Healthy Eating and Excercise 8/6

Hi everyone! I just found out this week I'm pregnant with baby number three. I've lost about 45 lbs on weight watchers since February and have been running and doing yoga regularly.
My plan is to continue weight watchers on maintenance and maybe say I'm breastfeeding so it gives me more points.

My question to the group is if you have any healthy eating plans or workout goals(this is my first time doing it this way)?

Re: Healthy Eating and Excercise 8/6

  • Hi @dapoint23 We are in the same boat! This will be my third baby and I lost 40 pounds after having DD #2. For the first time in my life I really watched what I ate and I was working out 5 to 6 days a week. My hope is to make this the healthiest pregnancy I can. I ate my way through my last pregnancy!

My my plan is to keep up with my home workouts - combo cardio and weight training and aim for 4 workouts a week. Healthy eating wise I am keeping with what I have been doing - Whole Foods, constant supply of healthy, filling snacks and lots of meal prep. Holding off on sweet snacks has already been an issue this pregnancy, so I welcome the support! I also am trying to be active whenever I can - running around with the kids, after dinner walks, cleaning etc. doing that is helping ward off the exhaustion somewhat.

  • Hi @dapoint23!  I was waiting for a fit mama thread to pop up.  Maybe we can title this week of 8/6 for now and do a weekly Fit Friday check-in afterwards?

I try to have a healthy diet normally, although I'm already craving more carbs than usual.  I also do Crossfit 3-4 times a week, and I've been doing that for 7 years, including throughout my first pregnancy.

Yoga is super relaxing, and I'm terrible at running or making myself run .  Props to you for sticking to your goals!

My goals during this pregnancy is to keep as healthy of a diet as possible (I'm vegetarian so sometimes have a hard time eating enough quality calories), and to continue doing Crossfit throughout.

  • Wow, y’all are awesome! I’m definitely striving to eat healthy and exercise throughout my pregnancy. I admit that I hadn’t been eating my best before I took a test on Friday, but I’m making it a goal to eat foods filled with protein and healthy fats when I can.
I’ve found that I don’t have much of an appetite in the mornings, but I wake up around 6 am STARVING, so I have to eat something. I did an English muffin one day with avocado and turkey bacon, a banana protein smoothie another, and today I had an intense craving for sausage/cheese bisquick balls. I made a big batch and bagged some up and tossed them in the freezer for my breakfasts. Dinner is some type of chicken dish or a vegetarian rice bowl, sometimes something smaller like edamame.

As far as workouts go, I’m going on walks and doing prenatal yoga. Keeping it simple as my job can be physically taxing as it is.

Lets keep up the good work!
  • @socks2819 @kangstadt @sdelg09
I would love to have a weekly discussion on how we're doing and what we may be struggling with! I know I won't be telling any pregnant ladies to not eat the cheesecake, but I'm more than happy to discuss some good options or alternatives!
I'm already fearing this may be a "pizza pregnancy" lol.... but my plan is to do my best and remind myself how good it feels fuel my body with healthy food!
  • @dapoint23- sounds good to me! I think if we really focus on eating healthy, it’ll feel even better if/when we do indulge.
  • Anyone do Prenatal Yoga on YouTube? Any Channel recs?
  • @scp2585 I go to classes bc I just cant relax with my 2 kids around but from what I understand you can do most regular yoga just no breathe holding or closed twists... if it doesnt feel right dont do it
  • @dapoint23, pizza is my weakness .

@scp2585, I use the DownDog app on my phone.  It's nice because you can choose a variety of options, such as length of practice, beginner to advanced, or specific body areas to hit.  It's the only way I get any yoga in cause I don't have easy childcare or the financial ability to go to regular classes.

  • @scp2585, I’m still trying to find a channel I really like. I’ll update when I find one!
  • I’m glad to see this thread!

I walk my dog with my son (so maybe 30 pounds between him and the stroller) for about 45 minutes a day and ride a stationary bike for 20. I go to yoga classes at a studio 4-5 times per week, some classes are harder than others so I’ll probaby stop attending some of the more difficult vinyasa classes when they no longer feel great. I’d like to keep with most of my current routine and it’s worked so far but damn, sleep would help.

Diet wise I eat vegan at maintenance calories and have a huge daily protein smoothie. The biggest change is eating a decent breakfast; I’ve never been a breakfast person but I remember morning sickness being particularly bad on an empty stomach during my previous pregancies. I’ve been making overnight oats in the fridge (1:1 ratio old fashioned oats to almond milk or oat milk, tablespoon or so of brown sugar or agave syrup, berries/fruit/nuts of choice) and it’s delicious. :)

  • With my last pregnancy, we have an elliptical at home and I went on it every day from day 1 to day before delivery. It helped SO much for an easier labor. I gained 25lbs and have only lost 10 in 9 months so far... Not what I wanted but being pregnant again, id love to get back into excercise and make it a healthy pregnancy. Went to the store yesterday to stock up on fruits and veggies as I snack lots right now! We had to take our elliptical out of the house when DS started crawling due to the danger because the only space it fit was the living room. So it's sitting in peices in the garage lol

Goal: lots of healthy eating.. set up elliptical in garage and get on it! :)
  • I am do glad you started this @dapoint23! I, too, was in WW since May and had lost 15 lbs. I hope to continue my running habits, but my schedule the last two weeks and been a pain and I’ve onky gotten a couple runs in.

i didn’t know you sociuld stay on WW. I cancelled my account when I got my bfp.

Here’s to us creating happy and healthy goals in pregnancy!!!

  • I love the idea of making this a weekly thread!  And I 100% need some help staying accountable!  @scp2585
I have a friend who is at the tail end of her pregnancy and did a lot of YouTube yoga workouts.  I think it was BodyFit by Amy or something like that.  I will ask her and report back.

Also, I have Beachbody on Demand and there is a whole prenatal section on there including workouts from Autumn, creator of the 21 Day Fix, which are the workouts I did post partum last time around.  I'm excited to check those out.

  • So happy for this thread! I've lost about 30lb over the last 9months through mindful eating and strength training/cardio 5-6x per week. Looking to keep it up throughout this pregnancy, I did not exercise at all during my last and I ate everything I could get my hands on :/. Hopefully keeping up with this thread will help keep me accountable!
  • @Leondra1013 I was the same way! My daughter made me crave cheesecake  and tons of sweets!
I'm so glad I've got a healthy head start and need to stay really focused on continuing my excercise.
  • I'm in for a Fit Friday thread for sure! I try to walk at least 30 mins a day on my lunch, and hit up the gym for runs 3x a week. I was going to start adding back little body weight/low hand weight/resistance band work outs at home again. Eating - ugh. Gotta get back on a better regimen with that.

  • @MRDCle- I honestly think eating is the hardest part. I can eat healthy for a while, but then I eat some cheese fries or ice cream and it’s all over for me! It sounds like you have a great foundation for workouts though, and that’s always difficult for me.

@dapoint23- it’s always funny for me to see people craving sweets, because right now I HATE sweets! All I want is salt, salt, salt.

Happy to see this thread too. I've lost about 30 lbs over the last year but still had SOOO much left to lose. But that's on pause now. My goal is to only gain 20 this pregnancy. I gained 40 with my first. I switched my WW to maintenance mode and plan to add small healthy snacks on top of that to help with a healthier gain. But moderation isn't my strong suit. Im usually either dieting or binging. Not great at the in between.
  • @sdelg09 I'm already seeing I might have a pizza problem this time around
  • I’m about 10 lbs lighter than at the beginning of the last pregnancy - mostly lost in the past two months with more stroller walks around town and less eating...though that’s had less to do with willpower and more to do with us having so much seasonal work we’re not keeping up on grocery shopping!

Hoping to limit weight gain to 15-20 lb this pregnancy, which I think is possible if I continue the exercise. I think there are some prenatal yoga videos on YogaGlo that I want to try too.
  • Healthier eating is always the hard part for me also.  Maybe we can use the Fit Friday thread as a place to share new recipes also?

I need breakfast ideas... I usually force myself to have eggs, but they've sounded completely unappealing to me lately (oatmeal as well).  This morning I ended up having a few veggie sausages and that was it.  Bleh.  I know I need more calories to start the day off right, but nothing sounds good.  It looks like I'm not the only one on here who isn't feeling breakfast lately, haha.

@lyse01, is YogaGlo a free app?

  • @kangstadt avocado toast! I do mine with avocado, sliced cherry tomatoes, and goat cheese with S&P.

  • @kangstadt hmm, apparently free to download, plus a trial period, then a monthly subscription. Cheaper than in-person classes, but I might need an alternative on YouTube. I’m familiar with it from when I worked at a Community Center, but I think our yoga instructor just gave us her password.

Also, yesterday I had leftover stir fry for breakfast. Definitely going to try to get back into making some bran muffins for the family every week though: https://smittenkitchen.com/2014/05/blue-sky-bran-muffins/
  • Okay, fit mamas, any recommendations for a good sports bra?  I'm the "clearance section of Target," kinda girl, but since all my old bras are dying and my boobs are already sore, I'm thinking I may need to invest in one good supportive bra to get me through this pregnancy.

    I'm in between a 34B/34C currently.  Thanks!
    Pregnancy Ticker
  • @kangstadt I've heard very good things about Wacoal but haven't tried it myself
  • @kangstadt I'm about your size and I just use the champion brand at Target.  I usually have to try them on to find one that isn't too tight.

I actually went to the gym this morning and exercised for 30 minutes! I think I'm gonna try to go 3x week either in the mornings or during lunch. I felt really awful my last pregnancy and I'm hoping exercising and eating healthier will make this pregnancy better.
  • I gained 45 lb with DS and it took me until he was 14 months to lose it all (he's now 16 months) so I definitely want to try and keep my weight gain down with this baby (I would be happy with a 25 -30 lb gain). My biggest issue last time was that I was so sick for the first half that I didn't exercise at all and mostly just ate carbs. Crossing my fingers this pregnancy will be different because I would love to stay active and healthy. I have been consistently working out since DS was about 6 months old so I just need to keep the momentum up. I do a lot of hiking (I live in CO) using the baby backpack and I also do zumba and a lot of at-home workout videos on beachbody.com. Love the idea of a weekly accountability thread.

  • @kangstadt My favorite sports bra is my one from Underarmor.  Not sure of the name type, but I shop at the outlet.  It is comfortable and not super tight.  But I am also small chested, so there is not much to hold up!

I have been doing good so far this week - three morning workouts at 6am.  I'm currently doing BodyShred by Jillian Michaels.  While I love a good sweat in the morning, I felt tired by the time I got to work.  The first trimester exhaustion is real!

I also wanted to share our dinner recipe from last night in case anyone is on the hunt for some healthy options.  It is one of our go to weeknight meals because it is quick to throw together.  Plus, I'm making an effort to eat more fish this pregnancy:
    https://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/giada-de-laurentiis/salmon-baked-in-foil-recipe-1914818

I used all fresh tomatoes and herbs from my garden and it was delicious.  Also roasted some corn and broccoli that we had in the fridge as a side.

  • @gollygeeitsamy, awesome!  I always feel awful while working out, but so much better after.  Although with this bloat, it hasn't been fun to try to do pushups or run.

@kitkat8387, way to go, that's awesome!  I'm already craving carbs, so I'm in the same boat.  Hopefully we can share healthy recipes on here that get us through the first trimester nausea!

@socks2819, thanks for the tip, I'll try looking at their online outlet store!  That recipe sounds delicious!  We grew some fresh mint and basil this summer, and DH has really enjoyed having it for cooking.

  • @socks2819 that recipe looks amazing, we'll have to try it at our house. We had some roasted veggies with dinner last night along with chickpeas. Really trying to get the fiber over here to help with the digestion issues. I need to start getting into working out. I used to do a lot of pilates but that stopped after having DD. I did prenatal yoga with her when I was living in a different area so maybe I'll look into what they have around this area so I can stay in shape.

  • I also like UA sports bras, and Brooks are also great.

  • I've never done prenatal yoga. There's regular yoga at my gym. Is it that much different?
  • I did it!! DH took me on a trail walk at a nice park in our area this morning. 45 minutes, and I kept up a pretty solid pace too and got my heart rate up. I’m honestly so proud of myself, I have a hard time actually getting up and going sometimes!
  • Hi y'all. I just introduced over in the introductions thread. Before I got pregnant I signed up for my first ever 5k, which will be in early October. Soooo, I need to be running pretty regularly to make that happen! This morning I did 1.5 miles (around 11.5 pace), but I had to stop and walk several times. Apparently, even though I'm barely pregnant, I already have super fun shortness of breath.
  • @berky84 it's not too much different. Mainly it focuses on variations of poses to make it easier/doable with a pregnant belly while strengthening the muscles you'll need for giving birth. It also goes more into becoming one with the baby you are carrying. I really enjoyed it last pregnancy.

@berky84 AFAIK prenatal yoga is basically the same as a gentle flow/vinyasa class, minus inversions or anything that could make you fall over. Oh and no bikram, I think, because of the heat.
If you can't find a prenatal specific class you could talk to the instructor at your gym and they could suggest pose modifications for you throughout the session.
  • Nice work @sdelg09
@professormama I was thisclose to signing up for a 5k for the fall. I'm up to 2m straight at about an 11.5 pace but it's inside on the treadmill. I still have time to sign up but we'll see. If not, I'll just cheer you on from afar ;)

  • @kangstadt my favorite sports bras, in general, are pretty pricy. I'm an unusual size though. I have a lululemon one and another that I got at a specialty bra shop (can't remember the brand there). However, for pregnancy I highly recommend the target champion bras or other similarly affordable brands - ideally under $30, mostly because they probably won't fit you later. My rib cage expanded a LOT during my previous pregnancy, and none of the sports bras I bought during that time fit me even a few weeks after I gave birth. Just buy some you don't mind getting stretched out and that will do you fine for the short term. At least, that's what I plan to do. My lululemon one is already feeling uncomfortable just from my boobs getting bigger in these first few days.
  • Ok I'll join in! I'm not doing my temp job anymore so I have more free time to focus on being active and healthy. I've been eating salads for lunch and splurging a little for dinner. I haven't gained any weight yet but I can stand to lose a couple (or really just stay the same weight for a while).
I'll start going to the gym tomorrow for some treadmill time!
