck do I use to prop them up? I have a cubicle and work in a fairly large office...I feel like this is a stupid question, ha, but I have no idea.

  • @highsteaks We got a new crib mattress only because it was a hand-me-down from my sister, so it's now 9 years old. If we had gotten it new with DD, I wouldn't have replaced it and it would be 4 years old now.
MH was not really on board with getting a new mattress, but I purchased it behind his back.  :D A 9 year old mattress seemed really old and I couldn't shake my nerves about it.

  • @runningyogimama I'm sitting at a desk roughly about 50% of the day, thankfully I haven't experienced that joyful side effect yet.  Could you put a box or small crate or something under your desk to keep your feet elevated?  Maybe flip over a small garbage can?  Steal another office-mates chair? ;)  It's not the best and probably bad for the computer itself but the computer tower is near my feet so every so often I'll prop them up on that :D

  • @runningyogimama I have a small box under my desk to prop up my feet. It's maybe 10 inches off the ground. Any small boxes you could grab possibly from office supplies?

  • @runningyogimama I have a little heater under my desk that I use to prop my feet on, although I feel like my feet are swollen at the end of the day regardless. Maybe grab a couple empty printer paper boxes and stack them?
  • @tessiesmom26 @firsttimespartanmom I was thinking a box of printer paper...I might have to ask the admin assistant on the floor to save me one. We have people that come stock basically everything from office supplies to the break room, so there aren’t any boxes or anything just sitting around that I could grab.

  • Is there anything MH should get vaccinated for before the baby comes? He'll obviously get the flu shot but I'm not sure if there's anything else he should get. He hasn't been to the doctor in a long time, just because he hasn't needed it, so I'm not sure if he's up to date on everything or not. I suppose I'll ask my OB at my next appointment, but I'm curious what others have done.

  • @offtoneverland I asked at my last appt and they said they recommend Tdap boosters every 5 years (10 max) for anyone who will be regularly hanging out with baby.

  • Speaking of Tdap... did anyone’s OB suggest a tdap booster while pregnant? My midwife said they’re now recommending it to give baby some whooping cough immunity before birth, regardless of when you had the shot last. I know 100% I got the shot right after giving birth to DD in 2014... I’m questioning if I really need it again, and so soon.

  • I am contemplating going into L&D Triage. My back hurts so much I am crying. And I really haven't felt the baby that much today and I am so worried. I called the on call doctor and he wasn't much help at all.
  • @bfpafter4years Even if it’s nothing, doesn’t hurt to get checked out! Keep us updated!

@bfpafter4years keeping you in my thoughts and praying that all is well. That's so aggravating about the on call doc being no help :( personally, I'd rather err on the side of caution and have it be nothing than not. Plus if your back is to that level of pain you should go in. Keep us posted!

  • @pink_polkadots yep, they now recommend you get one in the last ten weeks of each pregnancy so that the baby gets some of the immunity themselves. Got one last time and I’ll get one again.

@bfpafter4years thinking of you! Hope it’s nothing but better safe than sorry

  • @bfpafter4years i’m so sorry you’re in so much pain. did you decide to go in? at the very least, can you take a warm bath to help relax your muscles? hopefully baby is just having a sleepy day and the lack of movements is unrelated to the pain.
  • @pink_polkadots - As the other ladies have mentioned, it is recommended for pregnant women to get the tdap while pregnant to pass on some immunity to baby.

@bfpafter4years - I am sorry you're in so much pain. I hope everything is ok! Thinking of you

@runningyogimama - I didn't work at a desk, but as a nurse I swear by compression hose. I'm not sure what you wear, but if it works with your outfits I'd wear them and prop your feet on a box or stool at work.

  • @bfpafter4years hope you went in and everything is ok. So sorry to hear you're in pain and I'm sure terrified. Keep us updated.

@runningyogimama as many others have said I use a box. In fact my box is already starting to dip and not be very helpful. Time for another! Feet swelling is no fun! Hope you can find an extra around the office and get some relief

  • @bfpafter4years hope everything is ok!

I got my Tdap during 3rd tri last pregnancy and will again this time, 3 years later. MH and the grandparents got their Tdap boosters when I was pregnant with DD, so I don’t think they’ll be needing another one this time. But def asking everyone to get flu shots this year.
  • Has anyone else found their weight gain to slow down starting around 24 weeks? I  gained about 1.5lbs a week between 14 and 24, but in the 2 weeks since then I've only been gaining about a half a pound a week.
  • @runningyogimama compression stockings are a great idea!

Question about GD! Any recommendations as to taking the test in the morning versus pm with regards to results? Before being preg I would have rolled my eyes if I saw someone write this but I am trying to figure out what when i can take it w the year starting and realizing it may need fo be after work one day.. hoping that won’t skew my results any way
  • @eahayes I would imagine the biggest issue is just not eating carbs/sugar for a certain amount of time before the test. Your doctor might have some guidance on how long, but I would guess a couple of hours at least. You could just make it a paleo/keto breakfast and lunch for that day, lol. I've only every had my screens in the morning and been fine with having protein only breakfast (eggs, bacon) but just a normal dinner the night before.

  • Has everyone told their workplace that they are taking maternity leave? I haven't told the administration where I work (I am a doctor), mostly because I am worried about discrimination, such as not getting the raises/promotions I have been asking for. My MIL thinks I should tell them ASAP, but I am in the middle of asking them for a raise right now, and it feels awkward to be like... oh hey, actually I'm taking off 2 months for maternity leave..
  • @blumoon18 do they not know you are pregnant? I'm feel like my workplace just assumed I was taking off.
  • @bkosy The immediate people at my job do (front desk workers, technicains etc) because I am showing, but I have not told my bosses (who I don't really interact with regularly)..
  • @blumoon18 I would think they need some notice for coverage while you are out. I wouldn't wait too long to say something or that puts them in a rough spot.
  • @bfpafter4years just wanted to check in on you and see how you are. I've been thinking about you.
  • @bfpafter4years Thinking of you this morning.
